Right Sharon, I have heard of many doing combat training after a deployment. Odd how that works.

Momof4 it does depend on what unit he will attach to.

Sharon- what unit is your son in? I do not remember if you mentioned that at some point.

  • hotflashes

I think my son is NMCB1 ??? is that one of the battallions?
  • Tobianne

My daughter is NMCB40 she will be out of PH, CA. She is going to Japan later this year. This is called shore duty? I guess since they are not on a ship, lol. Not to sure what it is that they actually would do in Japan?? Not a big thing though. They all love the travel (I am sure mine will). Would think they do work of course, but it is hard to think of what would be needing done. lol
  • SeabeeWife20

Tobianne-my hubby is on sea duty. Our homeport is Gulfport, but during the 54 months we are stationed there he will be sent on 8-10 month deployments. When he gets back he will train and PT until the next deployment....that's really all they do on homeport from what he has been told. When they are on shore duty, they basically do what's called "pushing papers." They sit behind a desk and do no deployments at all. They also usually lasts about 36 months or so. It depends on the rotation. Of course, it could change depending on the current situations that are happening in the world, nothing is ever for sure in the Navy lol.  Kayla is most likely on sea duty first since she is deploying to Japan. My hubby may also be deploying to Japan, but a whole lot quicker than I would like. We may get a month together in Gulfport before he is shipped, still waiting to hear if it's for sure or not.

On the other note about wives and girlfriends having the "family" over for dinner......if that's not the truth then I don't know what is. I have quickly become family with most of the Seabee's here in A-school. I feed them, take them off base when they need to, and have become a second wife to few others LOL. I really love the Navy and especially the Seabee's. My husband makes me proud every single day and I'm excited to see what else he is going to accomplish during his time as a Seabee :D

  • Tobianne

ok, so if she is only going a short time then this would be sea duty?

Yes I never even thought of the earthquakes. I sometimes get past things happening right here and forget that we still live in a huge world.

Thanks for that information. I am still learning a lot myself. We look to all the ones who have gone before us to answer some (pretty basic really) questions.

I am happy, I know that no matter she will be happy. She wanted to go to Japan. This child has gotten pretty lucky, everyplace she has said would be nice.... poof it (was/is) where she has been/will be.

sorry not sure if that made any sense at all....

  • SeabeeWife20

LOL, it made sense to me! I'm almost positive she is on sea duty. If you ask her, she should know. I am still learning, but I do a LOT of research. I spend my days at home on the computer on military sites. I have become a "go to" person for the guys on base as well. I have been trying to help them and their wives figure out moving, housing, pay etc. They don't really have the time to do it, and some of the wives just don't feel comfortable asking questions or researching for themselves. I really enjoy helping people and sharing knowledge so it gives me great joy to help! There are so many things that I know about that my hubby doesn't....and when he finds things out he will tell me and most time I finish his sentence and he is just dumbfounded at how much I already know. They are really just like us, learning along the way. It also helps to come on here and see other experiences other people have had with the Navy. Honestly, I feel like it's the best thing that has ever happened to us, and we too have been fortunate enough to get everything we want.

  • SeabeeWife20

Denise: My husband has been told by some of his instructors and others who have been a Seabee for awhile, that when on shore duty they "push papers"....like I said that's just what he was told. We really don't know what he will actually do while on shore duty until he gets placed on shore duty. Not to mention, every one does different things, so someone else's experience on shore or sea duty could be totally opposite of anothers. We just go with the flow of things lol.
  • Tobianne

Sharon- I was going to ask about that pic. It is a pic like one Kayla's friend has. He calls his the God moment. His was in Afghanistan or Iraq though. Not sure I know it was mountainous.

    I love that pic.

She would be one to go on the mountains, in CA she and I climbed a (itty bitty) mountain with her friends. Ummm not good for momma (was just a year ago) but she felt great. I find higher up, I really do have same issue as most with breathing. Umm I get no air intake. She did great, she was running and having a blast.

I am happy for her, she really wants to go and see Japan, (Yapin as she has it renamed for my younger ones being silly), she says she can not wait, but then she says, I am going to miss everyone and everything I am use to. Welcome to the Navy!!!!

  • Jaz04

Denise, I thought the call to your son was a little funny since I told my son not to go mudding by himself.  I guess he had about 4 people there to get him out.  Boys and their toys.

Yes, I am a mom that has been told she is "too proud" and asked if I wouldn't buy anymore Navy "stuff".

  • Jmarie46

Any UT Seabee moms at sheppard afb waiting for orders
  • Jaz04

Maybe I wasn't told the full story, but I thought it served him right (can't listen to mom anymore because he is a big boy) lol.  There is all sorts of Seabee stuff on base in Gulfport.  I love my Seabee hoodie.  Most of my other things are Navy (not sailor).

