My son's girlfriend just graduated bootcamp Jan 28 and is now attending A school in Pensacola. Just thought it'd be fun to try and see if I can follow how she's doing and be up on the lingo and what she will probably be experiencing. I am very new to the whole concept of chatting on-line and being part of a group like this. Also very new to Navy.
My son graduated 02/18/11 in Ship03 Div080. He is in Pensacola Florida, waiting for shcool to start. We shipped him some of his personal items, phone, ipod etc...
My son PIR 3/11/11...A-School for AD and Helo. Still doing AWAT. Doesn't sound like he classed up yet. He says he thinks he will graduate on 5/4 and then has 2 weeks leave...is this accurate? Do most have 2 weeks leave between A-school and ship/shore duty?
Anyone else have someone leaving this week for SERE? UGH!!!
Or...anyone else in the NE OH area......check out the Ohio Moms group. We're having our April luncheon this Saturday and all are welcome....moms, dads, grandmas, wives, hubbies....etc.....
ok my husband will be there to do his A school. His recruiter says he will only be there for a matter of weeks, but from the sounds of things it could be months. Is there any way to get a better idea of time frame?
hi all, just found this forum. My son will be graduating from A School on the 5th. Going to Norfolk, Va assigned to the USS KEARSARGE. Anyone elses son/daughter ??
my SR should PIR on sept 16 will attend a school in pensacola for avation boatswain mate can anyone tell me about this rate someone told me this is a bad rate and some said this was a great rate any ideas
Is there a website for Pensacola NAS? I want to go down there in Oct/Nov to visit my son and he mentioned staying right there on base. I wanted to get more familiar with the base.
Does anyone know if the base closes down over Thanksgiving and if so what days? Also, if my son comes home for Christmas does he use his leave or are they given a certain number of days off without it going against their leave balance?
Thanks momofbp.....I'm anxiously awaiting her official address. I have things ready to ship out to her. We are also hoping she'll get some leave to come home for Christmas-ish. I heard new A-Schoolers fresh out of bootcamp have "phases" they must complete before being granted any leave. Is there any more information to that? I should know more after her meetings and such this week. Really appreciate the support here....thanks!
Thanks momofbp. My daughter doesn't even start until January officially, although there is much to do starting tomorrow. She was told at GL that she will have leave....then told maybe/maybe not/it depends. She's an IT and E3 so maybe there's something else going on with that. In any event, we'll take what comes. If she can't come here for awhile, I can go there. Patience is the key for sure!
Oh wow.....another graduation! Congrats to you and your son. I hear you on the distance. I'm in California. Check out kayak.com and the likes for good deals. I wish Southwest flew into P'Cola. They are pulling out in March.....great prices and very flexible. I'm sure my daughter will make it work. She's a pretty positive person who enjoys new adventures. We have family and friends out that way (I grew up in SC) so she's not exactly too far from family (just me :-/ )
Best of luck to your son. Where will he go when he graduates? Does he know yet?
Hello all, my son also arrived in Pensacola on Friday, he was in Diana's daughters division. He got to have one of his buddies from bootcamp as his roommate, so he is pretty happy. Said it's pretty laid back (compared to bootcamp). He is ABH, left bootcamp as an E3 also.
Got a text from my daughter at 3am my time - saying good morning and that her phone would be off and tucked away all day. Did not want to remind her of the 3 hour time difference ;-) I'll take any communique I can get......
Happy Monday after everyone! And I hear you on recovering from the Chicago expense. Trying to figure out a little stash for travels back east these next 2 years without going bankrupt.......
Yes it does continue :-), so happy the boot camp experience is over, I have about 5 and half more years before I have to go through it again, my youngest only talks about his big brother and how proud he is of him. Hopefully I will be able to stay sane through that one. There is only a 2 hour time difference still, my son found out the hard way, lol.
Hi everyone. My sailor graduated from Boot Camp at Great Lakes on Friday, Dec 2 and is now at A School in Pensacola, FL. I hope to get to know alot of other moms on here with sailors in Pensacola.
My son graduated BC 12/2/11 and went to Pensacola the next day. He was there till 12/19 and came home for Christmas break. His classes started this past Monday. He's an Aviation Machinist Mate. He told me that he is supposed to graduate A school 2/12/12. He hasn't said anything about SERE training, but he did say he has 5 different classes to take. He's just finished with the first one.
Sweet - If he's a Aviation Machinist, then he's an AD. His contract should say AD or Aviation Machinist. However, the Navy also has the Aircrew program also. So you really need to read his contract again.
Here it the official rules on the Aircrew program:
When my son left for boot camp, his contract was Aviation Structural Mechanic, but about half way through boot camp they called him to classifications and told him they had too many at that time and so they reclassed him to Aviation Machinist Mate (AD).
Sweet - That makes more sense. Aircrew is actually AW. AD is totally different than AW. AW goes through some really rough training, it's long and hard. You might want to go to this link. I had an AW write the day-per-day routine on what they do.
My son just graduated from Great Lakes Boot Camp and flew down to Pensacola on Saturday. He is now an Airman Apprentice. He is going into the Air Rescue Swimmer program.
It is so nice being able to talk to him every day - I hated Boot Camp where our only communication was letters! It was kind of funny that he left Chicago where it was snowing and the high was 18 degrees and he woke up yesterday morning and it was 26 degrees in Florida. I think he brought the cold weather with him from Chicago!
my kid will be there next month, when can I visit him and are their hotels near the school is he off on weekends does he come home after boot camp grad
Shirley, there are several hotels close to Corry and NAS. There is even a "Navy Lodge" on the base. Your kid will let you know when you can visit, because they have duty and watch schedules. Also, he/she will be Phase One for a few weeks and then will move up to Phase Two, etc. Your kid will let you know.
Thank you to all who have taken the time to post on this site. My son will graduate on Tuesday and be moving on. Your many posts have helped me understand what he is doing and it meant so much. Good luck to all and you will always be in my prayers.
Hello everyone....our son is in A school in Pensacola FL...he likes it there....we went to visit him for a week and stayed at Navy Lodge I would recommend it...right on base so makes it easier for you to visit your sailor....if you stay at Navy lodge your Sailor will have to make the reservations beach is right behind the hotel was very nice ..make sure you find out from your sailor what weekend they will be off so he/she can stay with you at Navy lodge..looking forward to getting to know some of you take care
My son just arrived at Pensacola yesterday for A school to be a PR. He texted and said it could be a long wait until he actually starts school. He was told that he could be there up to 8 months for his 4 week training. Anyone else hear this or have a sailor who has experienced long delays?
Hi , my son arrived in Pensacola Feb. 4th - he is an AT...it seems there are many sailors and not enough instructors so it takes some time before they actually start their classes..my sailor was there one month or so then classed up ... i guess it depends on their job. Just have to have patience I guess...Pensacola is a very nice Base ....we visited our sailor there in early April. take care
HI All, I have a question regarding graduating A School for ITs at Correy Station.... Are parents able to attend? I'm flying out May 17 for my daughter's graduation on the 18th. She is staying at Correy for C School but not sure when that session begins. What questions should I be asking her? She seems to think that I won't be able to get on base to see graduation due to the security issues..........
Hi Everyone! My son just had his PIR on 05/18/2012! It was fabulous! He's now at A school in Pensacola for Aircrewman. He graduated as an Airman. Yeah! Now he starts classes on May 29. Talked to my son last night. His orders said he was to start school on Tues. But he said that's not true - he's waiting to class up, not sure when or how long that will take!
