Amanda, you have a fun ride ahead. Hard to believe it was four years ago my son was at Newport. He just returned from his first deployment.
  • Paymaster

    Amanda....welcome to our group!
  • Amanda1965

Thank you all for the kind words.  After reading past posts and taking a lot of notes I am still unclear if I can send my son letters it being only 3 days into OCS. I am ok with him there and very proud but you all speak of sending many letters to keep his spirit up. How do I get that information?  How do I find out his class?  Thanks for any info. The prior posts enlightened me a lot.

  • jdianew

Hi Amanda! My son Ethan is currently at OCS in RI.  He reported on February 8.  You can send letters now, actually the sooner the better.  Also, there is a Facebook website you can "like" called Officer Training Command Newport.  They will periodically load pics so hopefully by week 3 or 4 you will be able to spot your son in these.  My son is starting his 4th week and his class pics have not been posted but I am on the watch!!  Just be sure you DO NOT comment on any of the photos..I have been told it's a NO NO!

I'm new to this site.  My DD reports to Pensacola 6/26.  She has to find off-base housing.  Does anyone have any ideas for us?  I'm trying to help her decide what type of housing she should look for and where.  We know she may have to move 2-4 times, depending on her ultimate platform.  No leases without a military clause.  But, should we look for an apt alone, look for a roomate situation, a mother-in-law apt...???  Any other tips any of you may have will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

  • helenp

My DA reported to Pensacola as an aviator on 10/1/2014. He recently began Basic Flight Training at Whiting Air Field in Milton. He was lucky enough to start at the same time as his roommate from college/NROTC, so they got an apartment together in Pensacola and again in Milton along with a new friend they met down there. Since he went through it so recently, I asked his advice. He asks if she's  SNA (Student Naval Aviator) or SNFO (Student naval Flight Officer)?

  • randy04

    Thanks, HelenP,  She's a SNA

  • helenp

My DS says Country Wood and Angel Cove are the most military friendly. Both of those places let you break lease to go to Whiting.

He saysroommates can be found here:
  • ulua

Hi randy04- my DS lived at Austinwood apts for his training at Pensacola.  its right next to countrywood on Blue Angel parkway.  His apt was nice, just request to be away from the parkway, traffic noise can get loud.  its very convenient, close to the target and walmart, just outside the back gate.  Perdido beach isn't too far, he enjoyed running there.  my DS was only there for 5 months and then moved to Corpus. No problem breaking the lease.  He was happy living alone for this stretch, though others had great experience having roomates.  Welcome!

  • pbmcdaniel

My DS lives at Angel Cove (formerly Austinwood) which is located at the back gate of base across from Country Wood.  He lives alone and has enjoyed it....can be with folks when he wants or have his space when he wants....think it depends on personality. I think there are 7 mo, 12 mo, or 18 mo. leases available, and there is a military clause.

  • Hurricane

    Randy04-
If your DD is going to be a SNA checking in then out the back gate is good because they will only be there for a short period at NAS Pensacola and they have to muster daily while waiting to class up for API. She would need to make sure she is at least 35 miles or more away from NAS Whiting in case she gets follow on orders to there as that is the rule to use the military clause to break your lease if you go from NAS Pensacola to NAS Whiting. Back gate area is good for being able to break the lease with the military clause, the clause requires 30 days notice with any lease breaking. Sometimes commands have to write letters as the orders may not come until last minute.

If she is going to be a SNFO then out the back gate or even the East side of town is nice(closer to night life). Peridido is where a lot of SNFOs lived when we were there but that still is a trek to base or the downtown night life.

Stay away from any lettered or numbered streets, these locations are considered "ghetto" in Pensacola. The front gate has a few nice places on the water but caution living out the front gate area. It's a rougher area.

We spent a year in Florida with API then Primary at WF, my job required me to be in the "rough" neighborhoods so I am very familiar with where not to live, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

    Flight Suit Friday!!  Woo Hoo!!

One step closer .... so proud of him.

  • ulua

thank you Nancy W- that might have been me.  my DS will be deploying sometime in May and I anticipate it will be out to a carrier.  I appreciate all your tips!

Jn/Jf Mom- Congratulations! I can't recall what flight suit Friday was, but it sounds like everything is moving along for your LO.  Every step is Woo Hoo! worthy!

  • CheriH

Jn/JfMom - very exciting! One of many exciting steps along the way. I loved hearing about all of them. And if your LO doesn't want to explain them, just ask us! I learned so much from these moms along the way.

I think our DS finally has a classup date. 7 months of twiddling his thumbs. I'm crossing my fingers in the hope that it really happens. I'll keep you posted!
  • helenp

My DS had flight suit Friday just before Christmas. He was so happy and excited, except they ran out of leather flight jackets in his size. He's still waiting.

