Mine, times are definitely tough. If you can't make it have your son by the DVD much less expensive and worth it. Best of luck. Hope something great happens and you can make it. Best of luck

ohhh I am with you. I cry when she folds wash, I cry when she yells at her sister, I cry when I trip over the cord for her straightening iron........I think I am going to dehydrate before she even leaves for BC in 12 days!

  • FCSN Reed's Mom Div 155 -5-18-12

@Josh'sMomStaci, oh how I know that's what's gonna happen to me :'(  Just knowing this is his last night home is weighing heavy on me...I so planned on having a "family portrait" taken this evening, but what I was banking on (Wal-Mart) is closed today...I procrastinate tooo much, so I am tryin to make other plans...might have to take my own, lol...and @lisinnj, I can relate, my 9 yr old son just told me that he will miss his big brother yelling at him, lol... :(  I am really trying my best to keep it together...but, boy is it hard. I am so very glad that I have joined this amazing group of MoMs, who can relate...I appreciate you all. :)

  • Denise - browns57

If you all haven't yet please also join the group for bootcamp Mom's you will beable to talk to so many others in your shoes.  Once you get the form letter your son or daughter sends you will know their graduation date and ship number & division. Then you can join the group with others who have loved ones in your SR's Division. I belong to many groups on N4M, I am no longer apart of bootcamp moms buI'm in other groups, feel free to add me as a friend.  My son is stationed in San Diego......it gets easier, miss him alot but I have contact right now until he gets deployed in a few months.

  • Denise - browns57

@ Phillies - Did your daughter get hurt in BC or are you adding the 8 weeks for BC with A School she did in Great Lakes? When did she PIR? Just wondering, my son was there 7 months ago?

  • FCSN Reed's Mom Div 155 -5-18-12

@browns57 thank you very much...Im tryin to get in several groups also, but with my M.S. and multiple health problems, Im not able to get on as much as I wish to...and right now, just tryin to get as much out of his last day here...but Im sure I will be more of a regular once he's gone... :'(

Thank you all for your abundant support <3

  • Batmansmom531

My son PIR'd on 12/29/11, and is currently in A school at GL.  Although we speak more often, I still miss him terribly.  I had to clean out his room this week due to my husbands daughter coming to stay with us  and I cried the whole time I cleaned.......he is my oldest son, and very close to me and my husband.

  • NanZam

Josh'sMomStaci I know the feeling...It will be ok...did you try Sears?  You don't need an appointment...Your son will be ok...they happen to be stronger than us Moms...(HUGS)...My son graduated last year from Great Lakes and is now stationed in 29 Palms...I would cry all the time...and once I heard his voice I would be ok...Take Care, and God Bless...

  • Ct JT's Grandma Peg

I now have a Sailor. Division 920.  So proud of my Grandson. Bravo Zulu to Division 920 and the other divisions that have completed Battle Stations.

  • crazyd925

Our son is on ship 09 Div 143. We aren't due for our "3 week call" til next week - I think it's been the longest 1 1/2 weeks of my life! We are so proud of him and all the other sailors and soldiers that are willing to step up and do their part to defend our country and our freedom. God bless all of you.

  • Denise - browns57

Crazyd925 - Remember that no news is good news, When my son was in BC we didn't get a call until week 4, his division had gotten in trouble.  Then when everyone else in the Div seemed to be getting calls, we didn't get one until about  4 or 5 days later.  He had been on watch. It's all up to their RDC

  • peggyproudnavymom

I am in chicago now and we read that the graduatin does not start till 9am but i see people are planning to be there at 630am is that right?  should we get there at 630 am ?  we should be there that early?

  • veteranmom

Yes they have to check every car and identification for anyone entering the base
  • Vickimed(AECF-ET)

pegodun You need to get there as early as possible. There is no reserve seating. When you get in your SR's Div will be marked. You want to try and get a seat in front of where they will be. People will be getting there early and so should you if you want a good seat. It takes time to check in also, That is a long line.If you leave at about 6:30 You will probably be at your seat at about 8ish. Take a Kleenex. You will probably need it. Enjoy the day. It will be one you will never forget.

  • Theresa's Mom *Ship7 Div161*

Hello am also a new navy mom My daughter left on 3/27/12 and is so proud of her, I got that 30second phone call WOW it was so fast she sounded good,So if there anyone with Information on Planes Car Rentals and Hotel I would really appreciate  any help Thank You:)Got her box today felt a little sad:( and any other Mom with kids that left that day also.

