J's/S's mom...It is nearly 18 hr for me to drive...I plan to leave by 12noon on Wed, and finish up Thurs. Hoping to be at Meet n Greet on time!!! Wish I knew when my SR was flying out, so I could determine if I am going to be back Mon am for work!! Getting nervous! Got the room, door decorations, tide pen, towelette wipes, and a white towel for uniform. Worried that I will be late!! But my daughters are meeting me from OH, so they can help their frazzled mom!!!

  • Dorothy

Good evening!! I'm in the Houston area. My son is currently in bootcamp then on to Nuke school.
  • Bandit1998

Hi Dorothy:  We live in Palacios which is half way between Houston and Corpus Christi...our boy (son and grandson) is also currently in boot camp and his PIR date is 6/20/14

  • Thetribemom

Is someone here from Palacious....Hubby and I are are wanting to get away and thought about driving south along the coast.....Any thoughts ???

  • Bandit1998

Yes.  We live in Palacios.  Not too much here, (pop. 5,000) but we are one of the largest shrimp fishing harbors along the Gulf Coast.  Don't know what your likes/dislikes are, but we are 30 miles from the beach at Matagorda, and the South Texas Nuclear Plant is 16 miles from us.  Largest town is Bay City, about 20,000 pop. Highway 35 follows the coast line pretty much from Palacios to Aransas Pass and on to Corpus Christi.

  • Dorothy

Thank you J's/S'smom! My son's PIR date is 7/3/14. Bandit1998, just a few hours away from us.
  • SplashMom

Hello Moms!...just outside of weird here (Austin)...my Sailor is getting ready to graduate dive school in Panama City...fingers crossed of course! I'm happy to see activity on this page, take care everyone...;)

Bandit1998: I am a 5th generation Texan, and very proud of it too. My 5th great grandfather was a transplant from Tennessee and served as a Texas Ranger in the Republic of Texas. He was killed in a battle with the Indians and was laid to rest at Ft. Belknap. One branch of my family has been traced back to the Dutch settlers and the earliest colonies. I have a cousin that chronicled the history and published a book.

May 2014 Navy Mom Dinner May DFW Mom Dinner - We had a fantastic evening together, celebrating promotion announcements and catching up on all the news. It was great to welcome two new moms to our group in May. We have such fun at our dinners!

  • harpist mom

J's,  Our group got together on this website. Two years ago some of us posted that we lived in the Dallas area and ought to get together sometime. I finally set a date, time, and place, and about six moms showed up at our first dinner in July 2012. We have met monthly at various Dallas restaurants ever since and have become good friends. You could post a "shout out" to all Ft. Worth area Navy moms and see what kind of response you get. Wishing you the best of luck!

  • SummerRainbow

Hi J's/S'smom, I reside in Johnson County, and I believe there are a few other moms that do also.  We should have a lunch/dinner sometime!

  • mmpurdie

Im in Wise county and would love to get together with moms or other families.

Someone help me out:  What does RPOC and AROC stand for?  Navy Speak doesn't give me the answer.  I think it stands for something like Recruit Petty Officer C----? and AROC ?

  • Geraley T

Bandit, My son PIR'ed two years ago. But he explained RPOC and AROC position as basically the traffic control for their division. They have go before and after the division when they are marching and stop traffic. They also call the cadences or chants they march to.
  • Bandit1998

Thank you for responding to my question.  I should have been able to figure that one out as he had told us he was a Division Leader.  He also go promoted to E2 after four weeks of Basic, so I guess he is doing well.  He is also a Yeoman which means clerical work, I think.

  • Bandit1998

ooops!  Missed the "t" in that word "go".  GOT and he had told us he called the cadence, so I guess he is AROC.

    Hi Ladies!

Just have to share a story with y'all.  My husband and I took the weekend and went to Lake Tawakoni  to do some fishing, and relaxing.  On Saturday I went to a nail salon in a close small town, and got a pedicure.  A nice lady sitting across the table from me was chatting about her sons wedding the next day, and since he was in the Navy she was so excited.  Turns out after a few minutes of conversation, he had just graduated from A school a few days ago and I shared my son graduated from BC May 16.  Its such a small world and was wonderful to share with another navy mom.

I didn't catch her name but if she should read this, I just wanted to say Thanks! It made my day! and I always look forward to running into more Navy Moms!  Only one of us can know that feeling!

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

I love Lake Tawakoni!  Did you fish for catfish or hybrids?  George is a great fishing guide if you ever want to hire one.  My son is just now finishing "A" school in Goose Creek, SC.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

I'm outside Fort Worth on the western side, as in Springtown.  My son is finishing "A" school at Goose Creek, SC, and is about to drive home for a visit at the end of this month.

  • SummerRainbow

I am in Cleburne area.  Not to far from you all.  and Yes, enjoy PIR.  The pride and excitement you feel when those doors open you see your sailor is nothing to compare to!  I hope you have the entire weekend, and even that goes by fast.  Take lots of pictures, get and give lots of hugs!  Safe travels to you when you go!

