My sailor called last night, happy sailor..has only been there a week, classing up for C school on Monday...said he likes it there, much better weather then soggy Pcola. So far has had no problems figuring out where everything is, found all the basic he needs gas station, bank and super walmart...:0 He said he spent the first day in his new room just cleaning it now he fells better in it....he looked up some of his Pcola buddies and they are getting together for some fun this weekend......makes a mom heart feel good to get an upbeat and happy sailor phone call!

    John and Yvonne,

I think that it is great thing that you are doing for these Sailors. I just recently visited my son because he is on limited duty from a blood clot, I saw so many sailors sitting along eating and just looking at their phones. They are lonely up there, I know my son is alone alot of the time and just in his room. If it wasn't for their cell phones they would have almost no contact with anyone other than when on duty. Norfolk and Portsmouth is very popluated with militray but they still are so alone. So thank you for opening up your home to these men and women. My heart goes out to them.

Just got a call from my Sailor from a number I didn't recognize. He was calling from his LPOs phone because they wanted him to call and make sure I was ok and if I am being affected by the storm/hurricane. Bless his heart! I'm sure he wanted to tell them, "she's got this!" He knows how many times we've done the "hurricane" thing. But, it was nice to hear from him!! :) It's actually quite a nice day here right now...a little cooler and sunny! But the rain will come....

  • BeachBunny

That is so sweet!! What a wonderful LPO too!!

  • John and Yvonne

Thank you donnab.  So how recently did you visit your son? If you are ever here again we would love to meet you.:) And if your son ever wants a home cooked meal and have some fun playing board games with other sailors and us he would be welcome to come over. And if he needs a ride we would be happy to pick him up and take him back to the base.

    Tonya M,

I'm happy to hear you found a few churches for your daughter to try out! And it's good to hear it bothers her that she's not in church.

If she ever decides she would like to come over we would be happy to give you our phone number for her to get in touch with us. Just let us know. :)

  • BeachBunny

  • BeachBunny

Thank you...I'll pass that information on to my sailor...:)))

  • John and Yvonne

    BeachBunny,

One of the female sailors who comes over to the house has just purchased a sewing machine and has been sewing patches on uniforms for other sailors as a little side business. I would be happy to let her know your son is looking for someone to do that.  Hopefully we can connect the two.

    Yvonne

  • John and Yvonne

I also have known some who have brought their business to Suky's Tailors. They were satisfied with her work.

    to Josh'smom,

I talked to our female sailor and she wanted to know what ship your son is on? She is also stationed at Norfolk on one of the ships.

    Yvonne

  • BeachBunny

I remember a couple of weeks ago there was talk on this group about mail problems for the sailors in Norfolk. My sailor got there last week for C school and gave me his address...another sailor go their the week before and gave his mom his address to ship his laptop and some other items...they showed up on time on Wed to his new squadron......did the other sailors get their mail worked out? Wonder if it depends on where you are working on this base? Just thought I'd post, encase anyone needed updated information.....

  • TJCsMom

My son moved from the ship to the barracks this week. He is really happy now that he has a bed!! Lol I asked if he has an address and he said he doesn't know it. He said he would try to find out and let me know. Said the barracks are nice and he is no longer "living" out of his car. :)
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

MYLAS. Wow so nice to see you post. How is your son doing?

  • Josh'smom

In Raleigh, NC working today and heading to Norfolk tomorrow morning to work and visit my son for a few days. Miss that boy so much. A bit on the cold side and raining.
  • John and Yvonne

    Josh'smom,

that's good to know. I will pm Crystal's info to you tomorrow(the sailor who sews on patches. Have a blessed night.

    Yvonne

P.S. I hope you enjoy your time with Josh tomorrow. And it did rain all day today-not sure about tomorrow.

  • John and Yvonne

There is another sailor who comes over to the house sometimes who is also on the Iwo Jima.

  • John and Yvonne

    Josh's Mom,

I sent you a friend request so I could pm you Crystal's info about sewing on patches. I think that's the only way it will be private.....unless the inbox is private, and I think it is.

    Yvonne

  • Josh'smom

Yvonne -accepted your friend request. My son did say that it takes a very long time to have patches added to uniforms on base.

Happy Birthday to our great United States Navy!!  HOOYAH!!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

LOL Catmom we were thinking the same thing!  I wonder how many of our Norfolk sailors went to last night's Navy Ball?

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Did they have a ball at every base?
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Yes, all over the world - and also here at home in cities that don't have a Navy base - or even water nearby :)  For example, the Phoenix Navy Ball will be next Saturday, and there was one in Colorado Springs, CO last night - http://www.navyleague-coloradosprings.org/navyball.html

  • Cindy D

My son reenlisted today! Very proud and glad I was able to come to Norfolk for it.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Is there a navy ball every year?
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Congratulations Cindy!!  I attended my son's too - nothing like it!  Where did he chose to have his reenlistment ceremony?

Yes, there's a Navy Ball every year, it commemorates the 'birthday' of the Navy on October 13, 1775. http://www.history.navy.mil/birthday.htm

  • Cindy D

He reenlisted on the flight deck of his ship. It was very cool!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Wow!  What a great experience.  Enjoy your time with him!

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Congratulations Cindy D. That is great. Hoping mine will when the time comes

Hey everyone! I'm a Navy wife looking for a ride from Norfolk International to Dam Neck. Anyone in that area? It would be Thursday morning. My flight gets in at 10:23.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Ignore any spam/emails from "Cindy Starkenberg" - it's been reported and this 'person' is being removed by N4M's admins.

Unfortunately this happens every once in a while on N4M :(  If you ever see a problem, use the "Report an issue" link at the bottom of the page.

  • Josh'smom

My son was going to request a Thursday and Friday off so he could come home for a long weekend. He was told that if he takes those days he would have to report back on that Friday or also take Saturday and Sunday as leave days. That sounds crazy since he is off for the weekend. They told him he could take Friday off for special liberty and not have to report back until Monday morning. Does this sound right?
  • Dad of Sailor

    Josh'smom,

Every command has a different policy on special liberty and three days off work consecutive is normally the max they will authorize. The CO can authorize 4 days but that is normally for specific circumstances, not just so someone can have a four day weekend.

He gets 30 days leave/"vacation" a year to allow him to go home when he wants. If they will give him a Friday off for free I'd jump on it.

Remember, there are limits on how far they can travel from their duty station when not in a leave status. If he travels outside this distance and is caught or gets in an accident or trouble he will get in trouble. My last command we could not travel more than 250 miles away from the command without being on leave.

  • Dad of Sailor

There is a way to get permission to travel outside the boundary on liberty but he must get written permission to do so if he's not on leave.

  • Proudmom