  • Leese/K's OS Mom

Theresa's Mom: Hold off on buying your tickets, Many things can happen in RTC

If your going to book this early make sure you buy refundable tickets.

Many recruits get held back for not passing run times or SIQ (sick in quarters) ect..So you want to make sure you can change the date's if need be.

The Navy Lodge was a Great place close to the Base, But you do need a rental car they have no shuttle to the P.I.R.

    We also used Dollar Rental.

As for your flight if you book it at least 3 weeks prior you should get a good deal, the drive up from Chicago was very easy and quick.

I hope this helped you and Good-Luck with your new Recruit, And welcome to the Navy Family!

  • blm

we got our airline tickets from southwest and they are not refundable but you can change your flight without a fee

  • tatertoddsmom11/142

I received a letter from my SR on 3/29/12.  He's been SIQ hope this doesn't delay his 5/12/12 graduation.  He asked if we'd send him no more that 3-4 letters a week.  Wonder what that was about.  Possibly too many might get him extra push ups?

  • Sharon ~ K's Mom

Hi tater, thank your son for his service and thank you too. They won't get extra work outs or punished for mail. Our Sailor received a lot of mail, heck his girlfriend who is now his wife used polka dot stationery and envelopes which earned him the nickname "polka dots." They all made fun of him, he got razzed all the time, but he never let it phase him. He didn't care, he loved getting the mail from her. They are 19 now, as he went through in September 2010.

It could be that he asked you that because he is very busy and doesn't want you to feel bad if he doesn't answer all of them. I told and still tell my son (he is currently deployed), he doesn't have to answer all my E-mails, it is just me chatting with him. He doesn't always have time or can't get on the computers on the ship. So, if he is really busy, he can't write as much as he may want. Remember, they can only write on Sundays. Hope this helps and wishing your son all the best. Hope he isn't held back.
  • ABF mom

Hi all, i'm a new navy mom, my son left for BC on the 28th of March. I'm looking forward to his first mail. Got the form letter already but haven't received 'the box' yet. A bit worried, he put his cellphone in the there. Hesitated to ask him about it in my letters because i don't want him to get worried about it. Hope it will be here soon.

  • nickolasryan

My son Nickolas just left for Great Lakes for his basic training. His recruiter told me about this website and said i should join

  • veteranmom

Nickolasmom you will be so happy you did.  The first week is the hardest for you and I spent every waking hour on this site for the first week after he left. Write him every day so when you get the address he will get a lot of mail. Once you get the address and meet other moms in his division time will fly.  Oh and it's ok to cry every day I don't care what the dads say. Oh and change your username to something anonymous before you get "spanked". (lol just kiddin ftlw )
  • Pearl Harbor MA

Prayers for my sailor son please. He fell and dislocated his knee again! On crutches and in knee brace, has to have an MRI done, possible ACL tear...do they ever really grow up? :)

  • HuntersMom

Hi Everyone! New to this site and would love to hear of anyones news!!

  • Kathy-Paige's mom

    A big welcome hunters mom!!
  • nickolasryan

Thank you so much for the comments it really means alot to me

  • nickolasryan

Hello everyone i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how do you know for sure when your child will leave after basic? My paper work said maybe the day after graduation but how do you plan for your reservations and such. Help me if you can thank you so very much

  • GoatLady (USS Theodore Roosvelt)

You don't know until the day of graduation what your sailor's plans are so there is really no way to plan.  The hotels are use to this.  We made our reservations through Saturday night just in case.  Our son left Saturday afternoon.  He/she usually finds out the day of graduation.    We checked out Saturday morning and the hotel was OK with that - no extra fees or anything - no problem.

  • Maria ( 9/132 - HM- 04-2011)

Nickolasryan, planning your Tavel is not easy. They should leave Saturday early morning, that is what has happen for the last year. Reality is that your SR will get travel orders just a few days before. When our son PIR we left for GL on Thursday and he did not know until the last minus when he was leaving. Welcome to the Navy, as everyone has told me hurry up and wait. Enjoy PIR it is awesome.
  • claudia

dear nicolasryan, there is absolutly no guarentees from this moment on...we have had to clear our schedules in days not hour blocks things change at a moments notice even liberty...my son got a weekend off we picked him up drove 2 hours home someone messed up on their time off and instead of all the wonderful plans to spend time with our son we had to take him straight back to his ship...so our time and i thank God for every second was spent in the car...im off to fleet week so excited but i know i will take what i can get...

