My son has been in Guam since March & says that anything he needs is available there. I do try to send packages once a month or so. I send DVD's, shirts' shorts, certain candy that I know he likes, & local products that he can't get over there. If I'm shopping w/ my daughter & it's hard not to pick him up something too. It's a hard habit to break. LOL!!He just turned 19 in July & I sent him money. He was funny & told me that I "didn't need to that that because he has a job now & can pay for his own things". I told him "too bad, that he will always be my son & I will always give him something on his birthday".  I am very fortunate to Skype w/him 1-2 x's a week & we talk @ least 3-4 x's a week. He has been very good about staying in touch w/us & his grandmothers. Thank God for Skype & Facebook!!  It was really hard on me when he left last Aug. because he had just graduated & just turned 18, & he is my oldest & the first one to leave.  It's just hard to believe that he's grown up so much in the last year.  Navy4Moms has been a huge help! Thank you all!!

    Hi All,

Murphys law missed two of my sailors messages.lol

  • Irene McClure

Iwent over there this past March. It was great.Stayed on the Big Navy Base. Went to see my Daughter and son-n-law.1 st granddaughter was born there. Coolest it gets 70's. Summer time all year. A huge K-mart( alittle pricy). Laid back. Speed limit like 35 mph.Alot of beaches to visit. It's U.S. territory so lots of american things do exist.Gas is more expensive. If you get the chance to go over there while your Sailor is there, then go. There is long hrs. of flying but it is experience you will alway treasure. My daughters Mom-n-law and sister-n-law just got back. They loved it.

    Good Morning Guam Moms,

Hope everyone is having a great day. I am wondering if anyone knows how my son would go about sending  Sausage and Pepper (not sure what kind) from Guam back to the states.  I have a friend that asked my son to mail them 2 items  from Guam  to them in New York. I don't know how he would package them to do so.

    Thanks for any advise.

    Lois

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

I have a question also! My son was wondering where he would go to get a passport in Guam.  He never got one before he left & would like to get one in case he decides to travel while he's stationed there. Are there different passports for military members? Thanks for any info.
  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Lois: I'm guessing he would go to the post office on base and they could direct him how to mail packages home.

Please keep Tyler in your prayers...he'll have 3 wisdom teeth cut out August 26th there in Guam...he said they weren't giving him any problems and you couldn't see them in his gum...I was truly wishing they would wait until deployment was over in the fall and do this in Gulfport...then he could take 1 week leave and be at home to recover...

  • Lois in OK

    @ rsv227 Devin's mom,

I just asked my son where he got his and he said it is in the same building that houses  DMV  and registrations

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Thank you, Lois:) I will pass the info onto my son.

seems my son missed an exam he wanted to take because mailclerk stopped him i got yelled at for not putting R2 on the address.. i did put R2 on the addresss just what his brother and he sent to me.. he did apologize...why do they have to be so bad.. the clerks that is... hopefully some one mentioned taking an exam on sept 15th so he can take his then..  i don't get much communication... and his sister isn't talking to me so i can't ask her. (long story which doesn't bear repeating.. (step daughter to me if that explains anything or not i feel she's taking anger about her dad and or brother going into navy out on me cause i've tried to change and be better person..)enjoying my alone time with hubby now with college and navy we're empty nesters..
  • LivNLrn

@kumi- i heard that is a possibility and there was a meeting explaining but that's all i know. i heard its not 100% for sure though.
  • jmazzsmom

okay he did get all his testing done. has to wait till march for E-4 testing because he hasn't been on ship long enough.. had a chance to skype with him on his birthday, even though he was up at GL for Christmas feel this year will miss him even more...
  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

has anyone sent baked goods to Guam?  I'd like to send my son some cookies but not sure if they'd fare well.
  • Mom to Guam HM

My daughter just graduated Hospital Corpsman A-School this morning and leaves for Guam tomorrow. Any general basics i should know as a Momma??

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

My son is an HM @ the Hospital in Guam. He has been there since March, he went there right from A-school also. If you'd like, or your daughter would like,  I can give you his name & contact info & he could help her get aquainted. Private message me if you'd like his info. Good luck to her! I haven't been there but my son says it's beautiful.
  • Mom to Guam HM

Thank you! I'll relay the info and I've jut requested you as a friend rsv227.....I would love to have any pointers at all. thanks again :)
  • Irene McClure

I Went to Guam Last March to be there when my Granddaughter was born. I loved the Hospital. They were all so nice to us. If you ever get the chance to go,by all means take it. It's really a relaxing trip. It is such a laid back island. We miss it. We miss our daughter and her family. They have been there 3 years.Hopefully they will be back to the states for the next duty.

