My son was in 06-13 but has rolled. He said about 18 have rolled so far and several DORs. He didn't pass the run, said it was cold with a 20mph wind. Not sure if that 18 was the entire class or just his group. They were decided into 2 since it was a large class. He sounded fine and I have received his flight info for Christmas leave so all is good.

  • Anna

    aggiemom,

Are the candidates going to be able to go home for Christmas??  Do they have to have earned the leave time or are they allowed to go in the hole?

I think all the classes are split into two classes - at least all the ones I followed both before my daughter's and after.  The classes will actually compete against each other for the streamers.

    Cookie,

OTCN doesn't post pictures until one of their events.  So you will see pics for Wake up Wednesday, Outpost, the swim quals, firefighting, all their inspections and all three of the PFA's.  It brought tears to my eyes when I would catch a picture of my daughter.

  • Anna

    Dawn,

My daughter doesn't need IFS either and was hoping they could at least use the pool to work on her swimming but with the pool closed she can't do that!!!

  • aggiemom

He is getting to come home for one of the two weeks. I believe he is using leave. Before he left he said he would take both weeks even though it meant he would be in the hole. Either they aren't allowing them to take both weeks or go in the hole. I didn't think he would get both weeks due to the wording of leave guidelines on the OCS page.

Any idea how many usually roll?

  • Dawn

Anna that is what my son was hoping also but they are just holding until pool is done.
  • Anna

It's hard to say how many roll.  Jenn lost 6 in her class - she was in 17-12C.  There are several events that can cause them to roll.  All the way up to the end of week 8.  Try not to focus too much on that tho' - - for some it can be looked on as a good thing because it gives them more time to work on their weakness and become stronger.

  • aggiemom

cookie - here is the FB page for class 06-13 in case you didn't find it https://www.facebook.com/groups/546897392002520/

  • Dawn

Aggiemom try not to worry. Your son will return to next class and will move past this. He will return stronger!
  • cookie

thanks aggiemom for the info, will check out the fb page.

  • aggiemom

I'm not worried now. When I missed a call from area code 401 I was worried. When I did talk to him he was fine, he even joked that he would have a little more money in his bank account. He'll make it, it's just a 3 week delay.

  • M's mom

aggiemom,  Some of the candidates who roll, wind up being some of the best candidates, and are sometimes appointed the leaders of the class they join, because they have three weeks of experience vs. the Indocs coming in!  I'm sure he will do great with the next class!

my son is in class 06/13 and i just received my first email from him, my question is when i tried to reply back  i keep getting mailer-daemon, does anyone know if they are not able to receive emails back.

  • Mayapple

Hi Cookie,  Someone else may know more, but when my son was in OCS in 2011 he could only receive e-mails on the weekends.  I believe it was both Saturday and Sunday.

  • Navygf820

Hi Cookie - candidates are only allowed to start using email regularly after they pass their RLP inspection on the Thursday of Week 4. The email you received was a "test" email to make sure their accounts work. He is not able to receive email until Week 4 so that is probably why you are getting a bounce back message. Also, make sure the email address you are emailing is correct...sometimes they have a few zeros or numbers after their name. It should be @training.navy.mil as the ending. My boyfriend is in class 04-13 and once RLP was over they had computers in their rooms and were allowed to use email everyday during their down time.

  • cookie

thankyou navygf820 and mayapple, that makes sense, i was able to get a letter off to him today to explain why i couldn't reply back to him.,  will also recheck the email address, thanks for your help.

  • aggiemom

    Hi Mary

My daughter is in 08-13 G and is from South Carolina.   Have you received any letters yet?  I found a facebook page "Office Training Command Newport" and saw pictures of this class and of my daughter.

  • gordons4

Mary and Tracy, Have you both joined the 08-13 Friends and Family page on FB? Here is a link:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/562407203776081/?bookmark_t=group

Excellent source of information and good way to stay connected to others with Loved Ones in the same class.

  • TracyAlex

    Thanks for the info!

  • C Adam's Mom

Hi!   My son is getting ready to report for OCS March 10, 2013 - Class 11-13.  Is there anyone else out there with a loved one in that class?

