AECF - FCs and ETs

For families that have a loved one serving the Navy as an FC or an ET. This is the place to share and learn more about their jobs and schools.

For subs - look for the SECF group.

Thanks, Allison! That was a very helpful reply!

No box yet, is only been a week. Still looking for apartments in chicago.
  • ismenia

Still waiting for the box, I don't know why this has become so important to me. Does anyone know anything about April's graduation? Day?
  • Anti M

    @ ismenia

Are you in the boot camp group too?  It is much more active and will give you more answers about basic and graduation.

I lived on the other side of the hospital from RTC Great Lakes (literally could drive across the street into the parking lot), and my duty driver when I got seperated actually drove me home since it was so close, and it STILL took about two weeks for my box to get home to my husband. It'll come soon. Don't worry. Focus on writing letters so when you get his letter with his address, you have plenty to send him. They've also started allowing recruits in some barracks the privilege to send emails during holiday routine on Sundays. This is only if they are using the iPads in your recruit's division and they are doing well, so I'm not making any promises, but it is a possibility :). We had iPads on Ship 3, but I know those in my PIR group on Ship 2 didn't have them. They're still testing the program.

I also recommend getting in your recruit's PIR group on here when you know his division number and on the bootcamp group like AntiM said. There is also a Facebook group called GLAM (Great Lakes Area Military) Wives. I would recommend that as well, and they will be able to help you learn more about different areas and apartments available in the area.

If you guys aren't following the Navy Times newspaper, check out their plans for A School. They're still working on how the program will work for ET and FC, but if/when it comes out for those rates, it's going to be a real game changer! I think it's a great idea, but I reminded my husband, and I hope you'll remind your sailor's as well, this could have an impact on competition for promotions in the future. It's important for them to stay on top of these changes, so they can remain competitive with incoming sailors in a few years as the content and technology is changing.
  • CherylG

Allison probably a dumb question, where do we find Navy Times so we can follow? Facebook?
  • Anti M

    https://www.navytimes.com/

Allison, the changes certainly seem interesting.  I can see it for some ratings, but for AECF, not so much.  But then, they are always changing something.  I had a module on vacuum tubes...

  • ismenia

thank you, all of this info helps.

  • Ima

Thanks for posting the link. The article was interesting but the comments were even more so!!!

  • Allison

CherylG it's not a dumb question. I buy my copies at that gas station, but I do forget not everyone on here is a spouse that's going on base. The link AntiM posted or just google military times. Both will have the articles for the public to view and share :).
  • Allison

AntiM I know! I'm so curious to see how they will make this work for ET and FC when there's so much content necessary for their job, cutting it down to about 30% to start doesn't seem possible, but I know they ran a pilot for a different program two classes before my husband. They were doing much more digital learning. I see so many benefits, but I also worry about how prepared sailors will be arriving into the fleet. I'm just making sure my husband stays current for now, just in case. If they start doing mobile classrooms and VR training, I don't want him to fall behind the technology and not perform as well as younger sailors that will be on the program from the start.
  • Tinamarie105

Does anyone know if there are there any links to Dahlgren pages, for C school?

  • Anti M

Allison, I was in Great Lakes when they began the idea of putting ET and FC under the same umbrella.  I was taking FC tests during BE/E (which is now ATT).  Any time they implement a change, there is resistance, and mistakes will be made.

In theory, this makes sense.  However, you are correct, the amount of content for AECF is massive, and a lot of it is fundamentals.  ET used to be split into radar and communications, right before I began A school, I missed the old split by weeks.  The first ten weeks were basics, then I had the new curriculum which set me up for either, but went less into depth on specific types of gear.  My husband had the old program, but still went to both types of C schools, and worked on just about anything while I was strictly secure voice and general electronics.  Still, unless it was restricted crypto gear, ETs were expected to be able to fix anything.  I could have used a more in depth antenna course, for sure.  It might make sense for ETs in that way, as we went to a LOT of C schools, online learning could make it possible to pick up new knowledge without sending the sailor TDY to yet another C school.
FCs are far more specialized, so I don't know how to gauge how it will affect the readiness of new sailors.

  • Anti M

@ Tinamarie ... there is not a Dahlgren group on N4M, but the command has a FB page.

Letter is here, graduation April 14th, division 923?
  • Anti M

Welcome Smidgee.  This group is more for those in AECF who have moved on to A school.  While you are totally welcome, be sure you are also in the boot camp group, which is much more active, and will have up to the minute advice and information about RTC and PIR.

  • Momof1

Hi Smidgee. My Son also is at BC. Then attending AECF!! Good to meet you
  • ScoutToNavyMom

My son is in BC. Then to A School in GL for AECF. As I understand-they don't have a rate until partway in to BC, right? I really don't understand-everyone asks "What's his rate?" But is AECF more of a group with rates within?

  • Momof1

I bet our sons know one another!!
  • ScoutToNavyMom

    Is your son's PIR 5/12?

  • Momof1

    Idk. He arrived on 3/28
  • Allison

ScouttoNavyMom he might receive verbal orders that tell him whether he will be et or fc, but nothing is set in stone until the day he gets his travel packet. You are right that AECF is a group rather than a rate. When people used to ask me before we knew, I would simply say "he will be in the aecf program." People who are very familiar with the Navy will know what you are talking about and those who are not will probably just want to know what that is, and you can tell them basically, "it is the advanced computer and electronics field, and while it is still up in the air what he'll specialize in, he will likely work on communication, networking, or weapons systems either operating or repairing these systems as necessary." That doesn't really explain it, as there's so much you can do in both rates, but that it's the simplest answer I could come up with to get people to understand and stop asking until he was further along in school. Once he knows, you'll be able to give more detailed information about what he does for other family and friends.
  • ScoutToNavyMom

Thanks so much Allison! That was what I was thinking, but got confused when other moms know already the specific job of their guys. Your answer helps a lot.