  • SeabeeWife20

Jmarie46....i am here stationed with my husband who is currently in UT A-School. We already have orders and I leave in a week and a half. My husband will follow shortly after. Are you here for A-school or do you have someone here?
  • Jaz04

Am working on taxes for my Seabee today.  Does anyone know if you can deduct the cost of getting all legal matters in order?  That was one thing I made sure we did before he left for bootcamp.

My son will be moving into an apartment with a buddy next month.  Not sure I am liking that idea, but I have to let go sometime.

  • Jmarie46

Manda my son is there now waiting for his orders. He is just started 2nd half of a school a week ago. His name is michael
  • Jaz04

Denise, I guess old habit.  Another one to let go of.  Of course he didn't pay for it.  So I will check with a co-worker that does taxes.

  • Tobianne

Kayla made it to GP safely last night. Got her room and today is sort of alone!! All of her friends from Sheppard are in FL for the weekend.

She says she found the subway and got something to eat. She has no idea where anything is at.... new base, new place to explore and learn.

She is a bit sad, she had to leave her "someone special" , I think this is life in the Navy. Although he will also be in PH in April. So this helps her.

  • Tobianne

I know right. It is a somewhat balanced meal.... ya got your veggies in there. She gets the healthier things, (well she use to) lol .

She is good this evening. Everyone is back. So now she can have someone to chat with. I am now sad. She called me 3 times today. That was before. lol now I will be happy to hear from her once a week, well that does not include the text messages. I get those every day. Mean ones if I forget to text her that I love her and good night. Ha who says they get to big to still need to hear that from momma everyday.

  • Tobianne

Ok, someone help me here. Kayla calls and says mom, my card does not work here! I have to use cash at the galley. (little background) my kid goes to therapy at least one time a week, this is called retail, mall, spenders!!!! She left TX with not quite 150.00. Then she had to pay for the taxi and eat at the airport, oh forgot that she sent home the digital blues.

I said did they not tell you this???

Today they did. I had to sign papers to have the money "we do not see for food" put into my check and that will not be until next pay.....

What happened?? Should they have done this before they left for GP?

Now looking to send her some money, since I know she told me to really ask for some.

Any way did any one elses BEE go through this with out being told about it before?

This does not excuse the fact that she spends so much money and should have actually had money left to handle this.

  • Jaz04

Tobianne, my son had that too, but his card worked at the ATM's there.  On a lighter note, my son programed into my calendar on my "Haha, I love you mom".  So every night at 6 I get that message.  Sometimes the moms need to hear it still every night.  And there is always the "see ya, love ya, bye" before we hang up the phone.
  • Tobianne

Jaz04- Not her ATM/debit card. This is the card they swipe at the galley. They also use this card in school for taking any test on the computer. It has all the information on it, SS#, and amount of food money that was sent to the card as well as how much was used. Her debit works fine... her problem is it worked very well in Dallas a week ago and she spent way to much of her paycheck. lol

I have sent some money to her account so she should be fine until payday. This is why I think she is not getting a Navy CU account. I am on her account and can transfer money back and forth between our CU accounts.

The last thing I try to do is text her at night. Some nights I am sleeping when my head hits the pillow and I catch her in the AM.

  • Tobianne

Prayers going up for your son Denise
  • SeabeeWife20

Jmarie46: message me your sons last name. My husband only knows people by their last names.....it drives me nuts, but that's how they all communicate. Your son may already know who my husband is--he's squad leader for UT's. He also leads the PT's with two other guys. Once my husband knows who he is, I will send baked goodies his way and let him know they are made with love sent by his mom :-)
  • cindyrb

    Manda,

Are you in Gulfport? Is that where your husband is stationed?

  • Tobianne

Manda, when do you leave for GP?  You are packing and still making goodies for the guys... God Love ya girl.

Just to tell ya Kayla said it is so pretty but so cold and she really wants to walk in the ocean!! When ya get there let me or Kayla know. She could come and help get stuff moved around with ya.

  • SeabeeWife20

Cindyrb-I move to Gulfport next week. My husband will follow a few weeks later.

Tobianne-I will definitely let Kayla know when I get there. I will bring her to the house to hang out so she can get off base for awhile. We will be living right on the beach so she can walk there from my house :-)

And yes, my kitchen is still open! It will not shut down until the night before I leave. In fact, tomorrow is one of my hubby's friend's birthday. I'm making him a two layer homemade yellow cake and homemade frosting. We are going to have him and a few others over and BBQ hamburgers and such. It should be fun.
  • Tobianne

Manda- your husband better treat you right.... He sure got a better wife than I have ever been in 22 yrs of marriage! lol

I may bake a cake for him once a year (maybe) cookies I do, cinnie rolls a lot. But you girl are a gem.