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Hi Everyone....my son is heading to Guam at the beginning of Dec. Please tell me he is going to love it! Lol....his rate is IT and he will be on the USS Frank Cable....anyone out there with someone on the Cable?
  • luvinmatt

My husband is on the cable. Guam is awesome the cable is kinda ...meh.
  • jmazzsmom

Charlotte, my son is at Guam and loves it.. only drawback is transporation getting out and about they make do..he is a mm assigned to Cable but on landbase right now.

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Thank you luvinmatt and jmazzsmom......i was wondering about communication. He has an iphone...is that going to work in Guam....is he better off purchasing something over there? Do they have computer access everyday? I'm sure these are not questions that he cares about as much as I do!! So sometimes they are on the Cable and sometimes at the landbase? Sorry if that is a silly question....new Navy mom here....he has been in 6 months. Thanks again!
  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Charlotte, my son is also in Guam. He is a Corpsman @ the Naval Hospital. He was fortunate enough to purchase a car from a fellow Corpsman not long after he arrived there. He has only been there since mid-March.  One of his good friends, who is also from our hometown, is stationed there & is assigned to the Cable. Fell free to private message me & I can give you their names.  As for phone service, my son had a Droid when he went to Guam & wasn't able to use. He purchased a Blackberry & has a plan w/ GTA for his cell, internet, & cable. We talk very often & also Skype quite a bit......Thank GOD!!!!  Good luck to you & your son!!:)
  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Thank you for the info rsv277.....my son is wondering if he will have barracks on land when they are docked? What kind of 'things' did your son bring...laptop, xbox, golf clubs? He graduates A school on Nov. 10 and I can't wait for him to be home for several weeks!
  • luvinmatt

If he can get his current company to unlock the phone before he leaves he can get a plan with GTA and use it. IF he cant get them to unlock it he can get an iphone here through GTA they are pretty cheap. Barracks rooms are on land. He might have to stay at the ship for a couple of days till they assign him a room. Bring everything he has, this is his new home. If he used it on a regular basis before boot camp he will probably want it with him. The barracks rooms are pretty nice. If he has a car get it shipped he will want to have it. IF he does not have a car they are plentiful on island. You can find them cheap if you dont mind ugly.
  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Thanks luvinmatt!....is the Cable currently out to sea or in port? Are the long distance fees alot to phone home or text message?? What about a bike on the island....can you get most places on a bike or small motorcycle?? He is in really good shape....I could NOT ride a bike every where I needed to go! Lol
  • Pat

Approx distances looking at a map.

7-12 miles wide; 30-35 miles long; depends on where he wants to go, how many friends he has with wheels and how independent he wants to be.  Rainy season would make a bike/motorcycle uncomfortable...

  • luvinmatt

Charlotte I answered some of your questions on the Frank Cable page sorry. Long Distance fees... depends on what you mean. If he brings a phone from the US and tries to use it here it will be VERY expensive, when I checked it was like 1.99 a minute or something.  So we turned our state side phones off. If he is under contract he can use his orders to turn it off with no fee.  When we first got here we picked up and iconnect phone just to get something quick. They are very basic no frills phones. for 30 bucks a month we got 1000 minutes and unlimited calls to the US.  Then my husband wanted "real" cell phones lol. So  we ended up getting Iphone which run us 80 bucks a month per phone. They dont have any unlimited calling to the US packages so it costs us .10 cent a minute on those phones to call back home. As far as a using a bike exclusively a non motorized one he could use it to get back and forth to work. I know a few people who do. He would probably be miserable doing it lol. Lots of people use motorcycles or scooters as their main transportation. That is totally doable. If he is comfortable riding in the rain he will be fine. But really there are lots of cheap cars you can find one under 5K pretty quickly and if he handy he could find one even cheaper. My husband paid 1400 for our second car. Man it is ugly but it runs and when we leave we will be able to sell it quickly when we leave. Hmm what elses about Guam, ohhh this was a surprise to me when we got here. The ship is not on the mail base. It is over at Polaris Point which is about a 10-15 minute car drive from base. That is where he will go work at everyday.
  • Mom to Guam HM

I'm looking for anyone on Guam that may be a Christian and would be able to help my daughter find a church.

