what does "The ONLY thing they can get is from the FAFSA" mean??? its not a complete statement, so Im not understanding what they "can get". Please explain. Thanks

  • TX Momma Formerly*SHIP12-Div23*

My daughter went to legal TODAY- SHE was told that she IS a veteran- She is getting an HONORABLE Discharge- She IS eligible to RE-ENLIST- How can you say that someone that COMPLETED boot camp IS NOT a veteran, when they received an honorable discharge? They may not be eligible for ALL the benefits that OTHER veterans can get, but NOT ALL veterans that served LONGER are eligible for ALL the same benefits either. ( And BTW, my daughter was told the same thing as Navydad's son- She IS considered a veteran)

  • TxNavyDad

Jeanne... Yes he did enjoy it and so did we. Thanks for asking.

    Yes, we are still here.

Please let us know when you hear something and keep us all updated.

    Be Blessed.

There are other ways to talk or correct another person without sounding so snotty and condecending. FACT that is NOT THE WAY. The decision to serve your country is a brave and selfless one- even the ones who didn't get the opportunity had to make it. You need to learn how to communicate and not be so insensitive.

    http://www.moaa-nh.org/Do_You_Qualify_for_Federal_Veterans_Benefits...

In actuality, there is no standardized legal definition of "military veteran" in the United States. You see, veteran benefits weren't created all at one time. They've been added one-by-one for over 200 years by Congress. Each time Congress passed a new law authorizing and creating a new veteran benefit, they included eligibility requirements for that particular benefit. Whether or not one is considered a "veteran" by the federal government depends entirely upon which veteran program or benefit one is applying for.

  • JeanneT

Txnavydad.....thanks.....and Merry Christmas to you and your family. :-D
  • TxNavyDad

@Angie... Just to clarify the definition of a "Miltary Veteran"
You may want to read this before slamming someone and showing your ingnorance... As I said... I never claimed they were eligible for benifits...

    What Is A Veteran?

    ALL VETERANS ARE THE SAME
    What is a Veteran?

A veteran is defined by federal law, moral code and military service as "Any, Any, Any"... A military veteran is Any person who served for Any length of time in Any military service branch. [See #1 and #2, below]

    What is a War Veteran?

A war veteran is any GI (Government Issue) ordered to foreign soil or waters to participate in direct or support activity against an enemy. The operant condition: Any GI sent in harm's way.

    What is a Combat Veteran?

A combat veteran is any GI who experiences any level of hostility for any duration resulting from offensive, defensive or friendly fire military action involving a real or perceived enemy in any foreign theater. [See #3, below]
    NOTE:
    1. Veteran's benefits are based on Congressional regulations determined by Honorable Discharge or Under Honorable Conditions status.
    2. Retirees (either 20+ years service or medical discharge status) are also Veterans. Retirees are usually eligible for supplementary federal benefits, privileges and access on military installations, but not necessarily all VA services (some services are maintained by the former military branch), as regulated by Congress.

    3. Wartime medals define various levels of individual combat involvement, sacrifice and/or valor.

    4. (Ret.) or (Retired) may be used by any veteran when stating or publishing his or her rank to indicate they are not on the active list.

@Terri... Well said. I'm right there with ya lady. It seems Angie has an axe to grind and she doesn't care who she grinds it on.
Well.. I do care. So, I'll hang around as well to assist anyone who asks. If I don't know the answer, I will find the RELEVANT ANSWER to someone's questions.
    Thanks Terri for being here.
  • cpursley

Just like some of you I had the same problem. Angie was RUDE to me also. And by the way. .... news flash.... she was WRONG! !!! My son did receive a re enlistment code. So no matter what she says or HOW she says it, just know she is not always right. As for you Angie.... maybe you need to find something else to do with your time. Are you bitter for some reason? We are here to support each other while we all support our loved ones that are going through a hard time. And like my son. .... learning the hard way that life isn't fair. So I'm asking nicely for you to have a heart when you comment on here, because the rest of us are here because we need support not criticism.
  • TxNavyDad

Good Morning CP!!  Very nicely said. How is your son doing?

  • cpursley

Ok I guess. My husband just left to take him to sign up for unemployment, then we are going to sit down and try to figure out what to do next.
  • cpursley

    TX how is yours?
  • TxNavyDad

Our son is doing very well thanks. One of the first things he wanted after coming home was, Chik-Fil-A and to drive his 2008 Nissan Xterra.
When we leftvthe airport, we stopped to visit his grandparents, then we stopped at Chik-Fil-A and brought food home. It was hilarious watching him eat that chicken sandwich ever so slowly, savoring every bite and oh so slowly enjoying his large sweet tea. The grin on his face said it all.
Well, as always we will keep your son, you and your family in prayer.
We wish you and your family the very best Christmas and happiest and most prosperous of New Years.
    Be blessed!
  • Thetwoj

Terri, OMG!!! It's the exact same conversations as 2 months ago. WOW!