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

My son is rated ET.  :)

  • SummerRainbow

Lynn, we drove and it was so worth it! And if you don't make it to Sarge's meet and greet, I got some great tips!

  • SummerRainbow

Yes loop around St. Louis and Chicago if you can.  We took 355 (toll road) all the way up to Libertyville and then over to North Chicago, it was about 45mins out of the way, but no traffic, other than some red lights.  It was 3.25 in change. I skipped Chicago altogether for driving. We took train down to Chicago and rode over to the Navy Pier for some fun!  If you don't have the entire weekend, just relax, and enjoy the time you do have! There are plenty of parks along Lake Michigan with scenery to enjoy and lighthouses to see.  They make for good photos!

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

J's/S's mom - My son took an unusual path.  He already graduated from college with a degree in electrical engineering but joined the Navy as enlisted.  *pounds head against wall*

  • Michelle

My son left today to boot camp from San Antonio I'm very proud and excited for him but also sad he is my oldest so the first to leave home . I'm going to miss him very much.

  • 1Bodyprof

@L3Gmom: College isn't for everyone but maybe he will use the military education program to finish later. Good he is not just out of high school but has some college experience behind him!
  • Michelle

1Bodyprof I'm glade you joined and Hook `em Horns !!
  • Bandit1998

I live in Palacios, TX which is in Matagorda County on Matagorda Bay.  My best friend's son, wife (and their two children - except they are away at college) also live in New Braunfels.  Their last name is Tucker.  They've been wanting me to come up and see the new addition and pool they recently added to their house which is right by the River, but haven't made it up there yet.

  • 1Bodyprof

@ Bandit: must be the year for pools because we got one too! Don't think I know any Tuckers. We live out of town on 3 acres. Come in the fall when it is cooler.
  • 1Bodyprof

ugh! Came home to heat and very dry grass. : (
  • Mary123Sons

It's been a while since I've been on.  I have two active in fleet.  Just took my 3rd and last son to MEPS today and just got a text he just landed in Chicago about 30 min ago.  Very hard for us to come home to an empty house, the dog isn't even here.  We boarded her for a couple nights so we could stay in Houston last night.

  • 3boymom_texas

Mary123Sons, my oldest also left from Houston today for Great Lakes. Maybe they were on the same flight.
  • 1Bodyprof

J's/s'smom: It could be a lot hotter. Haven't reached triple digits in Central Tx yet, thank God!
  • basmom07

My daughter arrived at GL yesterday evening. She was already wanting to come home. I had to hold it together and encourage her. It'll be an adjustment but I know she will do great.

  • SummerRainbow

basmom07~ Wish you the very best for your daughter through bootcamp!  I think most of us have already been through bootcamp at least once.  I have a daughter going soon, and a son looking to go next year, and one son is currently at A School in GL. Happy to help you through the bumps anytime!  Bootcamp moms group, and after you get your form letter, your PIR group will help alot! The admins will also form a FB group for your PIR also.  Joining those will help answer questions and you will find the letter writing so fun!  Again best wishes and looking forward to welcoming a new sailor!

  • 1Bodyprof

basmom07: I bet she has a great experience as she begins bonding with the other girls. These groups on Navyformoms have been a great help. You will get her box in a few days and the form letter with her address a few days later. got our first phone call the 2nd Saturday. start writing her an encouraging letter filled with fun stuff.
  • 1Bodyprof

My 91 yr old dad just called and read me the letter he got from my son. My SR told him he wants to carry on the Navy tradition my dad started. I am so proud. It made me cry.
  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

My son followed in my dad's footsteps in the Navy only he's going to be a Nuke on a Sub instead of Electrician on a Ship.  I'm proud of both of them.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

basmom07:  when my son was in boot camp last November, I wrote him every single week day.  I googled for Boot Camp cartoons to cut them out and send with the letters.  Later, he thanked me again and again for those letters.  They are so homesick at BC.  I'm sure the post office appreciated my high volume of stamp usage during that time!

  • Michelle

My son is in BC right now his PIR is 8/15, He will be coming home to Texas after BC because his A school for Hospital Corpsman is in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston . I'm happy that I will be able to visit him on the weekends. He is missing his Tx bbq in BC and his sweet tea. Are there any Mom's here from the Austin area?

  • 1Bodyprof

@ Michelle: We are in new Braunfels. We actually met a large group of corpsmen a few days before our SR left for boot camp. They were floating on the river. LOTS of testosterone among the boys and girls. You are so lucky he will be close. ours is going to Pensacola
  • Bandit1998

My grandson's HS graduating class had 5 members join the Navy.  My grandson was the last one to go to boot camp (he graduated (PIR 6/20/14) and his best friend graduated earlier this year.  His best friend is at San Antonio as a Hospital Corpsman also.  We live on the Gulf Coast so he is not too far from home either.  You are real close by if you live in the Austin area.

  • Jande0621

My daughter just finished boot camp and left for San Diego this morning. We are on our way back to Texas now! We live just northwest of San Antonio.
  • 1Bodyprof

@Jande0621: Congrats! Any tips for PIRs coming up?
