Helen, so glad your hubby's surgeon was good at hide and seek! Wishing him a speedy recovery.
I agree with you about the newspaper articles. I brought the same thing up a few posts ago. The media makes me crazy.
Hope to see a picture of your deployment bracelet. Very creative of you.
  • ProudGMBarb

Karla...Congratulations on the arrival of your new Grandson.
  • ProudGMBarb

Want to share this with you all. Very important info regarding pics taken with cell or smart phones that are posted online...they talk about the safety of our children and grandchildren, but this could apply to the entire military as well.

Barb, thank you for posting that video. I have been aware that my Iphone has built in GPS in it. I never post from my Iphone to my PC ever!! I heard about there being a code where anyone who has a GPS can figure out where you are. (if you post you photos)

My son said that he is going to turn off his Iphone while over-seas.

My Sailor has finished ATT!!! !!!  Gets his certificate tomorrow.  Hallelujah!  PIR was 4/29. Lets see how long till A school starts.

I contacted  headquarters for the movie theatre at Gurney to send R. a gift card.  The lady explained that ordering on line would be easier. I chose the cheapest shipping rate which was US mail.  I get an email from The lady telling me that she upgraded the shipping to next day FedEx.  Her way of thanking R for his service and he would have it for this weekend.  Well, they attempted delivery three days.  I called FedEx to find out what was going on.  Of course it has to be signed for and the delivery guy could not get in the building. They suggested R. come to the FedEx office in Great Lakes to get it.  I said yeah right.  Take a taxi with a liberty buddy to the FedEx office during THEIR business hours! So they returned the card to the nice lady and she is going to send it out to him  again via priority mail.  Sounds cazy.  Telling you all this so you know how FedEx works on the base.  I would never send anything any other way except US mail anyway.  Job security.  Hubby is a postmaster.

  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

YAy for your son finishing ATT R'sproud mom. My son PIR'd one week ahead of yours. They competed ATT a week early, and he started A school last Monday - hope your son has a short hold also. I was so happy our wait was brief.
  • ProudGMBarb

R'sproudmom...Congrats to your sailor! Got my fingers crossed for ya that he starts A school soon!

Just too funny about the FedEX deal. I'm with you...ship US Mail!

  • Sandy's_sailor son

    R'sproudmom, Congratulations to your Sailor.

Odi, I am glad your Sailor was not put on hold for long and started (A)school right away.

  • jacqueline-rn

I have a question.  Do AECFs go through the extra security checks that the Nuke people do?  Should my son go to boot camp with names and addresses?  If so, who should they be?  All this is assuming that I don't deliberately with hold the info so I get an extra phone call.  No, I would never do that.  At least I don't think I would.  Of course it's only July and my son doesn't leave for bootcamp until November.  Hmmm.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

jacqueline, your son's recruiter should handle all of the paperwork for your son. He/she will tell your son what he needs for security purposes.

My son's Dad is from Great Britain. We have lots of family in the United Kingdom and Australia. For security reason my son had to provide the recruiter with all of his aunts and uncles names. (and grandma's)  This is because our relatives on my husbands side of the family are not American Citizens. If your relative are all US citizens then you won't have to provide their names.

Have your son talk to his recruiter about this. You can call up your son's recruiter and ask questions. They will be happy to answer them for you. Although they can't give you legal advice.

Just make sure that you don't leave out any important medical information. I have heard of several SR being Separated from the Navy for not disclosing medical information. Discuss this with your son's recruiter.

  • ProudGMBarb

Jacqueline...Like Sandy already said, your son's recruiter should handle all necessary paperwork. Your son should have received it all soon after he signed up. When he leaves for bootcamp, he won't be taking anything with him except the clothes on his back and a piece of paper they give him.

And yes, disclose anything and everything that might come back and bite him in the you know what. Even financial / credit issues. Our sailor was a victim of identify theft (long story) so we had to show police reports and everything to prove he was not responsible for the alleged debt in his name.

