Recruits in SEPS are not supposed to receive packages, but some have sent things and sometimes a recruit is able to keep what was sent. It all depends on the contents of the package as to whether or not the recruit will be able to keep the contents or if the contents will end up being destroyed and put in the trash by the recruit.

There have been some increased restrictions lately that may not have been in place when shoppinmomma's recruit was in SEPS earlier this year. If your recruit asks for something, check with your recruit to see if other recruits have been permitted to keep the item without receiving some sort of discipline action or losing privileges, such as phone calls. If your recruit does not know, then do not send it since SEPS is bad enough without adding the possibility of a discipline action due to something you send.

My son went to boot camp four years ago. He was sent home four weeks later when they discoverd a birth defect we never knew about. The navy literally saved my son's life! He had the surgery to correct the issue which required him to wear steel bars in his chest for three years to reshape his rib cage. He jumped through every hurdle and road block for the next year trying to get back in. He finally shipped out on May 8th. Two weeks in he got pneumonia in both lungs with a high fever and was sent to the hospital. The pneumonia has never completely cleared primarily because he's not getting enough rest. He called yesterday telling me he's being medically discharged again. My heart is breaking. He worked for four years to get back in and now this. I've never heard him so defeated and discouraged. I have no idea if he'll be entitled to any kind of veteran or military benefits or anything since he never successfully completed boot camp.
    Any information would be appreciated.
  • diannep

Dr Von:  My heart broke to read this.  You have such a strong and determined son!  But I can imagine how his heart is breaking along with yours.  Wow....so glad the Navy saved his life like that....amazing.  So glad that he was able to get back in....and so sad that the pneumonia is sending him home.  I hope that he can get healthy once again and try again if that is his dream.

As far as military/veteran benefits....sadly no.  There are none when they are still in Bootcamp.  But I pray that your son will find his path soon....whether it be to try for a waiver to re-enter again....or....find something else that he loves to do.  I'm so sorry....but please tell your son how proud we are of him for working so hard....God has allowed this for a reason for sure....just hard to see His plan before it is fulfilled.  I hope that your son is able to be home soon.....

My son has been in SEPs for two weeks now. He called me last week saying he was going to talk to Legal and then he'd know when he's coming home. I haven't heard from him since. If the average time in SEPs is 10 to 20 work days, I'm starting to worry. I'd welcome some words of wisdom. ~Thank you

  • lemonelephant

Jenny, the FAQ indicates that the separations process takes 10 to 21 business days, but it has been longer lately due to the MANY being separated due to failing the initial run. I have seen 5 to 7 weeks or more for some.

  • Ayako

I just recieve phone call yesterday say my son failed physical test. My heart is broken & can’t stop worrying about him. They left message on my phone since I missed call, so I am not even able to talk to him or ask questions to anyone. I don’t know what to do. Can anyone tel me what do I need to do?

  • lemonelephant

Ayako, write him at the address in the FAQ in the info I left on your My Page. Let him know that you love and support him and encourage him to be thinking about what he wants to do next. Will this be a fork in the road to a new career or a detour and he will go back to the RTC after waiting 6 months and start the process again and go on to be a Sailor? Even if you had not missed the call, you would not have been able to talk to him. That call from him would have been a scripted call to tell you he was being separated due to failing the run. He will call again one day next week.

  • Seabeemom

My son was just sent to seps last week because of the new CO. He was previously being slowed to heal at RCU even though it was going to take 6-24 months. Has anyone else had experience with your recruit going through the medical board and physical board. He’s already been given an attorney and a PEBLO and has been told it will take 3 months minimum up to 6 months to process him because he will probably be eligible for va benefits . I’m honking he is a rare case since I can’t find much info or anyone else that has been through this.

  • Seabeemom

Yes, my son called around 1 pacific time, they were only allowed about 10 minutes today

  • Cindy3boyz

i received my call yesturday only to hear he is coming home due to a iep from school

as i looked into it i realize he can get a waiver (no drugs or add adhd) he was crying and sick he wants to come home i feel he is giving up and want him to stick it out life is tuff it'll all pay off i just need some advice

  • jpage79

I just got a very brief call from my son that he was sent to SEPS.  I know nothing about this process...ahhh!
How long do most recruits stay?  How does communication work at this point?
He said he can re-enlist in the future, does anyone have any experience with this?

  • jpage79

@angelatx - I understand how hard it is to have your kiddo so disappointed, it is heart-breaking.  But what an amazing story of connection with God and her purpose...I am certain she will accomplish great things.  Praying for you during the wait.

  • lemonelephant

jpage79, the separations process takes 10 to 21 business days, but it can be longer at times if there is a large number of recruits in SEPS.

He can write every day and receive mail M-F and most are able to call at least twice a week once they have completed intake at SEPS, but calls can be lost if anyone messes up.

Depending on his reentry code he will be able to start the reenlistment process in 6 months, but he will require a waiver to do so.

There is more in the info I left on your My Page.

