If I send a package while the ship is out, use the proper last four of the zip and they get back to Japan, will the package find my son?
  • sam

Hooray! Got 2 emails from my son today. Sounds great and having a great time. Looking forward to our visit in Dec.
  • AmOm

Yes, the package with follow him - land or sea. Did you all see the CNN article where the reporter was on the GW?

  • lmnadelady

willsmom, I sent a pkg to my son when he first arrived in Seattle before his squadron moved to Japan.  The squadron was at sea when he arrived in Seattle, his mailing address is to the Squadron.  Took 5 wks for his Christmas cookies to get to him in Seattle.  Not sure if your sailor is with a Squadron or the ship crew.  My sailor has returned to Japan for the remainder of this cruise and told his shop mates to open any packages and enjoy the goodies.  Maybe Katlanta can get and answer to this question.  I'm thinking til the ship returns my sons packages would be in limbo.  Squadron addresses follow the squadrons where ever they are.

  • momof2sailors

I have a son station in Japan with a squadron. And I use the same address whether he is deployed or back at base. And he has gotten all his packages.

  • lmnadelady

Yes I know it is the same address. But my son has returned to Atsugi and the Squadron is still deployed.  It would be nice if it got forwarded to him, as I included the next book in a series he is reading.  You know how hard it is to buy for these sailors.  LOL

  • Mary (Chris' mom)

Good morning all! This was at my son's facebook page so I stole it! A funny twist on a serious subject.

Do you like OPSEC and ham?
I do not get it, Sam I am.
I do not get OPSEC and ham.
We must use it here and there.
... ... We must use it everywhere.
You CAN share it in a car.
But you CANNOT in a bar.
You CANNOT share it in a text.
You CANNOT share it at the NEX.
You CAN say it in your house.
But should NOT tell a random spouse.
You CAN say it in the shower.
But do NOT go sharing at happy hour.
    DON'T make the Ombudsman sweat.
DON'T post it on the internet.
You CANNOT share it in a tweet.
That would not be very sweet.
Beware of Facebook and Myspace too.
It's tempting to let your feelings through.
You Cannot tell it to a friend.
NOT even at the very end.
It is a privilege to know a date.
DON'T tell ANYONE or they may be late! Oh, I get it, Sam I am. Now I get OPSEC and ham! I will not tell anyone. I will keep hushed until they're done! I will not tell him or her. I will not tell my dog with fur. I will not tell my child's teacher. I will not tell any creature. Thank you, THANK YOU, Sam I am. Thank you for clearing up OPSEC and Ham!!!

Imnadelady, I agree with you on the packages since your son is not ship's company. Chris did not get his package before leaving the ship but told his LPO to please watch for it and he would get it when he returns to the ship. The boxes I sent to Atsugi about two days after the one I sent to the ship, arrived early last week. Maybe your son can shoot an email off to his LPO asking them to hold his unless they can forward them to the base.

    Happy Friday Ladies!

Mary - Love It!  Cute way to get the point across...thanks for sharing

J Peder - your sons responses are funny!  My son is not a man of many words either I usually have to send several emails to get just one answer out of him.  But he does keep in contact with me frequently so I'm not complaining....I cherish all the emails no matter how small!

Mrs.Bis - Good luck to your son with his wisdom teeth...OUCH!

    bsb - awesome photo!

Hope all the Sailors are getting their packages and calling home or writing back to say thanks!  We know our Sailors love and appreciate us but it sure is nice to hear the words from them!

  • sam

Joshmom, you are so right about how nice it is to hear from them. My son finally made it to the flight deck so he has time to email and I love his short little notes.
Thank you USS GW for the squadron info. I feel like the package I mailed today might actually arrive there!
  • Shelly

He Everyone!  My sailor is on the GW with the Saberhawks.  I have been trying to keep up with the Japan Mom page but I thought it might be nice to join this one too.  I see another Mom I know from another page.  I just love this site.  Moms are so helpful and supportive.

Have a great week and Navy Mom Hugs to all!!!

  • photomom CTN/AO

Last Saturday I shipped 4 boxes to one of my Sailors. I can't wait to see how long it takes for him to get them!!
  • lmnadelady

That will be interesting to see if they all get there at the same time.  That is one lucky sailor.  My last pkg contained the next book in  a series he is reading, I'm thinking it will be too late when he gets it (he will probably have already purchased it).  He has returned to Atsugi and his mail will go where for the remainder of  this cruise.  Just sent a Halloween pkg as he had told his shop to open and enjoy his goodies.

  • MaggieMay

Katlanta - you're not crazy...it's just too early on a Monday morning!!!!

Hi Shelly! Glad you jumped over to join us.

