Hello ladies! Just wondering, my son has not received ANY of his letters yet, any ideas? and Yes his classes started today as well, said they had to wait until they had enough to start and his graduation would be on April the 13th! Do they have a formal graduation? and diannep, how far south are you down there?
  • nancynavymom

Karen, that is very true! LOL What class is he in, maybe they are together?
  • diannep

nancynavymom: I live south of Miami, actually a suburb (used to be a Miami address, but our area incorporated into its own city). People here are complaining of the cold weather (many of them)...but not me! I LOVE it. I'm out walking in it each day...3 different times! Even when we were in the mid-30's in Jan...I was out. And I have no heat in my house...I just cover up! I think it is wonderful for this time of year. Our HOT is just WAY TOO HOT....and for way too long. I would love this kind of winter every year...without the mid-30's though because that hurt our plants and especially hurt our farmers. No need for that!

And on the graduation, my son told me that they went to one up there. There was just a small number of people there, and he saw no parents for this one. But I do think some parents go???? Is your son a YN by chance? Just wondering if they started school too.
  • diannep

Sharon, I am so sorry about your box saga, and have a feeling that mine may follow suit. Although mine is SMALLER, it was insured. Maybe that's the catch. Haven't talked to my son since Sunday (since his cell is in the BOX!) so don't know if his name is on the "mail" list yet. Should have arrived yesterday, but I know there are probably delays once it arrives on base before it is on the list for them. I wish there was something we could do to help you with this...but I guess we are all in the same boat! Keep us posted. I'm sure this happens ALOT so I know eventually your son will get it. Somehow, some way!
  • nancynavymom

Diannep, LOL I know what you mean about the heat, I live in southern IN now, but grew up in fla, in different cities, and it does get HOT! but this is for the birds up here! LOL And I'll be honest, I'm not sure what the initials YN stand for, I'm still learning the jargon! LOL He is (will be) an Airman in the Navy dealing with the planes that are landing on the ships, he told us there are 20 marines and 5 Navy in his class, if that helps any! LOL
  • diannep

nancynavymom: Oh, ok. Now I understand. My son had told me that there were some Navy working out with the Marines at Meridian. That would be YOUR son. No, they aren't in the same classes, I wouldn't think. YN is Yeoman. Office/Admin. support. Glad you understand the HEAT in South Florida...it's not just the temps, its the 100 percent humidity! Melts the makeup off the face and frizzes the hair! HA! Good luck to your son!
  • nancynavymom

LOL yes! He has lost 10 more lbs since he has been there, guess he works out with both groups! Better him than me! LOL
Well, enjoy the coolness and the sunshine! Talk again soon, and Good luck to your son as well!
  • diannep

Hi, Sharon. Spoke to my son on Friday night from his cell which did arrive thank goodness. I'm sure your large box will get to your son soon...hopefully someone there can help him find it. My son told me that the "target date" for their class is March 12th. He said this teacher (if they are in the same class?) has over 20 yrs experience teaching there, has a PHD, and ishe s no nonsense. Surprise! They ARE in the MILITARY after all! HA! I told him that I can't imagine that they would all be done by then, but maybe there is another class for them after this one? I don't know. I was thinking that our guys would be home on leave by end of March or first part of April. Just a guess....
  • diannep

Yes, Sharon. He's a YN. Sounds like they may receive their orders as early as next week from what I've read from others on this site?
  • diannep

Sharon, My son is struggling some right now. He and school have always had a "hard" relationship...although he did manage to get his 2 yr college degree, which had us shouting from the mountaintops! I spoke to him last night...he is loving the social part of being there with everyone...but the school part has him frustrated. I just keep praying! So glad that your son is on task and has the end in sight! I bet in another week or maybe 2, he will receive his orders?
  • diannep

Sharon, I'm with you. My son is older too, and although he had lived 2 hours away for 1.5 yrs, we still saw him often. I too was ready for the separation. Not to say that I don't miss him, because I do. But he needed this...big time. Time to learn that he can't run to family for everything...has to figure it out on his own.

Hello, all. My son's PIR was 2/26 and he will be heading to Meridian on Tues. Has anyone gone to visit their sailor. I was wondering what the rules are for that. I wanted to plan a trip over spring break and stop there for a couple of days. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.
  • diannep

Hismomdeeship 7div 103: Congrats on your new sailor! So many of us know the excitement of PIR. It is wonderful! My son is at Meridian now too...he graduated (PIR) 3 weeks ago. They are on restrictions for a while...so your son will have to let you know when he can have liberty on the weekends. I believe there are different phases of it. But hopefully, you will be able to see him during spring break...a nice treat for him!
  • mother always

    Good morning
My son arrived on jan 20 2010 and he will be leaving by the end of this month, with God's help.
  • nancynavymom

Hi to everyone, and the new mom's aboard, heard from my son in Meridan last night, he went shopping for new clothes since he can now where them after-hours! LOL
  • mother always

My son will be an AZ,he has not received any orders until now.
  • hismomdeeship7div103

My son will be an LS, anyone else? He will arrive in Meridian on MArch 2, but won't start school until the 10th. Anyone know what they do until they start school?
  • diannep

hismomdeeship: My son's rooommate is an LS. They both arrived Feb 7th in Meridian. Like Joymar said, lots of watches in the beginning (10 hours worth in just a few days with another person so they can learn the base). Your son will have some down time compared to boot camp. When school starts, it gets busy again, but they have some free time on the weekends. Talked to my son yesterday, and he said it was a warm day there...compared to Great Lakes!
  • diannep