  • jpage79

thank you lemonelephant, I will take a look

My son was sent to SEPs last week. He was ASMO'd two times and on the second time, I think it just mentally broke him. He was 12 days away from PIR and was ASMO'd 2 weeks, due to the Christmas holiday it actually was 4 weeks. So he was back at week 3. He was devastated. He said he is just not mentally capable. He wants to come home and get his head on straight and work out and return better. I did not think that they could just  quit like that. He did say that they told him no several times but he was persistent and told them he was not mentally ready. He is not being medically discharged, and he said they told him he could return in 6 months. Just trying to understand how it works.

  • lemonelephant

Yes, he will be able to start again in 6 months, but he will need at least two waivers to do so and it will most likely be longer than 6 months when he makes it back to RTC.

  • Jen

To Mom_06 .. if your son was persistent in leaving & told the navy he was not mentally ready, his chances of getting back in are slim to none. I have yet to see ONE person get back in that admitted to ANYthing mentally weak get back in. :( yes, recruits have been told 6months, waivers etc. Many also get denied before the board even with the waiver(s) prior to getting back in the second time. Your son will need your loving support because of the decision he made was to come home. If he was persistent then clearly he’s needing family support. Best wishes and hugs

Feeling emotionally spent-from excited and nervous and missing my son leaving for boot camp 12/18, to heartbroken, frustrated and sad when we got a call last week that he was being medically separated. He was doing well with all the aspects of BC so this is a shock.  Seems like an excruciatingly long time to get him home, he said it could be another two+ weeks (that would have been PIR). Worried about how it will be classified, he was still still waiting to get to legal.  I am trying to maintain grace and composure, but needed to vent a bit.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

AlwaysBeeKind - vent away - that's what these forums are for.  Hopefully when he sees legal he remembers to sign a waiver allowing you to speak to legal too.  And hopefully his separation is for something that allows him to re-enlist.  He will need to get waivers but it can be done.  Hang in there mama.

  • AlwaysBeeKind

Thank you, B'sNukeMoM.  It is nice to get some of those feelings out in words and even nicer when someone acknowledges them! I appreciate you and will keep hope.

  • Jogging Mom

New to this group, my son was sent to SEPS on 2/12/19 he has called twice this week to let me know the process for him to come has been started. He signed both of his waivers, now just waiting to see legal. Hopefully he gets a re-enlist code. The Navy was the only thing he has wanted to do he was so motivated for this , my heart breaks for him.

  • Shellie

My son also got sent to ship 5 on Tuesday the 12, only spoke one time to him briefly. Not sure what's going one, kinda lost right now.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Ladies I am sorry your SR's are being separated.  There is a FB group (closed group) that can provide you with more info.  Here's the link:

  • JacquieM

My son called and is also in ship 5. He said the conditions are pretty bad and said its like prison. He said it could take up to 5 weeks to process out. I have called my Congressman's office and they are sending me a list for my son to do. The first thing is to sign waivers, so they can speak to him. I have also tried to call RTC legal and they don't answer and no way to leave a message for legal. I have also contacted his recruiter. This is surely a lesson in patience.

  • Phoenixmom

Ladies here is a face book for ship 5 they seem to speak more on there then on here. I'm sorry to here about your Loved Ones.

    click https://m.facebook.com/groups/535221726514465?tsid=0.54347966362468...

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JacquieM - I am sorry to hear this.  Yes, the process can take that long - it just depends on how many are in SEPS.  Most important is for your son to sign the waiver allowing you to speak to legal and regarding any medical issues (if it's a medical SEP). Definitely be patient.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Phoenixmom - yes that is the facebook group that I posted this morning - I also added the link up above under Important Numbers and Info.  You will definitely find more support there.

  • JacquieM

I don't have Facebook. Got rid of it years ago. Too much drama, more like Fakebook.

What a roller coaster of emotions for parents and recruits. I do miss those "Hi Ma" big bear hugs and just want his happiness. I am sure he will be a mess when he gets home. He will surely have to acclimate and decide a new direction.

He didn't disappoint us at all. He set out to do his best, but when things happen, there is a reason why.

  • Phoenixmom

    Thank You Ma'am!

  • Phoenixmom

I totally agree JacquieM not much of a social media either. I'm so sorry though to hear what is happening. Big ((((((Hugs))))) to you and for your Loved One!

  • JacquieM

    Pheonixmom,

    Thank you for the HUGS!

Life is what happens when your busy making other plans.

  • Phoenixmom

I totally understand Ma'am. You let your Son know there are no Failures and he needs to be proud of himself, he took a great stand and guts to accomplish what he has. and not to ever give up on his dreams. there is so much out there for him to accomplish and with the stand and confidence he takes it will get him far.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • Phoenixmom

Love this! I totally agree! Thank You B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN !

  • JacquieM

No truer words! Thank you all for the support.