Fingers crossed that packages arrive! Happy Sailors = Happy Mommas
  • Mary (Chris' mom)

katlanta....roflmao. I have done similar stuff before! Think I posted and immediately refresh and find I did not hit "add comment" so..no post! Or like you, posted on a different page! lol...Hope the rest of your day stays on the same page as you. :-)

    {Navy Hugs}

  • Jenny M'smom

photomom- Last month I sent two packages on the same day, one to my son and one to a sailor in my son's dept who had never gotten a package.  The friend got his a week before my son haha My son was getting really concerned about where HIS  stuff was :)

  • BADma

Hi Shelly!!! Its ME from Japan Mom's! Glad to see you over here too.

  • Shelly

Hi Badma! Nice to know that we are both here! I also joined a Facebook page for Japan Moms that sounds like a fun, supportive bunch of people. I just love that we can bond over these things with people we have never met face to face. Its great to know there are others out there that understand.
  • Shelly

Jenny, we have sent 3 packages in the past 4 weeks. We just heard that he got the first one so I am curious how long the others will take. He just loves to get beef jerky. He says its VERY helpful to supplement his meals. He I'd a picky eater.
  • taptap22

@ Shelly - what is the name of the FB page you are referring too? I looked up Japan Moms and the group only had 11 members - am I looking at the correct group? My son just arrived a week ago - miss him terribly but we have talked and he is really enjoying it so far!

  • BADma

Shelly....are you referring to the 'secret group" on Facebook, by invite only? If so, I was on that but left.I am FB friends with the 2 admins though. I'm going to Tucson on Saturday but only a day trip for a baby shower. Sometime we ought to try and get together when I am there for a couple of days!

taptap22.... Welcome! This is my son's tour on the GW. he has been in Japan since May 2011.

  • Shelly

Badma-yes, I think it is a secret group. Sound like a fun bunch. I just want to check out everything. It would be great to get together. Pan Mom Alicia and I are planning a lunch get together in November. It would be great to see you too! If not keep me in mind for any other time you are in town. Even if its just a cup of tea or coffee at Starbucks.
  • BADma

Shelly.... I sent you a friend request and message (:

  • Jenny M'smom

Beef jerky a must in all packages :)  I put a pair of jeans in the last one because my son had taken two pair along and one is too tight and the other has a hole/frayed at the bottom and can't wear them off the ship in other countries.  He said the best thing I ever sent him was a portable DVD player (for his bday).  When is everyone sending out Christmas packages?  Probably end of November....but my brain is not in Christmas mode yet.  Nephew graduates AF BMT end of next mo. so that is where the current countdown is geared toward.

  • ChristineRenee5

Hi ladies, quick question. My DH has a birthday on Friday and on Saturday I messaged the GW's FB information so that they could post one of those 'happy birthday' pictures up for him. As of today, they still haven't read the message. Have any of you posted one for your sailor? How did you get in touch with the GW? I am making the assumption that it hasn't been seen yet because it says sent and not seen.
  • AmOm

I sent one to my daughter via private messag on FB. They don't always post in by their birthday. I think it was a week or two after my girl's bday before they posted it.
  • Shelly

Badma, I think I responded to your friend request, but I am not sure it went through.
  • BADma

Shelly... Yes, got it! It would be fun to meet you and Alicia in Nov. Maybe we can scare up Ang,too! It just depends on how much time we spend there.

  • Shelly

Taptap22, I must apologize but I am not sure how but someone found me and invited me. If I can find out, I will let you or the admin for the FB page know.
  • willsmom

Ahhhhh, I just spent 2hours Skypeing with my Sailor. Such a great time. Just Bs' ing about his friends and coworkers.

  • willsmom

I didn't finish. Suuuuuch an amazing talk to me. I miss that boy! !
  • Andelson

I skyped with my son Saturday.  He was in Singapore.  Last I heard, he was having the dead skin eaten off his feet by fish.  So funny.  I love the wonderful experiences he is having.  He told me that gum is illegal in Singapore and the laws are strictly enforced.  Gotta go make some peanut butter cookies for him.  I just purchased a food sealer to send stuff to him.  He states some things get moldy by the time they get them, so I am taking precautions...

  • Kimberly P

Andelson, I was told not to use butter when you bake, instead use the Crisco butter sticks and it keeps it from going bad as fast. Didn't know if you knew that or not?
  • Andelson

Thank you for that information.  I did not know.  :)

  • Alicia(12/053 - AO)♥

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. Got to skype with my son last night, also in Singapore. Crazy rules they have! He says everything is really expensive too. But judges enjoying his time. Hope all its well with everyone!
  • mattsmom

Hi ladies, haven't been on here for a while, but I do read the comments every day as they come through as emails.

I spoke to Matt on Sunday, but via Facebook chat. He tried to call 5 times and could hear us, but the line was dead on our end. Made me a little sad, but he hadn't forgotten about my magnet !!!  He buys me one at every port as a souvenir. Works out perfect size wise as they don't take up much room..lol.