  • HeloMOM2016

    HI all,

I am looking for information on furnished apartments or condos near Milton. My student pilot is heading to Milton from Pensacola later this month. He doesn't want to stay in Pensacola...we took the ride when we were visiting a few weeks ago and it was an hour from his current condo in Pensacola. Valuable study time as he put it...

Any assistance is appreciated...I am new at this

    Thanks Gina

  • jdianew

Okay ladies.....what is flight suit Friday?

  • helenp

Flight Suit Friday - The day during API that the class has earned and get issued their flight suits. I understand that they can only begin to wear them after they pass all the ground school academic exams and get briefed.

  • pbmcdaniel

jdianew: is your DS/DD celebrating flight suit friday this week?  our DS is,so they may be in the same API school.  NFO or pilot?  maybe our paths will cross.

  • HeloMOM2016

    helenp

My son celebrated flight suit Friday last week...pilot so you never know when paths will cross

UNM Sean's mom...thanks for the info. However my son was having difficulty getting anyone to make a decision as they didn't know if they wanted to move again or stay in Pensacola. My son knew he didn't want that drive everyday so he rented an apartment solo. He stated he will miss roommates but wont miss being the "maid" of the group and doing all the cleaning. Poor guy had two bad experiences with living with officers who don't like to clean...LOL

  • J/J Mom

Ok, i need help, please.  DS is finishing API & moving to Corpus Christi.  He's having the Navy move him.  He was told by some other SNAs tonight that the movers "don't pack you stuff for you, they just load it up."   That isn't correct, is it?  The movers will also pack everything, right?

  • Hurricane

If the "Navy" is moving home they will send in one to two packers (he has to schedule this with personal property). He will need to be there and watch them because sometimes there are sketchy people if you don't pay attention. Once it is all packed, the driver will come load it all the next day and take it to Corpus.
  • ulua

Hi there jn/jf Mom. My DS made the move from P-cola to CC almost exactly 3 years ago.  His girlfriend flew down and they enjoyed the roadtrip hauling his stuff in a Uhaul.

At that time, the Navy wasn't moving the SNAs from P-cola to CC.  The Navy did pack and move his household stuff for his move when he left Texas after he received his Wings.

The move to CC isn't too difficult if your DS ends up having to Uhaul it.  My DS ended up living at Sugartree Apts with a view of Oso Bay.  His training time in CC was short, 5 months, before he once again rented a Uhaul and moved to his next apt in Kingsville.  So the SNAs get pretty good at moving during this phase.  Congrats on finishing up API!

  • NFAO

Anyone else headed to NAS Oceana this week-end for squadron family day?  This class will be headed to the boat for CQs in a couple of weeks.

  • Marianne

My DS has done moves both ways. When he left P'Cola, he figured out that the UHaul route actually covered his own driving costs because the navy reimbursed him based on poundage & miles.

For  his Japan deployment, he used  the packers both ways. He had to leave Norfolk before the movers were coming, so a buddy stood in for him during packing. I agree that you want to have someone there.

  • J/J Mom

Thanks everyone about the moving info.  I was a bit worried, but he was told by the moving lady today that they are planning to pack and move him.  Thank goodness, because he hadn't planned to pack anything the movers are taking, and they pick his stuff up tomorrow morning.

  • NFAO

    Thanks Suzie.

Our DS also rented a UHaul for same reason (more $$) from Pensacola to CC, CC to Kingsville and then Kingsville to Virginia Beach.

  • J/J Mom

I know what you all are saying about the UHaul, but his vehicle can't pull a UHaul, so he'd have to get a BIG UHaul that could pull his car, and that would be ridiculous for the small amount of stuff he has  haha

  • ulua

I look back on the moves I helped my DS with and those are some of my favorite memories, time together to laugh and talk...though I wish his apts weren't always on the third floor.  you don't realize how heavy that inexpensive build-it-yourself furniture is until you are hauling it up 3 flights!  Jn/Jf, if you have the opportunity to be his moving buddy, I recommend it!

  • J/J Mom

thanks, i, too, have enjoyed (and disliked haha) various moving times with my kids.  They can be precious.  Missed out on this one, movers packed him this morning & he just hit the road.  However, i may get to help DD when she deploys to Italy later this summer.

It makes me really feel for the military that don't have family to support & assist them with things like this.  God bless them.

  • jdianew

Question Ladies:  My son will be graduating OCS on May 1st. He is supposed to report to PCola on May 8th.  I know nothing is concrete but how long are they usually in PCola?  Also, we were told that is were they are told what they will be flying...if this is true, how long are they there before they are told?  THANKS!

  • ulua

Hi there jdianew!   My DS made fairly quick progress at completing API (Aviation preflight indoctrination) at NAS Pensacola, in 4 months.  Then he moved to Corpus Christ to continue with 'Primary Phase', which he finished in 6 months.  I believe its not until Primary is complete that the SNA receives orders to continue instruction in one of several training syllabuses that include; tactical jet aircraft (tailhook), rotary-wing aircraft (helos), or multi-engine, larger aircraft. So the SNA has to finish API and Primary and that takes approx. one year, more or less.. there can be lots of delays, often due to maintenance.

