Lake George Sue: Yes, my son has been a 'full' LT for a while now and awaiting news of promotion. He's once again based in Norfolk and on a carrier (he's a nuke) but he's underway right not.
Hey friends - are there any recent grads out there who are doing subs? My husband graduates in 6 weeks and we're trying to get an idea of how soon they'd move us down to Charleston. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
2 in the service - with any luck, my SIL will get us rooms at the Navy Lodge, so we won't have to drive far. 6:45 AM is 4:45 to me - I'm in Mountain Time. I believe in military time, that's O-God o'clock. :)
We head to New Port soon for 14-10's OCS graduation. I am sure there must be some kind of traditional gift that we would want to present to our LO, but we are so green at this, not sure what would be appropriate. I've read a bit about a commemorative coin. Would welcome any info on that. Thank you!!
Thank you much for resposes. Will take all that into consideration and see what we come up with for something to mark this accomplishment. Getting a bit excited / nervous about the trip to RI! Thanks JB/Snowmc/Prof M!
Jimaria...what a wonderful trip you had! Saw your pictures and stole a few for myself. You got some great shots of the yard and Newport that I was unable to capture. Thank you! And you will always be part of 12-10!
Triece and 2 - your posts about the weekend definitely has tears (of excitement and pride) rolling down my face!! :) I am sooo happy for you guys, how amazing!! 28.5 days and counting for 15-10!!! WOO HOO!
I just wanted to say hello to everyone! I stumbled across this site yesterday and really wish I knew about it earlier. My LO is in class 15-10 so not much time left now. I have a question about Hi Moms...is the dress more formal than casual?
Yes, hi moms is more formal. Most women wear dresses/skirts or nice slacks. Not black tie, but church dress is appropriate. Let us know if you have any other questions. Your time is drawing near...enjoy the ride!
Am I missing something.....is there not a specific 'symbol" for supply? I can't find anything for the challenge coins or for a military ring. Maybe it is referred to as something else? Thank you!
I want to know about that too, as my LO will be supply but he does not start until August. I also wondered how much the sword was, and do they really need it??
The sword was $625 without engraving. They can wear it for weddings until they are LTJG...then it can be worn with the dress uniform. We purchased ours through Marlow White. Don't know about the symbol for supply...sorry.
I know this is a crazy question and I'm sure I know the answer....but is there any type of childcare out there for graduation? I am just so worried that my little one will cause a scene and let everyone know he is there...ha! And I don't want to have to miss any part of graduaton. Trying to come up with a plan for someone to go that can babysit....but just checking in case that doesn't work. Thanks!
To all the spouses on N4M: Happy Military Spouse Appreciate Day :)
Military Spouse Appreciate Day is celebrated on the Friday before Mother's Day in the United States. Citizens take this day to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and sacrifices of spouses of their Armed Forces. Military Spouse Day has been observed since 5/23/1984 when a proclamation by Ronald Reagan recognized the profound importance of spouse commitment to the readiness and well-being of military members.
Leslie: Thank you so much! I was worried that people would frown if I had a baby that may make a little noise here and there :) I'm sure he won't be the only one. Now if he starts to really fuss I'll have to step out, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that won't happen. So looking forward to it!! Thanks again!
Welcome Emily. My son enlisted and been in almost ten years. It really depends what package he goes for. My son in supply so he prepared package. His second try he got selected. He went to college while he was in the Navy and after a lot of hard work, the board selected for OCS Amen!!!
My son graduated BSU on December 18th and started OCS on January 3rd. THOSE WERE THE LONGEST 3 MONTHS OF MY LIFE!!!! But they will end and life will take a new turn and OCS will seem like it was a life time ago. Hang in there and rely on the members of your class and those of us from prior classes to make it through. You will and so will your son.
Hi jordosmom! My son just started OCS on May 9th and it hasn't quite been a week yet and I think about him every day and have already written 4 letters to him! You may want to start a group as I did, specifically for moms/mates of 19-10 which should be his class, since my son's is 18-10! Good luck and pay attention to what the women say on this site. The information is invaluable and has helped me so much along the way.
quick question... it's anticipated that my LO will graduate OCS the first or second weekend in August. That's peak tourist season in Newport. Do any of you recommend making the hotel reservations now instead of waiting? I'm a bit concerned we won't get a hotel! Or... is there lodging on base for families of graduates?
I have been reading my son's class website and they said the hotels are expensive during tourist season, so I think I would book now as you can always change the date if need be, but hopefully no roll over. There is a navy lodging but to get checked in you have to have someone with military ID. Also a Navy Gateway and their no is 401-841-7900. I don't know number for Navy Lodge. Hope that helps!!
Wow thank you Cheryl S as my daughter in law will be flying in and we thought I had to wait until she got there with her military ID. So can she put a room in our name then and not hers. We are booking three rooms for all the family. My son is a E-6 and can't wait to say ensign, lol Cheryl is the best day to arrive in RI is it Thursday?
Glenmom...Thursday if Pass In Review (PIR) which is held in the late morning, so you might want to arrive on Wednesday. That's what we did. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Middletown. They also have a very flexible change/cancel policy and serve a decent breakfast. It is close to base. Only about a 5 minute drive to get on and then you can leave by the back gate, which is extremely close. I just checked their rates for the first part of August...$204/night and they have availability. Where ever you decide to stay, I would make your reservation now. Enjoy your time there....it is very special and worth every penny you will spend!
tks snowmc I sure have to talk to my daughter in law. I see Wednesday is day to arrive. She was talking about Navy lodge, but am not sure how soon make reservations So far away but want things settled for sure. Thanks so much for the advice. Money is no object will save not everyday you have a son graduate from OCS. Worth every penny, okay you can tell am proud mom to be lol
August seems like it is a long ways off...but it will be here before you know it! Seriously...make your reservations NOW! Especially since it will be tourist season. Navy Lodge will fill up quickly. Watching your son graduate OCS is amazing...a dream realized!
here am getting all excited talking about it and opps he start August won't graduate until Oct I believe if he does not get rolled. I guess opps-- was getting ahead of myself.
Thank you so much, everyone! Now here's another question... I see that the PIR can be on Thursday and then there are events on Friday and the weekend? I'm so unfamiliar with this stuff. It seems then, that we need to make reservations for Wed through Sunday? Is this typical for all graduations from OCS?