  • TracyAlex

C Adam's Mom - Someone on this website directed me to join the friends and family facebook page for my loved ones class so I will do the same for you.  Here is the link:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/140665609429503/

This will give you a lot of info and put you in contact with others that have loved ones in class 11-13.  My daughter is in class 08-13 and the friends and family facebook page has been a big help to me.  Best of LUCK!

  • Dawn

Also join some older groups titled the same but with different class number so you can see what goes on.
  • C Adam's Mom

Thanks so much to both of you!!  I did join that group on Facebook!   Lots of great information on there!    I do love the Hi Mom Videos on You Tube as well!!  I am so grateful for all these resources I am learning about!  This is going to be a tough time for me and this will make it better!!

  • Anna

    C Adam's Mom and TracyAlex,

Congratulations to both of you for your sailors going through OCS.  My daughter graduated last September.  The facebook pages are a great source of information and support.  And as Dawn said, join the groups ahead of your sailor's group so you can get a look at what's coming up.  You can also pay it forward by joining the groups behind you and helping them with questions.

I do just want to warn you to keep discussions general and don't share too much in details.  Officer Training Newport is relatively new with sharing on facebook and the friends and family groups are pretty new at this also.  As our Candidates started earning some freedoms, some loved ones got too free with sharing information.  Just be careful, you don't know who all might be reading these pages.  I don't want to scare you away - - please use the groups to ask questions and get the support you need while your loved one is there.

Good luck to both of them!!!!

  • Dawn

Also join the OCS face book page. They post pictures and updates of classes

Hi Adam's Mom. My son just graduated from OCS at the end of January--class 0513. We are not a military family at all, so this was/is all a culture shock--but we could not be more proud of him. My advice? Hang on...follow FB--OCS is very good about posting pics--...trust that he (and you) will make it through...and mostly, rely on God and prayer. We're all here to cheer him and you through this. :)

  • C Adam's Mom

Thank you, Anna; I will definitely keep your advice in mind when posting!

Dawn and Gordons4, I appreciate your information and advice as well!   Having the ability to view pictures as he goes through the OCS is just absolutely wonderful!! I had no idea that this type of thing existed!  I was scared that I would say Bye to my son on Friday and be in total darkness of how he was doing until May 31st!!   His father was a Navy officer and there wasn't anything like this back in the 80s!!   So this is a wonderful source!!  It is so comforting being in touch with other loved ones who are or have experienced what I will be going through!!  Thank so much to you all for taking the time out with all your advice!!

  • Anna

    C Adam's Mom,

LOL - my husband went through OCS in the 70's and it was a picnic compared to what they do now!!!  As our daughter would tell him what they had to do he was just shocked!!!!

  • C Adam's Mom

I imagine it has changed quite a bit!  I am so proud of him as I know all you moms are!!

  • aggiemom

Let me know if you have any questions, my son graduates on Friday. The Sunday or Monday answer an unknown number on your phone. Area code for Newport is 401 but the Candios my let them use their cell to make the final I'm here call. Send prepaid phone card with all phone numbers & your email address on it in case he doesn't have that memorized. The Facebook page for your class will become your new addiction.

  • Jkkentch

Anyone have a loved one starting OCS Class 13-13? My son is headed to Newport April 20th to report at 0900 on the 21st.

  • brentes93

@Jkkentch:  If you have FB, a group is created for families for oncoming OCS class.  It will provide you with information on events, pictures, etc.  There's also the OCTNewport webpage that shows pictures of your LO (loved ones) milestone events.

  • TropikalParadize

Jkkentch, my husband is in class 10-13, the class that will be Candios for the 13-13 class!  Let me know if you have any questions about anything, and yes, the FB pages for the respective classes are great, the girls that run those pages are so very helpful!

  • OkSuzy

Good luck and Congrats to all! Our son went thru OCS about a year ago....interesting time :). It does get better!....Follow FB or here for support...we all lean on one another......
  • navymomkristin

Jkkentch, my son is in 13-13. He reports at 0800 on the 21st. I see you are on the FB page too.

TropikalParadize, who is your husband? I also joined the 10-13 page so I could get an idea of what would be happening and learn from another group.

