We try and put up our tree around the 1st of Dec. so it is up for awhile. We did not do that this year. Since my son is not living at home we kept things up until New Years Eve. I had the day off and it was the only day that would work.
Yes, moving many times makes you weed out unnecessary junk!! But here's my dilimma and I'd like some other moms opinion. Over the past several years I have tossed out all kinds of "stuff" that I've collected over the years. I got rid of all our nice furniture except for one secretary desk that Jenn has in her apartment. The only things I have a hard time parting with is several plastic bins of our Christmas decorations. Now many of them are porcelain and ceramic decorations that hubby's grandmother made, and other items which have been gifts to me over the years. Hubby says I have to get rid of the decorations because when Jenn leaves for OCS we will have to empty her apartment and he doesn't want to store these items. He wants to give Grandma's pieces to the kids. The problem is I just get tired of throwing out all our family history and memories. And I had a large train city that I built by myself over the years. I know we can't haul all these decorations around with us, but this Christmas I really, really missed my Christmas memories and reminders of family and friends throughout my life. I sometimes do get very resentful (and very sad) that I have to keep throwing out things that have meaning to me. I gave up having a "home", nice furniture, pictures on the wall, books, firends, family - - you name it!!! And hubby wants to get rid of more because it is too much to keep packing up and moving around!!! On the one hand, it is nice being able to go live in a different part of the country, but on the other hand I feel so isolated and I always feel like it's just one temporary place after another but it's not HOME!!!! Am I'm too attached to things and just need to get over it, or would other moms feel the same way I do????
Oh, Anna, I am the wrong person to ask that question. We have one ornament that my husband says is ugly ... he's probably right ... but it would break my heart to give up. It has been in the family since my grandfather, at least. I still have ornaments from our first Christmas. Personally, I sometimes think that the treasured momentos are what turn a house/apartment into a home. I would fight to keep them.
When my mom first got married, she was terribly homesick and g'dad sent her a picture that had been given to him and my grandmother for a wedding present. Now this was a print of Psyche in the Bath with an incredibly ugly redwood frame. For mom, it was home and she loved it. Dad was in the Navy and when we arrived at a new home, the first thing that was hung on the wall was Psyche. She had a maid once who looked at it and announced that "Fishie wasn't decent!" So from that time on "Fishie" had a special place for us, usually not visible to the general public.
My oldest brother got Fishie but she was not displayed anywhere so my youngest brother "stole" her. He was going to take her around and take pictures of her visiting places, kind of like a Flat Stanley. You cannot imagine the uproar that caused. Fishie was returned to her rightful owner and my youngest brother and wife purchased a print to put in their exercise room. Of value ... NO but a memory, you bet.
I left all my pictures with Jenn - they are all hanging on her walls. Each one of them has a story or a meaning to them and I know I'll have to get rid of them when we have to close out Jenn's apartment in a year. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with the boxes of pictures that go back to when I left home and joined the Navy!!
Well everything is packed and stacked. Hubby picks up UHaul truck tomorrow morning and we have helpers coming to load the truck. I'll be cleaning the apartment and then we have a hotel for tomorrow night. Wednesday we have our final walk through at 8:30 and then two days of driving to get to Jeff's in PA.
Still no job offers so we can sure use prayers for a job for hubby. I'm looking forward to visiting with son and dil and they are close to Jenn so I'll get to see her a few times as well. But don't want to have to stay there too long - - - - don't want another long stretch of unemployment!!!!
Will talk to everyone again when we get settled at son's place!!!!
Good luck Anna! Safe trip and hope you can get settled. My hubby has been out of work since 2009 so I do understand. I am also getting a bit nervous since there is not much out there here in FL for work. Talked to my girl yesterday she was not in the best of moods - tired of being put on hold -- dentist appt then hold then another then hold. Feels like shes never going to finish A school. Like I told her hey you are getting free dental work and paid for the time- the work she has had done would have cost me with good dental insurance 2000 dollars easy not counting the weekly deduction and loss of time from work. I know shes just getting frustrated cause she hates the hold thing. I texted her today and said hope your having a better day and she replied she is. Like I told her no matter what theres a good and bad and you have to look at the good, forget the bad. She sent me a picture text they had 4-6 inches of snow and it looked so pretty. She has one more dentist appointment and then shouldnt have anymore interruptions. Hasnt gotten orders yet and that is also frustrating for her since she doesnt know where she will be headed to after A school. Is this normal? I told her the navy motto should be hurry up and wait and she did laugh...
