Kimberly68 -- Sorry for the delay in answering. My son is a DC on the Eisenhower. He has been there since the week before Thankgiving 2014. We live just north of Indianapolis -- The boys could car pool home. Jake is actually flying in on Wednesday!!! I am so excited...

Good Morning Norfolk Friends, my son will be coming next week, He will be getting married at the end of May, What is the best location for him and his new bride to live, I understand on base is at lease 6 month waiting list. Bride will at one point be attending college, we would love for them to be in a safe location. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Angie - congrats on the upcoming nuptials! That's exciting ;-). My son and his roommate live in an apartment in VA Beach. So far no complaints.... here's the link if you are interested:
Hi all - Happy Friday and Happy Mother's Day. I hope you are lucky enough to hear from your sailor or sailorette but if not know that you are still being thought of!
My son will be finishing up A school next week and heading to Norfolk after a few days of leave. He's very excited and I'm very nervous. We have been lucky to have him a few hours from home these last 10 months that he's been in.
Happy Mother's Day, B'sNukeMoM!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend and get phone calls from your Sailor! My Sailor is back out with the TR since leaving Bahrain. I may get a ship-to-shore call, but it depends on how crowded the phone banks are onboard. I did get to talk to him this week and we've had several good facebook-message exchanges, so I can't complain. :) Thank you for checking in with us all each day. I may not respond often enough, but I do appreciate your posts. <3
Does anyone know of a place or facebook page for buying/selling furniture or household goods from military who may be moving? Today my son moved into the place he rented for him and his soon to be wife, and considering he has lived on the ship for over a year and a half, that consists of his clothes, uniforms and computer. lol. We face timed earlier so he could show it to me, and it's quite empty. Since everything they buy or get as wedding gifts has to be hauled out there, they were wanting to just buy their bigger furniture when they get there next week after the wedding.
Hi all - Happy Monday! Cute one Marcy. I was lucky, my sailor sent flowers on Saturday and I got a call on Sunday (this was my 3rd Mother's Day without my Sailor). Then later in the day we were at my mom's & he called & spoke with her - MADE HER DAY!
Tracy - I don't know of anything but I'll keep my ears open & if I hear anything I'll pass it on.
Tracy, they can join this group on Facebook: "Buy, Sell & Trade of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach &.... Of course there's Craigslist too. If they're up for it, there's also an Ikea in Woodbridge Virginia, about a 2.5 hr drive north; my son pretty much furnished his first apartment in Portsmouth there - brought it all back and assembled it.
Hi everyone! Anyone know the best way to find an apartment in a safe location either close to base or Portsmouth? My son & his roommate want to move out of the barracks, but, I personally, would rather them stay where they are, since it's safer & cloae to.the shop wherw they work. My sailor says he may be going to C school in October in Portsmouth. If that's the case, I would prefer him stay put where he is until then, so he can move close to school & avoid the tunnel & traffic each day. Any suggestions?
Highly recommend The Myrtles at Olde Towne in Portsmouth (the collection of three story red brick buildings, not the "sister" high-rise across the street), right next to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth at the corner of Effingham and Crawford Parkway. Safe, well managed, great amenities, and you can walk to the ferry that goes to Norfolk's Waterside (McArthur Mall etc) too. http://www.myrtles-apts.com
My son lives in Virginia Beach - has a roommate (they were roomies together in NY too). They rent at Midtown @ Town Center. They've only been there for about 3 months now, but so far they like it.
Welcome Joe&NatesMom, our son is on the Bush. He has been in Norfolk for the past 3 months. He says there's a lot of fun things to do, when they have time. This is a great place to get answers. Wish your son all the best.
Thanks everyone! Our son is on the Bataan...he got there after A school and a month later he was underway (think that's the terminology). He got back in October and now we are on pins and needles waiting to find out where our next Sailor will be stationed...He's in A school right now!
His brother went on the Tiger Cruise with him. They had a blast! We live about 5 hours from Norfolk so we have been there a few times. He got married between A school and deployment and they currently live in Sufolk...
Joe&NatesMom - I don't have any recommendations (my son is pretty new there) but if you look up above Marcy posted a discussion "CAR FAQs for Norfolk sailors!...." It has some info on repair places. Does your son have Automobile Club for towing?
Hi everyone! My husband and I just got back from a vacation in Hawaii, so I haven't been on here for a while. :) We had a great time and now it's back to the real world!
My sailor is headed down to Norfolk this Sunday. He has been with us for the last 3
weeks after finishing A school in GROTON. A heavy heart but very proud of him.
Oh John & Yvonne - welcome back from Hawaii - I'm sure you had a wonderful time ;-) It's been years since I've been to Hawaii - think I'd like to visit again soon!
Welcome Nereida! My son is fairly new to Norfolk too. He arrived in February - so far so good! Glad you had a nice visit with him ;-)
Hi everyone! My son just got into Norfolk...well Little Creek, this week! He is extremely excited to have this be his first permanent station! I am so nervous, excited and happy he is loving his choice of joining the Navy!! I hope this is the right group for me to be in? lol I search for a group with his squad..but could not find one. I hope everyone has a blessed and safe Memorial Day!!
Hi Kimberly68! My son is a GM and is assigned to Riveron squad 4. He said he isn't on a ship...I am still learning all of this. lol He just left a months training in MS after schooling... he loved MS much better than school. I hope he enjoys this just as much!! :)
Hello G-mans Mom! My son is on the USS Bataan. He and his wife live in Sufolk and are getting used to the area. He is rate is MM and is a 3rd Class Petty Officer (hope I got that right!). This site is a wonderful world of information!
John and Yvonne. You might have bumped into my son you met in Norfolk when we were there for his twins return from Deployment. He has his first duty station in Pearl Harbor and arrived there May 15th. He is loving it so far. Likes the fresh pineapple ice cream.
CO-Twin, We may have! Saturday morning we were at Dukes on Waikiki for breakfast. And we left on a hop from Hickam on Monday the 18th! If you get a chance, you should go visit him!
Angie - if you look above you'll find a couple of posts in the "Moving to Norfolk next month" discussion. I posted the apartment complex where my son has lived since February. He likes it so far!
Hi all, I have been reading the comments below on places to live. My son & one of his roommates want to move from the barracks to an apartment. I was reading apartment reviews & found The Royal Mace apts. has pretty good reviews. Does anyone know if living in Ocean View is safe? The Bondale apts. seem to have pretty good reviews also. They prefer to live closer to base than Virginia Beach. We don't know the safe places to live & the places to steer clear. Any recommendations is appreciated. Also, will he still get BAS allowance?
