Kathy, That is what I am wondering. Even if able to fly out on a delayed flight, will our sailors be available to visit anyway. And do not want to stress my son if he needs to focus on job and then worry about me being there. My heart just sinks for Sue as it is a definite on her flight being cancelled. I read that through the 15th, I believe, fee waiver for change of flights and also refunds for cancellations. That would make you think anticipating through that date until flights back on regular basis.
So glad to hear that everyone's loved ones are safe and so sad to hear about trips to see your children having to be cancelled. That was the first thing I thought of when the quake hit was how many of you moms would miss your trip to see your kids. My heart is with you. I was actually chatting on Facebook last night when the aftershocks started hitting. Zach said it was crazy for a while, but everyone seemed to make it through with no real problems. I was so grateful he was online and I didn't have to wait to hear something about his safety. Love goes out to the people of Japan, such devistation. They will surely all need our prayers and support. Thanks to all you other moms for the updates on your children.
Navy Ma, my G'daughter said many on leave to the US were stranded because of snow storms. She said the biggest thing is to call the unit and tell them what is happening.
Well ladies, my flight is still on go, so I will leave tomorrow. My concern is the nuclear power plants status. I hope I have myself together, have tried to cover my bases. Sue, I have Patrick's number, will try and meet him. Kathy and Dori, I hope we can all meet up somewhere. Sue, I wish I could take you with me. I am excited but somber at the same time about going. Ladies, wish me luck and say a prayer!
Will try my best to correspond - going to bed - as far as know flight still on, will check in morn. Thanks for all the support. You ladies are the best!!
It is disappointing but necessary. Now to deal with the air lines and/or insurance company. My problem is that, unlike Sue, the flight has not been canceled ... yet. But there are some things to pull out of the hat yet. For example, because I have to have CT scans done ... too frequently ... getting the doctor to order me not to go because of potential of radiation exposure. The Navy just ordered the sailors at Atsugi to stay inside because of potential radiation exposure. This was posted on FB by both my g'daughter and her BF and they are in two different locations.
I wonder of the CO of Atsugi/Yokosuka would provide letters like they do when there is a change of port of call. I think I will e-mail the Ombudsman.
hi everyone. has anyone gotten an update on ant's mom? last i heard, she was going to take her flight out here, but haven't heard from her. hoping everything is ok. we have gotten warnings in the yokosuka area, but we are ok for now. i am also making back-up plans to fly out of here should things escalate. what an unfortunate string of events. a BIG sad face to all those who had to cancel their trips to see their loved ones. of course, safety is top priority, but i know many of you were looking forward to it...what awful timing.
abc, I have ant's mom's cell phone number in Japan and the number for her son. I will try to send them to you. I have not heard from her and I am concerned because last I heard she was flying on Sunday. I think your decision to fly out if things get worse is a good one. Radiation exposure to a fetus is not good. So far staying inside should be sufficient.
Sandra, I wrote the GW Ombudsman asking if the CO would write a letter restricting our travel and received the State Department advisory. I am finding out that because the plane is still going it is getting dicey. Here is a link to a site that lists countries that have travel advisories in place)http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110315/wl_nm/us_japan_travel_factbox). I am dealing with United and I have a travel agent friend who is helping me. They are dragging their feet but I think it is time to go up the chain of command and get someone higher up than an agent in India who hardly speaks English that can be understood.
I have asked my doctor to write a letter telling me not to travel for medical reasons. I am also going to contact my senators if need be for help.
I am so thankful that I have all of you who share my feelings.
I am new to N4M but so happy I found it, my son will be on the GW soon and boy do I have questions. Thank you all so much it's nice to know I'm not alone.
Kate and Sobo, I DO understand your feelings about wanting our sailors far out at sea, away from this disaster. But the GW is undergoing some much needed maintenance. To depart early could actually place them at bigger risk. Also, I can't imagine our sailors feeling relief to be leaving all the dependents behind. These are very difficult times.
My g'daughter posted on FB that there is a scheduled blackout during the advancement exam. I know that all the events of this week and the ensuing blackouts and mandatory shut-ins because of precautions against radiation have made it exceedingly difficult to prepare appropriately for the exam. My prayers are with all who are taking the exam this week!