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

What goes on  for Thanksgiving? For the Sailors who do not have family w/them on Guam, does the base offer dinner to them? Last year my son was still in A-School for Thanksgiving & I believe he had dinner right on base. He hasn't mentioned too much about the holiday & I'm not even sure if he has duty that day or not.  I guess it's just a "mom thing" but I'd like him to have a tradional Thanksgiving dinner & not eating @ Subway or something.
  • Irene McClure

Usually a group of the friends get together and bring cover dishes and meet at someones home. They have lots of fun doing that. I think that would be alot of fun. If you ever get a chance to go to Guam to be with your Sailor, do it. It was great. My husband and I went last March for the first grandbaby to be born. We were there for 2 weeks. Took lots of pictures and saw alot of things.
  • luvinmatt

he will have somewhere to go between his friends and the USO. He will just have to pick where he wants to go.
  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Thanks for all of the input, I will pass it along to my son. As for visiting Guam, I would love to but I'm not sure it's the cards for me.  Fortunately, he is only there for 2 yrs & he's hoping to come home maybe in Feb.
  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

What about Christmas? Is there something planned for the sailors who dont have family with them. The thought of my baby boy being alone on Christmas makes me so sad
  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Our deployment in Guam is almost over....They'll all be home by the holidays...this has been a long 8 months...

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

my son was on call & got called into work on Thanksgiving:( He was able to make it to a friends house for leftovers later though. I was able to talk to him a few different times throughout the holiday. Thanksgiving wasn't to bad w/out him here but I'm definatley not going to like not having him here for xmas. I've sent 2 packages so far & getting another one ready. I've also put together xmas care packages for a couple of his buddies who are in Afganistan. Just wish they could all be home for the holidays. On a happier note.....I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving & are enjoying the holiday season.

    Hey Everyone!!!

It has been sometime since I have been on here. How is everyone doing? How many of us still have Sailors in Guam? I still have my Sailors there. I hope ya'll have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!

    Ga. Navy Mom Hug!!

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Hi! My son just arrived in Guam on Dec. 4. He is getting adjusted. He needs a car and is not having great luck finding one but in time he will, i'm sure. This will be our first Christmas without him home so I am trying to prepare myself for that :(. He is IT and will be in Guam 3 years.

  • NJNavy (IC,CS)

    Hello,

Have to be honest kinda different without our sailor not being home for Christmas this year .......and changing ships hoping all xmas packages will be there for Christmas week....

    Diane

  • Tiffsmom

I am brand new to this group. My son arrived in Guam early December. I have lots of computer contact with him, but finally just spoke to him on the phone over the weekend!!! He sounded great! He is glad to be in barracks, as he has been on the ship since he first went overseas in July!! Will miss him terribly over Christmas!! This is his first year, so our first Christmas without him home..... Miss him terribly
  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

We did Christmas and my sons birthday (Dec. 13) before he left and now I am regretting not waiting and mailing the gifts but we just weren't sure if he would know his address or if it would ship in time. I just shipped him his golf clubs and Xbox and I am praying they get there before the Cable leaves or if they don't that they will be forwarded to him somehow.  Tiffsmom and NJNavyMom what are your sailors rates? This is going to be a tough Christmas day!! Hugs to all of you!

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

This is also my 1st xmas w/o my son. He was able to be home last year because he was still in A-school. It sure is going to be different:( I sent him his gifts & he received them just 1wk after I shipped them!!  Of course, he opened them all already!!  Oh well.... I actually sent 3 xmas packages, the 1st was a sm. 18in fake xmas tree which I had decorated for him, the 2nd was a Navy Corpsman xmas stocking which I filled to the brim & also added a few of his gifts in that box, & the 3rd box (which cost me $40 + to send) was his presents. The mom in me just couldn't resist! I'm looking forward to Skyping w/him xmas eve, we always have a family get together @ our house so this way, he'll be able to see & chat w/ alot of people he hasn't seen in a while. It won't be the same w/o him here but @ least I know that he is in a safe place for now. Merry Christmas to everyone & welcome to all the new members!!  Hoping for a safe & happy holiday season for all of our Sailors & their families!!

  • Charlotte(ship02Div930)

Merry Christmas to all our Sailors in Guam!!!

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Merry Christmas to all of our families in Guam!! And to all of the other service members all over the world!

  • Tiffsmom

Merry Christmas to our Sailors in Guam and to all of their families at home, and to all of our Navy For Moms!!!
  • Irene McClure

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!! I sent my boxes to Guam for my Sailors on Dec. 3. It's Dec.26th and they have not yet recieved them. They checked with the post office and, they were told that they were swamped with boxes. That it would be after Christmas recieving their boxes. What really stinks about it, The boxes have been there since the 15th. I have not ever had that problem. My daughter has been there 3.5 yrs. Son-n-law 3 yrs. When they get their boxes of gifts,we are going to skype so we can have Christmas with them(daughter,son-n-law,granddaughter).