So happy for you that your DS will be grad OCS soon! That's really a very fun trip.  If you like historical tours, try to see one of the mansions while in Newport.  Congrats

  • J/J Mom

Hi jdianew!  Our SNA just finished API in Pens, he was only there 4 months, and was there 3 weeks before he started any classes, so he went through pretty fast, i guess.  Our Navy nurse had several pilot classmates who reported to Pens in May and were there 6 months waiting to get through API.  It must just really vary.  There can be delays due to maintenance, weather, illness, flunking tests, all kinds of things.

I agree with ulua, I have been told that they won't find out what platform they are ultimately flying until after "Primary" (after Pens) is complete.

Congrats on the impending OCS graduation.  Exciting times!!

  • jdianew

    Thanks so much!

  • HeloMOM2016

I want to thank you for all your support. I don't get to get on much as I am in school for my PhD, work full time and teach part time...not whining trust me.

I just did some on line shopping for my son for his new apartment and if I hear his father or step-father say one more time he is a big boy he can do I am going to K+&* them...anyway when I listen to all my son is doing day in and day out at Whitening NAS I am glad I could help I could help make things easier for him. I broke my her today when he asked for me to send some frames pics down for his apartment so it would look more like home...You know I am going to UPS first thing in the AM and I don't care what it cost!

    Thanks again Gina

  • ulua

good for you ginarn93!  framed photos of home are great.  My DS bought a fake ficus tree that he has hauled from apt to apt- its funny and sweet to see how they create their own homes.  It is nice to be able to send them things like decent cookware and how they appreciate it!  I also bought him a crockpot and sent all my tried and true recipes.  He used it some though I think lived mostly on fast food.

Nancy W- you are such a wonderful writer, I enjoy your posts!

  • J/J Mom

only have a second ... but after reading NancyW's last post, thought i'd share a site our DS gave me ... it explains some of the stuff the SNAs are going through.  I have found it helpful at least.

    http://www.cnatra.navy.mil/training_pilot.htm

Congrats to all, for having children doing this wonderful thing for our USNavy.

  • CheriH

Hello all...it's class'up time again!  The last 7 months have been calm which has been nice:)  DS classes up next week in the RAG and he's stressing already.  His sweet wife called me yesterday to ask for prayer and suggestions on supporting him.  I'm so grateful that she feels comfortable calling me!  So, friends, please pray for them, and the rest of his classmates.  It's time for them to "drink from the firehose" again.  Thanks for the support...don't think I could do this without you!

  • Barb

Hi there--Agreed, CheriH, they've gone from 0-60 and it doesn't look like the pace is going to slow down anytime soon!  Our DS closed on his house in the midst of it all and is now so busy at work that packing just has to wait!  His buddies helped him get all the big stuff over the weekend so he has a foot in two houses right now.  Welcome to all the new Moms...I sometimes can't believe how fast the time has passed!  Happy Spring--our surprise snow from yesterday has melted today!

  • ulua

    Whats RAG stand for?

  • CheriH

Not sure what it stands for, but it is the old term for the FRS; Fleet Replacement Squadron.  That's where they learn to fly their actual plane/helo.  From what I understand, most of the aviators still call it the RAG.

Barb-hope your DS gets settled quickly.

  • Barb

Right, I think it was the Replacement Air Group or something like that?  But it's FRS now.

Thanks Cheri...my wonderful daughter is on her way to his house for a week of "vacation"...I'm pretty sure she'll get everything whipped into shape for him!

  • ulua

thanks!  I have just heard FRS

  • Paymaster

RAG stands for Replacement Air Group

  • CheriH

    Thanks Paymaster!

Please tell me about experiences with airsickness. My DS is in Basic Flight Training at Whiting in Milton. He said airsickness is common and the Navy is good at helping people to overcome it. He had his first two flights this week and got airsick in both. So he is grounded until he sees the doctor for airsick medication. He says the next step would be the "spin & puke."

  • J/J Mom

helenp -- i don't personally know any answers for you, but it made me curious, so i typed "airsick" into the search box above & some good discussions came up.  Spin & puke sounds awful, except that it apparently does it's job & helps future pilots become pilots!!

  • helenp

Thank you Jn/Jf Mom. Great idea to search.  One Mom said her DS was helped by ginger. Makes sense. We always use ginger ale for upset stomachs.Yes, they apparently have a very high success rate with the spin & puke. Sounds wretched to me. (pun intended)

  • CheriH

helenp - the Navy is good at helping them get over it.  My DS has had some airsickness with each new airframe.  (Each new frame they go faster, do more spins and rolls, etc).  He used the ginger, did the exercises and just got over it.  They all have to do the spin and puke; I think that was between primary and advanced?  I wouldn't worry about it...I'm sure that a few pilots can't get past it, but most likely your DS will.
