The purpose of this group is to allow family of new sailors assigned to school at Training Support Center Great Lakes a chance to voice questions to a Student Division Commander
I looked up the stores at Gurnee Mills mall. I know which stores here give a military discount, they probably do there too. Always ask. Hot Topic, Spencer's, and Maurices do.
I wasn't implying he HAD to use a backpack, just if you bring items, that gives people an idea of space for bringing it back to the barracks. Yes. A sailor can walk in with grocery bags that they can toss or recycle. You could also mail it later, and they can recycle the box. They could carry it in in their arms if they wanted, as long as their right is free to salute. I find it's better to just tell people about the backpack because it helps create a concept of space when people pack items from home, and prioritize like what needs to go, what could we just buy there, what could be mailed, and what just needs to be put into storage, and it helps families realize, like don't pack a bag for your sailor, they'll have nowhere to keep it, bring only what's necessary/what you have a little extra room in YOUR bag for,or what's really expensive to replace and figure the rest out later. That's why I always say the backpack thing when I talk about items, it's just a concept. Also, another thing to consider is that when your sailor moves barracks or leaves, he's not going to be carrying grocery bags or boxes or extra bags, they're really supposed to be able to move everything, in one trip, in their sea bag and backpack, and the uniform issue takes up 90% of the sea bag. Of course, I helped move my husband's friends who had a lot more than that, but when it came time for them to ship out to their next duty station, anything extra had to be sold, donated, mailed home, or thrown out. So again, I really emphasize this backpack idea because that's really all they get in the long run…until they qualify for live ashore either with their families or by high enough rank for their specific command.
Target is about 15 minutes away, Walmart is 20-30 depending on traffic. There's a student NEX that can be walked to and a NEX off base in the housing, this is not included in the "off limits" areas of base, even though it is in housing,or at least it wasn't a year ago, always good to double check, but that NEX in the housing neighborhood has much more variety because it's for all the accompanied sailors (those with families). Hawthorn Mall is about 30min away, that's where you'll find the big Macy's, but not much beyond that…but one of my husband and my favorite lunch/dinner spots is across the street, Calzones and Macaroni, it's delicious for something so simple haha! There's another mall, Gurnee Mills, and that has a lot of stores, usually very busy on weekends, and there's actually a shuttle, so anyone looking for small stocking stuffer ideas for your sailors, look up Gurnee Mills mall and they'll have access to any of those stores with the shuttle. They also have one of those movie theaters there that has the whole interactive thing…like where it'll spray you and the seats move and stuff. A cool experience, but I'll only do that once haha. There's small shops in libertyville and usually less people, there's a great Mexican place called casa Bonita, and they have a military discount. There's also this place called Wildberry's, you need to be willing to wait or get there early, but it is AMAZING breakfast. There's one in Chicago, but libertyville is much closer to base. There's a place I know I'm forgetting for shopping…in sure it'll come back later.
patriotmama67.... I was asking a similar question. I deactivated my Facebook account about a year ago and I'd rather not activated again if possible so I'm hoping that everything I need to know is on this site, which I feel pretty confident it is.
Allison, I love the "Fake Thanksgiving" idea, I am definitely going to send one to my son, and then the real one when he is home at Christmas. Thank you, Love it.
Good Morning Ladies, Happy Wednesday! these weeks sure are going by fast, it's already Thanksgiving next week. For some reason this year has flown by really quick.
Butterball, you're welcome, isn't that fun? I saw it on a blog, and I thought it was so creative and a good way to send a piece of thanksgiving to our sailors. I hope mine makes it to my husband in time and that he actually gets it…mail has been a little iffy over there for them I guess…and I can't track it once it leaves the US until it reaches the FPO. Fingers crossed it makes it or some postal workers are going to be very unhappy with me when the food starts to turn lol.
Oh my gosh, about the egg nog thing! As I was stocking shelves today, I noticed we carry an assortment of holiday limited edition ghiradelli chocolate, and one of them is egg nog! I thought this might be a fun little substitute.
Lol I just love target. Even before I worked there, it was one of my go to spots for home decor, more grocery variety, gifts, all that. They just always have really good deals going on somewhere in the store. That's pretty much why I work here, I get the extra discount and I get to see everything going on sale, clearance, or new items before they hit the floor haha.
I love Target, but we just don't need much stuff anymore. Best place to get clearance Christmas lights, especially the solar or battery ones we use when camping in the desert. Shopko is much closer to our home, and has the work pants my husband likes, so we end up there more often. I do shop Target online for sheets, they are the only ones who had the super deep fitted pocket ones for our oversized sheets. And they have the best selection of hot water kettles.
