Hi there Texas Moms! My son's newest Naval Air Station will be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area (October) and I'm just wondering if you could share your suggestions or thoughts about where to live there? He'll have ten days to find an apartment, and even though Mama Navy sent him a "welcome Packet", I'd appreciate your advice about neighborhoods, best commutes, apartment-hunting in that area? Good restaurants? Weather? He's a First Class Petty Officer & Instructor and is the radar guy on fixed-wing aircraft. He's been all over the world on deployments, he's single and recently re-enlisted! I'm sure he'll do fine in his search, but any suggestions would be so appreciated. (I'm the moderator of the 'Aircrew Group' here at NavyforMoms)
Thank you in advance - Blessings to all your Sailors near and far.

@storymom... I sent you a friend request as I live in Fort Worth and may be available to help ya
  • tsufish

I also live in Ft Worth! Would love to help any way I can.
  • 1Bodyprof

Need to be more specific about where base is cause DFW is a big area
  • Kamsmom11

Well the base is in Fort Worth Texas so I'm sure he will be in the west part of Fort Worth .. Right?
  • Storymom

Hi again...yes-- it's confusing to us too.  He keeps saying "Dallas" but yet online, I see the "joint base" is in Fort Worth....so maybe we're just using the wrong labels? He'll probably start at the Navy Lodge, which appears to be in Fort Worth.  You are all so nice !

  • harpist mom

Hi Storymom, I live in Dallas, and I am not aware of a base near here. I believe it is in Fort Worth. I recommend that your son seek housing in Fort Worth or areas around Ft. Worth. Dallas is not the best option for him if he works in west Fort Worth because the traffic is terrible in the DFW area. Live as close to your work as possible, my motto.

  • tsufish

The Joint Base is in west Ft Worth. Does he have schooled children? There many places here could live depending on what he wants to spend. The major issue with different places would be the schools if his has kids.

  • JediGrey

I live north of the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport, and am unfamiliar with housing down by the joint reserve base. But I can tell you that the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base is on the west side of Fort Worth just south of Lake Worth, right near Lockheed Martin. I think people are just more familiar with Dallas, probably because of the old tv show and the Cowboys, so they just say "Dallas". Same metroplex. But yes, he'll want to live on the West side of Fort Worth. He could start researching complexes near Lockheed. Fort Worth is a great town, btw. Lot's to do.
  • JediGrey

I checked with my nephew who lives near the joint reserve base. He recommended looking near the intersection of Bryant and Irvan, and Hulen between I20 and I30, and West 7th downtown, and University (TCU girls). His words, not mine! He said lots of new guys live there. Good places to eat. Plenty of apartments to choose from. The area of Fossil Creek is okay he says, but traffic was terrible.
  • Storymom

oh gosh, these are such great suggestions!  Thanks! Tsu: he's single, 28, no kids, and always looks forward to meeting the ladies!  :-)

  • JediGrey

Sorry, that should be Bryant Irven, I-20, I-30, and Hulen. The 4 roads will form a square. Have him look in that area. Or in the area of West 7th downtown, or on University which is near Texas Christian University.
  • Storymom

( now I'm googling TCU !??)  must be the University?  let's see, T E X A S   ...something University?   You ladies are Great!

  • tsufish

I have lots of "nieces" in that age group. Definitely need to introduce him to Ft Worth! Contact me when he gets here and I will Definitely give him the grand tour.

  • tsufish

Texas Chritian University. I would stick to White Settlement or the area Ridgmar Mall. Close to base and then easy access to the rest of the city.

  • JediGrey

I guess I could say my nephew is the same age group as your CPO, single, working in quite possibly the same approximate area. Also looking for those single college girls or female engineers that are everywhere in that area. Lol.
  • JediGrey

He is in for quite the culture shock with young Texas Women. Manicured nails, high heels, and pick up trucks. They can ride, shoot, hunt, fish and look absolutely stunning at the military ball!
  • harpist mom

I had to chuckle, JediGrey. I have a 25-year-old native Texan daughter and some of your description is accurate; however, she does not hunt, fish, or shoot. Storymom, Fort Worth is a wonderful town with lots of fun things to do. Your son will love it!

  • JediGrey

Harpist Mom (Shhh! Don't let them doubt the legend!) Actually, mine do have the nails, heels, trucks. One rides, another shoots, but only paper targets. The thought of hunting brings them to tears. For the matter, an armadillo run over in the road brings them to tears.
  • Storymom

Thankyou for all the great advice! Appreciate your help --I'll let you know what happens! ❤

  • Kamsmom11

Hi Garry'smom... I'm in Fort Worth Texas. My SR went to BC August 26.

