good morning! or should i say afternoon... I have been so busy playing catch up since PIR- got all the decorations up now awaiting nikki to come home for a week for Christmas :) A school starts 12/10. I was going to buy her a camera for christmas and her brother was going to get her a digital picture frame - is this a good idea?
  • ladypinkhatter

Blondie...does she skype from her personal laptop? My daughter has Skype capability on her cell phone but she was going to suspend her cell phone service while she's at sea. It sounds like she will need some kind of internet access for this??
  • lindalav

I have already asked for a webcam for christmas so santa better come through! LOL I will have nikki install skype for me since she is already familiar with it- Thanks for the advice- i am taking her with me to pick out the camera- she will get what she wants - already has one in mind but i cant remember which one;) I thought the digital frame would be cool- thanks again!
  • ladypinkhatter

Blondie and Jean- thank you. That helps a lot. So I need to prepare myself that I may not hear from her for months and when I do it will probably be by regular e-mail and if I am realllly blessed...a ship to shore call...right? Thanks Ladies (give yourselves hugs from me :)) Have a great day.

Lindalav- all kids are familiar with any kind of technology....lol. Hope "Santa" brings you that webcam :-)
  • Oneofalot

Yes, consider yourself hugged back from me also. Yes, She should be able to Email you when she is off. My daughter usually works 14 to 18 hours while they are under way. So I don't hear much from her until she gets shore leave. Then she is tired and wants rest.
  • Anna

When my son was deployed both times, he could only call when they made port calls. He would have overseas phone cards and use those to call home. Ship phones cannot be used for outgoing calls except for emergencies or once in a blue moon. But I got emails just about everyday and that was fine with me. Just to know he was safe and still there!!! He told me after the cruise how he almost got blown off the flight deck once, so I always looked for emails to know he was still onboard!!!!!!!!
  • AndreaS61

Thanks, Ladies, for the wonderful gift ideas. My sister wanted to Skype with my daughter but doesn't have a webcam built into her laptop. I think I know what to get her for Christmas now. I got my daughter a fuzzy blanket and slippers for Christmas. She's in A-School in Great Lakes and said her blanket is wool and scratchy and her feet are always cold. Have a wonderful rest of the day y'all.
  • Nanette

my daughter has 103 days before she ships to bc. I understand there are gift cards you can get for the PX? does anyone know how to go about obtaining them and how much cash or gift card$ should she have with her. I know only the clothes on her back basically since they have to purchase everything there and it comes out of their pay check, therefore I want to send her with cash or card. Any advice?
  • AndreaS61

Nanette - Send your daughter off with an activated phone card, small address book with addresses and telephone numbers in it, a book of stamps, and about $20 cash. My daughter also took her bank debit card and was able to use it in the NEX. I know you can get NEX gift cards, but I don't know how you go about it. I'm sure someone does, though. I also had my daughter give me power of attorney for financial and healthcare in case I needed to make decisions or get records while she's serving.
  • Anna

    Nanette,
As far as all her uniform stuff that is directly taken from her paycheck. She never sees the money!! The only other purchases are for little things like shampoo, soap, stuff like that. And they don't always even get to go to the NEX. As a unit they have to earn those privledges. So she won't need alot of money. I think someone said they ordered NEX cards online.
  • Oneofalot

    Good Morning to Everyone
  • Oneofalot

Navymom, thanks for all the info. This will my daughters first deployment and I will feel a little better knowing this info.
  • ladypinkhatter

Yes, thank you all for the information. Unfortunately, I got a text this am. Sailor was suppose to come home today before deployment but they put her on hold because she went to the doctor's a couple of days ago for cold, bcp refill, etc. and don't know what's happening now. Praying that they release the hold soon and she gets to come home.

How do I find out who the omsbudman is?
  • ladypinkhatter

Nanette- You can order gift cards online through NEX. You can customized and they will even deliver it to her but I would hold off on that. I agree with the ladies. Stamps, phone book, about $20 should be all she needs for a few weeks. My sailor didn't get privileges to NEX until about 5-6 weeks into bc (right before they took pictures) and even then she had debit card and they gave her a NEX card to use to deduct expenses from her paycheck.
  • ladypinkhatter

Good news!! Just got text...THEY RELEASED HER!! Yeah!! (happy dancing again..lol)
  • Oneofalot

My daughter did not even need money until after BC. They pretty much gave them everything they needed. When they did get privileges to the NEX it was like Lady pinkhatter said 5 or 6 week and they had a paycheck by then.
  • ladypinkhatter

Thanks NavyMom. I did tell her it will probably be like the first few weeks of bootcamp where we didn't have any contact...except it will probably longer than it was in bc. I will try to prepare her for that..and will reassure her that I will write and/or email as often as possible.

I am preparing myself that if I don't hear anything from her for a while that "no news is good news" and give it to God. :-)
  • Oneofalot

    Good Morning to Everyone.