Hello Everyone, My Sailor passed his ( as he called them) Do or Die tests. He was very relieved. Should be done with A School February 5. He is feeling more confident every day. Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes.
So excited to see my sailor next Weekend! Also finally found out he will graduate A school just before the standdown. We will go for his ceremony and bring him home for Christmas the next day. He will then go to Hawaii after the holiday!
My son is a sailor I got the call today I’m so excited. He says he goes across the street for 10 days and then he gets to leave for 5 days then off to Virginia. He’ll be on a cruiser. I’m new to this so if anyone has some inside information about what happens next please tell. Thanks
@Missingyou ... here is a list of suggested things a sailor needs to be more comfortable on a ship. Velcro strips or suction cups, or a RackPack, can be really useful. Some ships do not allow the rack pack curtain, so don't buy one until he gets there and finds out.
Congrats to you and your Sailor Missingyou! wishing him all the best in his Journey!
The weeks are flying by, soon I will see my son! I cant wait for him to come home and see his New room, What a surprise it will be. I have gathered all his favorite Munchies and will be making all his favorites for Christmas, I just got to start on the Tamales, I just need the time!
I have ordered a Banner and decorations for his door to welcome him home. The things us Moms do, My girls are Jealous but OH WELL! He is the Baby so I have an Excuse.
I make the Hatch green chile Tamales, I put cream corn in the masa mix it well then we spread the masa put strips of green chilis and cheese, then on my red chili Tamales I mix beef and pork together make the red chili using the chili pods and do the Masa for that and start making them I'm not really into the sweet Tamales. I usually do 18 Doz. of both so I am needing time, I usually get my Husband to do the Masa, My daughters and son in law do the spreading and I stuff and roll and Package. so we have a line going. LOL!
Is she using the Navy issue sheets? Mostly it is just practice, and well placed hidden pins if she's doing the hospital corners. Safety pins, or even great big quilting pins, as long as the inspectors cannot see them. Is she allowed to have civilian sheets? Just buy a plain white fitted sheet to sleep on. If she can get her bed made to inspection standards, then she can just slip the fitted sheet over it for the rest of the week/month.
Today is my Friday. I actually will have tomorrow off! That will help me to get ready for my Sailors! My son and 2 female sailors. If you are from Florida or New York, and your daughters are coming to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving, rest assured I will take good care of them. I am so excited!
I would like to send a heartfelt message that the submarine that is missing be found soon, It breaks my heart to hear such news. and not understanding why? makes me really nervous and scared. Spoke to my son and he mentioned to me that he may be out at sea maybe 6 months they are in desperate need of EM"S and to hear this makes me really nervous. He also mentioned his Chit was approved! So I will be seeing him soon.
I'm new to this group, my Sailor will be in GL next week for A school- HT. I've been in other groups but he has a new rate and will be in GL until March. I'm reading and catching up on things in this group and the HT group. If there are any other groups you think I should join please let me know
Good Morning Ladies, hope all is well this Morning,
Welcome SusanL to the site they also have a site call moms of hull technicians. Congrats to your Son!
Ok Ladies I hate to be the bear of bad news but this morning I was over hearing that an Aircraft with Some of our Sailors Crashed near Okinawa they were being flown to the USS Ronald Reagan Ship 8 out of 11 Sailors were rescued they are ok, it is the other 3 they cannot find. Please say a Prayer for those Families waiting to hear something on their Loved ones. I am not understanding what and how this is happening but this is the 5 maybe more incident that has happened this year. I understand things do happen but it is making me feel more nervous and scared knowing my son will be getting deployed next year sometime and be out at sea. Not trying to stir things up but just wanting to share the news which is tragic and my feelings and emotions. Just wondering what you all are thinking of all of this. I know it is out of our hands but I cant help but to feel the way I do. Thanks Ladies.
Phoenixmom, I saw this on the news this morning and also on Facebook. I have been praying my little heart out for all of these families, especially the 3 that are still missing. Like you, I know God is in control, but I also have a son that will be deployed out to sea also, scares me to death. I keep holding onto that with God's Grace he will emerge from this journey he has chosen stronger than ever, and whole, whatever that maybe. Prayers for our Navy Seasters and their families during this uncertain time, continuously for sure.
Thank You Butterball for acknowledging my uneasiness with this whole thing. I myself just have my faith to rely on that My Son will also emerge from this long Journey at Sea. I am just hoping that they (The Navy) can come to some conclusion as to why these things are Happening. It is very unsettling. A prayer for those Families in Waiting.