  • R'sproudmom

R sent me a picture by text, of his certificate.  I know it's just a piece of paper, but boy did it make me smile.  Just the fact that he sent it lets me know that he was thinking of me.  Good feeling.  Have a blessed weekend everyone!
  • ProudGMBarb

R'sproudmom....awwww...how sweet of him. I know what you mean...any kind of contact is cherished. I can just see you now...probably have it pinned to your chest so you can touch it all day long! Or put it on the frig...just like we used to do when they were kids!!!  Enjoy it!
  • ProudGMBarb

Helen... We're all here for you...sending big ((((((Navy Hugs)))))) your way. Wishing Matt and all his shipmates the best. May they all stay safe, while enjoying their deployment and experience a new adventure.

  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

Thank you ladies. The support here helps - to know that other Moms feel the same way as I do. Hugs to Helen
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Sorry all, so much going on and I have been so out of touch as we are babysitting our sweet granddaughter this week. She is 7 months oldcand we are enchanted with her.

Super hugs to my friend Helen as you experience your first deployment. He is in the Navy now!! How s hubby doing?

Karla, that is the best hews about daddy being their the birth of his son...congrats to all!

Debbie, so happy you got a all, I am in nned of one. I missed Nicks last all and stll waiting!

There are different clearances for security for the AECF sailors, even in the FC or E T rate. Some jobs require secret clearance and some top secret clearances.

Congrats r mom, we cannot always be there for their milestones but technology sure allows for some good sharing.

Hope all is well with everyone!
  • kathyjeanba (ship 6/Div 929)

    Helen,

    How's your husband doing?

I don't yet know what if feels like to have our sailor on deployment but my thoughts are with you.

  • jacqueline-rn

Helen, it's so good that your Nicholas has an opprtunity to attend his arthritis camp.  I have a friend who has nursed at an asthma camp and another who nursed at a diabetis camp.  They could not say enough about the experience for both the kids and themselves.  Having a chronic illness can really mess with a person's body image, self concept, sense of normalcy, the whole nine yards.  It's even harder for kids who are just developing all that.  At these camps these kids are "normal", which, as we know, is all teenagers dream about.  Of course we know that they are better than normal because they have blossomed despite adversity.  And we will tell them that.  Once they hit twenty-five or so.  :-)

  • ProudGMBarb

Helen....Well, you surely have not been leading a boring life! Kidding aside, I'm happy your hubby is on the mend. Been thinking about you wondering how much sleep you've been getting with Matt just leaving. But with so much going on, hopefully when your head hits the pillow, you're off to dreamland.

Take care and keep us posted.

  • Anti M

Just letting everyone know I've been reading and lurking, and keeping you all in my thoughts.
  • Anti M

I've been a combination of busy and dragging... don't feel like posting all the time. Busy getting stuff together for Burning Man at the end of the month.
  • ProudGMBarb

Anti M....have a great time...fill us in when you get back and have time!

We'll try not to get into too much trouble while you are gone, right ladies?!!!

  • Anti M

They aren't allowed to take leave while waiting for orders. While leave is usually approved between the schools, the C school orders must be in hand so the start date for the school is known.  They must be there when the orders come in.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

sciteacher, so glad he has fixed his phone, loL

Congratulations to your son for all his hard work. I hope you get to visit with him during Labor Day weekend.

  • Anti M

Angie, do the schools at Glakes do the out of bounds chits?  P-cola and Goose Creek have been approving them fairly routinely.  Heck, my nephew came home from his boat on an OOB chit.
  • Anti M

Connie, it is usually E-5, or E-4 with over four years of service.
  • ProudGMBarb

Helen...yes, I'd love to and be honored to help send Matt some birthday wishes!

    I'll PM you!

  • Anti M

Connie, I'd have to look up the chart, but it is more than passing the exam and having excellent evals.  There are points for awards and commendations and such.  They even get points for having passed the exam in previous cycles.  The more times they've taken it, the more points they have earned.
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

When your son/daughter is deployed there is nothing like a good photo of them to make your day!

    Thanks for finding him!!!

