Mamawalrus:  My son arrived at CL last Tuesday.  This whole process does not make sense to me at all.  But hey, what else is new? I drive my son crazy with all my questions.  He seems to take it all in stride.  My questions is, what changed after he joined the Navy that he doesn't question things any more?  Wish I would have had that power over him when he was growing up! :)

Talked to my son last night.  He is so excited. This week he will be doing physicals and whatever happens to drop by.  He is so up right now!!!! So good to hear.
  • mamawalrus

Maybe our sons will get to know each other since they will be in FMTB together and they are not that far from each other now.  Will CL be their duty stations?

  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

I am not sure, I thought so.  I was also wondering if they get to come home after FMTB.  So many things to think about.... I think I drive him crazy with all of my questions.  Oh well he can get over it:)
  • Navy Mom

As of right now my son has orders after FMTB for Milton, Florida.  But who knows?!  Yesterday he found out he wasn't even on the schedule to start classes in October!   I agree with you Kym, get over it!
  • mamawalrus

My son will stay in Cherry Point after FMTB, or at least that is what the plan is as of now. Of course things can change but I hope not. He really seems to like it there so far, He is suppose to rotate to the clinic today and work.

Also please keep the family and friends in prayer of a fallen Corpsman..

    US Navy Hospitalman Riley Gallinger-Long

19-year-old US Navy Hospitalman Riley Gallinger-Long was killed on 11th August 2011 in Helmand province during a foot patrol with a US Marine unit in Marjah district.
The sailor, from Cornelius, Oregon, graduated from Forest Grove High School last year. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

My daughter is assigned to CL and I just wanted to see what the living situation  is like.  She will be assigned to the hospital.  My brother was stationed at CL many years ago as a Marine, so I am alittle familiar with the area, BUT I am sure things have changed.

    Thanks

    Prayers to HM3 Lundy's family..

    - The military says a sailor based at Camp Lejeune was killed while conducting a patrol in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said Sunday that 25-year-old Petty Officer Brian Lundy of Austin, Texas, died Friday while conducting a dismounted patrol in Marjah, Helmand province. Lundy was assigned as a Hospital Corpsman to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.

Ruthella I friend requested A's mom just a few minutes ago....   : )
  • pianomom1 (ship 11/div 203)

hi ladies--just joined this group so i can ask some questions.  our sailor recently called.  he graduates on oct. 17 from A school.  because he was not top of class, he didn't get his favorite picks of places to go next.  told us originally he would be stationed back in great lakes.

but when he called, he now says he is going for field training to either NC or SC. which base will that be?  (medical field training)  we assume this means that he will be attached to a marine unit?  how long will that last, and then will he be going to great lakes for real?

i REALIZE these questions are pretty specific to him, but just wondering if anyone can HELP THE POOR PARENTS!!!!????

    thanks, guys

  • vettespace

Hi pianomom1, my Corpsman just returned from a deployment with a Marine Unit out of CL and is heading back to his permanent duty station at a clinic in Great Lakes.  So, if your Sailor ends up in GL let me know as my Corpsman is stationed there.  GL is cold and snowy in the winter, but Chicago is full of stuff to do.

Hi Ruthella, Alabama just beat Arkansas...RTR  :-)

  • vettespace

    Roll Tide Roll.... :-)
  • mikes mom

Pianomom - My son is at CL too : ) He's deployed right now, but that is his home base.. We are always here for our parents : 0

Sir Vette I don't think I have said it enough I am so glad your son is back home on American soil and eating Junk Food !!!!

  • Scrappy1(Carol)

Well, the 4th test is over for this group in FMTB!  This week they are in the field and the final will be the following week.  Please remember this awesome group as they prepare to finish.
  • mamawalrus

Scrappy.... cant believe how fast it is going,, for us at least.. Mine will start next month as your's in ending...

Any advice you can pass on?  How hard did he say it was or the most difficult part?

Pianomom.....He will be heading to CL in NC... is this going to be his home base as well?  My son was sent to Cherry Point, NC and is awaiting to start FMTB next month.

  • Scrappy1(Carol)

I was surprised that son called tonight.  He said they were doing field week this week so I think he is looking forward to that.  I asked if he felt more in shape after all this, he told me he was so tired he couldn't tell.  I really think he is enjoying this.  He is in a great group and they are motivating for each other.

mamawalrus your son will do great!

  • mamawalrus

Can you all tell me about FMTB as far as can they get care packages, letters?  Is it set up like Boot camp as far as the rules?  Do they do phases?
  • vettespace

Hi mamawalrus, yes they can receive care packages. No, it's not as strict as boot camp. Yes, they do have liberty phases earned after passing some of the first few written tests, etc. Follow the FMTB links above and you'll be able to download the manual that describes the phases. Others will add info. as well.
  • mamawalrus

    Thanks!!!!

