Welcome aboard. We are 2 days drive from our sailor in Norfolk. It has been kind of hard. I do have an older son that lives 15 minutes away and works with my husband and a 14 year old at home. The house sure would be quiet without all of them.

    Welcome 1ProudMomofNavySon!

We hope your son enjoys his time in the Navy!

Just thought I'd let you know that my husband and I have been inviting sailors into our home on the weekend for the last 16 years. We feed them and play board games with them, go mini golfing, and other activities around the area.

We'd be happy to invite him over if you think he would be interested.  You can go to our page on this site to find out more about us.

Wow! Things sure do happen quickly. My son arrived at his ship on Friday, he thought he would get his 10 days leave once he arrived at his new station. BIG Navy Suprise, The ship pulled out of port Saturday morning and heading out to sea. He's going to 2 ports up the coast then to the middle east in June for a 6 month deployment. He wont be back till December. It happened so fast, I'm still in shock.

  • 1ProudMomofNavySon

I want to send him an Easter Care Package, How long do you think it will take to arrive? I want to make sure I send it in plenty of time so it's not late. Also I'm sure chocolate will melt so does anyone have any suggestions about what you have sent your Sailors? I know there's not room for a basket or plastic eggs. I've discovered Pinterest has some ideas too.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

My son got home for his 10 day leave and got a call to report early. His plane landed in Norfolk and 4 hours later he was on a moving ship on deployment! Gone 7 months!!!
  • Proud AG Mama

Wow, whirlwind Co-TwinSalorsMom. Nothing like jumping in the deep end for your sailor.

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Another mom sent me pictures and he had the look of a deer caught in headlights.
  • Proud AG Mama

Way neat that you got pictures. I would look like a deer in the headlights too. He will adjust. Whirlwind. No chance to second guess or get nervous.

  • My baby boy is now a man

CO-TwinSailorsMom, what ship is your son on? My son is underway as well.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

My don deployed that first time so abruptly June 2013. He has sense be back, deployed again and is currently in Norfolk and his ship is doing a series of short underways. He did not re enlist and will be leaving the Navy in November:(  He has a twin also in the Navy out of Hawaii who so far is quite satisfied and last we talked was re enlisting. He is currently deployed on a sub.

  • 1ProudMomofNavySon

Does anyone know if the sailors can receive emails when deployed? I do not have a way to contact my son and wanted to send him a few words of encouragement on his first few days out to sea?

  • MoCityMom

To 1ProudMomofNavySon - yes on most ships, they can receive email while deployed.  However, emails have to be sent to their Navy accounts.  Hopefully you have his Navy email address.  They will not see them immediately, just whenever they have time to log on.  Accessibility is determined by their rate (job duty).

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

I mostly FB message with my son. fun, almost like talking.

  • Michelle

Someone asked about Easter care packages. Since my son will not be home for Easter, I too would be interested in sending a package. Please let me know your thoughts about the package getting there in time. I hear playing cards are a good item to send, even little toys they can goof off with in their spare time, beef jerky, maybe some protein powder (if I can find it in small enough packages). Any other ideas?

  • John and Yvonne

Michelle, is he deployed? If he is, don't send chocolate-it melts. :) DVD's are good, cookies individually wrapped and in a strong box, little toys are good. I use to send some of the sailors who come over to our house(when they were on deployment) those and cookies and sometimes DVD's of the Little Rascals(original)-gives them something to laugh about. For their birthdays I made peanut brittle  in a round pan and put a hole in the middle so they could put a candle in it.(I sent the candle too), balloons they could blow up, (all the things we did when they were little.) I think they and others who celebrate with them get a kick out of those. :)

  • Brooke

Hi everyone, I have a non-Navy question for anyone who has visited or lives around Norfolk. My husband's 21st Birthday is coming up and I was trying to find a good restaurant to try. His actual Birthday is on a Monday so he just wants to go out to dinner at a fun place and save the more "21st Birthday" kind of fun for the weekend. So has anyone been to a really cool/fun restaurant in the area? The example he gave me was something with an interesting atmosphere like Rainforest Cafe haha Hopefully somewhere that serves alcohol so he can order atleast one drink on his birthday. Any where in the Hampton Roads area will be great. Thank you for any suggestions!
  • NonnaB