My daughter heads to BC on Feb. 14th...Valentines Day. Looking to see if anyone has a daughter going in around this time. She is headed into IT if all goes well. I know she is sitting on ready to head out. She left for MEPS on Jan 6th and called on the 7th to tell her dad and I and she was offered IT and would be leaving on the 14th of Feb. That was a lot sooner than what I ever expected. Her dad was in the USN but that was back in the 80's and a lot has changed. We are so excited for her and hope all goes well for her. Our oldest daughter is away at college in her last semester of Nursing School and my husband works rotating 12 hour shifts. With our youngest headed into BC I am going to be alone a good bit of the time. I keep telling myself she will be fine and so will I. Now with the days ticking off faster and faster I'm not sure how I'm gonna handle the day she leaves for BC. I cried a good bit with our oldest headed to college and I could talk to her on a regular basis. I won't be able to talk to our youngest and have her check in or vice versa. I know she will be fine...guess I'm worried more about keeping it all together once she is gone. If anyone would like to keep in touch or has any pointers it would be greatly appreciated. Just wanting someone going through the same thing to chat with and to help take my mind off of her leaving and being gone. Praying all goes well for our daughter. =^.^=
NavyBamaMom -- My daughter and I made a list of all we wanted to do together or accomplish before she shipped out on 12/06/2010. We shopped, had an early Christmas (she and her brother actually started decorating for Christmas the day after HALLOWEEN, if you can believe that!), had family times and dinners with friends before she left. Yes, it is very hard with this being her first time away from home (the three of us are a very close family!) and having no contact except for letters, but we are now over half way through BC and looking forward to graduation! We're on the home stretch, and I'm looking forward to her being able to have her cell phone once again when she gets to her A-School! Hang in there ... you have a great support here on N4Ms ... once your daughter sends you her date for PIR, look for a group to start up on here ... they will be your lifeline! You can put pieces of the puzzle together on what's going on in there by everyone sharing about what their SR is writing about or talked about on their phone call home (which, by the way, comes about 3-4 wks out, so be sure you coordinate with your daughter which number to call you on and then keep your phone with you!). ;o) All the best to you and your daughter! Oh yeah ... One bit of advice ... get the hair cut before leaving for BC! We did and my daughter keeps thanking me for it over and over ... ;o)
NavyBamaMom - Definitely get the haircut before BC. My daughter didn't and they Navy literally chopped her hair off below her ponytail. It was a mess!!! Enjoy your time with her now. They grow up fast in BC. My daughter put me on her bank account and signed power of attorney for financial and healthcare just in case she needed anything and was sequestered in BC. Remind her over and over how proud of her you are and how you'll be with her every step of the way. Lastly, this is a great group. We've all gone through this with our little girls. It's a great place to laugh, cry, vent, share and celebrate. We'll be right here with ya!!
Blondie - So sorry about your bad morning. I hope the rest of your day goes (went) better. Things are crazy here in Seattle too. We got about 3" of snow last night but by the time I left for work at 6:30am it was raining. The 5-day forecast is for rain. So what do the schools do? Close for the day. I drive to the transit center and then catch a bus to work. On the way, I had a guy run a stop sign and then throw his hands in the air like he couldn't stop. Why? The roads were bare and wet other than some slush between lanes. If you're that scared to drive stay home!! I got to the transit center without a problem and to the bus stop in plenty of time. As the bus pulled up to the curb it hit the slush at the curb and sprayed me from the waist down. Luckily I have a long coat, but geez! Then, I got to work and several other legal assistants stayed home. Because of the snow? Because their kids are home? Who knows?? So there are four legal assistants to cover 30 attorneys. It's not like we got a foot of snow or had any ice. It's like 45 degrees and raining.
navy bama mom- my daughter said no to a cute hair cut cause her friends told her even if you cut they will still chop it so the day after graduation she got herself all fixed up- she didnt want me spending money on her hair for them to chop it anyways. remember boot camp messes with their heads enough- she did chop 8-10 inches off and was shoulder length when she went in but as far as cutting shorter she said she would wait and let them do it since they would do it anyways.
