I ship out January 4, undesignated seamen. When I graduate bootcamp, how will I get my personal items from home? Like a few outfits, shampoo, pajamas, my underwears, laptop, and such? Should my mom bring it in my own duffel bag? Or am I'm even allowed to have that at the undesignated school?
tabetha - thank you for making the decision to serve and best wishes for bootcamp. Have your mom join n4m for your PIR date. Don't get too impatient for personal items. It may depend on where/what you're going to be doing after bootcamp. Your mom can probably bring a few items to PIR, but it may be better to wait on some items until a little later. Since my son stayed at GL for a few weeks of training after bootcamp and then was able to come home for a few days he waited and took his stuff with him after leave.
Hi everyone - I just joined this group today on the advice of a veteran mom on N4M. My sailor passed Battle Stations yesterday and will PIR on 01/06. He is undesignated and going to A-school in GL. What kind of A-school do undesignated sailors go to - how long, where do they go from there, etc. I just got the hang of being a SR mom - I am a little lost now that he is a sailor. Any info is much appreciated.
jansu831, my SR PIR on Nov. 19 2011 and went in undesignated. he is right now still at Great Lakes for A school. he had to be delayed because of the holidays. He found out that is school will be about three weeks long. it all depends on when your SR gets his orders. there is an indoc class that is 5 days long, and then he said he'll do another 10 days in class about his job. my SR was lucky and was station in San Diego with BMU1,(Beach Master Unit 1) which is shore duty. so it just all depends on his orders on where he goes. All i know is that his dad and i had to take it one day at a time, things change from day to day. Enjoy seeing at PIR, be lucky you can spend the weekend with him. hope this helps, and happy New Year!
Wishing everyone and their Sailors a marvelous 2012.
Welcome to the group jansu831. The undesignated takes our Sailors down different paths, not necessarily bad just different. My son PIRd in June and is undesignated. He joined his ship in July in Bahrain and spent 5 months crusing around the Persian Gulf. My husband got to go on a Tiger cruise with our son's ship for the last couple of days before it returned to Norfolk in early December. My son has gotten to drive a billion dollar destroyer, grind/chip paint, paint, launch the small rigid hull boats, qualify on several guns, and now his most unfavorite job "cranking", working in the galley for 4 months. To go along with those jobs he spent Thanksgiving in Italy visiting the Vatican, got to see the tallest building in world in Dubai, building is in the new Mission Impossible movie, provide security for maitime traffic from pirates, make new friends, and much more. This route is going to be what the Sailor makes of it.
I'm going to be interested in the next year how my son reacts since the ship will be in port.
Good luck to your Sailor. I'm sure he'll make the best of whatever opportunites he is given.
Thank you so much to everyone for the advice and well wishes. Boot camp has certainly taught me that things change and nothing is certain. I get some interesting reactions to the word "undesignated" wherever I go. It's nice to be in touch with people who understand! Looking forward to hanging out here with you all!
Thank you Julie for that incouragement. I didn't know undesignated had such a stigma attached to it. I wonder if I had been better off not knowing! I know for sure we would be better off if the recruiter had just been truthful to him in the beginning. Hopefully it will turn out okay for my son. He's a lemonade out of lemons guy anyway. And, it's a job during a time that jobs are scarce!
So - I have a question. When they are undesignated and get an assignment (in my son's case in Japan) do they qualify for a rate and stay there, or when they get a rate do they go back to A school for training and get assigned somewhere else? I'm sure it probably varies - just curious!
CArol - my son's experience: he was undesignated, assigned to a ship, looked around, decided to strike for OS. He never went to A-school. He studied and took the tests while aboard ship.
Thanks navymomx3 - that is the kind of story I like to hear! Our graduation is tomorrow morning so I will see him for the 1st time. I am anxious to sit face to face and take his temperature on the whole situation. Whatever he does will beat waiting tables at the local restaurant. He seems excited about the whole adventure. Thanks to all - keep the comments coming!