Hi Brooke, my son lives n Norfolk and likes to eat at Nara Sushi and The Melting Pot. Both are in Virginia Beach.
  • Brooke

Thank you NonnaB and Alaskan Mom, I will definitely look into those places!
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

My son says PF Chang's at Town Center in Virginia Beach and there's a comedy club called Funnybones right next door.

  • Brooke

    Awesome Marcy, thank you!
  • Michelle

Yvonne, he is not deployed... yet! We're getting pretty close though so they take the ship out a lot. And, I got my paperwork in for the Family Day Cruise.  I am so extremely excited for it!

Thanks for the great ideas! As always, you are a blessing to us Navy Moms who have sailors in the Norfolk area! Thanks to you and your husband for all you do! God Bless you both!

  • dwaynesmom

I sure hope our Family Day Cruise paperwork is approved because I made our flight arrangements yesterday! It sounds like an awesome opportunity.
Creole Mommy, we both have LA boys. Let's try to get them in touch with each other.
  • Michelle

I keep thinking the same thing dwaynesmom!  My son even said I missed a signature but when he turned it in, the girl told him it should be fine... fingers crossed!!!

  • Suzanne

Good evening... I'm in FL but my son is in Norfolk, he's headed out soon, but not on float...
  • John and Yvonne

Good for you Michelle! I hope you enjoy the Family Day Cruise!

  • NavyWife2011

Hello! Any WASP wives out there? :-)
  • Susana

My sailor has been in the Navy for a year and at Norfolk for the last 9 months. This is still new to me and I feel like I still have a lot to learn. I am so glad for this website. You have helped me so much. thank you! I read about the family day cruise and was just wondering what that is and how you sign up for it.
  • Wasp mom

Hi there, I am a Wasp mom. Has anyone heard from their sailors?
  • juliw

Wasp mom - My son is not assigned to the Wasp but he is on it. He contacted my dad for his birthday. He says things are pretty good out there and has decided he's looking forward to this deployment. I hope you hear from your sailor soon!

  • 1ProudMomofNavySon

I was able to text him last Thursday for a few minutes. He's only been a sailor on the Wasp since March 3. So he's pretty new. He is liking it alot better than when he first arrived. I mailed his first Care Pkg Monday for Easter. I hope he gets it in time. I've never mailed a box before so I'm not sure how long it takes. I wish all your sailors the best of luck and I know you can't wait to hear from them. Happy Easter everyone.

  • NavyWife2011

Hi Juliw, please feel free to join USS WASP LHD-1(Loved Ones) since your son is on the Wasp. I'm so glad you got to speak with him, that's a wonderful feeling. :-)
  • NavyWife2011

Awesome! So glad you were able to speak to your son. My husband has been on the Wasp since December with 5 years in. Your son should definitely receive it in time :-).
  • NavyWife2011

    Happy Easter!!! :-)
  • NavyWife2011

Are you both in the group USS WASP LHD-1(Loved Ones)? So, that we could have discussions there amongst people that have loved ones on the Wasp rather than under another page :-)
  • 1ProudMomofNavySon

I am in the USS Wasp Group.

  • NavyWife2011

    Okay great! 1ProudMomofNavySon :-)

  • Wasp mom

    I think I am too
  • Michelle

Hi Susana! What ship is your sailor on? The ship schedules the Family Day Cruise, so you should speak with your sailor to see when that will be. My sailor knew about the cruise back in June but they kept pushing the tentative date out. I finally heard about the official date early this month. Anyway, there are usually groups on here for each ship. You will want to join the group for your sailor's ship to keep abreast of what is going on with your sailor's ship specifically. Of course, feel free to remain a member of this group as there are some very helpful and knowledgeable people here! I wish you and your sailor the best! God Bless!