I have another question- My son went in to the DEPS as AECF with the plan to take a math class at the comm. college and switch to nuke. He took the math class, but decided to stay with the AECF. I was under the impression that this field also required the 6 year active duty commitment, like nuke, due to length of schooling. I see on his paperwork that came back with his box that he's signed for 4 active. Is there a chance that they undesignated him?

  • Anti M

The contract is confusing, as it is four years, then he sign a two year extension.  I was an ET, and it confused me!

  • ScoutToNavyMom

Got it. Thank you. I'm planning our trip to his PIR with the thought that his A school is there and we get some weekend time with him. Didn't want to have it all wrong. I think I'm just borrowing worries, haha.
  • Anti M

You'll get the hang of rolling with it.  The Navy is great at teaching both flexibility and hurry up and wait.

Yes, you get the weekend. Yay!

  • Momof1

Is any mom here who's recruit is graduating 5/26/ on ship 6, div166. Staying in GL for A school for AECF????
  • Bandmom

Hello, my son has a PIR date of June 2.  He will be attending AECF at Great Lakes.  I am planning on taking his laptop and cell phone to give him after PIR.  I am a little confused as "the letter" says he cannot have his cell phone while on Liberty.  Since he is staying at Great Lakes, and is in right after PIR, Is he allowed to have those items before we leave on Saturday?

  • Alejandra

@Bandmom my sin had PIR April 7 and I after PIR de go back to get their things and move are transfered to A School you'll get to see him in a couple of hours he'll be in Liberty after that and you can give him his things when you check him back from Liberty, Liberty expires at 10 pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday.
  • ScoutToNavyMom

I think it goes like this-they can't have their stuff right after PIR because they have to go back to the boot camp barracks to check out and move to A School across the street. I think they can then have their stuff after they move to A School when they are no longer going to be in the boot camp area.

  • ScoutToNavyMom

My son will be AECF A School in GL too. His PIR is 5/12.

  • Allison

ScoutToNavyMom is correct. They cannot have their stuff while they are still in "recruit" status. Once they are checked out of their barracks at RTC Great Lakes, they can have their stuff. For most recruits, this means they can receive their stuff at the airport, for your recruit, he'll have to wait until after he's checked in at TSC Great Lakes down the street and released for liberty to retrieve these items from you since once he packs his things, he'll be transferred and begin the inprocessing immediately. It's a 5 minute drive, but they'll have to be put in barracks and have a short meeting. For my husband the process took maybe 3 hours if I remember correctly since he was able to get a late lunch with us. If for whatever reason recruits are put in THU because of medical holds or inability to transfer after graduation, which is rare, they should be able to have their phones once they have transferred to the holding unit at RTC.
  • Allison

The same is true for gifts, civilian clothes, and toiletries. Some RDCs will be a little more relaxed about this, but it is safer to just wait until he comes out for liberty. There is a visitors center at TSC Great Lakes where you can wait to meet him since he won't be able to call. Do not try to drive on TSC though unless you have military/DOD ID, the pass you get for RTC graduation does not also give you access to the main base down the street, so there is a parking lot on the left of the main gate for civilians or taxis to drop off. They should have signs set up to navigate all that.
  • Bandmom

Thanks everyone.  That does clear up a lot of questions.

  • Vickyrun

Happy 8th Navy Anniversary to my sailor! She reenlisted for six more. She must like it. Thank you to all my Navy Mom friends who comfort me in the hard times and rejoice with me in the good times. I guess you all are stuck with me for a few more years.

  • Anti M

Congrats on her reenlistment, Vickyrun.  Now she'll be within the window where the 20 years looks good and doable.  My husband made it to 20, and it was so worth it.  I got to 9, and for various reasons, did not go further.

  • ScoutToNavyMom

My son went in AECF. Now is ET. Says he is on "holds" and hasn't started classes yet. Has done some fire fighting schooling, but doesn't know when he will actually start his "A school". Anyone have experience with this? He also says that there is a sailor who's been there almost a year after finishing A School because there isn't room in the fleet yet. :(

  • MontanaNavyMom

My son leaves for Bootcamp on June 27.    He will then go into AECF and would like to be FC.    Any more info on wait time?

  • barefootie

scouttonavymom when did your son graduate?

  • ScoutToNavyMom

    5/12
  • barefootie

    congratulations

  • barefootie

My son graduates this coming Friday and mentioned a few weeks ago that word is there's a lot of sailors waiting around in AECF school for spots

  • Anti M

Yes, that is completely normal.  It is hard to pin down how long the hold may be.  Just stay supportive, this is a test of patience.  They'll be given some work to do, cleaning mostly, although there are other assignments.  There's enough to do on base, MWR has good programs, and the gym is pretty good.  There is not much they can do in the way of studying, although they can finish their advancement courses.

For ETs, they tend to go directly to a C school, as there are many options.  FCs have fewer C schools, so the wait for those are longer.  Now and then they'll send an FC directly to the fleet without a C school, but a quad zero FC doesn't do a ship much good. It isn't that there is not room in the fleet, there are no seats in the C schools.

  • ScoutToNavyMom

Thank you Anti M  :) That helps.

  • Ima

Anti M, Thanks so much for always giving us great answers and advice!!!

  • Pooter527

What is AECF? Advanced electronics and fire control.
  • ellen0502

Pooter527, It stands for Advanced Electronic Computer Field

  • Pooter527

Ellen0502 thanks for the info. My son is going to school for AE and hopefully fire control.
