Hi ladies, it's been awhile. Does anyone know of this "Family Day" on the GW? When and where is it to take place? My son mentioned it to me about a month ago. Any info would be great.
Okay...old salts...tee hee. i've heard of a 'ceremony' for sailors that cross the equator. What is this ceremony and does it matter how many times they've crossed the equator?
I just got an email from my sailor..he is now a shellback. Thanx for the explanations. I saw someting on wikipedia (which has crapppy info) and it seemed kinda farfetched, almost hazing. I am wondering, given all the bad press about at sea behavior,if these things are monitored better?
My sailor seems to be doing very well....which makes ME a bit more at ease (:l.
So happy for the new shellbacks! My son went through this right of passage last year so he was on the other end of the new sailors and had a blast :) Lots of fun for all!
Oh, they have toned down the Shellback ceremony considerably. It may seem farfetched but I have yet to meet a Shellback who isn't proud of the designation. My brother, who was a Navy pilot, has his certificate framed and on his office wall. He wrote to my g'daughter last year to tell her that he was so glad she was no longer a "slimy pollywog." If you go on PBS you can watch a segment of "Carrier." There are a video of the ceremony.
Oh, my brother told me that it is important to get it noted in your record that you are a Shellback. Otherwise, the next time you crossover, you will be considered a slimy pollywog again.
To all of you going on the Family Cruise, have a wonderful time! Most important of all, enjoy your sailor.
Hugs, abc! It's hard to be pregnant during the summer but soon your life will be turned upside down. It will be so much fun to snuggle with your little one.
My son is in the communications department and recently became a Petty Officer.
He has been in the Navy since Feb 09. He just finished some training in Florida and I was able to spend 15 days with him in May and July. It was so good to be with him. He is back in Japan. I miss him so much already. Rose
I am trying to find out if my daughter who is on the USS George Washington is okay. I have not heard from her in several months. I have e-mailed her, texted her still no response from her. She has an Iphone 4 and a laptop.Shanzie 21
Shanzie 21, try not to worry. I heard from my son, for the first time in 4 months, yesterday. I got 2 lines saying he's busy and everything is fine. If you visit the GW's facebook page you can keep up on the ship news and they have great photos, new ones almost daily. http://www.facebook.com/pages/USS-George-Washington-CVN-73/17773287...
This number called my husband's cellphone on July,27,2011 1-054-340-00.He didn't answer it because he didn't know the number. Now he is saying that it is military.
All I want is to know that she is okay.I have not had any contact from her since she got back to Japan from Guam when they stayed there so that the people of japan could use their base.
No.The package was something that she order over the internet and was sent here instead of the her addres in Japan. It was not a gift for anyone here.It should have gone to her instead of coming here.I have been told to contact her commanding officer, but I don't want to get her in any trouble.
It is getting late here I am going to try and get some sleep and try not worry.I am hoping that I can just know that she is okay.I have not seen her in over a year and I miss her very much.
hi there! i'm still here and STILL pregnant! (ugh). :) but getting very close now. i've been feeling very "off" today (nausea, flu-like symptoms)... i'm hearing it's a sign that labor is near...or it could be nothing! ha. i will definitely try to update if/when anything happens. so thank you all for your well wishes. :)
and for shanzie21, if that number is tracing to military, i want to say there's a good chance it MIGHT be your daughter. there was a time when i kept missing strange calls from a weird number while my husband was underway. i tried tracing it and it said it was someone in the military trying to call. there are sailors who have the privilege of using one of the ship's phones (not the payphones) to make calls and that is when these weird numbers will pop up.
I have gotten a lot of emails from my sailor. I love it. They changed there emails to go like this: First name then . (period) last name@cvn73.navy.mil
You have to put that period between the first and last name. Good Luck
Mary ~ I read you got some pictures of the new shellbacks? My son went thru it this time. He said he had a blast. Would love to see some pictures. Anyway you can send them to me? Also, what's this show your putting on? I think it's you? Is it in Florida? where is it? Would love to get the flyer. Thanks!! <3
Hi all, hope everyone is having a good day. I haven't been on for a while but just wanted to check the board. I'm loving the fact that my Daughter and I email back and forth every day. We've received two calls so far.
There is a lot for them to do at this location. Kelcie loved it there last year. This is actually one of the pictures she sent home after last years visit.
Stephsmom, I believe beach duty would be duty on shore. I know my g'daughter refers to "the beach" and she means on shore.
I am so sorry your mom needed hospice. I know that many of the hospice units do make life easier but it does not change the fact that your parents need hospice. Many prayers are coming your way. Please be sure to set aside some "me" time. It is not a luxury but does allow you to recharge yourself so that you can continue.