Blondie- sorry you had such a horrible day! I think florida is the only state with no snow and if it did snow they would have to close everything down people here dont know how to drive in the rain let alone snow or ice lol
My sister in law on Long Island got 14 inches last night so she was off today - they cancelled school last night knowing how bad it would be...
NavyBamaMom and Lindalav ... we made sure her hair was cut above the collar, to make sure they wouldn't touch it at BC. It worked! They did not cut it when she arrived, and because it was short enough after 4 weeks, they did not cut it at the mid-way point of BC! Maybe we were just one of the lucky ones?! But, she is still thanking me for having it cut short before going in ... said the other girls are pretty envious and wish they would have done the same.
Hi Ladies! My 22 year old daughter just left for BC on the 5th. After several years in collage and a little travel, she decided that she would join the Navy. I am very proud of her. I have no heard from her yet, but know that she is safe where she is (and hopefully warm). I'm in Houston so it's cold here, but NO snow! I look forward to reading your posts and getting all the info and encouragement I can! Have a good evening all.
Good morning all. So glad the snow here in Seattle is gone. Welcome Michemom! This is the hard part. It will get better once you have communication. Join the PIR group. Jean - I hope you're feeling better today. Blondie - I too will be praying for the families. Have a good day, Ladies. It's almost Friday!!
I am feeling much better today. I like the snow. It is really pretty until the trucks come out and make it dirty gray. Then I will agree that it needs to go. But yesterday it was so pretty. Messy but pretty.
I am feeling better. I think I have a ear infection that is why I have not been feeling well. I will be going to the doctor on Monday if my ear still hurts and I am still dizzy. Other wise how is everyone?
SDPam, if her RDC is as bad as my daughters, don't give it to her mail it to her. They searched all the girls when they came in every night and threaten them that if they found anything on them that they would not be able to have liberty the next day.
Yes the RDC know but he wanted to be a butt head any way. lol. No I did not know about all though thing to help. I will have to try. I hope green tea doesn't do what it did to my mother in law. It caused her hot flashes to get worse. But I am will to try anything at this point. I am not sure the doctors office will be open on Monday. I better check. I just wanted to make sure I need to go. While worse comes to worse I will have to wait another day.
SDPamS - I know there is a storage place close to the base but I'm not sure of the name of it. Sorry. There's also a bowling alley nearby where you can rent a locker. I'll try to find the name of these places for you.
Jean - So sorry about your ears. There's so much stuff going around right now. Probably sinus-related. I hope you feel better soon.
Janie ... my daughter's PIR is Feb. 4th, too! ;o) Cannot wait!!! ;o) She's DIV 911. Have you been over to our PIR group yet? We have a discussion for your ship/div started over there! If you haven't already, please pop on over and become a member of this group, meet other families in your daughter's division, and share with the other families with graduates on 02/04/2011!
I'm working today too. I'm a legal assistant. The courts and all government offices are closed. Our legal messenger service is closed. Even most of the delis nearby are closed. But we're working. Go figure? Several people have called in "sick" today which really irritates me. Oh, well. I'm glad to have a job.
Hello Moms!! Well hubby and I safely made it to our son and dil's place in PA. Two day trip and 775 miles with no one but a cranky cat to keep me company. Hubby was driving the UHaul with my car on a trailer behind him, and I drove his jeep. We got all our stuff unpacked in a storage unit except for a few clothes and toiletries. Still no new job yet so we can still use some help in the prayer department!!!! Hubby's making lots of contacts but no one is offering a job yet.
Lindalav,
Don't know how you could possibly survive without a job since 2009 for your hubby!! I will add him to my prayer list that something comes through for him as well!! What kind of work does he do?
Ms Ampi,
Love the pic you posted!!!
To everyone else - - can't catch up with everyone now - - too many pages!! But loved reading all the posts here. I hope I caught all our new moms to give you a welcome message!! So glad you are here - - looking forward to getting to know you!!!
