For families and friends of Sailors who are stationed at Norfolk; for either Sea Duty or Shore Duty Sailors. Just make sure to keep OPSEC issues in mind and not disclose ship movements in advance.
When my husband was deployed, my family, his family, and I communicated with him via military e-mail. You can send photos, just keep it PG. You never know who is looking at the e-mails, Also, don't expect them to go into great detail about where they are or what they're doing, especially if they are in a hazardous duty area. That's a huge no-no.
Has anyone stayed at the Navy Lodge Norfolk and had a room with a kitchen? I am having difficulty finding out if the kitchenette has an oven or just a stovetop.
Maryann, I haven't stayed there but - in April this year I was visiting my son's condo, I stopped at the Navy Lodge, toured the rooms, got info and took pictures; here's the link to the Discussion: Navy Lodge Norfolk info, rates and photos. Read CShore7222's comments there too, she said that despite having a two-burner stove, there was nothing to cook in, plan accordingly! :) There is a free continental breakfast served every morning, and coffee & tea 24/7.
The double rooms (two queen beds) and family suites have a range (stovetop + oven) and microwave plus fridge. The single rooms (one queen bed) only have a microwave and small fridge. To speak to them, the direct number to Navy Lodge Norfolk is 757-489-2656.
"Loose tweets sink fleets, and as sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship Bataan learned, unchecked gossip can bring down a command’s Facebook page. The Bataan’s page was shut down May 15, severing a major communication line to sailors’ families as the Norfolk, Va.-based ship continues its deployment in the Mediterranean. A page for at least one other ship may also be removed, as well."
Hello everyone, i am new to this forum. My hubby just got his orders to Norfolk. I am in a panic trying to find a renal property in a good family neighborhood. Any idea where to look for a place. I have a four year old and one on the way. Any advise would help. Thank you!!
Pat: It depends on if they have someone to replace him or not. When my husband's ship has been deployed, and someone discharges, they fly them home. However, if the Navy has no one to replace him, they can extend him. But seeing how the Navy is "over manned" right now, I don't really see replacing him being an issue.
My son just found out that he is being assigned to the USS Boise in Norfolk. He is a Nuke MM just finishing up ELT school in Ballston Spa, NY. Hope to learn from all your experiences :0)
Martha, Pat, Connie, etc My son is the same. He talked alot when he was little, but not since...about anything! However, when I visited him before his recent/1st deployment and he took me a tour of his ship, he talked more about his ship then all words put together for the last15 yrs I think! LOL I was so amazed, in awe and proud. I wish I had an audio tape to play it back just to hear him talk! I am very thankful for this forum where I can at least ask some of my questions to spare Chris!
My husband has his days... One day it's navy navy navy, then the next he's like I don't really want to talk about work let's just talk about something else n talk about it tomorrow. So I just say okay until he brings it up again.
Hey ladies!!! Haven't posted in awhile I am still getting settled here in Norfolk and would love to meet up with more of you ladies. If any of you ever get bored shoot me a message cause my hubby is always at work!!
the Bataan should have a tiger cruise when they return from this mission your sailor can sign you up and you should give your e mail to the ships e mail address so you get info 1st hand i felt like i was camping you share the showers bring towels. you have your little space to keep all your stuff, sleep on a mattress - that is like cutting a twin in half lengthwise and you will be 6 in from the bunk above you to your face (fun) ask your sailor to sign your berthing to a bottom bunk, very important!. the ship is huge and it is like (take your parents to work day) you follow them everywhere and try to memorize how to get to the important places mess hall, berthing, bathroom, hanger bay, flight deck. make sure you take tons of videos and pics of everything watch the sunset on the flight deck or hanger bay your cell phone will not work so you need a watch and make a time plan to meet your sailor the moring of the return so you can be right behind him/her when they man the deck and get up early oh and you need earplugs to get to sleep and maybe motion sickness meds too bring a rain coat it might be very cold and raining on deck even in summer wow
Sandra, every sailor is given an email account so he should be able to give that to you. His access may be limited though as they're busy and it also depends on his job.
