Welcome! FYI, Navy uses "NEC" and rating, not MOS. Some others may be confused by the Army acronym.
Overall, either FC or ET will be at Great Lakes for about a year. There will be hold times waiting to class up, and often they will be on hold waiting for orders. They almost all go to lengthy C schools after, not in Great Lakes. Expect nearly two years of training before they hit the fleet.
Thanks y'all! And sorry about the confusion. Although my dad was in the Navy, my husband was in the Marines so some of those acronyms are ingrained into my brain. Got LOTS to learn with all this... Lol.
We were looking at all his stuff when he got home last night, he's pretty excited, and we figured about a year in Great Lakes (I see lots of trips up north in the near future for me if they are permitted). Where are the C school locations? And does that depend on whether he is FC or ET? So many questions...
The C schools do depend on which rate he is assigned. Et C schools are all over, lots near San Diego, but can be found in places like Ft. Gordon, GA (one of the ones I attended). FCs have fewer choices, depends on which weapons system they are assigned. I know there's a list for FCs buried in the discussions. ETs tend to do communications or radar systems, those are quite varied. FCs do weapons systems. No way to predict where they will end up this early in the process!
LAG, the FC site you have posted is telling me that it is unsafe for my computer to open... is it OK to push through it? or do I need to try something different to see the information on this site?
I was able to access the page with no problem. Thanks LAG. My son is an ET...it seems like there are more FCs. Does anyone know how they get assigned? My son really wanted FC. He is doing great in ATT; 3 more weeks to go. He can't wait to start A school.
Christine Proud- my son is in week 3 of A school for ET. He is having a much easier time with it then ATT. Then he was is MNS for 5 of the 11 weeks but made it through. They have night school- 3:30- 11:30 pm, which was a bit of an adjustment, but he is more of a night owl anyway. He says he isn't staring at a blue screen as much. Hope that answered your question.
The. famous blue screen lol. That's the one! It's not the best method of learning for him. He has a liw 90s average so he is doing ok. Wants to do much better in A school. He did mention he would be moving to the night hours like your sailor.
Thanks so much for sharing. I feel so fortunate to be part of the group! Gid Bless all our sIailors and their moms! Love you gals!!!
I was an ET, is a very versatile rate. Anything from communications systems, to crypto, to radar, to computers, even calibrating test equipment. Sometimes we were called "Everything Techs". I went to a long initial C school, but picked up several more during my nine years. I was secure communications, Top Secret stuff. So was my husband, but he also held NECs for radar. We both were certified 2M techs, micro-miniature repair.
I don't know what the current teaching style at ET A school is like, but when I went through, it was instructor led, with hands on troubleshooting modules. With the advances in electronics, I know the troubleshooting is less detailed than what I did, as we repaired down to the component, and now there is more swapping out boards and modules (which will make more sense to your sailor than to you, possibly).
The two ratings were completely separate when I was an ET; although I took an FC test as part of a pilot program when they looked at combining them. There has always been a rivalry, think about football teams and their fans. Both are important, and AECF in general is looked on as a good education. Not as prestigious as nuke, but nearly so.
A note about some of the military sites, they'll tell you they are unsafe, but that is not so. Just slightly outdated programs which make our personal security programs nervous.
Well, I separated from the Navy in Japan, and became a dependent wife. The government jobs I was eligible for closed to me because they didn't want to hire a dependent. And I may have been discriminated against because I was female, but I can't prove that. I turned to teaching, by the time we returned to the US, my electronic knowledge was a bit out of date. I was offered a job in LA, but did not want to move there. I could have found work in electronics, but chose to pursue education instead. Had I separated in the US, I would have had better career choices. My husband is a retired ET, and his good jobs fell through (one for the South Pole because of a weird health thing, the other to government cuts the DAY he was supposed to begin). He drives a truck now and loves it.'
The thing is, the Navy provides more than just the training in a specific rate. Leadership, organizational skills, critical thinking, decision making, attention to detail, finance, study skills, and much more. The confidence alone is astonishing. Even being a petty officer is worth college credits. So yes, I used my knowledge, even if it was not electronics specific.
MNS - is Mandatory Night Study When they fail the weekly test the first time, they have to go to MNS until the next week or they pass the test on the first try- He failed 5 tests the first try but always scored 92 or better the second time (go figure) This also effects their phase up process, he is still phase one. He was last in his class after others failed out. Now in A school his GPA (so far) is 93.
He said the blue screen reminded him of the ADD test he took in third grade - lol
My son was in PIR 9/19/14 and has been on hold for the past week +. He just found out that he is starting ATT school tomorrow. Yay!!...I think:-) He will be an FC. He has been worried about night school because he isn't a "night owl". Does anyone know anything about how they assign day vs night school?
My sons ATT was during the day- they have that first before A school. His was 11 weeks for ET, I believe FC's is 9. He is now in night school for A school - He said they do night vs day every other year. So he says he will switch back to day school at the first of the year.
