my son just joined the navy today--is in the PACT school??? This is all new to me.  He's excited, but I'm not sure this is a good thing.
  • CrackerjackMom

Shelia I also looked, I guess they are not approved yet. The one here is just a wonderful picture. Both bride and groom look very happy. Can't wait to see the rest. Thanks for sharing in the happiness.

    Happy New Year!

Good Morning,  Mommabee2 welcome to the group.

Shelia congratulations. What a handsome couple they make.  I didn't see the wedding pictures either, are they in the slide show?

Michael received his orders for North Island, San Diego, he has to be there by February 7(he's in Pensacola now).  He's happy to keep his truck with him and visit San Diego. He would like to try for corpsman when he gets E3 in a couple of months. Not sure if they will have an opening but he wants to try.  Overall he's doing well and we had a great Christmas together. He plans to take a week off to come home before driving to San Diego.

The pictures are there and they are great. Congratulations to the happy couple.

    Now you can relax Sheila.

  • south mississippi mom

Now I see them, Great pictures Sheila.
  • south mississippi mom

Angie... He did say he was taking a series of tests when he gets to San Diego.
  • south mississippi mom

    Angie....Thank-you for the breakdown.
  • south mississippi mom

    Hi Linda,

Thanks...I have no idea how any of this works.

  • CrackerjackMom

Minecoyote that is pretty much how it goes, the hardest part is waiting, Sometimes it takes two or three times for all the stars to aline.

Hang in there it will happen.

  • CrackerjackMom

Sorry to hear about Cory Julie, I wish him the best when he gets out.

Angie, you have so many people to keep track of and help, my hats off to all of the NC. Thank you.

  • CrackerjackMom

Pete good to hear from you. Great news that you got your benefits. Wishing you the best in next move.
  • Arwen

My older son, Chris, is doing the undesignated thing right now, which doesn't look appealing to my younger son, Sean. The new jobs for the coming year open in October, so Sean is aiming toward going to MEPS at the beginning of October to get the best variety of options possible.

OTOH, Chris joined in August, and an IT slot just happened to open up while he was at MEPS (someone with an IT slot dropped out for some reason), and he got it.

  • Arwen

There are few signing bonuses for anything right now. Bonuses are used as incentive for very high-scoring young adults to enter very demanding training programs that can last for up to two years. I think there may be one for nukes, and for fire control technician (maybe?).

There has never, to my knowledge, been signing bonuses for undesignated.

  • Arwen

valtameri, my mom liked my name too, LOL.
  • Tammy-Andrew's Mom

My son scored 89 on his ASVAB, and still went in APACT. But that was the only opening at the time, so he took it.
  • Tammy-Andrew's Mom

The ship he is assigned to, is in the shipyard, so not alot for him to do. Sweeping, paint removal, etc.  But he says he gets paid no matter what he's doing. :) A lot of the guys he went to boot camp with and A school are there too so he was happy about that.

  • nikosmom ( CVN 70, Seaman )

my son is in boot he will be an undesignated airman, can anyone explain that?
  • Valtameri

    Best wishes to Cory!

  • CrackerjackMom

Aw Julie, I suppose it is bitter sweet, but i'm sure it will all work out for Cory.

I wish him the best of luck in his new future.

I just got back from seeing Tara for the long weekend, which turned out to be 6 days. :) We had a great time. Then her and Mike were off to Las Vegas to attend the Marine Ball and fun. She is on pins and needles waiting on new orders. I hope she gets somewhere that she enjoys. Her PTS was approved so she will be able to reenlist in July/Aug. Which she is wanting to do.

Haven't been on here as much lately, so welcome to any new comers. I scanned through the post and it sounds like everyone is doing pretty good.

Angie, nice to see you, hope all is good with you.

  • Shannon Navy Mom

    Hi Julie,

From what I understand..Cory will and should receive a monthly check/compensation forever from the Navy. If the hearing loss is due to being a GM/Gunners Mate. Make sure you follow up with the appropriate sources. Best of luck.

  • nikosmom ( CVN 70, Seaman )

anybody know what level security clearance an airman has?
  • Arwen

Security clearance entirely depends on their specific job. Most jobs only require the basic "classified" clearance. They only do higher clearances if they will be handing sensitive information.
  • CrackerjackMom

Angie, is all this medical discharge stuff strictly for Navy or is it pretty much across the board Military? I was mainly wondering about Marines?
  • CrackerjackMom

Pete, Thank you for your service, I personally can't thank you enough for all your information, not only on the board here but taking time to personal message me.

I hope you continue to check in from time to time.

I wish you nothing but the best in your future. Keep doing whatever you can to stay strong. Enjoy your new freedom and make the most of it.

    Thanks again.

  • CrackerjackMom

Just catching up to all this Julie, sorry that all this is happening. But sounds like things are working out.