Kayla was at the retiremen home today (they send the sick Seabee's there for work I think consist of chatting with the veterans) took pics of the beach and then later went over and took a few more right on the beach.

She misses your hubby. She said when you get to know someone, and then have to leave it sucks. She said her fav was rover with him. She can not wait until they all get there. Must have been a fun group there.

  • SeabeeWife20

Tobianne: He really is a great husband....I couldn't have asked for anyone better. He treats me like a queen and I'm the one who is lucky! He doesn't expect much from me, but I expect it of myself. I feel like a bad wife when I don't cook and clean for him. Guess it's because my grandmother instilled it in my brain that it's my job to take care of my man lol.

As for the group here--they truly are great guys. I can imagine she feels a little lonely down there right now. Once you build a bond with people it's hard to break it. They have all been together for roughly three months and there's not much to do here, so you really do get to know everyone well.

Their rover pictures still haunt me. I'm deathly afraid of spiders and those were just disgusting. I also enjoy the stories of doors being unlocked and open when no one uses them. I definitely wouldn't have the guts to go in a room and check it out the way they did lol.
  • Tobianne

yeah didn't she fall into a room or something like that? ewwwww nope not me. They know they can rely on each other and of course the trusty flashlight can do some damage...

She would tell me stories of the rovers with the different guys. I would always ask, you were not scared? naw, my brothers would never let anything happen to me, and I would not allow anything to happen to them. Gotta love family.

She is one of the guys, she says they do not really treat me any different. So for this I love them.

  • Gulf Coast Mom

Any moms of Jan 21 PIR grads going to Gulfport out there??  I was at the USO in Gulfport yesterday afternoon (mentoring so I can volunteer) and a group of six new sailors came in.  They were only there about 30 minutes before the duty van came and picked them up.  They were all hungry - said they left from Great Lakes, then layover in Atlanta they to Gpt.  The duty driver said chow was going to be in 30 minutes so they needed to head out.  It was a neat experience - all lf them looked so good and all so polite.  I am looking forward to getting a regular time to volunteer.
  • SeabeeWife20

I have a question for anyone stationed in Gulfport--I know there's a forum for Gulfport but it doesn't seem to see much attention. So, I am reading info on the CNIC NCBC Gulfport website about drivers license and registration for MS and it says I need to get a MS license within 60 days and register my vehicle. I am curious if this is actually true, or if those enlisted in the military are exempt from this rule? If anyone has the answer that would be great....if not I'll find out when I get there and let all of you know for future reference :-)
  • SeabeeWife20

Ok, I called and spoke with the Captain of licensing this afternoon. He told me that military families who live off base are required to change their driver's license within 60 days and their plates within 30 days. He said if I were to live on base I wouldn't have to. However, the judges see that when you live off base you are setting up residency in the state of MS and need to change everything. It doesnt make much sense to me to have to change everything every time you move to a different state, but rules are rules and I'm not getting a ticket over something so silly.

Halfofawhole: I have heard about the Military Spouse Relief Act, but I thought that only dealt with issues on taxes? I may need to go read about it. But if it's a new law they are supposed to follow, MS doesn't know about it, or the people I spoke with today don't.
  • SeabeeWife20

Well I did a little more research today on the licensing and registration issue. I'm starting to get frustrated with the MS websites, because they have about four different websites that all give different info. The MS Department of Public Safety is in charge of licensing and this is what their website said:
DPS policy permits non-resident military personnel and their family, and any out of state college students to drive in Mississippi provided they hold a valid driver’s license from another state.

The website for the MS Vehicle registration gives information for military members, but only to those with a home of residency in MS. They say nothing about non-resident military. The problem for my husband and I is we bought a vehicle here in Texas, because mine died on me. So now we have California ID's and Texas plates. It doesn't matter where you register your vehicle, but it becomes confusing when you have different states for everything :-/

I guess we will either change everything to MS or leave it as is. Out of a the things that could be hard and confusing this is the only one that has me stumped. Everything else is a breeze LOL! Thanks for the help ladies :-)
  • SeabeeWife20

LOL...kym I don't think their is a "right" with this. I'm just going to leave everything as is and when it becomes a problem deal with it then. Happy 21st to your son! I hope he has a fun and safe birthday :-)
  • Tobianne

yay the fighting 40... boo that he is there. Kym that is the unit Kayla will attach to when she gets to PH.
  • Tobianne

Kym we will have to collaborate. I am now not sure if I will get to Ca (when she gets there) to see her. She is talking about coming home with the new bo, and as much as I love that, I was looking forward to getting out of Ohio for a few days...
  • sandy (ship 9 DIV. 126 ) PIR 4/8

hello, i am Sandy and a new seabee mom... my daughter is at meps and going to boot camp in 9 days  :(  after BC she will be in Cali. for A-school

  • navymom99(ship09 div075)

Hey guys my daughter will PIR on 2-18-11. She will then go to Gulf Port for A-School to be a BU for the seabee. Any info would be great.
  • Tobianne

    Awesome, 2 more females...

