STG (Sonar)

There are dozens of different types of sonar systems. Once the Sailors get to "A" school, the Navy decides which system the Sailor will be trained for. Not only is my son a ST but both my neice and nephew are. ATT is advanced technical training, getting ready for A & C shools. Most all the electronic rates require ATT.

Nina, is your Sailor going to be on a submarine? That's the only SCC school I know of.

My Sailor left GL the day of PIR for SD. He started A school a week later, came home for 10 days after A school and went back and finished his other schools (I believe there was a 1 or 2 week break between classes). Before his first duty station, he came home for another 10 days and flew to Norfolk. He just happened to be in the right spot at the right time and the stars were all lined up. It usually does not happen like that, everything is "hurry up and wait".

STS = Sonar Tech, Submarine
STG AEF = Sonar Tech. Surface; Advanced Electronic Field (all those with this rate will require ATT and attend "C" school and usually are 6YO.

Some 6 YO Sailors who were promised "C" schools may not get them until after October b/c of budget cuts. They will go back to SD at some point and complete "C" school.

Nina, any info your recruiter may have given you is submit to change. They give you their best "guesstimate" of a time frame, but until your son receives his written orders, he will not know what is happening next. And with the budget cuts, it make the timeline worse than it was before....sorry to deliver gloom and doom :)

Nina, all "A" & "C" schools for STG are at the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center on Point Loma, San Diego. The very small base is nestled between Harbor Island and Shelter Island.
To the best of my knowledge (no jokes now...) our Sailors get their first leave after the completion of "A" school.

My nephew is a recruiter in California, I told him about the recruits being on hold at Great Lakes, he was very surprised. They really don't inform the recruiters of much once our kids go to boot camp. He said there are sooooo few jobs available that out of 20 recruits only 3 may actually get in.

My son is a 5 year with no C school.

SCOPE OF RATING
Sonar Technicians, Surface (STG) operate (manipulate, control, evaluate, and interpret
data) surface sonar and other oceanographic systems; operate surface ship underwater
fire control systems (with associated equipment) for the solution of antisubmarine
warfare problems; perform organizational and intermediate maintenance on surface
sonar and allied equipment.
These Occupational Standards are to be incorporated in Volume I, Part B, of the Manual
of Navy Enlisted Manpower and Personnel Classifications and Occupational Standards
(NAVPERS 18068F) as Chapter 73.

Now when our kids talk about their jobs we can say "oh, yeah, I read about that"!!!!

They take a break, but it's up to your sailor whether or not they want to take leave. My son came home last Christmas, but his room mate stayed at A school during the holiday's and went home later to see family.

Melanie, tell DJ once he gets to San Deigo to make friends fast. Then when he requests leave and he's scheduled for a watch, he can trade with someone. I visited my son in SD often and that's what he'd do to get the weekend off. :)

Joline: You may want to check with your Sailor and make sure he's phased up. Otherwise he may not be able to leave the base. He'll know what phased up means.

When Matt left for boot camp I called our insurance company and put the insurance on hold until I delivered his car to him. Their was no charge to do this. Same thing with Verizon, when he was deployed I put his cell service on hold and there was no charge. Keep that for future reference when your Sailors deploy....

Laura: Honey you must be getting old! I resent my email again today. It's dated May 21st. By the time you get it, the news won't be news anymore....lol, lol

When Spencer moves to the 32nd Street base he will have the San Diego trolly which stops at the main gate. He can take the trolly to the Gaslamp district and change trollys to go many, many places in SD. OR, at his expense, he can rent a U-Haul truck and tow his car to SD. AND my nephew has been stationed in SD for the last 3 years without a car and he has a car sitting right here in Tucson. He doesn't want the added expense and worry. He uses the trolly. Also eliminates any worries about drinking and driving but I know Spencer doesn't drink.

Melanie, boy it doesn't get any better than that does it!!! Both of your men home at the same time and over the 4th of July!!

Matt deploys to the Gulf in January and there is a chance I may have all three of my kids home for Christmas. I'm trying not to think about it....lol, lol

You might also tell your son that a lot of other Sailors will have their cars and most all of them are very willing to give a shipmate a ride. My nephew met someone from Tucson and they became fast friends, don't know if it was b/c he had a car????? lol

Carolyn, before we took my son his car he used the Trolly a lot. Or just walked.