  • TropikalParadize

Hey navymomkristin, I think I have seen you on the FB pages for 10-13 and 13-13....my name is Trista :-)

  • KathyA

    Hi Ladies!

I'm a mom with a son in 11-13:  suggestions or ideas for the Candio boxes? Also, I'm seeing posts for PIR for sailors regarding a form letter, but none for OCS, we have not received any letters? Any information you have would be appreciated!

Good thoughts and prayers to all of your sons and you as well!

  • Anna

    KathyA,

Candio boxes can contain any snack/food items that your loved one would really like.  Also magazines but I wouldn't worry about books because they don't have a lot of free time as a Candio.  I also sent my daughter some microwave instant meals like spaghettios because as a Candio they may not always get to have lunch or dinner.  She really appreciated having something she could microwave up for dinner.  I also sent instant coffee and teas and a few "toys" like little airplanes - since she was going off to flight training after graduation.  Just make sure you mark each box with the words Candio on all sides because the mail office will hold the boxes until they are allowed to have them.  And be sure to decorate the inside of the boxes!!!  Ours even had a music box playing Anchors Away when she opened her box!!!

There isn't any kind of form letter regarding graduation like at boot camp.  By the time your loved one gets email privileges they will send you all the information about graduation and the events leading up to it.

    Hope this helps!!!

  • OkSuzy

All our son wanted was candy and a few salty snacks...I threw in a magazine also...They don't have time to read as someone else posted...have fun decorating the inside of your box:)
Best of luck to your LO!
  • TropikalParadize

My husband just got his candio boxes this past week....I decorated them with tons of pictures of the two of us, doing fun stuff, and had one panel Happy Birthday, one panel Happy Anniv, one panel Happy Easter, since all these happened while he was there!  They can get more than one candio box, my husband got 3, and I have heard that the record is 8.  Also, since they just moved into the new building, I have heard they will not have access to microwave, fridge, and keurig coffee maker like they did in the other building, just to let you know.  I filled my husband's boxes with trail mix, dried fruit, protein bars, nutella, crackers, spam singles, tuna singles, granola, cookies, nuts, pastry pies, pop tarts, pretzels, the works!

  • KathyA

Thank you ladies for your excellent suggestions!  I appreciate your advice and wish the best to you and your LO's!

  • navymomkristin

    Trista, yes that's me!
  • Anna

    TropikaParadize,

I heard that they moved into the new building!!  I am shocked to read tho' that with the nice new building there is no microwave or fridge in the candio lounge!!!!  Do they still get a lounge or something less??  My daughter had to transport the newbies to medical and such and then wait there while they had tests or whatever.  Many times she'd miss lunch and dinner.  If it wasn't for the microwave and the meals I sent her she'd go without anything to eat in the evening!!!  And no coffee maker???  Poor candios!!!!

  • bsmom

Hi Everyone!  My son reported to OCS Rhode Island on 4-21-13.  He is in class 13-13.

  • KathyA

    Hi bsmom!

Congratulations to him and you!  The FB page is my best friend! I truly don't know what military families did without the updates/photos! Best of luck to your son!

  • bsmom

OCS is, of course, new to me.  My son went through boot camp for Enlisted personel at Great Lakes and has been accepted to OCS. When he went to boot camp we were given an agenda.  It told approximatly when phone calls would be, graduation date, when items could be sent...ect...  Can anyone fill me in on when/what/where?  Also, what is the candio box that i see previous posts about?

  • KathyA

Hi!  You'll get a phone call at about week 3, usually on a Saturday evening (0900 local) from a 401 area code.  It's the most unexpected and wonderful call you'll ever get : )  They'll get set up with email approx week 4-5.  If you're on facebook, search for OTC Newport and there are updates and photos updated weekly by their class officers. (if you're not on FB yet, set up an account if only for this purpose).  Only letters can be sent now, the address is on the OCS Navy site under FAQ. (start writing soon, they love it!) No packages until the Candio phase (week 10'ish: you'll get a letter with info)  Graduation date will be posted under Events on the facebook page. Let me know if you need more info!  There's so much happening, it'll make your head spin!!

  • KathyA

Sorry, bsmom,  1st phone call will be at 2100 local  : )