Sandy- it is always hard for us moms, just know she is doing what she wants and a great thing at that. BC is hard on both ends, when she comes in that hall and you see her.... wow amazement. When you speak to her, you will see what a change has taken place.

Navymom99- same thing. However, I am sure in calls you have already noticed this.

My daughter is in GP right now for ECS school (combat training) she is a CE. Let me tell you, she loves what she is doing and she loves being a part of the Navy. I am proud of her.

Now for the Seabee's, this is family. They will grow so close to their brothers and sisters. Some cases females are very few in A-school. so this even adds strength to that family bond.My daughter miss her friends and family at Sheppard AFB (A-school) but was so happy to get to her family that was waiting on her at GP.

They are doing a great thing.

Welcome to both of you. I found that 8-9 months ago, these ladies in her are also like my family. We all are here for the same common goal. I love my sisters and have learned so much from them already and know I will learn so much more.

  • navymom99(ship09 div075)

    Tobianne,

My daughter told them she wanted to be doing something other than sitting behind a desk. Not that there is anything wrong with that, that is my job but she wants to be out helping. She loves it. She loves being outside also. She is going to go to school though to be a vet if all goes as she thinks. She may change her mind. Yes I can tell from her calls she has changed. Sounds so much more grown up and with a purpose in life now instead of changing her mind with the wind.

  • Tobianne

Navymom99- mine wants to be a coroner... so this is just a way that they can help and be a part of the lives around them until.
  • Jaz04

navymom99 - my son is a new BU - he finished A school in Oct.  Does she know what battalion she will be joining?
  • navymom99(ship09 div075)

Tobianne, Yeah that is what she keeps telling me. "I am hear to get an education but picking up a good skill along the way and getting to travel is a plus."

Jaz04,Not yet sure what battalion. They get all there information I think she said next week. Where is he stationed at?

and Thank you jean c glad to be here.

  • Tobianne

Seabeewife- she is still in the holding unit. She will start on or about the 13th of this month. Pretty stoked about it she is. Some of what they do makes me a bit queezy.

Sorry all my cable was zapped by the storm,  3 days down, you would have thought life ended around here. The 12 and 5 year old are going through Disney and MTV withdraw. They will be happy it is back on.... TV Junkies at the finest.

  • SeabeeWife20

Well this has been a week for the record books lol.....snow storm here in Texas caused ice on the roads and my trip to Gulfport has been delayed for 4 days now. They don't have the necessary equipment to remove ice from the roads since this is a very rare occurance. I could have taken the drive alone, but promised a friend he could ride with me and the hubby didn't want me driving alone. The friend was scheduled to graduate Tuesday, but due to the storm it was put on hold until today. The weather in Louisiana is now the reason we were told to wait because they have rain and ice today. Tomorrow should be sunny and warm in all locations, so all systems go. Hurry up and wait at it's finest!! Hubby will follow less than two weeks later....that's the only plus to the storm, i've had good quality time with him while the base was shut down for 3 days :D This storm has affected so much of the US, so for those of you dealing with this mess and worse, stay safe, dry and warm ;-)
  • Tobianne

denise- I feel for you and for him.

Good to know that someone has told him that the "elephant is in the room" though. Now he can watch his back. Can he go off base to get the dental done?

This is helpful even if someone is laying for him. God will heal the injury. He just has to know it is done and healed.

  • Tobianne

    Happy Birthday Tim....
  • Kss

I am a New Navy Mom. I need some help. What are the important guidelines that I should be aware of ? Any & all comments are welcome.
  • Kelleypen

I have a group of kids here at school who would like to write to deployed military in all branches.  I was wondering if there is a place I can go to get addresses for deployed military mail, ergo "To any sailor," "To any soldier,"  etc.

    Thanks.

    Kelley

  • Kelleypen

    thank you all.  Good ideas.
  • sandy (ship 9 DIV. 126 ) PIR 4/8

my seabee daughter called last night . she just got to BC at 11:00 eastern time, and was tired. still needed to do paper work and medical . She said they were not going to get any sleep . next is " the BOX "
