Marie, he works on base, lives off base.
  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

Karen J, my husband is on the Bush. I cried like a baby Tuesday morning when I had to drop him off... He had duty Tuesday :P
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Aww Janae, hope you're doing better this week!

Michelle, I have some thoughts for you, sending a PM/friend request.  BTW I've done the car shipping thing between California & Hawaii, lived on Oahu (Hawaii Kai) for two years.  Good ol' Matson :)

  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

Thanx Marcy. I am doing better. He doesn't want me to be sad so I'm trying my best to be happy and strong for him.
  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

Before deployment, we had an apartment in Hampton and we got it from rent.com. If you find the apartment you want off of the website you can tell them and they will send you a 100 dollar visa gift card just for renting through them and the apartment we had gave us great discounts on rent every month. I highly recommend it.

My daughter just got her orders and she is asigned to the USS Arleigh Burke. I live in Wyoming and have never been to the east coast, so I have a lot of general questions about Norfolk area and how to find general info about the Arleigh Burke.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

    Mari, here's their website: http://www.public.navy.mil/usff/ddg51/Pages/default.aspx

Also, go this group to find her ombudsman - http://www.navyformoms.com/group/whatsanombudsmanandhowtocontactthem - just ask "A Sailor's Mom" and she'll help you out, or read how to DIY in the Discussions.  Then ask the Ombudsman for contact info for the Family Readiness Group (FRO).

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

and Welcome to the group!!  btw you can also search Facebook for pages on the ship.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/USS-Arleigh-Burke-DDG-51/12659690739...

Wow Becky, that's a lot to be proud of!  Plus a washing machine??  Geez!  I lived in a walk up a long time ago, 5th fl in Boston but it was a sublet and furnished thank heaven!  It definitely affects what you buy at the grocery store when you have to think about hauling it home  :)
  • Jess_0411

Haha, my husband and I just moved into a third floor apartment in Hampton. In Jacksonville, we lived in one on the first floor, so to make multiple trips out to the car for grocerys was whatever. But when I went grocery shopping for the first time a few weeks ago, wow! The good thing is that you get quiet the workout everyday (:
  • Jess_0411

The Township right off of Marcella (:
  • Jess_0411

The Eisenhower. The Township is awesome! We love it so far. And its within walking distance of everything.
  • Jess_0411

Aw, yes I'll for sure give her a call! I'm trying to make friends right now as well. What ship is she on?
  • Jess_0411

Me me me! My husband and I are 24 and just got married April 2nd. I'm working on making new girlfriends here in Norfolk. I was in a sorority all through college and I have gotten so used to that support system from having girlfriends that I now have no clue what to do with myself! But we just had a bunch of new sailors over tonight and I got to cook some dinner (smotherd enchiladas. Yum!) and hang out. But it was all boys and I was SO bored! So for real, pass me any info and I will make the calls/texts. Promise (:
  • navywife17

Hey MTsWife- which one are you guys going to be living in?

  • navywife17

How long did it take for you guys got in?
  • navywife17

Tricia- As long as he has the registration up to date and insurance on it he should be good. He can go in and ask what else he would need to do or just get a temp pass for it, thats what we did when we had our rental.
  • navywife17

also if its registered in VA make sure he has the state inspection pink slip to they ask for it.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Was just going to say the same thing :) It's on one of the base websites. Easy to type up & take to your bank for notarization; and probably smart to keep in the glovebox.
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

yea, with just the registration and insurance he will not be able to get stickers.  when my daughter had my car they wouldn't let her get stickers
  • rareis13

The hotels around New Town Road are good. The hotels around Town Center are also good.  There maybe some hotels on VA Beach Blvd too.  I can't remember. Since we've been staying iwth my son, I don't pay close attention to the hotel locations when we are up there.  My brother has stayed on VA Beach a couple of times when visiting his son.  Newport News is about 23 miles north of Norfolk. I've stayed in the hotel at the conference center that was nice.  The Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas run together.  The street signs change color. One area is blue and the other area is green.

Donna B- hey my hubby and I stayed at the super 8 last august, it is not in the best neighborhood and the rooms werent the cleanest. only reason we stayed was cause everything else was booked due to the ships coming home. But yes, look around cause most of newport news is not the place to be specially at night. You can ask your son to check you in to a navy lodge they book 60 days in advance and are great with prices, just a heads up that if there are any homecomings they will be full.

Anybody know how a military e-mail works? Can anybody e-mail, family friends is it restricted in anyway? Just got an address from my son that is overseas and he wants me to post it on Facebook so that all his friends can send him a note. Just wondering ;)
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

G's Mom, I think they can only access it from military computers.  I'd ask your recruiters what their 'take' on it is.  I would think it best to limit his military email address to official stuff and use a gmail account for personal correspondence...

  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

Anyone know if our Navy men/women can use phone cards somewhere in the foreign ports?

Concerning Jedi: if he hasn't found a home yet, they could check about local boxer and collie rescue groups who may be able to foster Jedi until a home is found.

I came across these, with lots of good stuff :)

When my husband was deployed, my family, his family, and I communicated with him via military e-mail. You can send photos, just keep it PG. You never know who is looking at the e-mails, Also, don't expect them to go into great detail about where they are or what they're doing, especially if they are in a hazardous duty area. That's a huge no-no.