    Hi Lori,

My son returned to CL early on a Mon. evening and was given a 96 right away so he had the next 4 days off plus Sat. & Sun.  He had to call in on Fri. to check in but didn't have to physically return to base until Sun. 6p (though since he was an IA he did have to go back to base for 30min. on Wed. to pick up his review from his Chief).  We only had 4 days notice from the FRO of his return.  Fortunately, my son had given us his expected return time a couple weeks prior so I knew what to plan for hotels, etc.  Of course, that's all subject to change.  I booked a condo (3br for under $600) at Emerald Isle about 30min. from base at the last minute from Sun. to Sun. so that worked out perfect.  I know that you're getting excited, anxious may be a better word, for your son's homecoming.  It'll be here before you know it!

  • Scrappy1(Carol)

I just had to share that graduation for #11050 was fantastic!  My son is now finished and still waiting for the exact orders but he is to be at CL for 2 years but we know that can change.  My son is more handsome each time he finishes his boot camps!  He and his girlfriend went to the Navy Ball which happened to be last Saturday and they really enjoyed that.  As far as graduation, follow Marcy's suggestions and you will be fine.  We got there at 0730 which was early but if we had not gotten there early we may of had to stand in the back.  Seating is limited.  We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on 17N because that is our usual pick, they are very friendly and helpful.  The breakfast is really a nice spread and offers options.  Good luck and best wishes to the next group!
  • Navy Mom

Congratulations to you and your sailor.  Mine is just starting FMTB on the 25th.  I think it's going to be a long two months!
  • Scrappy1(Carol)

Thanks Navy and Tenn Navy Moms.  Your Corpsman will do great!
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

Hello All!  Looks like I'll be camping out here in a couple months!  Just wanted to say hello!

  • mamawalrus

Navy Mom.. mine will be there the same time as yours!  Where is your son stationed at before this?
  • Navy Mom

mamawalrus- He's been at CL since beginning of August; before that he was in SA for A school.
  • mamawalrus

Looks like class will start next Monday?  He text me today that he got there around 11 and sent me pic of beds LOL

  • Navy Mom

Talked to mine last night.  Said they spent most of the day standing around waiting for orders.
  • mamawalrus

I got a text today that they got boots LOL  Hurry up and wait  LOL LOL

Do you happen to know the address there yet? Are they all in the same area per say?

  • Navy Mom

Don't know the address but was told a while ago by him that they really don't want mail while they're in training because apparently they get razzed a lot.
  • Scrappy1(Carol)

@mama, mine relocated a few times (don't know if that is normal or they were just lucky, haha) so it would make it hard for the mail to catch up with them.  They have early days, long hours and still pull watch.  You can text but they may not respond right away.
  • mamawalrus

HI all... got an address from him today.. wont be sending alot but will send Thanksgiving and Christmas cards for sure!

Good Luck to them all tomorrow and I know they are all ready to start this up.

  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

Talked to my cub last night.  Said lights out and quiet at 2200 hours.  Can text after that but no talking.  I am guessing they will be too tired for much of anything.  Cub sounded pretty down, maybe a little unsure of the next step?  Said he would be going to other places for more training later...not sure of time frame.

    Good to hear his voice.

  • Navy Mom

Talked to ours on Saturday.  Also sounded a little down.  He is actually happy about the lights out and quiet at 2200.  He was so tired on Friday night he couldn't even stay up and watch our Cardinals win the World Series!!! :)
  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

Cub called again last night, sounded so much better.  SOOOOOOO much like his Dad, gets really anxious nervous quiet and almost grumpy with new things,  Should have known.  :)  Very talkative, almost 45 minutes. Says he goes back to CL after FMTB.  He is excited about Thanksgiving, His grandparents are going down to visit him.
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

Been planning a trip to see my Sailor before he goes to CL...he finds out that after he graduates 11/29 they send him straight there & no Christmas break! His class won't even start till the first of the year! Is this what everyone is finding happen? I'm really disappointed & frustrated! Not to mention my kids! Any info is welcome. I'd search through the posts for this info...but am at work. So using my phone on break :). Thanks everyone!
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

Thank you! We've talked about me just coming to NC to spend time together. He's not my son, but my boyfriend! So this trip was for my kids to get to know him a bit. But some alone time wouldn't be a bad thing either!
  • HvnlySno (S11, DIV 276)

Everything is already paid for....his orders were not what we were expecting. I just wanted to know if everyone elses Sailors were expecting Christmas off. That's all my question was. No worries about the boyfriend vs so thing...I get that alot! This is a Navy for Mom's site after all! Lol!
  • mamawalrus

Son doing well in FMTB.  Very tiring  to say the least but he seems to enjoy it.  He calls me every weekend and text after every test to let me know how he did. LOL

How is everyone else's Sailors liking FMTB?

I think they get 96 hour leave for Christtmas, is that correct?

  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

Our son is in FMTB right now also....I sent you a message:)

  • Navy Mom

to kym ship and mamawalrus - mine too!

  • Kym Ship 11 Div 118

Fun!!!!  Either of you going to graduation?

  • Navy Mom

Unfortunately, we are not going to make the graduation (12/23 fyi). His orders after FMTB are for Milton, FL, so we're hoping to spend the week of xmas down there and hopefully get to visit with him.