Anyway, to those of you who have loved one who have just or are going to be coming home soon, here is the deal with the FASFA.  They absolutly are concidered veterans by the US Government. However, the VA has an entirely different set of rules and, although her delivery sucks, Angie is correct in the fact that your returning SR's will not be elidgable for VA bennies. They will be elidgable for FASFA money, if school is the next step. Although the Financial Aid worker at the school will not know this and will fight with you about it. MAKE THEM CALL THE VA. As long as your kid has a DD214 that states they have an honorable discharge, they will be allowed to check the veteran status box on the financial aid paperwork which in turn will allow them independent status from you. In other words, the school will only look at their income when it comes to Pell Grant money (money they get for school that does not have to be paid back). It will make a huge difference financially for them and you. Again, you will need to force the issue, because the 180 days past boot camp is what everyone knows. Good luck, everything will be fine.

  • Janet

My son was sent to ship 5 after his eye exam; they say he has keratatitis.  This is a treatable eye infection, not something chronic that he's had all along. I think he must have got it at boot camp. Does anyone know how I find out if he is getting appropriate medical attention?

  • colormecrazy

Do they call the night before to let you know they're leaving?
  • TxNavyDad

@colorme... Our son did call the night before he left. He called after chow, which was about 830p cst in Texas. However he did not have his flight info until the following morning and called us from the airport with all the info.
Hope this helps some!! Merry Christmas!!
  • colormecrazy

I'm in the DFW area, it's 8:38. :( maybe he didn't make the list for tomorrow either.
  • colormecrazy

I am really praying I get a call.... but its not looking good. Congrats Bridgett. :)

  • JeanneT

Color. My son called. He will fly out of chicago tomorrow. He is coming home. He said they are getting everyone out of there fast. I only got to talk for a couple minutes. Hope that helps.
  • colormecrazy

I don't understand. I called legal and they told me he was on the departure list for Friday December 21!

  • colormecrazy

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a wet blanket. I am very happy for everyone :) Praying I get him home for New Years <3

  • JeanneT

Hang in there. I just got the call about 10 minutes ago.
  • JeanneT

Color...no apologies......we all know the feeling. I am sure he will be home by Christmas. you are not a wet blanket at all. Stay by your phone.
  • colormecrazy

THAT LITTLE SHIT CALLED HIS DAD AND WAS TRYING TO SUPRISE ME. omg.

  • JeanneT

Color......seeee. Our boys will be home tomorrow. Yay. So happy for you. Now we can sleep good. :-D
  • colormecrazy

Ugh!! I called his dad crying and he had to tell me. I'm all for surprises just not the ones that make me think that I'm not getting my husband for Christmas! I have to work all day tomorrow too which is just going to suck! But I am so happy, for all of us :)

  • TxNavyDad

Hey colorme... hmmmm... work tomorrow?? Is that a serious cough I hear coming from you?? Hmmm.... maybe a docs appt? Feelin to rung out to go to work??? I think so!!! :D

Anyway... I'm so happy for you both. That's so awesome....

    Happy Holidays!!

  • colormecrazy

I wish!! I just started today so I don't think they'd appreciate it. Our plan was me quit my job until hubby was done with boot & training while I focused on school until we moved to his first duty station. That didn't happen, so I'm back to work! He will come see me on my lunch break and I GUESS I will slave through 8 more hours without him. :/

  • colormecrazy

It is going to be hilarious to see his reaction to my belly now! (I'm pregnant) He left when I wasn't really showing...now I'm pretty showing. LOL

  • glorann1978

Okay I have not posted in a while but I have been following the posts. I am so glad that everyone's SR will be home for the holidays. Enjoy your time with them. I know our son made a comment that he has learned to appreciate everything he has. I have to laugh at what he says when I ask what he wants for Christmas. He said he has it, he came home (from ship 5). He says he lived without having things for about a month so he now needs to adjust again. I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and cherish the time we have been given.

  • TxNavyDad

colorme... Well heck... It was a thought...but being the first day as you say, that wouldn't too good on your yearly evaluation... <sigh> BUT!!! The best part is almost home. That in itself should help relieve some stress for sure. Who knows, maybe the new boss has a heart and will let you go when hubby comes to see you at lunch... that would be nice...

  • Z's Mom

Just wanted to say my son came home yesterday.

He sat in the bathroom with the door closed ( a rare treat he said) and showered "by himself". He too appreciates the small things now. I have to say, I am VERY upset by the fact he came home OWING the Navy!!!! They charge for the clothes and ditty bag - and he for some reason was not given the rank he signed for, so he nows owes the government almost $200!!!!!! Beyond grateful to have him back - so I am going to focus on that......Blessings to all!!!