He will get used to the night routine- they are allowed to sleep as long as they want (usually)
Interesting...so it is possible that my son will not even get started in A school until next year which would put him on days:-). Considering that he will be 9 weeks in ATT school starting from today...he wouldn't be ready for A school until December which will make it close:-)
Thanks Katie02! I'm wondering why my son doesn't seem to be getting this type of info. While some of the other sailors seem to have quite a bit of info.:-)
BTW...regarding hold time: my son was basically in Indoc for the first week after PIR (9/19/14) and then he was on hold for the first two days this week and had Indoc for ATT school today with actual classes starting tomorrow. During his hold time, he was on cleaning duty:-D (makes a mother of a young man have to smile!)
Lisa, funny that you thought my SR gave me the info ;) He doesn't seem to keep informed, or share the info with us, if he does have it, although he is still in boot, he could write a bit more in his letters home. ;) I got this info from another Mom on N4M's :) So glad this site is here!
Heehee:-). That's where I keep getting my info and I'm usually the one informing my son!! I agree... Thank goodness for all the various navy mom and dad groups!!!!
Thanks for the info on the process after PIR. I agree about the boys cleaning, it makes me laugh when he talks about bathroom duty, or the fact that he now knows how to make a bed, I teased him a lot before be left, that he was finally going to be able to make a bed properly ;)
I'm wondering and hoping if he will bring these new and enhanced cleaning skills home when he visits or if he will leave them at school/work...Either way, it still makes me smile to know that his bed has to be made daily and his bathroom must be spotless!!!:-D
Lisa- I too get most information from here or the Facebook pages. However, I told my sailor about the one week and Christmas and no Thanksgiving and he said they just had a meeting on Tuesday and were told they are required, if at all possible to leave the base for the whole two weeks. I officially Dec 19-Jan 4. They have not said anything about Thanksgiving though. I told him
I guess we will have to wait and see- lol
And the same experience here Katie02- he didn't bring his cleaning skills home. Lol In BC they don't have much time to write so they say what they need to or feel important and that's about it. After boot they can have phones and computers again, it's wonderful!
Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, they have ot off unless they have duty. Friday is usually a day of special liberty. The 300 miles is in effect that weekend unless they take leave. The big decision is whether they will have enough leave (saved or to borrow) to take turkey day AND the stand down. The one week at a time for Christmas/NY is more of a fleet thing.
Thanks for the info on Christmas, that makes me happy! One of the admins over in our PIR group had said that about the week on week off for Holiday Standown. I won't complain about more time with him ;)
Just visited my sailor this past weekend in GL. I gained several new pieces of info that may be helpful to everyone so I'm going to share:-). My sailor was in PIR 9/19/14 so he has a couple of weeks under his belt at TSC.
1: I took him 3 pairs of jeans and several shirts and he was fine on room.
2: He had also asked for a Keurig single cup coffee maker which they are allowed to have and keep out.
3: Also took his computer, monitor, and a Bluetooth speaker for playing music from his phone. All electronics require a special chit to be filled out in order to leave them out on his desk. Until then, they are stored in his closet.
4: He has been issued a nice coat which he had been told that he IS allowed to wear with civilian clothing. He also has been issued gloves.
5: He filled out a chit to get permission for us to be his Liberty Buddies for the weekend and we had no problems visiting at all. Of course he is still phase 1 so we had to have him back on base before 2200 each evening and pick him up each morning around 0600.
6: verified that he is allowed to take two weeks at Christmas although he will go in the hole a bit on his leave days to do so.
7: he is filling out a special chit in hopes of getting liberty on Thanksgiving weekend so that we can spend the weekend with him. I'll keep you updated on this...
8: He is in ATT school and will be moving on to FC A school in GL afterwards. So far, ATT school is going well and he is enjoying his time.
9: Last but not least, his phase 1 includes 30 days as well as completion of a list of duties and a test.
I was an ET, Electronics Technician. I worked on secure voice communications, but could have trained for radar systems, computers, satellite communications systems, even test equipment. I also trained on micro-miniature repair (specialized soldering) and had a C school in advanced electronic engineering. ET is very versatile, we get called "Everything Techs". I went to at least four C schools in my nine years.
FC is Fire Controlman. Not fire as in flames, but as in firing weapons. They work on the weapon control systems and fire missile. All those air strikes right now? Yep, Navy FCs at work. Rather specialized. Their C school determines their system, which determines what type of ship they will be on, and their choice of duty stations.
My sons recitor told my sr he would be an FC. Now understands they could make him an ET. What determines which one they put you in? How can you do to get your prefers choice?
It is purely needs of the Navy, although your SR can express his preference to the classifier in boot camp. AECF can be either rating, it is in the contract.
Hi my SR's PIR is 11/26. His rate will either be ET or FC I believe & will be at GL for A school. Very excited it's almost here! Have a great day everyone :)
My son just graduated PIR 11/14. He is an FC. His rate will depend on what the navy needs and how well he did in boot camp. Our of 745 people there were only 14 who got FC. FC have about 18 months of school A & C
Hi everyone. I haven't been on NFM's for a long long time. I just thought I would drop in say hello and offer encouragement to all new FC and ET Moms.
Can't believe how fast the time has gone by. It's been four years sinse my son graduated from boot camp. Now he is FC2 and in charge of his department. So far he has been on one deployment. While deployed his ship crossed the Equator and he made his King Neptune, LoL.