I hate winter too and our winters here in the Seattle area aren't even that bad. I just look forward to the day that I can retire somewhere warm and tropical and live out my life in shorts, tank tops and bare feet. I just have to find that sugardaddy!! LOL
Andrea, then we will complain about the sun. I am use to the rain. Living here all my life you sort of get use to it. I just don't like not seeing daylight in the winter. I go to work early and come home late. Yuck.
We got the ice and freezing rain also. But it has warmed up a bit today so once the ice on the roads melted we took our cars to a spray car wash to get all the salt off them. Traveling behind the UHaul my car got so covered in salt spray I couldn't even see out the windows when I got in it to drive down the road. I had to put the windows down to see if anyone was coming from the side!!!!! At least while I'm here at my son's, my car gets to sit in the garage out of the way!!!!
Jean and Andrea,
I understand so well the dark and dreary you guys get in WA. I was checking on the map one day and Marquette, MI is one degree latitude south of Silverdale, WA where my daughter is. And I guess because we were right on the shores of Superior it was constantly grey clouds, cold and dreary!!! I missed the sunshine!!!!!! Andrea, I hope you find that sugar daddy!!!!!!
I know, Jean. I was born and raised in the Seattle area and it still amazes me how people here complain about the weather all year long. They hate the rain, snow, sleet, ice, wind, cold, fog and grey days. And then the weather finally warms up and they complain about it being too hot. My daughter has been in GL since the first week of October and is getting really tired of the snow, wind and frigid temps. I guess no place is perfect - except maybe Hawaii. Scratch that - cockroaches. Blah!!
LOL, Andrea. I agree. No one seems to be happy with what the weather does here. My daughters ship is slated to come up here next January or so and she is psyching people out about our weather. She love doing that because they all like the SD weather and don't want to have to worry about our weather. I think it is really funny.
Anna he is in construction- heavy equipment actually. His unemployment is about to run out so i am getting pretty nervous. Hes 52 and its not easy here in florida
I understand - it's not that great all over. My hubby's 62 and it just gets harder and harder. Only he doesn't ever get unemployment because he is a considered self employed so no benefits, nothing. No work - no pay!!!
That would be hard. My husband is a union carpenter and there are over 300+ people out of work here. Construction trade is a really hard trade to be in right now. No one wants to build. I know he will be working until April. Then it will be up to his company that he works for to keep him working. I will pray that you all get jobs.
Hello! I just found this group! My daughter left for GL on 1/4/11 and her PIR is 3/4/11. She is going to be an AO and her A School will be in Pensacola. She will be 20 in March. Did a year and a half of college and decided she was burned out of college and needed something to do. She is looking forward to the Navy paying the rest of her schooling eventually.
I received her form letter last week and the note on the bottom was pretty negative, basically not liking it at all, very homesick, doesn't think she will make graduation. She was having a lot of doubts and questioning her decision the weeks leading up to her going in, so I'm just really being hard on myself for encouraging the Navy. I'm hoping she didn't back out last minute because of not wanting to disappoint anyone.
Needless to say, it's been a really rough couple of weeks. I can't stop worrying about her and how she is getting on. She was high end of what she could be for her weight, so I hope she isn't getting picked on too much for that, but I'm sure she will need to since she will need to lose the weight to graduate.
Sorry so long. Just needed to vent. Husband just doesn't get the heartache and that how ever much grown she is, she's still my little girl.
meg m- write her every day and encourage her - this is so normal! I never thought my daughter would make it and she has so tell her she has you and all the navy moms behind her to support her and pray for her! She can do this and you have to be the one to tell her that. You will be her lifeline and her support so dont waver and worry is to be kept to yourself and on here - when you get a call stay positive and upbeat and cry after the call is over... Good luck to you and your girl!
I'm glad you found us - thank you for sharing!! Do not be too surprised about the negative comments and the expression of wanting to give up. So many times our girls will tell us how everything is wrong and they made a big mistake. But then as things start to come together for them and their shipmates they begin to feel much more positive. But also keep in mind, that if she really doesn't feel the Navy is a good fit, there is nothing wrong with that either. It isn't for everyone!!! But I hope she does well and gets through the adjustment period sucessfully. In the meantime, us moms are left worrying and that is why you come here and talk to us!!!!

I made a date mistake... She left for GL on Monday, 1/3/11, but PIR is right - 3/4/11.

MegM,
I'm glad you found us - thank you for sharing!!