Good Morning all! I am new to the group, however my son Michael has been on the GW since last July. I talked to him yesterday and he said all is well there and they are taking every precaution necessary to keep everyone safe! They are now working 6 days instead of 5 to speed up the process of moving out early. He tells me not to worry! How can I not do that! I am a mom of all sailors I have to worry!
Thank you Claudia! My son is undesignated, so he works wherever they need him. Mostly though on the flight deck. I just saw on facebook that they are recommending everyone get 72 hour NEO packets (noncombatant evacuation packets) I hope this isn't the sign of what's to come. I'm sure the Navy will take care of all of our boys!
Masue, I believe if the sailors are supposed to take the test, it is required. I know last year my g'daughter had just finished C School and everyone said she would not be promoted because she had not yet been to the fleet. So she asked why she had to take it. Answer: Because those are the rules.
I am sure the evacuation packets are a precaution. Should there be another quake or tsunami and dependents had to get out quickly, they would be prepared.
Many years ago ... we are talking dark ages ... dependents were evacuated out of Lebanon. They arrived in Naples with nothing but the clothes on their backs. No evacuation packets/preparedness would have been very useful. I do not think the Navy anticipates that they will have to use them. If they really did, they would be evacuating dependents now.
Recently, I was involved with sending pillowcases to the 3/5 Marines. They are in the thick of fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan and have suffered terrible losses. I was working with a Marine assigned to the Family Readiness Group and commented about the danger. He told me that really the Marines deal with it much better than the families. They know what is going on and we have our imaginations. Imaginations can dig up the most awful things if we allow them to do.
You know someone once asked Stephen King where he got his ideas for books. He said that he just took every day fears and amplified them. So the trick is for us not to amplify our fears ... which are very real.
I know that is is the job of moms and g'moms to worry and we do that job very well. It is the job of our sailors to be strong and they do that job well, too. They have been well prepared. It is very good to have people who understand the roller coaster we are on.
Hi Everybody.......I'm baaaaaack!! Been disconnected from the internet for a couple of months because of weather extremes here. When the quake and tsunami hit last friday I said ENOUGH!!! Get this satelite hooked back up ASAP!!
Hope everybody is doing okay. I know it has been a VERY anxious time. I'm hearing from Kelcie daily, with updates, but can't wait to read all of the posts to get other perspectives.
ABC.......you out there? Check your personal email :-)
My daughter is in the Deck and wanted ne to reach ou to the Mom's and Aunt of the following Sailors Hendricks and Harrison to let them know they are alright. Our families and friends prayers go out to our men and women serving our country in Japan and our most heart felt prayers go out to those affected in Japan. God bless.
hello folks. looks like i am leaving here as well on saturday... i've been in quite a mood lately...very somber, but i know it's for the best. sailors are safe, they are just taking precautions. see you all back in the states!
I don't have a loved one on the USS Geo Washington but lived in Yokosuka for many years as a Navy wife. We are getting regular updates from a dear friend that retired and stayed in Japan and still works on base.
If you are not on facebook, specifically the USS George Washington's page, you might want to check it out. This was posted earlier this morning:
We were just briefed at CNFJ that we are to proceed with a Voluntary Military Assisted Departure from Japan. First flight will be within 24 hours and could depart as early as tonight. The destination will be Korea where personnel will be processed for further repatriation. Families that desire to depart Yokosuka under this evolution should gather their NEO paperwork, most importantly passport and ID, and prepare no more than 1 bag per person to take with them and pets in travel carriers. Stay at their homes, buses will come to the housing areas to pick people up. Those living out in town will muster at Fleet Recreation Center. More to follow shortly on the process and priority of personnel departures.
Did I read somewhere that sailors who have received orders to Japan but not shipping out will report to their nearest base? My sailor is still at TSC (6 more days) but rec'd orders on Tues for Japan....
Masue, I don't know if your son is on Facebook or not but I have found that the best way to contact my g'daughter. You can send private messages there as well. Now if they are on board ship access to the Internet may be very limited.
Linda, those going on the GW should have their mail catch up with them soon, just like it does during deployment. The air wing has different evacuation plans and I am very uncertain how mail will track them down. I asked my g'daughter this morning if I should send my care package and she told me to wait for now.