Howdy Texas Moms, We are 8 days from PIR and waiting on our "I'm a Sailor" call.  I am on pins and needles. I even tried to move my hair color appointment so I wouldn't be under the sink or tin foil when he calls.....Now THAT's anxiety!!!

  • Texasmom

Congrats TexasBird, to being so close to completion!!
  • 1Bodyprof

TexasBird(Robin): I was in the middle of giving a massage when I got mine! Luckily she is a good friend and I warned her before we started. Talked with my Sailor for 15 minutes before I hung up.
  • Melinda I ride out

1Bodyprof, I am a massage therapist too!! Small world, my sailor's PIR is 10/23 and several times I have kept my phone in my therapy room. My clients are so understanding. They ask all the time how he is doing and several ask me to share the letters. I am blessed to have had some for over 20 years, they are like extended family.

Potterhead's - LOL, I'm so sorry, when I first saw your name, all I saw was pothead's mom.  Welcome!  I started this journey about two years ago exactly with my son.  Boot camp was the worst with limited contact.  It gets easier after that (for the mom's).  I'm in the DFW area.

  • potterhead'smom

That's too funny KimberlyDi Far Away Nuke.  I hadn't thought about that possibility.  Thanks for the welcome & encouragement.  This site has already made it easier.

  • Pam(Tyler's mom)

Good morning ladies!  We're enjoying some great weather in the Houston area!  I'd like to get together with moms/aunts/cousins etc in the SW Houston/Sugar Land/Katy/Pearland area or anyone who feels like coming.  Maybe a Saturday would be best with schedules sometime before the holidays.  We can decide a location central to everyone that want's to join.  Would love to catch up with our moms that meet at Chuy's and meet more moms.

  • Nana51

Pam, count the Falcon women in. We are ready, just let us know when and where.

Melinda I ride out: I'm in New Braunfels. How 'bout you?
  • Storymom

Hello again Ladies! Remember me? My Navy son finally landed in Dallas, and he's been looking for apartments around Uptown, The Village, Oak lawn & Addison. He's not generally the bar-scene/nightclub kind of guy, he likes fresh air, working out, fitness clubs, running, hiking, concerts, swimming-active stuff. Also, his squadron is not at Fort Worth, his "office" is actually in Dallas. Where else would you suggest near Dallas for a single guy? Some of you mentioned the university or college areas, is that Dallas or Fortworth? What is The colony? I also see: Coppell Carrollton, farmers Branch & Irving on the map. Also...He really enjoyed your Aquarium and Museum of Science & Nature too! Thank you for any tips you could offer!

  • harpist mom

Hi Storymom, Where is his office located? Traffic can be horrible in the Dallas area so I recommend that he finds an apartment close to his office, if possible. The younger people live in Uptown and the Village. Addison is a good place to look also, lots of restaurants and places to shop. Unless your son works near the areas you mentioned, Irving, Farrmers Branch, Coppell, or Carrollton, i not recommend them for him. They are suburbs on the west side of town. The Colony is a suburb on the northwest side of Dallas, and the traffic is very congested during rush hour on I35, the main route from there to Dallas. Mostly families live in those areas. It sounds like he is looking in the right places. There is a good biking/jogging trail around White Rock Lake, which is northeast of Uptown.  It is very pretty there, near the Dallas Arboretum. The Katy Trail, in Uptown, where a lot of younger people jog, is a popular place. TCU is in Fort Worth.which some ladies have mentioned. SMU is in Dallas: The Village is near it. There are new apartments around Lovers Lane and Greenville Avenue, which is in the sane area as the Village. I hope he enjoys life in Big D!

thankyou harpist Mom!! ! very helpful info....I sent your advice to my son -he appreciates it! ♥

  • Storymom

Update:  my son found a nice, corner apartment (with its own garage) at The Village!  He'd been there a couple of times already touring other spaces, but yesterday, he went back again while on his way to the Arboretum area as Harpist suggested--and saw this larger unit that had just become available! After all his searching around all the different communities & neighborhoods, it's all working out. Thank you kind Texas ladies for all your advice & hints the last couple of weeks -- Wishing all your dear Sailors Safe Travels & Bountiful Blessings - Navy ON! ♥

  • harpist mom

Your son made a wise choice. He will enjoy The Village. It is a great location. Best wishes to him!

  • Storymom

    thankyou Harpist!

  • Berit

My son is getting ready for his first tour, but was telling me the navy does not have a place for him to store his belongings while out at sea?  This does not seem right to me.  Please advise

  • Ruth, Gun's Mom

Berit, when my son deployed, all three times he had to rent a storage unit. Your son is correct.
  • Mary Frances