Talked to my g'daughter on Skype. It was so nice albeit too short a chat ... her battery died on her computer. She has a boyfriend and she is enjoying doing things in Thailand with him. Last year she found Thailand very hard to take. She was staying in an area where she could see the exploitation of very young girls and that really bothered her. This year she is in a more pleasant place and, while it still exists, it is not in her face.
stephsmom, i'm sorry to hear what you and your family are going through. very odd, but i know a few people who have/had lung cancer and they didn't smoke either. i will definitely be thinking of you and yes, please make sure to take time for yourself to re-energize.
i hope everyone gets at least one chance to talk to their sailors very soon! as for this baby girl, less than 48 hours to go before she's here! :)
Stephs Mom....so sorry to hear about your parents. I lost both of mine to cancer also. It's good that Steph got to see them this summer though. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers as it's a hard time.
Millye, try the Emerald Dolphin in Fort Bragg or Mendicino, I can't remember for sure, but I think it's Fort Bragg. It's about $90.00 a night during the "off season" which is pretty much any time after Labor Day. I'll try to get some more specific info for you.
My sailor rode an elephant yesterday and today(?) was hoping to see the "bridge over ther river kwai". I LOVE reading his emails about adventures in port.
OH...holy CRAP....just re~read my sailor's email and googled 'katooey' also spelled 'kathoey"...they are he/she's! My son and his buddy "ran into" one at go karts!! WOW..new experience for sure!
My son will be joining the USS George Washington at the end of the month. Please tell me how do you communicate with your Sailor? Cell phone service? Computer/Skype? Does he need to pay for wifi or cell service? Please help!! Thanks so much.
Also, (sorry) sounds like we should get him an iphone and skip the computer. That way he can get email, internet and facebook, music etc. Would that be the way to go? Thanks again.
hi everyone! i am here at the naval hospital hooked up to all kinds of stuff...i will be back later, but just wanted to introduce you to the newest N4M member. :) welcome Lia Anne.
Born August 10th
6 lbs. 10 oz.
19.7 inches long
everything went smoothly. she is healthy and taking a nap next to me. :) thank you everyone for thinking of us and your well wishes!
Have anyone's sailors emailed aboout food poisoning? My Man Cub had food poisoning and was on bed rest a couple of days ago (throwing and going). He was given anti nausea meds and put on an IV..poor guy.I just cried when I read that.
Katlanta and SueS...I am sooo excited for you both!!
kathy... I email my son daily and do my best to give him encouragement and insight. . I could tell by his last email that he was unhappy. While he was sick he said there was a lot of bickering and it just made him feel worse to realize that some of the sailors were so inconsiderate.
hello ladies! i've been meaning to get on here, but have been waiting for some of the 'new baby madness' to die down. KATLANTA & SUE...are you ladies ready??? i should be ok to meet up with you two if you have the time. i've been walking around as much as possible even though it's at a slower pace at times. and i hope all you ladies were able to touch base w/ your sailors last week. :) from what i have been hearing, the internet connection wasn't so great at the last port.
lia is now 10 days old and doing great! thank you all SO much for your kind words and well wishes! i'm still getting used to being a mom, but we love her to pieces!!!
thanks so much everyone. :) sue, thursday should be fine. keep my number and feel free to call or email if it's easier. not sure about the loaner phones...i would THINK something like that is available, but i just don't know. let me try to ask around. i bet you're getting REALLY antsy now! just a little bit longer!
Hi all! I just wanted to come by for a moment and introduce myself. My son has been told he will be on the G-Dub later (probably after New Year's). He just finished a two year assignment in Korea and was scheduled to go to Whidbey Is. then found out that the squadron he is now working with, is being restationed to Japan. For the time being he just flew this week to a country in the Middle East waiting to be called out to the Bush where his squadron has been deployed for a couple of months.
I might not return much, or have much to say over the next couple of months until he is closer to joining the sailors in Japan. I just wanted to go ahead and get my feet wet in the group. I look forward to getting to know many of you over the next three years.
Sue and Katlanta, when I went last year, I didn't need a phone, as Kelcie had two, but I do remember that you can "rent" phones at the airport. I HIGHLY recommend it, as what little I did use my own phone was VERY expensive. Hope that both of you have a WONDERFUL time with your sailors. Japan is SO interesting. It was my first experience being someplace where I didn't speak the language, and although I've always considered myself a very independent woman, it was pretty intimidating :-) But I survived and it was definitely worth it.
sue & katlanta, yep, i know where hotel new yokosuka is. when my mom arrived last week, it was too late to issue her a guest pass (thought they issued 24 hrs.), so we had to book her a last-minute room at that hotel. it wasn't how i wanted her to spend her 1st moments here, but it's VERY close to the main gate. literally across the street, you're actually closer to the gate than the navy lodge is. so please have a safe and comfortable flight and contact me if/when you have some free time!
abc, thanks for posting more pictures of Lia! She is so cute and in one of the pictures she appears to be quite alert. I hope you are able to settle into a routine that works for both of you.