Great job Angie, you have always been a life saver,

  • CrackerjackMom

You are so right about "Knowledge being Power"
  • Amymichelle09(Ship 12,Div. 100)

I have heard that there is not an A school for undes...is this true?
  • CrackerjackMom

Yes, that's how it was for Tara also, and she went in as undesignated,
  • Amymichelle09(Ship 12,Div. 100)

Thank you so much. Y'all have been the most helpful out of everyone that I know! Even the people that I asked that are not on this site! Even my brother who was in the Navy lol:)
  • FirstSailor

Hi, yes, my son is undesignated and now it is his 2nd week in GL after his PIR on 2/11.  He will come home after another week, then he will report to Sasebo, Japan in late March. ~ Michelle
  • Arwen

Misyu2, my son is also at Sasebo, which ship will your son be reporting to? You should check the Japan Moms group. Most of the ships also have groups here.
  • FirstSailor

Hi arwen, he is going to USA tortuga. Michelle
  • Arwen

rdcryer, your son must be in the same group as my son, he's been in the same places (according to the Navy news sites - he never calls).

Chris is trying for the near-impossible, to get back into the school he was dropped from (IT). I heard the Navy changed that school entirely, from a 14-week school to a 2-year school! I'm not entirely sure why such a huge change, but it's still what he wants. He discussed a couple of other options (Seabee, gunner's mate), but once he got to his ship and saw what they really do, he decided those possibilities were not what he wanted after all.

The total lack of contact is hard, he simply doesn't call, he doesn't check his email or facebook, and I learned that he doesn't open mail. One of the few times he did call, he admitted that he had a stack of mail I sent him that he "didn't have time to read." If I know him, every off-duty minute is spent gaming (video or D&D) or watching anime/reading manga.

  • Arwen

Oh, to finish that last post (I didn't mean to hit enter), I stopped sending him mail. If he stops getting letters, maybe he will actually take the initiative.  I'm not counting on it, though. He's his uncle's nephew. My MIL tells me that my BIL went two years without contacting her - and that she finally had to call his command to contact him.
  • FirstSailor

Hi Arwen and Rdcryer, this is Michelle.  My son is going to USS Tortuga.  Which ship is your love one on?

  • CrackerjackMom

Tara always wanted food, snacks, magazines. She was not into toys. Same goes for my son, and for him there is even less room on a sub.
  • Arwen

My son is on the USS Denver.
  • Arwen

On Monday we're shipping a package of Girl Scout cookies. I hope the guys at least let him keep a box or two for himself, lol. We're trying to figure out what else to pack in the box, there isn't a whole lot of room, but enough we have to fill some space.
  • msmom

Hi all! Care packages are sooo important to the sailors deployed in foreign lands. Join Molly's Adopt a Sailor group for great ideas on what to send in care packages and special projects they are doing. My sailor is in Japan aboard a destroyer and enjoys getting stuff that reminds him of home. I have learned from my sailor and Molly's group that some sailors do not receive any packages or mail. I send a box about once a week and include stuff I know my sailor will share. I do send silly stuff I get wholesale from a party store: they got a real kick out of the whoopie cushions! LOL
  • Arwen

We have a group here in Brookings called the Red Shirts. They collect both money and "stuff" for Oregon military members serving in the sandbox, and ship huge packages. Over the holidays they shipped 14 Wiis and Wii games, and 10 individual DVD players and over 100 DVDs to a forward hospital in Afghanistan. I was told that they are shipping their 5,000th package this coming week.
  • FirstSailor

My son is going to Tortuga on 3/25.  But his ship is one of these ships underway to join the rescue efforts.
  • Charisma

Can someone explain to me what takes place when you are assigned to a ship without a job 
  • adm60

Hi Charisma  Try the "undesignated whats up with that group"  I got a lot of good info from there!

  • adm60

LOL--sorry!  did not realize where I was!
  • Shannon Navy Mom

I am with you Rdcryer...how could they put them in that type of horrific harms way? My son also is on 1st deployment...I wonder if they are going to give them iodine pills ....?  That has long term effects and no one on the news is mentioning the US troops that are there or on their way...how will they be protected?? Are they really trained for Nuclear Radiation exposure? I don't think so. Do They have a few thousand isolation suits with proper breathing apparatus? I also cannot believe more parents aren't more up in arms about this. If it were me...I would be jumping ship...nothing is worth that!
  • CrackerjackMom

Thanks Angie, I have faith that our sailors and all Military are trained and ready to serve or help when they are called upon.

  • Shannon Navy Mom

Angie, I had no idea that they were trained for such nuclear radiation disasters...Thank you for the very informative info. Praying to keep all of our Sailors safe.
  • micheles3

I Am with you ladies why would they endanger more lives. I don't know of my son was on his way it not but the thought us horrifying.
  • StaceyStan

I would love any advice on a being an “undesignated sailor”. My husband just left for boot Camp last week!  I would love to know what the next step is for us. We have a 3 year old daughter, and I know it’s hard to nail down a schedule for him… but anything about what is next for our family I would LOVE!   I was very excited that there is a group for us!

  • CrackerjackMom

Welcome Stacey, After boot camp your husband will most likely stay in Great Lakes for a Basic Seamanship class that lasts roughly 3 weeks, then he should get I believe a 10 day leave. He should know where he will be headed prior to going on leave.

There is a lot of information in the pages here, skim over them if you have not already done so. Then bring on your questions, we are a great bunch, someone will have an answer for you.