He too was lying on the beach in Singapore, enjoying the port stop. So glad they got a much needed break. Have a great night, Sue

A mom's nightmare! My daughter called this morning and told us her wallet had been stolen in Singapore. No money, no id and she is more worried about Navy discipline for the lost military id. She's worried about paying her hotel bill. I've done every thing I can from this side of the world. I've comforted her and would just ask that you all pray for her. If anyone knows of anything that can be done to help, please let me know.

  • Sherry

CoCoBeansmom... So sorry to hear that!!! My husband said make sure she got a police report and there should be minimal discipline... Sucks though!!!!

Love all the Halloween pics so cute!!!!!

Thanks for the comments on my handsome boy!!! He had an awesome time in Singapore!!! Hates they are pulling out but at least they will only be out to sea a couple weeks before the next stop...
    Have a great day ladies!!!!
    Hugs!!!!
  • Sherry

CoCoBeansmom. My son just FaceTimed me and I told him about your sailor... He said a lot of his friends that chose to stay in a different district have had their wallets stolen... He's heard so many stories from my husband and the advice my husband told him is it may be more expensive in certain areas but you have less of a risk of that happening....
I can't imagine the stress that your daughters experiencing right now...being in a different country trying to get everything taken care of and not knowing how long it will take to get another debit card...how to pay for stuff in the mean time... I'm sure her friends will help out with things...I will keep her in my prayers!!!!
  • barb_a

Hey ladies--does anyone know if the USS George Washington provides Navy Rack Packs for its enlisted personnel as a matter of course?  (I am trying to decide whether to order one for my daughter for Christmas.)

  • lmnadelady

barb,  I wanted to buy my sailor one for the last cruise.  But he said his Squadron had said no to them.  Shadowhawks!

  • AmOm

I bought my girl the rack curtains but boy what a horrible experience. It took over 8 months to get them to her (after paying for them) and I never was able to get the "free" embroidery. I had a terrible time getting them to call me back or email me back. They said they outsourced their embroidery and they were way behind. I was told it was be at least 2 more months before they could be done but if I wanted them without embroidery they were would do out that day. I said to go ahead and send them without the embroidery. Next thing I know, my money was refunded on PayPal. I thought, great, they are sending the curtains but refunding my money because of all the trouble it's been. I didn't want to assume this so I wrote a message asking them. No reply and I was wrong. They just refunded my money and canceled the order. I called and called and finally got through and was told to buy them all over again and they would send them that day, without the embroidery that she really wanted. (Wow, not even a little break for all the trouble!) I thought, well at least she'll get them for her birthday., Wrong, they didn't send them that day as promised but after about 4 weeks, my girl got them. I felt so bad that she had already gone through one deployment waiting for them. Especially since she absolutely loves them. I guess that's what counts.

  • Kelly

I have never made a comment but visit N4Moms everyday... My son has been on the GW since July and is having an awesome experience.... Since this will be JJ'S first Christmas away from home I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for gift cards that he could use while on land . Maybe on base or on ship. I have no clue where to start for a package that might help him get through the holidays ..
  • Alicia(12/053 - AO)♥

Hi Kelly! So funny, this was just discussed on the Japan moms page..----
    NEX CARDS - https://shop.aafes.com/scs/default.aspx
I just bought my son NEX gift cards for his birthday. This way he can get what he wants or needs. I had them sent to me and then i sent them in his package. Super easy!
  • Kelly

Thank you.., that is a great idea. I have been racking my brain for something he can use and he needs too. The only thing he asks for is beef jerky and ramen noodles... And letters lots of letters.... lol... Thanks again...
  • AmOm

My daughter has loved getting Amazon and iTunes gift cards. She just bought boots with her Amazon cards and loves getting new movies with the iTunes cards.

  • JDMK-NavyMom

Okay ladies I need a little help. Sailor has put in for 1st leave period and wants me to start looking to cheap airline tickets round trip from Narita. I know and approximate date for 1st leave period but it would be helpful to know the exact dates. Does anyone know the exact dates. Don't post here but send me a friend request and PM. Thanks and I hope everyone has a great weekend.

  • CoCoBeansMom

Thanks to everyone who posted encouraging words regarding my daughter and the lost wallet. I've already mailed her new debit card for one account. She will have to order a replacement credit card when the GW get's back to Japan. On the positive side it will keep her from spending too much. She is doing better. Hey, if any of you remember, over a year ago medical diagnosed her with cancer. After a few appointments it was changed to a diagnosis of precancerous cell's that were present. She just told me this past week that she is all clear! No cancer, no precancer cells, zero, zip, nada!! I think they will be checking her every six months but what a relief! Many thanks and blessings to all who gave so freely of advice and prayers. I/we are so blessed to have such a fine support group. You all are wonderful. Never, ever be afraid to ask the simplest question or voice a concern. Btw, our ombudsmen are awesome and so helpful!  Have a wonderful day!

  • Sherry

CoCoBeansmom... Awesome news about your daughter being cancer free!!!
    Have a great weekend guys!!!!!
