Navy Reserve Moms

For anyone who has a Sailor in the Reserves. Lets talk...

Gunners Mate

My sons rate is GM. He just left for BC 2 days ago. I was wondering if there were any GM's in this group that could tell me about their experience.

    Hi there Mitch's mom,

My son is currently BC and will graduate in March.  He, too, is a GM and I was hoping you could shed some light on your son's experience.  Was he granted liberty between BC and A school?  Has he gone on a deployment as a reservist?  Thanks for any information you can offer!

      Navymom260,
My son just graduated BC on the 16th. He got liberty that Friday from about 3:30 to 9pm, Saturday 6am to 9pm and Sunday 6am to 9pm. After graduation he had to get his things and check into A school, that takes a few hours. He'll call you when he is ready to be picked up. We picked my son up at the visitors building.

He is currently waiting for GM school to start. They haven't told him when. In the meantime there are other classes, watch, and duty days (cleaning and such.)

He has his phone, laptop, and Ipad now. We brought it to A school. So you will be able to communicate with him a lot more after BC. He also has a comforter :)

As far as being deployed, I have no idea. He'll be in Great Lakes for several months. Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any more questions.

No, he only had liberty for the weekend and only for the day, no overnights.
Yes, I brought his things with me when we drove to graduation. We stayed at the Residence Inn in Waukegan. They were great. We arrived Thursday and went to Sarge's meet and Greet. Friday morning at 7am we took the shuttle to graduation from the hotel $4 a person. We drove back to pick him up and brought him back to the Hotel. He brought his things back to his room that night they included...laptop, ipad, phone, twin size comforter, snacks, underwear, pajama pants (blue fleece), and a set of civilian clothes jeans/shirt.
Oh, do not make reservations at the Navy Lodge. Although, it is a great place to stay, Sailors staying in GL for A school are not allowed to be there, as it's considered off base housing. Sailors flying out to A school can go there because they are technically checked out of GL.
No, he cannot come home between BC and A school.