Father, we ask You to send Your peace to those Families who are awaiting word on their Loved Ones. Continue to surround them with family, friends and loved ones who will offer words of comfort. Father, You are their stronghold. As they call on You, You have promised to answer. We believe that You will be with them during this period of uncertainty, rescue them from grief, honor them, and give them Your salvation. Amen!
What a beautiful prayer Phoenixmom 51, you are very welcome, we are all in this together, with our fears. I know the families are thankful for the prayers that we all will continue to send, for them and ourselves during this time and in future.
I would Like to wish each and every one of you Wonderful Ladies a Happy Thanksgiving, I know some of us will be without our Beloved Son/Daughter but they themselves will be having a Great feast of their own on base. May the calls, letters and maybe even Skype come thru tomorrow.
Jeremiah 33:11 Give thanks to the LORD of hosts, for the LORD is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!’
Psalm 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.
Good Morning Ladies Happy Friday, Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was Great.
My Son and three other Sailors were adopted from a Family he said it was really nice and dinner was Great. Played games. Later in the evening they allowed him to use a Office and Skype with us which was really nice of them. He looks great Just cant wait to have him home for Christmas. I just wanted to pull him thru the screen and kiss and hug him. Hope all of you were able to speak or Skype with your Loved one. Well Ladies have a Great Day, I had to work today any of you working or having the day off?
Phoenixmom I hope you had a great Thanksgiving as well, I bet it was wonderful to sit and Skype with your son! I picked up an extra shift in shipping last night to make some extra cash since my husband is away and they were short staffed, but it wasn't bad, our HR department ordered a bunch of food for us to have on our breaks and some people brought in leftovers from their thanksgiving dinners. My husband's section all made different things and had a friendsgiving in the lounge of their barracks, and he called me to help with the turnovers, so I did get to talk to him for a little bit Wednesday night, which is Thursday morning for him, and it sounds like things are going to be ready to go in just a couple weeks, so I have so much to do to get ready to leave! I do have to work this evening, but fortunately, the worst of Black Friday is over I think for my store because we opened at 6pm yesterday, so all the huge lines and customers racing around the store have passed.
Thank You Allison, Me and My family had a Great Thanksgiving, I usually cook for the whole family there usually is around 20 of us, But yesterday I made an announcement that next year I will be taking a break from cooking Thanksgiving and would like for someone else to take a turn and I want to be the one invited, you could here crickets that's how quite it was. I am the only one who provides and cooks the meal for everyone and I want a break, it would be nice to be invited for once. So there were a lot of pouts but we shall see.
Good morning ladies!!! I’m enjoying hearing about your Thanksgiving celebrations. My Sailor and a buddy got “adopted” by a married Sailor and his family. He said they had a great time. This Navy family sure is something special. I hope you all have nice weekends...My Sailor will be home in 26 days, I am sooooo excited!!! We haven’t seen him since his Feb PIR and his siblings haven’t seen him in a year!!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
We are in Great Lakes, for the long weekend. We checked our Sailor out Wednesday and don’t need to return him until tomorrow night. He has duty Sunday. We took him to my sisters for Thanksgiving dinner...my whole family lives close enough to Great Lakes so that was nice. We have had a few outings and lots of relaxing. We get to take him all the way home in just one month!
I'm so Happy to hear you all had a Great Thanksgiving.
Ima I am right there with you, many families opening up their home for our Sailors I am so thankful for their nice Generosity. My son had a great time also.
Librarianmom how awesome to hear what a great time! I am so excited that my Son will be coming home for Christmas. I just cant wait, counting down the days!
barefootie how was your day? were you able to speak to your Sailor? I know there are times that one cannot because they may be deployed, but I am hoping that many of you were able to share a hello and I love you. Best wishes to all!
Phoenixmom that's a lot of people to cook for, I used to get stressed just helping my dad for a group maybe half that size, and that's so nice of you to do, but you definitely deserve a break next year to just enjoy the holiday without worrying about all the food. I hope someone steps up and invites you for a change :).
I always tried to carry on my Mothers tradition, and because I was able to do that I did, I'm a real big Family person and I know sometimes others cant afford, but it does getting tiring and it does take a lot but I always enjoy doing that to bring all the family together. For Christmas I always have a open house for anyone and everyone and I make quite a bit of food and appetizers, but this year it will be a little different because I will have my son home so I will be making all his favorites and it will be a big spread and a big group. I enjoy it plus not to many of my family know how to cook, just thankful my Eldest daughter took time in the kitchen with me and learned all the recipes so she is a good cook and helps me out.

My feet were always cold in the barracks, slippers or slipper socks might be a good idea.
