Thanks for the heads-up on the coin! Awesome. Am a customer of the NWT Mint. Love there site. I've picked up base coins for the sandbox, Great Lakes, San Antonio & recently for San Diego. Also picked up a NAVY coin knife for my husband & SS for last Valentine's Day. They really liked them!
Hi everyone, I am new to this group and I will be moving to Bahrain in February. My husband is on a minesweeper but I was looking for information on Bahrain. We have three kids, one 13, one 10 and the youngest 3. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Christie! I moved here a couple months ago. It is beautiful and the people are very nice and peaceful. There's just two of us and a dog and we got a villa with 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a shared pool and gym and garden for our dog. Our friends got a villa in Floating City- they literally have a lagoon for their backyard- google it! My husband is truly happier this time around with me and the dog here and living in his own space again. Things to be ready for: The most paperwork of any PCS! My Dependent Entry Approval was delayed on the Bahrain end. Apparently, it sat on someone's desk while on vacation (that was the story)- well what we did not know was, without a DEA, your HHG will be handled differently until you get the paper. A shipping company basically, loosely packs your stuff more for storage than for shipping. It goes into storage and waits til you are approved and you must rush to PPO with it so they will send it out for the next shipment.- And you will not see them properly pack it- so I have no idea what condition the shipment will arrive in! In our case this means waiting a total of 5-6 months from the time it was first picked up to finally get our things here (yup, still waiting)! There is much more paperwork involved with moving to Bahrain (especially with kids, pets, car) so be very organized and stay on top of everyone! Once you get here you have to apply for a VISA and a CPR card. When I have the CPR you can apply for a DL I guess- I haven't gotten to that yet. You have 30 days to drive then you need to get a license. I have not driven at all because the driving is crazy here! I highly suggest you all wait to get your place once you get here and stay in a hotel for the full 45 day per diem. Best to see the homes in person and there is NO shortage of real estate here! The base is nice, the NEX is combined into a commissary, sort of- so it has all the basics, but not like a big supermarket or a typical Commissary in the states. There is plenty more I can tell you. If you have any specific q's just inbox me.
Hello Everyone. I have a question or 2. My son will be heading that way in mid November. Just out of MA School. What should he take with him and should not? Once he gets to the Norfolk on a friday will he have liberty? He is visiting his dad for the majority of the free time before he goes. I live fairly close to Norfolk and would love to see him before he goes. Does anyone have any tips I can pass on and any information about what will happens once he reports to Norfolk?
We just moved here and stayed in a hotel our entire 45 days while looking for our villa. We stayed in the hotel that long because you receive "per diem" - daily extra pay that more than compensates. Also, it actually takes about that long to sign for the place he gets (he will have several housing meetings and a security inspection before he is allowed to move in). When he stays in a hotel he will be reimbursed. FOr reimbursement, he gets a stamped "paid" receipt for the front desk of the hotel (some hotels can make up a receipt in advance if you are very nice, persuasive, patient and get a knowledgeable manager to help you out) in 10 day increments. He takes the receipt and fills out a TLA form at the Housing office on base. To make the move out there easier, he has advance entitlements he can apply for- he needs to visit his Admin to get it rolling (his command can show him where the Admin is). he should consider applying for the OHA and DLA advances he is entitled to, so when he has to pay his deposit for rent- which will be a LOT of money here- he doesn't get sapped of savings. His admin can explain the per diem, TLA, DLA, OHA/MIHA, etc.
If he will not have a car, he should find a place really close to base because walking/ biking in summer will be really hot. He should make sure he will not be "sharing" internet strength (ours is provided by a sim card on a VIVA phone plan and works great. And ask for at least one powerful transformer if he is bringing any appliances or other electrical stuff like a TV, stereo, radio, etc. Cell phones and laptops are fine with just a small convertor. But a transformer makes using the other stuff safe. I have already blown out a fan I bought because I mistakenly plugged it into a convertor instead of transformer. I know, confusing right? Also, tell him to MAKE SURE it has "American" dishwasher, washer/ dryer- otherwise a cycle can be 3-4 hours long and the buttons might be hard to figure out! With his OHA, he should be able to find a place that has almost anything he desires (pool, gym, pool table, etc.) He should look at 6-12 places because every place will be nicer than the last and he should be comfortable and happy while here in the desert! For example, our villa is amazing (3 br, 4 bath, office, DR, big screen TV/ stereo, DVD, pool, gym, garage, huge kitchen with microwave, washer/dryer and dishwasher, garden for the dog, etc.) for just the two of us and any guests. We didn't need the extra rooms- but we needed a CLEAN place that accepted dogs and a garden. He can do just as nicely in any of the high rises if he does not want to feel isolated. I hope this helps? Sorry so long but it can be complicated here! If he needs a trusted realtor, PM me!
I sent a Vonage phone device with a local (Arizona) number for my son. It's like he's right next door. No country code, no area code, pick up and dial local and he answers. They need to have a good internet connection for the Vonage phone to work well.