  • AndreaS61

Good morning, Ladies! Finally Friday! This has been a hard week for me. First we found out my daughter's cat has cancer - they give him 45-60 days. :( My daughter in Great Lakes had strep and was SIQ the first part of the week and was delayed in INDOC and my younger daughter was home with school with an ear infection. Last night I asked my Navy daughter if she had gotten her Christmas leave approved and she said she hadn't turned in her form yet. She has to have it in today. So, being a mother, I told her to not forget because it would be sad if she didn't get leave. Her response was that she's a big girl and doesn't need me "checking up on her". I know she's just asserting her independence, but it stung a little. So, I'm kind of sad today. Just got back from Starbucks and got a venti latte - that should help chase away the blues.

  • Oneofalot

I am so sorry for your bad week Adrea. I will pray that it gets better. I lost our 3 cats this year. It is a hard thing to go through. I hope and pray that your family get all well and feels better really soon. Like today!!! LOL. If I drank coffee I would be right there with you at Starbucks.

  • Anna

Did I hear we are going on a Starbucks run??!!!  Count me in!!!

    Andrea,

Hope that drink chases those blues away!!  Many of us get them this time of the year.  I always get so bummed when I see these commercials of families coming together and having fun!!  Or those crazy coffee commercials when the son comes home - makes me tear up every time!!!!  Oh and I get that "Mom, I can take care of it" also!!!  They think we can just turn that Mom role on and off whenever we want!!!!

Happy Friday to everyone.  Hope everyone has a nice weekend.  Hubby and I want to go pick up a tree tomorrow but they are predicting a foot of snow tonight and tomorrow and telling people not to go out if they don't have to!!!  Except for a few outside decorations a tree is the only other Christmas decoration we'll have.  I sure hope we can get out early enough tomorrow to get one.

    Jean,

How are you doing these days?  Did you get the results of your tests on your shoulder yet?  Is it getting any better for you??

    Blondie,

Sailor Jenn says she's getting snow this weekend also!  Is it hitting you as well.  Did you hear on the news about the stolen dumptruck and all the damage that was done to cars on the road.  Jenn drove through the one intersection just moments after it happened.  She lives right off that main street - scary stuff!!!

  • Anna

    NavyMom,

That's what I hear!!!  Should I go shopping tomorrow and make plans to hibernate in our apartment for awhile????

  • Brigitte

Just wanted to say "hi"....my oldest daughter is on her second week of BC.  I still haven't gotten the form letter or any other type of mail but I am confident she is okay.  I look forward to learning from your experiences.  :o)

  • Anna

    NavyMom,

Will she be able to let you know when she's on the plane and just before taking off?  If so, then you should be able to check out the airport online and make sure flights are still landing on time.  I guess one thing about this part of the country is they know how to clear off this snow quick enough.  As long as there isn't a blizzard - planes might not be able to get through that!!!!  Keeping XX in my prayers for a safe arrival home.  And drive carefully!!!

    gitti,

Good to see you here!!!  So have you received your kid in the box yet??  Also the recruiter should be able to get you the address.  Don't be surprised if you don't receive any letters for close to three weeks.  Each division is different so your sailor might not be able to write a letter.  If you have any questions just let us know and we will certainly be here to help you!!

  • SDPam

Blizzard for us today = no mail.  Daughter is in her third week of bootcamp.   Maybe a letter next week :-)

  • DC - G'mother of My Fav Sailor

Blondie, we will just keep positive thoughts that there will be perfect weather for you to head off to Japan.

Navy Mom, glad your daughter is home.  Enjoy!

  • proudksmom

Hi,  My daughter arrived at P-Cola this week for aircrew, does anyone else have a daughter going through the training or that has?  She said there are only 11 girls!

  • ladypinkhatter

Hi Ladies...hope all is well. Sailor came home Thurs. night and I am still waiting for her to clean her room...lol. I told her that if I have to clean it, I am moving my treadmill, bike, golf clubs, etc. in there...lol. I'm sure she will because she hasn't even gone in there herself...lol. Hung out with her today at base in SD then went to a movie (just like old times except the trip to the base use to be the mall...lol).

    Take care of yourselves...be safe.

Gitti and SdPam- hope you hear from your recruits soon

    NavyMom- have fun and enjoy

    Proudksmom- welcome to the group.

I was decorating the house and decided to put a tree up in my daughters room I decorated it all in navy decorations. I turned pretty cute she is going to call me crazy lol.

  • lindalav

Hello all been so busy getting ready for Christmas I havent been on much- welcome to the new moms and we feel your pain!   My daughter just PIRed 11/24 and it was probably the longest 3 months of my life.  Yes I said 3 months since she got hurt in the middle and was on medical hold for a month.  Anyways she is doing well and loving the navy life. started school finally 12/10 and is now hating snow. LOL. Last weekend was spent decorating and taking pics and texting her every time i turned around.  I am so glad she has her cell now.  New moms keep writing and sending those letters that is their lifeline!  Ladypinkhatter I am so glad your spending time with your sailor and looking forward to spending a week with Nikki over Christmas~  Good luck to all and stay safe and warm -- I do have one question ... what happened to global warming?????