Has anyone stayed at the Navy Lodge Norfolk and had a room with a kitchen?  I am having difficulty finding out if the kitchenette has an oven or just a stovetop.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Maryann, I haven't stayed there but - in April this year I was visiting my son's condo, I stopped at the Navy Lodge, toured the rooms, got info and took pictures; here's the link to the Discussion: Navy Lodge Norfolk info, rates and photos.  Read CShore7222's comments there too, she said that despite having a two-burner stove, there was nothing to cook in, plan accordingly!  :)  There is a free continental breakfast served every morning, and coffee & tea 24/7.

The double rooms (two queen beds) and family suites have a range (stovetop + oven) and microwave plus fridge.  The single rooms (one queen bed) only have a microwave and small fridge. To speak to them, the direct number to Navy Lodge Norfolk is 757-489-2656.

Here's something to be aware of - Gossip Shuts Down USS Bataan's Facebook Page (NavyTimes.com)

"Loose tweets sink fleets, and as sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship Bataan learned, unchecked gossip can bring down a command’s Facebook page.  The Bataan’s page was shut down May 15, severing a major communication line to sailors’ families as the Norfolk, Va.-based ship continues its deployment in the Mediterranean. A page for at least one other ship may also be removed, as well."

  • Jenacfs

Hello everyone, i am new to this forum. My hubby just got his orders to Norfolk. I am in a panic trying to find a renal property in a good family neighborhood. Any idea where to look for a place. I have a four year old and one on the way. Any advise would help. Thank you!!
  • Jess_0411

Pat: It depends on if they have someone to replace him or not. When my husband's ship has been deployed, and someone discharges, they fly them home. However, if the Navy has no one to replace him, they can extend him. But seeing how the Navy is "over manned" right now, I don't really see replacing him being an issue.
  • Lorraine:Proud Mom a Nuke MM ELT

My son just found out that he is being assigned to the USS Boise in Norfolk. He is a Nuke MM just finishing up ELT school in Ballston Spa, NY. Hope to learn from all your experiences :0)
  • CaliMom (Maryann)

Connie & Pat- maybe it is a guy thing, but my son is the same way.  Not much on the details.
  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

Martha, Pat, Connie, etc My son is the same. He talked alot when he was little, but not since...about anything! However, when I visited him before his recent/1st deployment and he took me a tour of his ship, he talked more about his ship then all words put together for the last15 yrs I think! LOL I was so amazed, in awe and proud. I wish I had an audio tape to play it back just to hear him talk! I am very thankful for this forum where I can at least ask some of my questions to spare Chris!
  • duhhuh58 Ship 10/Div 267

ladies, it's not just a male thing.  my daughter doesn't want to talk about it either.  when i push she says she's tired of talking about the navy.
  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

My husband has his days... One day it's navy navy navy, then the next he's like I don't really want to talk about work let's just talk about something else n talk about it tomorrow. So I just say okay until he brings it up again.
  • CaliMom (Maryann)

I am getting in my time with my sailor in Norfolk starting tomorrow.  Can't wait to see him!
  • Jess_0411

  • delta_golf

  • delta_golf

Ok ladies who knows of a good hair salon and place to get waxed I am in need of a haircut and in need of getting my eyebrows waxed. HELP!!!!!
  • ckmom

Sissi  My son is on the Bataan.  I hope I get to do the Tiger Cruise sometime. He will be on the Bataan for 3 years.
  • dms

the Bataan should have a tiger cruise when they return from this mission   your sailor can sign you up and you should give your e mail to the ships e mail address so you get info 1st hand   i felt like i was camping  you share the showers  bring towels. you have your little space to keep all your stuff,  sleep on a mattress - that is like cutting a twin in half lengthwise and you will be 6 in from the  bunk above you to your face  (fun) ask your sailor to sign your berthing to a bottom bunk, very important!. the ship is huge and it is like (take your parents to work day) you follow them everywhere and try to memorize how to get to the important places  mess hall, berthing, bathroom, hanger bay, flight deck.  make sure you take tons of videos and pics of everything  watch the sunset on the flight deck or hanger bay  your cell phone will not work so you need a watch   and make a time plan to meet your sailor the moring of the return so you can be right behind him/her when they man the deck and get up early   oh and you need earplugs to get to sleep and maybe motion sickness meds too  bring a rain coat it might be very cold and raining on deck even in summer     wow
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Sandra, every sailor is given an email account so he should be able to give that to you.  His access may be limited though as they're busy and it also depends on his job.

I would give anything to do a tiger cruise!  We were scheduled for one last November but after we (350+ people) got to the base, boarded the buses and rode 4 hours to the point of embarkation, only to wait a few hours until the seas were finally deemed too rough for us to go out to the ship.  Talk about a bummer!  Everyone was sooo disappointed - families and sailors alike.  The upside was being able to be at the pier for homecoming the next day, so that was the silver lining :)

  • ckmom

We really don't know when the Bataan will be returning, we still have many months to go yet.  :-(((
  • joyce

  • mrshdge (SHIP 07 DIV 113)

Hi all!!! Joining this group.  Hubby just received orders to Norfolk.  He's joining the USS Mesa Verde.  He's meeting her on deployment, so I'm taking care of the relocation for us.  Any help about the area and the move would be great!!!!  Thanks in advance!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Welcome! I have a friend in CA whose son is on the Medal Verde. Where are you coming from?