Question - - USAA Insurance...does the car have to be registered in the name of those in the military? My son's car is registered in my name and when I tried to do it on line, it didn't work.

Your son's name has to be on the title (my name and Matt's name are on his title) in order to get a base decal. In Arizona, the registration is always the same as the title (names). It was easiest for me to remove my husband's name from the title and just add Matt. Next time he's home, I'll drag him down to MVD and take my name off of it. The insurance can remain in your name, your son just needs to be added to your policy if you go that route. Matt was deployed when I was doing all this car stuff so it was easiest to add him to my policy until he can choose his own insurance.

I hope Spencer gets his butt in gear. Maybe he's going through a phase. Any idea on when his ship deploys? What me to try and find out? Can you maybe let him have his car after he's been in SD for ___ months? Maybe by then he'll drop his civilian friends.

I'm so glad Matt is deathly afraid of needles. That's the only thing keeping him from a tatoo. I hope he never gets over that fear.....lol

Laura, they are "adults" and we have to let them grow up. AHHHH that's so hard to say, but its true. My son is too young to drink, so far so good in that area. Smoking, his grandparents on his dad's side died from it, so he hates it, keeping my fingers crossed on that one. Tattoo....well, he wanted to go get one, I have 3 myself and convinced him to wait until we went out to SD before he got one. He did, I took him to my Christian Tattooist and he got his first tat, I'm hoping that one will be enough to tide him over for a while. My son lives on ship, so having his car is like his own little place, if that makes sense. He gets off work, sits in his car, reads, listens to music, drives to the bowling alley (the best internet connection is at the bowling alley on base). He has even driven up and visited his grandparents in Los Angeles. So far him having his car has been a positive thing. I totally understand you have a lot of concerns, and Melissa has a good idea...maybe after deployment he can have his car...or after a certain amount of time he can have his car. Hang in there lady.

Melissa, my son's name did not have to be on the title for him to get the base sticker. It had to be on either the title or the insurance.

Debbie, we can't put his name on the title until it's paid off. He has another year or so before he's done paying for it. Thank you for the info, I think when he comes home next month we will call them and get it worked out, because currently his insurance costs more than his car payment!!

The base sticker requirements are different for Norfolk.

Melanie, that is awesome 6 1/2 years!! As for your son, let's hope he saw and learned from what you went through and he will be careful.

Good Morning Ladies, today is Donna's birthday and I hope you can send a little birthday wish her way.

Deb - the single guys stationed in SD and assigned to a ship usually stay in the barracks. They are very nice as my single nephew has been stationed in SD the last 3 years and we've been to visit him on base. I think some of the lower ranks may have to stay on the ship until something opens up but right now the goal of the Navy is to have EVERY Sailor off the ships where they are on shore duty.

Deb - my son lives on his ship in SD, he was told once he returns from his first deployment he can put in for base housing. He doesn't mind living on the ship, but I know he will be happy when he can sleep in a real bed everyday.

Deb, does your Sailor know if he ranks 1st in his "A"/"C" school, he gets first choice of orders?

My son wasn't #1 but he still got his pick...so I guess it depends on how many openings and how many are in your class.

Oh you're so lucky to have S. home! Glad to hear the car issue is resolved at least for awhile. Sorry about the tat, but you know how Sailors are.

While my son was at ASW he phased up very quickly. He spent the weekend with us at our hotel on Shelter Island many times. Matt would trade with someone if he had watch. And I stayed at the Navy Lodge on ASW a few times also.

Melanie, as far as I heard our Sailors do not get leave between boot camp and "A" school. We have a Great Lakes "A" school instructor on this site and Hoppie has said that several times.

Donna: My Matt wanted SD so bad!! And of course he got VA. McFaul is a destroyer I think. You can join the Destroyer group and the Norfolk group. Matt doesn't complain to much about Norfolk. He'd never been to the east coast before.
So few of our sonar tech's go anywhere but VA. I guess since there are more destroyers there than anywhere else....it sorta makes sense.

Does your son know he has to submit a chit for leave? Are you very far from GL? There may be exceptions to that rule if you live close to GL. Either way, he'll get an answer once he submits his chit.

Melanie: He'll probably get leave between A and C schools.

Melanie and Donna, I'm glad your sailors got their orders!!

I attended my son's "A" school graduation and was the only "guest" there. It's VERY low key.