  • MandE'smom(Hi, I'm Mary)

    Good Morning, Moms!! :)

Just dropping in for a quick Hello!  I hope all of you are keeping warm.  I know many of you are in the northern areas where it is very cold and are being slammed with bad weather.  My prayers are with you.  We are chilly today...but I am worried about tomorrow.  We are in the 20's with the wind chill. (so much for my plants and my winter garden)..and Floridians just dont know how to deal with that stuff.  I am worried about our homeless population.

It was a busy weekend.  We had a scouting event on Friday and Saturday and my little scout had a great time.  We also managed to ship off 6 boxes on Saturday for Molly's adopt a sailor project! Yippee!!

The biggest news however...my wonderful Daughter is coming home on Saturday!  Woo Hoo!!

  • Oneofalot

    Good Morning to Everyone.

  • Oneofalot

I am on count down. My daughter will be here in 10 days and counting.

  • MandE'smom(Hi, I'm Mary)

Thanks Blondie!  :)  I am already saying prayers for your safe and wonderful trip!

  • Oneofalot

I could see why, Blondie. I do hope your trip is wonderful and I am eager to hear about it.

  • Oneofalot

Send me the snow. I will take it. I miss that stuff.

  • Oneofalot

I wish it would. All we have been getting RAIN. and Lots of it. Like 2 inches an hour. We are thinking about building an Ark for the floods are coming. lol

  • Oneofalot

No, I don't think so. Yes, I am really use to the rain but not so hard. We usually get rain but not by the buckets full. You walk outside to go you your car and you are really wet. Change of cloths in the car. LOL. I hope it clears up for you soon or at least enough for you to not to have to worry about getting to the airport. Is Japans weather any better?

  • Oneofalot

That is really cold. I want your snow but not the cold.

  • Oneofalot

I can't take it with 30 degree weather. I didn't like it when it get that cold. Our house is only heated with space heaters because our heater is broke, it broke 2 years ago and it cost more to fix then our house was to buy. lol

  • Oneofalot

Maybe I will have to do that. I will plan on that next year. Hows that. It will take that long to save up for it.

  • DC - G'mother of My Fav Sailor

Jean, getting snow, especially snow that will last, without cold is a neat trick ... perhaps on a movie set.

Blondie, it has been raining since yesterday afternoon and we had high winds all night.  The winds have let up but the rain hasn't.  Thank goodness we do not have low temperatures like we did last year.  That would make the roads unbelievably treacherous.  Unfortunately, temperatures may go below freezing tonight which means black ice.  If so, I don't go to swim class.  As I told someone today, I don't do snow or ice .... in terms of driving.  I have done it but avoid it now that I am not working.

I am keeping good weather in my prayers for you, Blondie.  I pray for a safe pleasant flight, completely uneventful until you hug your sailor.  Now that's an event!

  • Oneofalot

That is true. I would visit my sailor while I was out and about. Chances are she will be near there anyway. She will be going to A school in GL. If they let her have what she wants. EOD.

  • Oneofalot

DC, I know it wouldn't happen if we don't get cold first. We the news starts to talk about the weather coming from Canada then we will have snow. I just wish I could have some of your guys. I see pictures on the News and it looks like fun.

  • Anna

I'm so happy to hear about all of you moms that are having your sailors home now or very soon!!!!  Enjoy every precious moment you get to spend with them.

I have had to shovel way more snow than I care to think of.  It's not so much the amount that is coming from the sky but with winds up to 50 mph this weekend, we have some drifts over 4' high.  I laughed beause in the back of our apartment we actually can see patches of grass, but in the front we can't see where the steps are!!!  We have to shovel our steps and around our cars and it's impossible to keep up!!

  • Oneofalot

    Good Morning to Everyone.

That sounds like a good idea, Blondie. If you are stuck with her brats then a bubble bath will unstress you.

  • MandE'smom(Hi, I'm Mary)

    Good Morning Guys!  Stay warm!

  • Oneofalot

    Good Morning to Everyone.

I am so glad you are really ready to go Blondie. Even with doctors approval.YEAH!!!! Have a wonderful trip and say HI to your daughter for me. I will pray the weather comes here for you. I could use some of that white stuff. I will even take the tempature to get it. HA, HA.

  • Oneofalot

That is so cool. Enjoy your trip. A week from now I will have my daughter home for a week. YEAH!!!

  • Oneofalot

No, I would like her to see snow. She will be away for awhile and not have rain or snow. California never gets snow other then in the Mountains. That was were she was last weekend. So Maybe your are right. I can wait until she is here. Yes, we can both be doing the happy dance. YEAH!
