Texas' Moms

Hi! Has anyone driven from Texas to Illinois for boot camp graduation?  We're traveling from Houston and looking for tips on the trip.  I reserved the Residence Inn for 2 nights near the Great Lakes Naval Base.  My husband wants to drive straight through, but I'm thinking a stop 1/2 way is the way to go.  Thanks!

We drove straight through from Humble with the twin and our 60 lbs dog. Not bad drive we are kinda use to traveling as my daughter moves alot. We drive up through Texarkana and over to Memphis then straight up. Took about17 hours with several stops. We will do it again in June or July when twin has PIR.

Hi Laura and welcome I don't get on much right now. I work alot lol. But this place was my saving grace when DS left for Bootcamp.

Great!  Thanks for the feedback!  So we are not totally crazy?  And we are taking our two dogs:  a corgi and a lab mix.  Looks like the driving straight through is winning.  We are thinking it will be an 18 hour trip.

HI!  I haven't been on this site in a long time.  Eight years ago when our son graduated we spent the night going up there from Dallas, but we felt it was a waste of time, so we drove straight through coming back.  It was hard, but felt it was worth it!

We are flying SW on a Wednesday for PIR in March rates were reasonable and flying back on Monday.

glenda we are driving from just south of dallas, i love road trips so driving strait thru hopefully wont be a problem, just hoping the blizzards are over by the time we get there....we are heading out that wednesday morning at 3am...

Hi All! My Sailor is currently in Pensacola for A-School. He graduated bootcamp 01/24/2014 from BC in GL. I envy those of you going now for graduation as opposed to going in January. The weather there is/was brutal. Congratulations to your new Sailors! My Sailor is having a blast and loving the Navy!

Hello all! I am just east of San Antonio. My SR left for RTC on 2/11/14. Expected PIR is 4/11/14. I received "The Box" on Monday this week, but no letter yet. Anyone else nearby? Any others whose SR went to RTC last week?

@6pakmom-let's stay in touch! Especially since we are close geographically!

@J's mom - As I understand, there are strict limits of 3-4 guests at PIR. The final determination of 3 v 4 guests will be made once the total number of SRs in the division/s are tallied. I believe there are some allowances for very young children. You may want to review info at the RTC website for more detailed info.

@J's mom - I can find that out for you. I do know that those not traveling to RTC can watch streaming PIRs online at the RTC website.

@J's mom - Just checked with my RTC contact. Standing room for "extra" guests is still available on CC TV in the chapel on base.

I said that wrong...Standing room in the base chapel w/PIR broadcast on CC TV there. DUH...!

I'm new to Navy4Moms . I'm from Cedar Park, Tx a town north of Austin. I'm hoping to find other Mom's that live in the area . My son will be leaving to Boot Camp June 17, 2014 and after that he will be start his training as a combat corpsman ( Medic )

A tremendous relief J'smom! He is going into his 4th week at BC. So all of this is very new to us. Thank God we found this page!

I am a newbie on here - my son left today for Boot camp.  I am from Lubbock, TX.  He is my baby and today was a very hard day for me ~ but not him he is so very excited and has already determined that the NAVY will be his career! 

Anyone with an SR with a PIR date of March 21? My SR was cleared for full duty and got this new PIR date.

Pretty sure he is finishing up hell week J's mom. You have one on a ship and one going in. You must be one proud Mama!  We live for those calls and they live for the letters. 

Robsproudmom -- My son is in Div. 118 and graduating on March 21.  Will you be attending Sarge's Meet and Greet?  If so, we will see you there!

J's mom -  I got a text from my son earlier, he has been delayed again, and won't leave until next week on Monday.  He said it was not as busy today as it had been before so he was able to get through processing faster.  But I am not complaining about having him for another week.  Hope yours goes well!

Hello, for Whitewright. My son has been in Great Lakes since Sept 9th. He graduated BC 11-8 and was on hold for 13 weeks.  His job is Damage Control.  He finally got to start A school and should be through mid April, hopefully.  He doesn't like snow or cold weather at all.  If you haven't gotten to send a package, don't pay extra to get it there sooner, it will sit at the base Post Office until they get ready to deliver it.  

I'm from Cedar Park ( Austin area)  I'm hoping to meet some Navy Mom's from the same area .