  • AlwaysBeeKind

Hi Ladies, I am so very sorry for you and your SRs. It is heartbreaking and we moms feel it to our souls.  Hang in there. My son was medically separated a month ago, we will finally have him home tomorrow! I don't quite understand the whole process, legal has still never returned our several calls.  The good thing is that they do call a couple of times a week. Sending prayers that your kids are ok. I am so proud of all of them and hope they stay strong! Hugs to all!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

AlwaysBeeKind - glad to hear you are getting your son home today.  I wish him the best in wherever his journey takes him.  And please thank him for enlisting - not many people will take that step but he did and he should be proud of himself for that.  Good luck to him and hugs to both of you!

  • Shellie

You no your recruiter was wrong, when the day you get home he calls and offers to start your legal paperwork for you! Just saying.

  • Chihuahualove3

My daughter injured both feet metatarsal fractures and therefore she could not pass the final run. They decided today to separate with an administration code. My question is where can I read up on the steps to getting waivers for her to go back in 6 months?

     Thank You

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Chihuahualove3 - when your daughter gets home have her reach out to her recruiter - s/he should be able to help with the information on waivers.  It will take some time so remind her to be patient!  (And she needs to heal first.)  Also be sure to join the FB group - link is up above.  They should be able to give you more guidance on re-enlisting.  Good luck to her - she can do this!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • Zacks mom

Hello ship 5.  My son called and he is being sent to seps after being in ship 4 due to knee injury he sustained at bc. I am so sad for him this was his first time away from home and when asked if he wanted to separate or stay he said go home.... he was sent to gl on April 9 and was in division who’s senior div had the terrible loss - which shocked and truly affected him. also he was injured soon after starting training- sadly when he stepped forward to show his fellow sr’s how to do an exercise- and was apparently picked for a leadership roll early on because his go get em attitude and willing nature-anyway before his first real call home where it was unscripted he called saying he was hurt and being moved to ship 4. On mother’s day I got a call and he was upbeat although going crazy not able to do anything and talking about becoming a pilot after his initial job was completed and he was to re sign up. Now he is heading home....? Apparently the doc said he could stay but would have to return to training, then when his knee- still hurt mind you- was fully destroyed due to activity- and would be soon while in training- he would be sent back to ship 4 to have major knee surgery be in ship 4 for possibly 14 months or so to heal and then continue his training to finish bc. Of course my son is homesick and hurt badly on top of that so he just was thinking of coming home to his family. And that’s what the doc recommended. I called his recruiter and he and I are both so very upset and sad as to zacks treatment. He is a good kid who needed the Navy and all the structure and commroderie it provides and now is being sent home injured!  I as so confused and sad/mad that he was truly injured at bc and they can just send him home- still broken to deal with it on his own...?!?  What do we do for him? How can we get this major surgery paid for??? Please if you have had similar experience or are aware of what to do let me know!!! I love our country and am so very proud of our armed forces- my entire family is military- but am so angry with this situation. ?!? Needing grace and wisdom.......!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

angelatx - thank you for sharing - I'm happy to hear that your daughter is home and doing well now.  Even though the Navy didn't work out for her it sounds like it gave her the confidence to move forward and find something she is excited about.  Everything happens for a reason!

Zacks mom - I'm sorry your son is going through this.  I don't have answers for you - I will recommend that you join the facebook group - the link is posted up above.  I'm sure they can give your more information as to his options.  The main thing is if your son thinks he wants to try and go back that he gets a re-enlisted code that will allow it. Hang in there - the main thing right now is for you to be supportive of him.  Please thank him for his willingness to join.

  • AmyLynn

Very confused as my son is being separated due to complications of pneumonia. He is now being medically discharge due to Symptoms of Low Oxygen in Blood normal value is between 80 and 100 mmHg and his is 91 ?

If this is something that will get better why the discharge? so soon.

  • Valtameri

    Dear AmyLynn,

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully he can come home, heal up, and be allowed to re-enlist (if that is what he wishes to do).

As far as the 91 goes, that depends if it truly is 91 mmHg (i.e., an arterial blood gas measurement) or 91% (i.e., a measurement of oxygen saturation). If the former, it is within the realm of normal, if the latter, it is a bit low (especially for a young person, one would expect mid to high 90s).

    Hope all works out.

Members - please take a look at the new discussion posted up above by gothgirlL "SHIP 5 INFO!! FROM A SEPS RECRUIT".

gothgirlL went through the SEPS process and she has posted a very good discussion on what your SR (and you) might expect.  Of course every case is different but this is the most up to date info that we have as of late.

Thank you gothgirlL for posting this - I'm sure it wasn't easy having to go through the process but we thank you for taking the time to share - and of course we are wishing you the best of luck in whatever the future brings for you!

Ladies, I found this website very helpful when my son was in RTC. I'm hoping someone can help me again. My son had his PIR in December. He's been at A-school since January.

This evening when I was on the phone with him to talk with him about the unfortunate news of his grandmother's sudden death, he told me that last week he found out that he was didn't"rerate" and is being separated.

Does anyone have more information about what this means for him?

I did share with him the suicide prevention hotline numbers. He's not in a good place right now.