My son tells me there is a Chili's across the street from his flat. I'd love to buy him some Chili's gift cards, but wasn't sure if he could use them there. Anyone know?
I saw the comment about the Chili's. I would love to know if gift cards can be used. If yes, what types of places are there that you can buy gift cards to be used at?
There is a Chilis, Hard Rock, Fridays and Macaroni Grill! (Also lots of Baskin Robbins and a DQ.) I am sure they would accept their gift cards- maybe check their websites?
After the newer part of the base is complete there may be more barracks. Although, my son thought it was beneficial for both the sailors & the locals to interact socially & financially out in the community.
My boyfriend is being stationed in Bahrain, and I was wondering about the internet over there. Will we be able to skype and iMessage. Are there only certain spots on base that they can get wifi?
Thanks. I just didn't know how often I would be able to talk to him. He is an MA and he said they have 12 hour shifts. I figured we could skype on his off days, on friday and saturday.
Could that pay have been discontinued due to budgeting & not necessarily the easing of tensions. After all they have been at each other for years. My MA did say that he usually felt safe from the local conflicts, even had locals who he considered friends, he was more concerned with outside influences. He mentioned that shift length can change due to needs. It's not strictly a "9 to 5".
Hello All! Just to start out, I am not a Navy mom, I am married to a Navy Seabee that is currently in Bahrain. This is all new to me...he has been Navy for 16 years but we have only been married for a year and a half and this is my first IA with him. I am an emotional wreck most of the time. He has been gone for only 2 months and feel as though it has been centuries. So, I just want to connect with others that have family in Bahrain.
Lovemyseabee, Welcome! My son is stationed in Bahrain and assigned to the USS Thunderbolt. I would encourage you to join several groups on here; it's a great to get info and feel connected!
Hello Lovemyseabee, I am a Mom of an MA in Bahrain. He will be leaving Bahrain in March to a new base-let's say "Elsewhere"------must check if that is confidential? That being said, read the instructions of the Web-site. I did not, and found there were some things to withhold as to info. My Son has so enjoyed his stay in Bahrain. All the groups of Sailors he has worked with- in many different capacities have been wonderful. As of now, this is a great base and even with some Global "Blips" it has remained so, in the 2 plus years my son has been there. This is not an easy base to get to- but is an area worth going to if you wish. (travel to Dubia while there-just a Hop and a skip). Your Husband will be well tended to by his Peers. The training is phenomenal. As ChrisyDVM said-join other groups as well- you are sure to meet up with someone in a similar circumstance. I would think this group is a good resource for quick responses, Moms hovering.... Do not be an Emotional Wreck. My son the youngest of our children- very attached to us did great. He was not yet 20 when he arrived. The more mature Saliors do very well. Make some travel plans. Do some volunteer work to feel you are supporting the Troops. Easy stuff- get friends and family or church or a local school to send Christmas notes or little care boxes... Plan a few things like this duri g his Deploy and poof- time is up. He will be home. Heart ache can be a jump off to growing pains. He will meet a strong and happy proud Navy wife upon his return. Tick tock... That old saying "Time passes whether you are having fun or not" is too true. Try to rely on friends and family. And serve somewhere in the simplest way. It will help. I promise. (I can't scroll up for spell check or typo's- hope this is correct?!) my Best to you, be well. Thank you for your families service and sacrifice to our Nation!
my son is over in Bahrain, and I have to say sometimes it's easy and sometimes its hard. I thank is hardest when we don't hear from him for a long time. He seems to be feeling a little homesick now that the holidays are rounding on us. We will get through this and so will you. I think the trick to all of this is to remember this is only for a short time. Please know that you are not alone and I'll be thinking of you. :-)
Lovemy seabee - my sailor is happy with his job over there and would chose it again. It is hard when they are gone and I am physically not up to traveling right now, so skype and phone work well for us
Just joined this website. My son will be going to Bahrain THIS Saturday. He has been in Navy less than a year and we are slowly adapting to the fact that he will be traveling! He is excited to go but I cannot shake the sadness. Trying to keep in mind that he is heading for the adventure of a lifetime... we haven't used skype or facetime yet (is that the same thing?) but are planning on it. Not sure of phone use either. He loves to call home and talk for 2 hours!! He WAS a homebody! anyway, any comments will be much appreciated...