  • Thetwoj

Well, for those of you who live in warmer climates and still have loved ones on Ship 5, they awoke to a nice covering of clean white snow today. I'm sure their spirits are up, something about the first snowfall of the year in Chicago puts us midwesterners in a good mood. Be asured that everyone is going to have a good day today.

  • TxNavyDad

@Z's mom... The "Ditty bag" as it were isn't really a bag, but more of term for toiletries, underwear, socks, pt uniform, sweats and running shoes. Our son got hit for the $200 which he will have to pay back once the Navy sends him a bill for it. They didn't take it out of his pay since he had already been paid.

  • JeanneT

Sixft......my son lands at 6 50 tonight. He wants food that is not "chow". Lol. We can not wait to see each other. I got to talk to him this morning for 20 whole minutes. Yah....the 11th of january will be a toughie for us being his grad date as well. Perhaps you all can do something fun and special today. My son sounded pretty positive and has a few ideas. He does not want to go back to Great Lakes. Thanks for being there. I will for sure hang around here and give back to othere that will be going through what we all have. God bless and happy holidays to you and your family.
  • abbyblue

If a member of the armed forces was discharged during basic training for medical reasons, they are still considered a veteran for Federal student aid purposes so long as they served at least one day before being discharged.this is so confusing so if they get to boot camp and dont stay there more then one day ?

  • TxNavyDad

@Abby... If they get to bootcamp, they will be there for more than one day. EVEN if they are going to turn around and discharge them the very next day, they still
Have to be sent to ship 5 for seperation, then they have to see legal because the SR and the Navy both are both under contract, so someone who gets to bootcamp will most definately be there more than one day.
Unless of course Angie has something to say about it.
But Abby, my statement is true to the best of my knowledge since my son was seperated.

It's so great to see you all sharing with each other in here and standing up to "Angie."  When my son was separated from boot camp earlier this year, hardly anyone was communicating in this room and so I was not comfortable writing anything because whenever anyone would post a comment, sure enough "Angie" would make a negative comment.  It clearly says no critics for this group and that it is suppose to be a haven and not for those seeking to attack those in need of support!  No matter the reason a recruit is separated, these are our children who had dreams and it hurts to see your children's dreams shattered no matter how old they are.  My son waited a year for his ship date to only end up being separated after 5 weeks.  He came home in June.  He was able to receive unemployment as he had been working full-time for awhile before leaving for boot camp.  After he came back, he applied for college and financial aid and he received a Pell Grant and other aid and is going to college full-time and just finished the semester with all A's and works part-time.  And so life does go on.  But until then, continue to be there to support each other.  Support your children and spouses emotionally. Continue to ignore the things Angie says.  Some things she says are correct BUT she seems to be very insensitive to those in this group who are going through a difficult time and are trying to process and understand what has happened.  She is definitely not honoring what this group is suppose to be about. Merry Christmas to all.  Take comfort in knowing that the New Year will bring better times ahead.

  • JeanneT

CAB....thank you for that. Most of us are just getting our kids home....It is nice to hear from someone who has moved on and is doing so well. Merry Christmas to you, your son and entire family. ps....I pick up my son tonight. Cant wIt to see him.
  • stephrn66

So happy to see on here that most of the SR's are actually getting processed out pretty quickly.  It's stressful to try and get through a holiday knowing that they are NOT at all where they want to be.  Our life is moving on as well.  Registered for spring semester classes, back on my health insurance and working part time.  His brother is home from school so it's been pretty much status quo like no one was ever gone. Lol  Hoping you all have a very peaceful and joyous Christmas and that things will look better for the New Year!

  • Melissa (ship 5 SEP)

Jeanne-  So glad he made it home.  I've been thinking about you,  Hope you have a very  Merry Christmas.  Jan 11th will be a day to remember.  My SR says he is happy to be home but if he could be anyplace he would be back on that ship working for January 11th.

  • JeanneT

Melissa......it is good to see and hug him. And likewise.....he didnt want to leave. sitting by the fire now and hearing stories. Wow.
  • JeanneT

Hi all.....does anyone know on the unemployment website, if when asked if you have been employed outside of your homestate in the last 18 months, if you mark yes. Does the military count as outside?
  • cpursley

Yes, its outside. BUT my son was told at ship 5 he could get it. He went up there this week and was denied because he didn't have 6 months of work experience. He went Navy right after school so he has never had a job. Not sure if this is a Georgia rule or all states.
  • JeanneT

Oh. Wow. My son worked for 3 years pruor to leaving so i guess we just have to go to the unempl. office and ask. Thanks everyone.
  • cpursley

Hope it works out for you.