And you know I'm happy to send my wishes to Matt :-)

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Helen, when should we mail his cards to him to ensure that he gets them on time?
  • ProudGMBarb

Mary...Love love the photo! Great expression on Nick's face.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Mary, that is a great photo of your son. He looks like he just struck gold.
  • R'sproudmom

Awesome picture Mary.  To think that mine could be there some day makes me feel a little.... well, I don't know how I feel.  He did start A school yesterday.  One day on hold. He found out yesterday morning  that classes were starting.

Helen.. a package is ready to be sent out.  I loved putting it together!!

  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Wish we had a "like" button like Facebook here.

Yes, sitting on hold, waiting for orders and then Bamm out to the fleet they go and then there are not enough hours in the day. Many of you may have thought six years was along commitment but it goes by fast - many of us in this group will be hitting the four year mark soon.

I read the blog about the CT sailor from the USS Boxer here and on Facebook, the family is getting a lot of support from many areas but the pain his family is going thru is heartbreaking.

Thanks for all the comments on Nicks photo as your sailors head out to the fleet, you will see how valuable a little glimpse of them can be.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Debbie, I love that poem. I am going to share with my son. I think he will find it funny.

  • ProudGMBarb

Debbie...cute and clever poem! Want to share it with our sailor. Thanks!
  • Mary, Proud Mom of Nick

Very cute poem - I am surprised we have not seen it before.

Hubby tends to get more emails from our son as he kinda oversees his TSP account and other financial stuff for him when he is deployed. All we do is write ...YOUR money in the subject line and he is always quick to reply!!! LOL

    TGIF ladies!
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Connie, Congratulations to your son. Talk about changes, LoL.  Where did that kid go??

Pam, nice to meet you and congratulations to your son too. It is great that he was able to take that much leave time.

  • ProudGMBarb

    Happy Sunday everyone...

Helen...your son is really a sweetie for sending you all those emails. I wish him all the best...safe journeys, safe "boardings"...with a little fun and adventure thrown in!

Connie and Pam...congrats on the upcoming weddings...your families are growing! Glad you came back to share the good news with us Pam. Nice to meet you!

  • ProudGMBarb

Won't be online here the rest of the day. The Arizona Navy Moms are hosting a pot luck get together for Rear Admiral Scott Sanders Deputy Commander, USN Second Fleet and mentor to NOSC Phoenix. He is in town for a couple days and requested to meet us! So we'll be partying from 5 to 8pm today with him! We have 50 people coming. How cool, huh? I'll let you know how it goes and try to get some pics.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Barb, have fun today. Take some photos for sure.
  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

My husband and I would like to fly a navy flag under our USA flag - any ideas on where to find a good one - must be USA made

  • ProudGMBarb

Jean..just some info if you don't already have it...NMCB5 has  a good facebook page with up to date info and pics.

    http://www.facebook.com/NMCB5#!/NMCB5?sk=wall

  • ProudGMBarb

Helen...the pot luck and the entire event was a big success. Marcy Scott deserves a big thank you for organizing the entire thing. Had tons of delicious food, met wonderful Navy Moms & Dads, and Rear Admiral Sanders impressed us all. He even brought his Mom..and she baked cookies!

He graciously answered any questions we had, and had a few stories of his own to tell. A couple pretty funny ones about pirates.

Only have a couple pics, but I keep getting an error message when trying to post. Will have to figure out what's going on.

Here is the Admirals' biography. You can see he's been a pretty busy man:

I've been thinking of all of the families.  This makes it seem that much closer.  Please extend my condolance to your nephew.
  • Vickyrun

Chrissy got orders for the Fleet! Finally! She is home on leave now. Will be reporting to Norfolk, VI next week, on the USS Donald Cook.
  • Vickimed(AECF-ET)

Helen, Please let your nephew know that we have him in our prayers and that we as a nation and especially as a military family mourns with him.
  • Sandy's_sailor son

Helen, I will keep your nephew in my thoughts and prayers.

Everyone!!  I am so happy. My Sailor son is coming home on leave next week. He will be here for 10 days. Can't wait.

  • Sandy's_sailor son

Vickyrun, so happy to hear that your daughter is finally going to her ship. Sailors belong on a ship. That is one of the reason why our kids joined.