I just found out my Marine g'son is moving to a "hotter" place in Afghanistan. Now something else to worry about.
Michele, I wish God would ask my opinion! I realize that in the scheme of things I am much more fortunate than many but sometimes it wears on one.
I have been sending care packages and have to put that on hold until I know for certain that his address will be the same. I have to hold for my g'daughter as well until I am certain where they will go. My uncertainty is because she is with the air wing. I gather that they are being handled differently.
I find all this uncertainty more trying than I did in the early days.
Hugs to all. I know all of us are feeling the same roller coaster.
Talking to Kelcie almost daily. She said that their barracks rooms have not had internet access for the last several days, so if that was your main line of contact with your sailor, not to worry. Everyone is safe and preparing for departure. I also feel SO much sorrow for the Japanese people.
Take care everyone, hopefully they will be safely underway SOON.
Oh, Sherrill, hugs. It is always so hard when our children are suffering. When they were young, we could kiss and make it all better. Now the hurts are harder to make all better. I am glad she is coming home where she can be around people who truly love her.
Dear Nav4Moms family - got back yesterday, am exhausted, so short note - it seems you are all updated as much as I - my understanding risk of exposure has most to do with prevailing wind direction - information was sketchy, most info I got came from base, not much info from Japanses news broadcasts - was worth it for me to see my son, though short time - am glad everyone is safe and trust and am amazed how quickly the US Navy was able to pull together action to take, so many people in Japan and in that area, massive numbers - Leah
Welcome back, Leah and Kathy! When you are rested, please tell us more about your trip.
Leah, abc wrote me about the time that you were leaving. I was relieved to hear from her. I am so glad that you were able to give your son the Mom hug you have been saving!
Kathy, I had planned to take the trip on United from Dulles to Narita and back.
Kathy, I was supposed to fly out on March 17. Monday I canceled and I am disappointed but think I made the right decision.
Navy Ma, having grown up a military brat, I am used to information being limited and constantly changing. That does not make it less frustrating or disconcerting.
Kathy, Many thanks for sharing some of your experiences. It also convinces me that I did the right thing.
I do understand about the uncertainty creating stress. I suspect that the sailors are feeling it as well. It would be hard to think you are doing one thing only to find out an hour later that it is something else. I could see the stress on my g'daughter's face when I talked to her on Skype yesterday.
Winavymom, Your sailor may well still join the GW. The 7th Fleet has a mission in the Pacific and it will continue. It may be from Japan and it may be from a different location. I suspect right now, they have new sailors on hold until they sort things out. There is no sense in having more bodies to contend with.
hi there everyone. thank you for your concern. it means a lot in times like this. :) i finally got an email from my husband since we parted ways. he unfortunately had duty, so he's been stuck on that ship... i have been hearing different talk here and there, but think i know what is going on... be assured that the gw will keep our sailors safe. i got back to the states last night & have been trying to take in everything that has happened...one week ago, who would have know how things would transpire?
for the moms who were able to make it to japan even though the trip was cut short, at least you got to see your loved ones in person! every second counts, right? monday, i will start trying to see how my tricare insurance will work out here and try to get an appt. to make sure the baby is still doing ok...i know i've put him/her through a lot in the past week! i think i am going to sprout a few gray hairs at this point! those who don't have a loved one in the military (especially overseas) will never quite understand what this feels like and i'm glad i have this group of wonderful ladies to share with. most of the navy wives i talk to are also stateside now with a few still waiting around in japan and they are all heartbroken...i hope to find out what happens next very soon! feel free to private msg. me.
Hello everyone - Just reading Kathy's info, my experiences were the same - I ended up going to Yokohama on train and then from there able to get on bus to Narita as Narita express traiin not running - my son's precious girlfriend helped me or I would not have made it to airport - I could only get sketchy information - the unknown factors were the most trying, but knew I needed to leave to be out of the way - I did feel confident that our sailors were and would be taken care of - my heart just felt so deeply for the dependents/children etc.. and then also the world being turned upside down for the Japanese and immigrants in Japan, I tried desparately to get my son's girlfriend a plane out but could not (she could only go back to Philipines), I got the last seat out on my flight - definitely a testimony of how life can completely change so quickly and the sacrafices that our military and their families make - I do so appreciate being a US citizen and appreciate our country even with our flaws - let us send our prayers out to our sailors/families and the people of Japan - I am so thankful for the support and caring concern of all on this site - abc, you take care and let us hear from you!! Thanks Nav4Moms - Leah
Hugs, Sherrill. I know that this is a difficult time for you. Enjoy having your daughter around. I know she will really be glad to have her family's support in this difficult time.