Hello, Any other BUD/s DOR's on here? Just wondering how your sailors did after leaving BUD/s? Mine is currently undesignated and it's unclear as to when a chance for a good job list will be available. He's a ship currently. Feel free to send me a personal message if you'd prefer. Thanks! G/night
Hi mamamia, My son finally classed up in Pensacola and should be deployed to Japan to the USS George Washington by the end of January. He was told that he had to wait 6 months before he could strike for a new rate. What ship is Son on?
Hi Lisa, He's on the USS Russell. Sad part is he's a licensed acupuncturist and he's painting a ship. I'd love to see him help heal, but there were no corpsmen jobs when he DOR"d. Glad your son has classed up!
My son arrived in Pensacola on Friday from BUDS in SD. He's undes. airman and will be based in Everett, WA on the USS Nimitz. As of right now, he is not a happy camper but I'm hoping that once he gets to WA things will be better. Right now he is an E-3 and should be eligible to move to an E-4. Does he have to test for that? He hasn't been given too much info . Hi, Mama and Lisa!
Hi Kayrock, good to see you again, most of the guys from BUDs aren't too happy at first but in time they make new friends or meet up with old ones. And they realize there is life after BUDs.
Carol what ship?
Angie, when is Navy computer available, what time of month.
At least it sounds like lots of them in the same boat (pun intended!) in P'cola. Mine has a roommate from his BUDs boat crew - maybe one of yours?
Lisa, he's assigned to a strike fighter squadron, not a ship. But the squadron deploys in the George Washington when it goes. No idea what all that means, really :)
CArol, my son will be on the G-Dub too but not assigned to a squadron, just undes airman. We will be heading up to P'cola next Friday to pick up his car and give him a little send off. Not sure when he leaves for Japan yet but he graduates from his class the 20th so probably pretty soon after that... now that will be a hard good-bye or as I like to say, "So long for now" :)
My my, lots of entries in the last couple days, love it. Welcome old friends and new. I love reading the posts because even if I don't currently have a particular question it helps me feel more informed. Thanks everyone.
The Hawaii pictures are fabulous. Its great your son's Navy experiences has been positive even if they weren't what he originally planned.
So how long can a sailor stay undesignated. My son opted out of his AIRR contract, and now hasn't been assigned yet and they are telling him it is likely he will end up at sea or over seas?
Okay - I;m looking for more insight here. My undes sailor just graduated boot camp on January 6th and is in his undes A-school in GL. Yesterday they told him he finishes A-school on January 27th. Then, he has 15 days of leave and then goes back to GL before going to Japan. Do we go ahead and get a flight for him to come home? (Obviously the longer we wait the more expensive the flight - which is already ridiculously high...) Do we make a return flight to GL? Does his 15 days of leave start on the 28th making day 15 on February 11th? Can this change? I don't know where to begin! I have been told by several that when he gets home, he can change his ticket to Japan (that he should have in his hand) to route out of our home airport instead of GL if we want to pay the difference. If that's the case, do I just make a one way flight home? I am clueless! Any advise is much appreciated!
Thanks Angie. He will pay his way, we just needed some direction. His recruiter lied to him when he enlisted - which is why he is undes today... In boot camp (on more than one occasion) he asked his RDC about things the recruiter said and how to make those things happen - and they laughed at him. Consequently, he is a little gun shy about asking for info. I will pass this on to him and hopefully we will get him home!
Regarding my questions below - his appointment with SATO is on the 25th. He can fly out to come home on the 27th. Do we really wait until 2 days before he leaves to worry about a ticket home? Right now it is about $300 to fly home if we book it. A flight in 2 days is about $1000. Has anyone else had this same situation?
My son went to A school in GL in November, he came home for leave for Thanksgiving and then flew to Norfolk. All his airline reservations were taken care of at GL at A School once they had the exact dates. It was like a week before he was supposed to come home that they booked his flights. They helped him book everything and are able to get a better deal I believe. I was worried about the flights as well because it was so close to Thanksgiving but they take care of everything there...my son wasn't flying to Japan but I imagine they will make sure everything is taken care of properly.
Wow, so much to catching up to do. I don't know what happen, I wasn't getting my notices. Plus it was a very busy year for me, I just never seemed to get the time to get on here. 3 trips to the east coast to deal with aging mom. And a few trips to San Diego to help Tara pick up and move on for a little while. I think I spent almost 3/4 of the year away from home.