  • nickolasryan

Thank You all very much it is hard not knowing but i guess i will just wing it haha. All your input really helps me

  • SailorKurtsMom (Ship 7 Div 124)

Nickolasryan mom - our son just had PIR 4/20 - we stayed at Courtyard by Marriott on Northpoint in Gurnee.  It was really close to RTC, and a comfortable place to stay and hang out with our Sailor!  We also discovered later in the day that we would leave the hotel and head closer to the Midway Airport where he was flying out from on Saturday.  We were able to cancel the reservation for Friday night - with a refund!!!!!  Amazing service they provide!  Courtyard was EXCELLENT - rooms were awesome, too!!!  Our Sailor, since they were at the airport ALL day - until 5:00 PM was allowed to leave the airport and hang with us most of the day - we took in a Cubs game!!!  It was AWESOME - and he was so excited!!!!  So, I agree with all the other moms - there is nothing for sure - things can change at a moments notice!!!   It also depends on where your Sailor will be going for A-School!!!  Good Luck - - - and God Bless All!!!  PIR is TRULY Amazing - - Enjoy EVERY second!!!!

  • OldSarge

Welcome Navy Moms, Dads, Family, and Friends:

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is John Spadaro (Aka Sarge). I proudly served our country for over twenty years of active duty and retired as a Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army.  I have lived in the Great Lakes Area for over 30 years. Some of you may ask, why did a kid from Brooklyn New York retire in Gurnee?  Well there is a simple answer. My wife of 38 years and I fell in love with this area when I was Stationed at Great Lakes/Fort Sheridan. We have seen this area change over the years for the better. We have one nephew currently on active duty with the Navy and, one nephew currently on active duty with the Army. I support our troops and family members the best I can. Every year I am involved with the Adopt a Sailor program. See the photos on face book. My face book can be found by searching for taxisarge@gmail.com  I also host a FREE Navy Moms & Dads Meet and Greet every Thursday before the P.I.R. On occasion I host one on a Wednesday when graduation is on a Thursday such as during the Christmas/New Year’s holidays.  The Meet and Greet is free for all who are attending the Graduation. The meet and Greet starts at 5:30 PM and normally ends at 9:00 PM. It is more than an informal gathering. I show a short video and answer questions about the area; I also give you excellent information regarding the graduation that you won’t find anywhere else.  Also I provide excellent buffet style food at my expense. The Sundance Saloon provides me the space for free.  Beverages are the only thing you have to pay out of pocket. Here are some of the questions that many parents call me or email me about. If your question is NOT found here, please feel free to call me at 847-212-0246.

Question: Sarge, what is the best hotel to stay at and why? Answer: I highly recommend the Marriott Spring Hill Suites in Waukegan, or any of the other Marriott’s in the Area of Waukegan or Gurnee. The Spring Hill Suites is a modern hotel and is located in the Fountain Square shopping Plaza. It is only steps from the Sundance saloon where I host the Meet and Greet, and you can walk to restaurants, Wal-Mart, Denny’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotles, Chili’s, and Sweet Tomatoes’ and other businesses. Always check reviews before booking your hotel!

Question: How do I get from the airport to my Hotel? Answer: Be very careful – City Taxi fares from O’Hare to the suburbs will cost approximate $96.00 From Midway or Milwaukee, it cost $160.00.  If you think I am exaggerating, read the Navy for Moms horror stories.  However, there is a solution. I own my own Taxi service and have seven drivers on my team. Our rates from O’Hare are only $54.00 for the cab, not per person, to any hotel in North Chicago, Waukegan, or Gurnee. From Midway or Milwaukee it is only $85.00 per cab. If you search on Navy for Moms for “Sarge” you will see many positive comments about me and my drivers.  As an added bonus, anyone who hires us from the airport to their hotel, I provide a free ride to the P.I.R. on Friday morning.

Question: What does my sailor need and should I bring their cell phones and laptops.  Answer: You sailor needs only your love and support. They can have their phones/laptops after graduation if they are staying at Great Lakes for their A-school. If they are departing the next day after graduation for their A-school, which is not at Great Lakes, you can give them their phones/laptops at the Airport. I will explain this at the Meet and Greet.  Questions - call me at 847-212-0246

  • proudnavymom8

Is there any other way to get the information regarding the graduation?  Unfortunately, I can't take both Thursday and Friday off so I will be heading to IL right after work on Thursday and won't get there until 11pm -12am.  I would love to get this graduation information even though I cannot attend the Meet and Greet.