Glad to hear all the updates. Sherrill, winavymom$, said it so well, right now, I am taking that advice also. I so hope the best for your daughter. I know she will be so glad to come home, and dogs and all, it is so helpful to be with those who love you in tough times. Sandra, thanks for the recent update. I check here first for updates as just trying to decompress myself and get back to normal. So glad to see my son but sad it was so short, but thankful for anytime. And thanks to all of you and your support! My heart goes out to the GW family and may they soon have stability and as much normalcy as possible.
cfsnow, I imagine that you would still use the address your daughter had. I asked my g'daughter, who has been evacuated from Atsugi, what her new address would be and she said the same as before. So long as it is an FPO/APO address you will need customs forms.
NavyMa, thanks so much for the news link! So much to take in, just glad our sailors are safe. Everything so terribly sad. I am so praying for all families to leave as quickly as possible and be safe. I am beside myself, waiting for Ant's girlfriend to leave the country, the 24th. I could not have transported myself alone to airport w/o her. Please keep praying for our families to relocate safely and keep any news updates flowing. Appreciate you all!
cfsnowmom, I'm sure that the info that BigDMom posted a couple of comments below is correct. I used the same address for Kelcie whether she was in port, or out to sea. The post office sends all military mail to a specific place, then the military sorts and sends it on to wherever the service member is, based on that APO/FPO information.
I did read that the ship is no longer taking relief blankets and that they should be sent to one of the Japanese addresses. I'm not sure where I read it ... CFAY, GWOmbudsman, Naf Atsugi ... one of those pages on FB. I read too many and my head swims.
I am really confused! Can we still send packages or not?? I have like 300 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies I was going to send them, then the earthquake, then them pulling out of port...does anyone know where they are heading? I haven't heard from my sailor since 3 days after the quake.
Kathy16 thank you for the info. I will give that a try. I still have not heard from my sailor and this not knowing is driving me crazy! I guess i'll throw some body wash in the care package going out this week LOL.
I am so grateful to have you all as friends it helps knowing we are all in the same ship (pun intended) LOL
God Bless you all, and Marcia Dickey love the poem
Marcia....LOVED the poem. Katlanta, those poor guys :-( That probably IS a rather discusting shower. Kelcie isn't thrilled with her berthing situation either. Primarily because it is smack dab in the middle of a bunch of the male "contractors" and she is NOT feeling very secure. But she's a smart cookie and has taken a couple of steps to keep her and her 2 berth mates safer. I missed a phone call from her today. I was SO mad at myself for turning my phone off at work. From now on, I don't care HOW much trouble I get in, that sucker is staying turned on :-) Have gotten a couple of emails from her also.
Heatherose, they are not actually in the same berthing, but they are the only female berthing (and just 3 of them) at the back of the ship and all the surrounding berthings are being occupied by contractors. Then she was REALLY mad because whoever is in charge of their berthing area wouldn't let them put some kind of security lock on their area. Don't know if she raised enough cain to get that changed or not.
My son in law is on the GW and my daughter(his wife) is still in their apt on the base , she is staying , as nothing manditory has happened and she hopes to stay in the apt with thier belongings and 2 cats, frustrating but we support her. We haven't seen our son in law in a few years but when the ship has been out in the past two summers our daughter has been home so we we fortunate enough to see her this summer. We also were going to go visit the end of Feb and had to cancel due to surgery I needed and the surgeon recommended not flying( wish I didn't listen to him) hindsight is everything.

cfsnowmom, I'm sure that the info that BigDMom posted a couple of comments below is correct. I used the same address for Kelcie whether she was in port, or out to sea. The post office sends all military mail to a specific place, then the military sorts and sends it on to wherever the service member is, based on that APO/FPO information.