  • oneproudmamma

It has been a while since I have been able to get online.  I am about to move to Norfolk to help with my grand baby.  My youngest will be going along with me and we are looking to see what is the best school for her to attend high school, or possibly homeschool.  Any parents know what the best schools are?

  • Pobs

Oneproudmamma, I asked a friend of mine that has a daughter in high school, and she said if she was pushed to rate them she would say Granby, Maury, Norview, and then Lake Taylor, and to definitely avoid Booker T Washington. She said Granby and Maury are the top two.

  • oneproudmamma

Thank you Pobs!  When I called the district they weren't very helpful.  Do you know if I a able to put her in the school of my choice?  She is also a musician so I am wanting to keep her in a school with a good music department.  She would have been going to a Arts Magnet school if we weren't moving.

  • Pobs

You can apply for out of district if your kid isn't in one of the specialty programs. Magnet programs:
    Granby: International Baccalaureate
    Norview: STEM leadership and engineering
    Maury: medical

There is also a Governer school of Arts, but you go to a regular high school in the morning and then I believe there is transportation to GSOA for afternoon classes.

I'm not sure how you apply for an out of district school, but it is possible. My friend's daughter is in the medical program and she had to apply for that program and that's how she got in to Maury. It's not her district school.
  • oneproudmamma

That has been a great help!  I think we have decided where she would like to go.  Now it'll be just a matter of applying for her to be able to go since it is out of our school zone and looking into the music departments.

  • Momma8480

Help please, my son just graduated C school and will be joining his new ship in ft Lauderdale during fleet week. They are stationed in Norfolk. Any good info out there regarding fleet week and how and when I should go to best see my son off? Thanks!
  • oneproudmamma

Singingbird, she plays the flute and violin and also does choir.  Not sure if she will do orchestra but she does want to do band for sure.  I believe she is also wanting to learn a new instrument this year.  Possibly do marching band as well.

  • Heathcliff

How safe to live Norfolk /Hampton/ New Port area ? Me and my fiancé (Airman) are looking for a house or an apartment but My fiancé has been really negative and skeptical about the area before even really into it. He thinks that when he is underway , I would be all my self , and if the area is not good , he worries too much , and I am really curious since I haven't been yet to VA.  Would you give me some advises and thoughts , please ? Our plan is to get married in Sept , and I really think we still have plenty of time to research.

Also How is like in base housing ?

  • Joe&NatesMom

Heathcliff...my son and his wife bought a house in Chesapeake a few months ago. Rent was outrageous in a "safe" place. Their mortgage is much less. His Ship is underway a lot, and he was worried about the same thing. The neighbors are very nice, and seems like everyone looks out for each other. They heard that Base housing was very dangerous.
  • abuon18

Heathcliff, there are some nice, safe areas in Hampton and Norfolk but they are expensive. I would stay away from Newport News. My husband and I have lived here for almost 2 years now. First we lived in Virginia Beach - there are some nice areas some not so nice but again you pay more for the nicer areas. We now live in Chesapeake. We bought a house here a year ago like Joe&NatesMom's son and I find it to be much safer and we get more for our money here as far as what we are paying for our mortgage monthly vs. what we paid in rent in VA Beach. If your fiance is an airman though, which base will he be a? Langley or Ft. Eustis? You might want to stick closer to Hampton or Suffolk then - I don't know much about Suffolk but from what I hear it is nice, safe and less expensive cost of living-wise than the Norfolk/Chesapeake/VA Beach area.

Hi all!  I just added a few things to the Discussion Forum area above :)

In  the Discussion called "Car FAQs," I added sailor recommendations for shipping a car.

I started a new Discussion - "Child care" - with recommendations from sailors in Norfolk and Portsmouth.

  • NavyWife2011

I provide care in the Norfolk area if anyone is looking. My home is about 3 minutes from NOB. Care.com is great and I have a profile on there. Have a great day! :-)