Morning everyone, I was wondering if anyone can answer my question. I just got my first letter yesterday so very happy actually I got 2 whoohoo. My problem is i got the papers for graduation and the address to write to Nick but now on his letter it is a different address what do i do? Where do I send his letters? Help me please thank you.

  • nickolasryan

Thanks Kathy i did call the recruiter and he said either one was fine that Nick would get it. And great news I got my first phone call on Saturday it was soooooooooooo GREAT to hear his voice, we talked for about 25 minutes and we both cried when it had to end i miss him so much :( I can't wait to see him at graduation in June

  • nickolasryan

I just want to tell you Kathy i am glad i found you on here. You have been a big help to me thank you so much and god bless your son :)

  • Marcy

Nikolasryan, great you got a call. I remember that first call too. My son has been in for 5 yrs and I still don't know if I understand everything there is about the Navy, LOL. There is always something new and exciting. Good luck to you and your son. PIR is so exciting and I am excited for you. I would love to go back but I dont' have anyone else going for now.

No matter how long they are in it is always an emotional roller coaster. My son has been in for 5 yrs and I still cry everytime i send him off at the airport. I know he thinks I am crazy but he never says anything, LOL. Mine is in Hawaii and I also have one in the Airforce and he is in Japan. My Airforce boy  I have not seen over year this past Christmas. I am ready to see  him BIG TIME. I am hoping he will be able to meet us in Hawaii when go in July. Let's cross our fingers. Plus my sailor may or may not be there when we get there too. I guess that is a chance you take when they are on ships as well.

Well good luck to all of your sailors and you too.

  • nickolasryan

Thank you so much ladies and I am glad you know and understand how i feel. It is hard on a mom when they leave more then anyone will ever know. I am very excited about graduation can't wait. Best of wishes to you and your boy's for they never get to old when it comes to being a Mom.

  • mareluc(Ship11/Div196/PIR 6/29)

nickolasryan - you are 100% correct - about it being hard on us moms when they leave - no one other than us can understand that.  I get so upset when someone tells you - you will be ok it is just like they go away for college.....NOT.  It is totally different.  Glad we have each other!!!!

  • myboysmom(Ship09/Div078)

    Hi ladies,

I haven't been on this page in a while...glad to see all are doing ok. Nickolasryan good luck to you and your son. You both will be just fine...some days are harder than others and NO ONE understands unless you have been through it yourself. My son is in D.C. now he was chosen in b/c for Ceremonial Honor Guard. He has been in the Navy now for almost a year and a half but it still isn't easy to let him go when it's time to put him back on the plane. But, we have a deal that I can't cry in front of him (he says "Navy Rules") haha his rules of course...but that's ok I just agree with him and bite my tongue and then when he gets on the plane the water works begin.....haha

PIR is a wonderful day...but be patient with him b/c he will be so uneasy being away from the base after bootcamp.(if he is able to leave and spend time with you) My son was so nervous the first time he left the base he could hardly stand it.

Good luck to you and we are all here if you need to cry, rant, rave, brag or just ask questions. Everyone was here for me when it was my turn and I am more than happy to listen to you new Navy moms now....and I will do all I can to help you through this rough transition. My prayers are with you and your son.

  • Marcy

Yes I wish this site would have been here when my sailor went in. It didn't start until the next year. I have been greatful for N4M's since then. My nephew is also in the Navy now too. He is in A school in Pensacola. I am so proud of all of kids and yours as well.

  • nickolasryan

I got another letter today i get so happy and sad all at the same time. My son's dad gets a little upset when he finds out how long my letters are compared to his lol. I just tell him ya well he is a mama's boy and that's just fine by me. I just want you ladies all to know that you are the best i tell ya, not sure what i would do without all of you. Thank You all from the bottom of my heart. God Bless all of you and all your children men/woman

  • rsv227-Devin's Mom

Hope everyone had a great Mother's Day!  Does anyone know if the Air Force has any type of site like this?  My girlfriends son is joining the  Air Force after graduation & I told her how much help "Navy For Moms" was for me.