Good to see you Sheila and Julie, looks like things are going well for all.
How are things with you Angie?
My Sailors are doing just fine. Aaron is a first class now, still in Hawaii. Got off the sub from a 6 month deployment on 12/21 and flew home a few hours later for the holidays. Both were home for Christmas, it was wonderful, they had not been home together in 5 years. They hadn't seen each other in almost 2 years.
Tara's in Mississippi right now, she will, or I guess is now a "Plank Owner". After 4 years at Pendleton she is now assigned to a ship. The brand spanking new USS San Diego. And the best part is she will be retuning to SD. She reenlisted for another 4 last August. Broke up with the boyfriend. (little cheer from Mom) Right now she is loving life.
One thing we all learn from our kids being in the Navy is "patients". whether undesignated or designated, it all just takes time.
Well my son is going to work with "strike fighters squadron 31" in Oceana, Va..not even sure what he will be doing or how long he will stay there? Any ideas?
He seems excited...I am happy he is going somewhere he ws/is very unhappy with where he is at now, just hope he is happy when he get to VA.
I love the expression Mother Navy, that's right on! My son is on his way to Japan/USS GW today and he was running late for his flight and I had to laugh because he drives me crazy and as I told him "I'm not in charge of you anymore"haha...
My son is in Pensacola right now too. He was going to A school to be an air rescue swimmer (special ops) and was told the wait time to start would be months and the training is at least a year and half and he didn't want to wait 2+years to get started...so he dropped his contract (not hard to do cause special ops is volluntary) and became undesignated but now is going to Oceana VA to work with strike fighter squadron 3 1 ?? what do they do? what is it??? Is your sailor starting A school in Japan? I have so many questions and not many answers? LOL
Momof5 - mine is also undesignated (after dropping from BUDs) and is going to Japan to work with a strike fighter squadron. I don't know much more than you :)
Angie - My son lost his spec op contract in basic because his eyes had changed and didn't qualify anymore. He was originally told Navy wouldn't allow him to have surgery to fix his eyes until he was 21. He is now being told that if he pays for the surgery himself it is okay. Do you have any information on this?
Does anyone know what a PTS is. My sailor was told that if she did not pass her PRT she may get a PTS and Im not knowing what that means. Only it does not sound positive . she has been in 2 years, served one deployment and is undesignated. Any one have information on this..? I'd really like to know how to support her...
Well my undesignated is now taking an honrable adminstrative discharge! He went undesg when he found out he would be waiting months to start Aschool, then got left at Phase 1 liberty for over 2 months until somenone high up on the other side of the base found out and all heck broke loose and he was immediatly moved up in phase... but staying at that phase 1 left him depression, axiety, etc.. and instead of helping him through it they said you should just take the out (since he could drop his contract due to it being special ops) and overcrowding they seem to be offering early outs to anyone and everyone..but I know with some encouragement he would of held on...I have so many mixed emotions... I am somewhat disapointed but I udnerstand where he is coming from...anyways I needed to vent and need support. He will be home at the end of April (went in mid Oct.) his brother will be home next week, he is a reservist and took the news hard but he has had a great experience with the Navy....thanks for listening
Momof5- sorry to hear about your son. My son has struggled in the navy as well, with what seems like a lot of bad breaks going his way. I wish I could shield him from some of the redtape, inefficiencies and bad taste this leaves. But I guess it does build character. Good luck for you and your son moving forward.
Hello all! I'm concerned after reading a bit on here that my son should not have left in an UNDES rank? He is very excited about serving his country as his Uncles have done I don't want him to become discouraged. The PT quals aren't an issue don't know about the other tests...please help put a new Navy Mom's mind at ease thanks!
TJ's mom- There is nothing wrong with being undesignated. My son is having a blast being undesignated assigned to a ship in San Diego. I originally got on this group, and was dissappointed because he lost his original contract as a Rescue swimmer, so it wa the unknown. Although currently David doesn't have a "job" per se, and is doing a lot of manual labor, he is also able to evaluate all the different jobs out there, and will make an informed choice of what he wants to do once he is eligible. (He has to wait a year before applying for a different job.) But, he is happy, which is all us Mom's really want! So don't worry!
