I've never heard that one and I don't think I'd do it, unless you get the ok from your sailor or Marine.  I know that pornography is not allowed to be sent there, and I wonder if condoms might also be construed as inappropriate. I have a list of requested items straight from the Lt Cmdr of a Marine company in Afghanistan, and neither was on the list :)
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

This was the list of requests from him:

"**Copenhagen Snuff (it's like gold downrange)
    DVD movies/TV Series
    Battery powered electric travel razors
Mr. Coffee type coffee makers (their vehicles have AC power)
    Hot water heaters (electric)
    Ramen Noodles
    **Redbull (more gold)
    Nuts (pistachios/peanuts/sunflower seeds)
    Single serving Propel drink mixes
    Magazines
    **Cigarettes (Marlboros and Camels)
    Vacuum sealed tuna packets
Hot chocolate mix/Tea bags/ instant coffee packets (Coffee Singles- teabag
    type)
    Baby wipes
    Beef Jerky/Summer Sausages

and of course....cards, letters and prayers........."

  • Much Trouble

I heard a story about a guy who accidentally got a care package (from a group) that was meant for a female, and included tampons.  Later, he was shot and they couldn't stop the bleeding until someone had the bright idea of using one of the tampons.  Sounded weird, so I checked of Snopes, and they said they couldn't prove or disprove that story, but medics have used tampons for deep wounds for a long time.  They also went on to mention condoms to cover the gun barrels and keep the sand out.  However...WARN your son before sending them!  LOL  If mine had opened a package from me containing those items, (especially in front of his buddies) he would have never spoken to me again!  (I'm not sure what size condom a gun barrel requires, but maybe you could ask a few guys.)
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

    um - a Magnum?  Sorry ;)

MT I was thinking the same thing, could be embarrassing. I haven't heard the tampon story on my corpsman mom groups..  Chief88, let us know what you figure out!

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

When my son (Gunner's Mate) was deployed to the desert last year, tampons were on the most wanted list of things needed...plugged wounds...kept sand out of guns...who would'a thought!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

    It's incredible.

Molly's group has this great photo of gals rejoicing over receiving a shipment of 'normal' feminine hygiene projucts - apparently the military's versions isn't too nice so gals appreciate them for their original purpose, too ;)

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Tyler finally got all his care packages, including his computer....Only took 10 1/2 weeks to get to Guam, shipped Priority Mail....Unfortunately his camera was not in the package it was shipped in.....so he'll have to get another one there in Guam...I won't be mailing anything else there..will just give him $$$$ for snacks.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Better the computer than the camera, I imagine.  At least the packages arrived.  Thanks for the update!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Joanne, did you itemize things in detail on the customs form? Not saying one shouldn't, but when sending costly stuff it may be good to generalize a bit.

I just looked at sendcare.com, seems rather pricey vs DIY.

Thanks Carla for the climate reminder! One of my groups has been discussing sending to "the sandbox," remember to include Q-tips & baby wipes for sand/dust.  I have three corpsmen to put boxes together for this weekend, yay Dollar Tree & Walmart, here I come!

    Carla,

i started a discussion on "shopping links"  i've put some things in there including a link to fill in and print online custom forms

  • mommabelle

Carla, I am preparing my first care parckage to my son.  He is on a ship.  I remember seeing a completed custom form somewhere on this group, but I can't find it now.  Can you direct me where to find it?  Thank you.
  • TexasMomof2

Mommabelle, I second what Chief88 said. It is "said" that the forms are "watched" and boxes disappear if it lists anything such as cameras, tobacco, Ipods, etc. It's safe to just list what Chief88 says........
  • TexasMomof2

Oh, and as far as the customs form, you can get it at the post office and they will help you fill it out. Very easy. Short and sweet. When you first look at the form it's a lot more intimidating than what it actually is.........have fun sending packages!
  • mommabelle

Thank you both very much.  This first package doesn't have much in it of any value.  He said he didn't need anything but an international converter for future port visits.  He didn't have one on this last port visit and he had some sort of "key duty" at the hotel, so he was on Skype most of the day and used up his battery.  Luckly someone had on he could borrow.  Other than that, he just asked for food.  I am sure that will change further along into deployment.  He's been gone for 1 month.  I am sure after this first one, we will be good to go from there.  Thanks again.  Take care.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Mommabelle, here's the pic of my sample customs form ~
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

You don't need to fit the "TO" information into the normal boxes (street/city/state/zip), as it obviously doesn't fit the categories except for the "Last Name/First Name" part.

I generalize about items as you can see.

Check "Gift" and "Airmail" at the bottom left.  To the bottom right, under "If non-deliverable," I check "Deliver to chaplain," figuring they'll do their best to get it to the right person, or at least disperse the contents to someone in need.  Of course, that wouldn't be the case if I was mailing a computer - then it would be "return to sender."

You will get a receipt and a copy of the customs form.  Just press hard on your pen, it has to go through several copies!

Enjoy putting your boxes together for your son!

  • mommabelle

Marcy, This is most helpful.  Thank you so much.  Blessings to you and your family!