My daughter will go to Bahrain in Jan, not sure of date yet, still in school in Texas until Dec 19, so I pray she gets to come home before she go's. But I do have a nephew there since Nov 2 . We talk to him on facebook daily. He emails his mom also daily and Skype's with use. They can buy throwaway phones to use also once they get there. I called Verizon and they say they also work over there, so I am going to check that out a little more because we use them. I know texting would be free with our plan. hope this helps
Welcome to the new Moms! My MA son also was fast tracked to the sandbox. Joined in Feb. 2010 & in the sand by Father's Day! It is an abrupt change for everyone. Our sailors have the excitement of new adventures on their side. We have a shipping box from BC, no feet thundering through the house & an empty room full of dear memories. I couldn't have gotten through these almost four years without the N4Ms site & this group. Ask questions, share info, vent, cry, moan & rant. We've been where you are or will be there. Lean on these ladies, we are all sea sisters. Also, are trained professionals of the "Bahrain NAVY Mom Happy Dance Boogie", reserved for happy happenings. Limber up your happy feet, freshen your waterproof mascara & embrace the journey. You have company.
Hello all! My son arrived 1 week ago. On a hunch I did a search on the main page & couldn't believe it when this page showed. I've been on the site from "boot camp moms " and on. My boy is in the Bahrain Air Force base. I wonder if anyone else has a child or spouse there. I was so sad leading up to the day my boy deployed (it's a first ). Cried so hard the day he left - and no I didn't get to see him before he left of course. But it's amazing how quickly I got over it. I don't have a choice, do I? Haha!!!! He was excited to go. He's assigned to an aircrew.
My son's been in the 'sandbox' since March of this year. I'm sure all of us here were a little apprehensive when we first heard our sailor was going to Bahrain. I'm still adjusting but, the phone calls, (at odd times), and the facebook messages make it a little easier. Fortunately, he will be home for Christmas this year and I am looking forward to that! Keep coming to this site for info and support. The moms here are one awesome bunch!!
I became a member since I was told by my son he asked to go to Bahrain...I usually read posting...Since Dec,he will be going there, right now he is home as a "see you later"....trip. He is very nice and gentle young man, with me,his mom, and everybody else.I'm trying my best to give him the "cool, calm and collected" attitude, a "smiley" face, doing my best in the kitchen....Blessings to ALL Sailors and families on Thanksgiving Day...and Always!!!
Thank you all... went to Verizon to get temporary disconnection for his phone. He is allowed to take it with him and use it as an internet device- this is news to me! as long as there is wifi, he can use it to access FB/internet.
Talked to my son! He is visiting with some friends in an apartment building there off of the navy base ( mine is staying in a different base ). Someone's parents are there visiting & cooked everyone a Thanksgiving dinner! To think there is a navy mom out there in Bahrain feeding my boy. I'm so thankful for that. Last year there was a navy dad in California feeding him Thanksgiving dinner. Truly blessed. Happy Thanksging!!
Have another question,if anybody can answer, because of sec... When the sailors arrive in Norfolk, is it easy to do next step? Let say my son arrives this day and leaves for Bahrain the next day....
Hi mother_always- That pretty much happened to my husband. But he needed a gov issued passport and credit card. Don't know if it will be the same in your son's situation or if he is flying commercial or AMC (gov plane). In my husband's case, he flew commercial. Before leaving, he received new orders, filled out all the passport/ cc paperwork and when admin office received each, they mailed them to the admin office overseas. Different offices & commands sometimes handle things differently and place different emphasis on procedures (although it is supposed to all be the same!)- sometimes it depends on how organized the superiors are!
Thank you for answering LivNLrn. My son got his passport,he showed to me and he got his orders...wanted to know if he has to go to a military base,he says he knows where to go when he arrive at Norfolk.Right now he came to PR for the "hasta luego" time....
Good evening, everyone. It has been a while since I have been here. Been busy with school and life. Welcome, new comers. It is an awesome group to be a member of. I couldn't have made it these last two years without this wonderful group of ladies and gentlemen. Our sailor is looking at six more months and then hopefully, stateside. Counting down the days already.
When he arrived at Norfolk, he checked in and went straight to the plane. He was only there a couple of hours before he left.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was sort of lonesome around our house. Our middle son wasn't able to come home, so it was just the three of us. Our 14 year old is really missing her brothers. I think it is harder on her than it is on us.
Have a great evening and wishing everyone a wonderful week.
mother_always Every person's situation is different on arrival. Your son should be assigned a sponsor to pick him up at the airport and take him where he needs to be. And/or, he should be checking in with his command as per instructions on his orders. At the very least, he should have an email or phone number of someone in the command to call on that can tell him what he needs to do next. Are you asking because he does not know who his sponsor is or how to reach his command for further instruction?

skyping and messaging seem to be no problem.
As far as living on the base vs off, I've heard the benefit of staying off base is they don't get stuck doing certain duties as those living there.
Bahrain must be pretty safe. The military has removed the imminent danger pay there.

From what I understand, the military has deemed it not hazardous. They allow families to live there, so it must not be much of a problem.
However, I couldn't say if it is based on a budgeting decision. I'm not privy to that sort of info.
Just to add, I've got a friend who is not in the military and lives there. Says he jogs past the base every day. Says he feels totally safe there.

Good morning
Hope you all had a nice weekend!
So this means that he don't have to leave this airport?

mother_always Every person's situation is different on arrival.