I would give anything to do a tiger cruise! We were scheduled for one last November but after we (350+ people) got to the base, boarded the buses and rode 4 hours to the point of embarkation, only to wait a few hours until the seas were finally deemed too rough for us to go out to the ship. Talk about a bummer! Everyone was sooo disappointed - families and sailors alike. The upside was being able to be at the pier for homecoming the next day, so that was the silver lining :)
hi all: my son chris arrived in Norfolk in May. He is AT and really enjoying Virginia, especially virginia beach. He is shore duty. Hope to be chatting with you all
Hi all!!! Joining this group. Hubby just received orders to Norfolk. He's joining the USS Mesa Verde. He's meeting her on deployment, so I'm taking care of the relocation for us. Any help about the area and the move would be great!!!! Thanks in advance!
I don't know how many of you have sons or daughters that are on aircraft carriers, but I thought I would share some information with you about a book I just came across.
I am a children's librarian in a school in Kentucky and am working on the end of the year inventory. I came across a book today that I forgot I had ordered for the library and I thought some of you might want to get it.
The book is called "Nugget on the Flight Deck" by Patricia Newman. It gives lots of great information about what life is like on an aircraft carrier and explains a lot of the Navy lingo and terms they use. I learned a lot by reading the book and I know if you have someone on an aircraft carrier, you would love this book. Especially if you know of any children that have parents on an aircraft carrier. This would be a great book to share with them.
My daughter is on a destroyer. They came home from deployment in Dec and had the tiger cruise in March. We had to go to Boston to meet the ship(it was there for a week before) and we rode it to Norfolk. We were on 3 nites and 2 1/2 days! Maybe that is unusual but it was the neatest thing ever. We were all over the ship and spent a lot of time on the bridge and bridge wings. I would love to do it again. Not all ships have cruises after deployments. You may be able to go on for a tour when the ship is docked. Ships also have family day cruises which are diff. from tiger cruises.
This is my experience last fall, when the Iwo Jima returned from a four month humanitarian mission, so may not be typical. And I want to observe OPSEC so will generalize a bit :)
The FRG (family readiness group) was in contact with us in the days leading up to its return, with information about car passes, pier # etc. The ship was due at 10:30 am, so I got to the base and parked just before 9:30 and got out of the car to hear someone say "Here they come!" so my point is, be early!!! There were several small tents set up for VIP seating, and music played over loudspeakers. Everyone was crowded outside the gate to the pier, waving pompoms and wonderful homemade welcome-home signs to the sailors onboard. New moms of babies born during deployment were escorted through the gate to the gangplank to be the first to welcome their sailors home (21 in this case!). Then everyone, signs aloft, waited for their sailors to make their appearance coming through the gate. Some sailors called their loved ones on their cellphones and went on deck to wave to us below, which makes good photos by the way! :) Most sailors are lugging seabags with them. Goodbyes to shipmates are said and everyone dispersed fairly quickly. Some wives and girlfriends are dressed to kill, pretty funny to observe tottering in 3"+ heels, too LOL
Marcy: that bought tears to my eyes. I would miss it all I would be crying so much. Its beautiful to read about. My son is shore duty in Norfolk. Cant wait to just be able to go see him there
Well I finally heard from my son he was asking me was any one else was meeting the ship like I said it is coming in july don't just the date is missing ship been out since january
Please keep OPSEC issues in mind. Do not discuss dates of any kind. Just because this is a navy support site does not mean that we are safe to discuss specific military information. Anyone can get on this site and anyone can read this information. Keep discussions and questions general and broad and ask someone to personally message you if you need any specific info. Thanks ladies!
Ladies I thank you all for the infor about the tiger cruise I enjoy you all talking about your boys and girls Iam glad I join you all and can share things I thank you all
I ordered a Blue Star Service Flag last week and received and hung in my front window on Sat. I heard about it on N4M but don't remember what group. I love it! Also ordered a necklace, You spouses may already know about the flag and I've heard you're discouraged from displaying anything that would tip thieves off that you're the wife of a sailor and may be alone. So sad that our society is so cruel. For those who have never heard of it you can go to www.bluestarmothers.org and read about the history and to www.serviceflags.com to see the available merchandise
Never heard that Christy. Seems to me, a Blue Star Mom would be the one I wouldn't want to tangle with! :) Mine's been in the window beside my front door for a while now.
Hi ladies does anyone have any opinions on Kings Grant Landing Apartments in Virginia beach? they have great rating and accept large dogs soo its looking pretty perfect
Hi, I need a little help. Is there a web site that my son or I could buy study manuals he needs for promotion. He dozen't want to down load books he wants to refer to a manuals.I've looked on line with no success. LOL

Here's something to be aware of - Gossip Shuts Down USS Bataan's Facebook Page (NavyTimes.com)