How cool are these?!?  "Tin Can Treats" - you remove the bottom of a tab-top tin can, empty and clean it, fill it with treats then decorate the can.  Here's the tutorial: Tin Can Treats from ourbestbites.com
  • Linda (Seth's mom)

    a neat and clever idea!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I wonder about getting the bottom lid back on - guess I just have to try it and see how it goes :)

  • Alysia-Redsmom (VQ-4/ATO)

Marcy - those are just too kewl....thanks for sharing!! I know that my sailor son and his buddies will enjoy these tin treats :-)
  • Susan mom to Niko

Those are a great idea!!  Can't wait to send a few!!

Welcome new members! Just a quick reminder about community guidelines here: N4M Community Guidelines
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

One of my corpsman mom friends says her son in Afghanistan is telling her treats are great, but he & his buddies would really like tons of powdered drink mix, "healthy stuff" for staying in shape and those cooling neck wraps in his next care package.
  • TexasMomof2

Yes, I send packages through AnySailor.com and all of the different branches of the military in Afghanistan are badly in need of electrolyte drink powders along with those neck wraps.  It is extremely hot over there.  I even read of one group of Marines who were getting sick due to them only having water.....they're sweating out all their electrolytes.. Protein powders are also good...
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Dollar Tree used to have Powerbar electrolyte powdered mixes but I haven't seen them recently :(
  • TexasMomof2

I'll have to go check out our Dollar Tree.....do you know where I could get the neck wraps?
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

There are different versions but this is the one my corpsman-mom friend has sent her son and he likes it - plus the price is the best I've seen :)  FOX Cooldanna at uscav.com
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

One of our corpsman dads came up with this link for making your own neck coolers and also "head coolers" - beanies that fit inside a helmet.  His mother-in-law's quilting group is going to make these.  Looks pretty easy! How to make cooling neck wraps and head coolers
  • TexasMomof2

That's great info, Marcy, thank you!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Should be interesting! I bought the crystals at Walmart today, will pick up fabric tomorrow.

i want you to know how great i think this site is.  i'm on a carrier site and i've started a discussion called "useful links."  it's where we can post links we thing would be useful to each other and i have found a great resource on this site.

i would like to pass on a link to purchase individual condiment and other great things.  i ordered some propel, texas pete and mrs. dash for my daughter.  there was a slight problem and they handled it on the spot.  and their prices are great.

    thanks!

  • TexasMomof2

Carol, OH MY GOSH!!!  I love this website!  I send packages to many different troops in Afghanistan.  A problem they are having is keeping our young men and women hydrated because it's soooo hot.....some are actually getting sick.  They need electrolytes and this website is perfect.  Thank you!

  • Susan mom to Niko

Those are exactly the right cooler beads... found in the garden section of your home depot or ace hardware...  the idea is that you mix the beads with soil to help water your plants...  about a teaspoon of them will fill a neckerchief cooler... so one package goes a long way... instead of the long ties to knot on I have used velcro tabs...
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Susan, the beads I bought are are so small, I wonder if I bought the right ones - I was expecting the size of BB's for some reason, which these sure are not.  I'm going to experiment with these later on - work keeps getting in the way!  :)
  • Alysia-Redsmom (VQ-4/ATO)

Did anyone else get the group email yesterday about a free dell? I think it may have been a virus; if so DELETE IT!
  • Annette

I got that e-mail yesterday too. I thought it looked like a virus so I deleted.
  • AngiePNMx2

Yes ...those are spammers who come on the site....don't bother with them and report them to the Admin.  I got the same ones.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

The link "Report an issue" is at the bottom right of the page. This is the third incident in recent weeks, hope the trend stops instead of expanding. Extra-bad karma goes to them, small consolation but I'll take it :)
  • Annette

I am getting packages ready, my son loves fruit. Has anyone sent small cans of fruit? worried about the cans breaking open & leaking, I know the packages get tossed around a lot before arriving.
  • Jen - Ship10mom(Div340)

FYI - these spammers have been on some other groups as well.  One person commented that it might not be malicous at all, but a virus or an email acct that was hacked and spread - this could be very true!  Hopefully not intentional, as we all love our N4M site!  :-)  It's good to know we can report to our admins. and get it taken care of though!

Cheif88 - Thanks for bringing up jerky - I'd forgotten about that, and he loves it! :-)

  • Jen - Ship10mom(Div340)

duhhun58 - That is an awesome site - Thank you so much!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I can't find the Powerbar drink mix/single serving boxes of eight I was getting at Big Lots, and amazon.com says they're out of the packs of 96.  If anyone sees them somewhere, let me know, thanks!
  • Annette

Marcy, try www.hydrationdepot.com I didn't see the powerbar drink, but they have a variety  other bulk of mixes. : )
  • Annette

Thanks ladies for the fruit advice  : )

    I double ziplocked them!!!

I sent my son the squeezable fruit in previous packages and didn't put in ziploc, didn't even think about it leaking out. Haven't heard anything from him about it yet.

Oh, the things I have to learn. Crossing my fingers!!!

  • Annette

Thanks Carla, I do have a dehydrator, my husband bought it a couple of years ago  to make jerky. It hasn't got a lot of use!!