Thanks, Sharon! Just joined. So glad you found them and shared it here.
    I didn't know yeomen went to Iraq...yikes...
  • mother always

My son's roommates left already;for now he is alone in the bedroom.
  • nancynavymom

I just wanted to add my son was there about 2 full weeks before they had enough to start a class, said they cleaned all day, but was kinda fun! LOL He graduates on April 13!!!!!
  • mother always

Anymore sailors studying to be an AZ that finish at the end of this month?
    Have a nice day all.
  • diannep

Congrats to you and your son, jamie-nates mom! That is wonderful. I bet he will love Italy and hopefully will be able to see some of Europe while he is stationed there. He'll make new friends on the base there :-) and hopefully will stay in touch with his old ones. Best of luck to him in his future with the Navy!
  • hismomdeeship7div103

Talked to my son today, Delta lost their bags so he has nothing right now. He seemed in a pretty good mood and thinks his roommates are pretty cool. Overall he was very positive which makes things easier for me, lol!
  • hismomdeeship7div103

Thanks for sharing, Tina, so sad for that sailor!
  • nancynavymom

    Will do, how very sad!
  • nancynavymom

Does anyone know...do they have an actual graduation from Meridian?
  • diannep

Nancynavymom: My son said that they do...they observed one when he first arrived there. The one he saw had no parents there that he saw, and there werejust a few sailors graduating. Beyond that, not sure how it works. I would think that parents can attend if they want to???
  • diannep

Thanks for posting this, TINA. I will be praying and will notify "Chrisitan Chat" group on here to be praying as well. I don't know if my son knows this sailor, but he lost his dad too some years back. Maybe he can help him a bit since he is in Meridian also. Thanks for letting us know. My heart goes out to this sailor and his family. I know the road this family has to travel now and it is not an easy one...
  • nancynavymom

    BHappy-thanks for the information!!
  • hismomdeeship7div103

They found their seabags! Anyone on here from PIR 2/26?
  • hismomdeeship7div103

Hi Denise, what is your husband going to school for? How does he like Meridian so far? My son seems to like it.
  • hismomdeeship7div103

Wow, 2 weeks! My son thinks his is 6 or 7 weeks, then he has 4 weeks sub school.
  • diannep

Chris in MI: My son is currently in Meridian. I sent him his cell (they can have them). Some moms were able to go to the Chicago airport to see their sailors off after bootcamp and gave them cell phones/lap tops then (they couldn't receive them while still on base). So, I think they can have them. There has been a problem with BIG BOXES being received in Meridian in a timely manner, so pack as small as you can. Apparently, big boxes are processed differently and the sailors go to a different place to get them. One Mom sent her son his laptop, but he couldn't get service. She didn't know why. You might want to wait until your daughter calls you from Meridian (she has a phone card, doesn't she?) and see what she wants you to do after she checks with others there. Good luck to you and to your daughter!
  • hismomdeeship7div103

Hi Chris! Congratulations on your daughters PIR! My son is in Meridian waiting on LS school to start, I thought it was supposed to start 3/10, but I guess it got pushed back. I know the sailors have computer access so I am not in a hurry to send my son's laptop.
  • diannep

Sharon, if you ever need more info on jobs, just google the abbreviations as a Navy position. That is how I've educated myself. But I have a long way to go! There are so many jobsn the Navy!
  • nancynavymom

Chris-our son had free time in the evening after chow, but not for a couple of weeks, even though his schooling had not started yet, ndon't know if it is the same for all or not though. Good luck, he Loves it now, and we text quite often.
  • mother always

Yes! they can use their phones!
  • mother always

They tell them the address not to long after arriving, there is a big difference in treatment, now they have real beds, they do watches or any other job they assign. They share the rooms with 2 more sailors,in this case, females. There is a nice environment.
  • mother always

NEVER send anything "overnight" to any militar base;just send it Insured and Delivery Confirmation, that way you can track it all the way...The office where they get the mail in base is close on saturdays...
Have a nice day all! (I used to work in the PO,I'm retired now)
  • hismomdeeship7div103

My son got to Meridian last Tues, he called Tues, Wed, and Thurs and I haven't heard from him since. I guess he may be keeping busy, but I am dying to hear from him!
I know he hasn't started classes yet unless he started this week. He wasn't sure when he would start. Does anyone know if school started for LS? I know there is another one starting in a couple of weeks, I wonder if he is on hold until then.
  • sschick02_new navy wife

Just wanted to say hi. My bf is in bootcamp right now but will be attending A School in MS afterwards.
  • diannep

hismomdeeship: Does your son have a phone card or his cell? I'm assuming he used a pay phone to call you last week. My son said the pay phones are a distance from where they are staying (Liberty Center, I think). Your son is probably getting his required watches in...he probably is just busy trying to get adjusted to his new surroundings too after boot camp. I'm sure he will call soon! Hang in there!

Sharon: I feel sure that your son and mine are in the same class. He told me last night that March 18th is the date they hope to be finished. I know that will be different for each one, I would think. But it won't be long!
  • diannep

Welcome sschick02! You will get lots of info on this site about Meridian.
How is your bf doing in bootcamp?
  • hismomdeeship7div103

My son called tonight, he starts school tomorrow. He said he got his orders already and will be stationed in Maryland, not sure where. He still has not received his cell that I mailed last Thurs. HAven't mailed his laptop but now I know to get delivery confirmation, thanks for the advice!
  • sschick02_new navy wife

thanks. Bootcamp sounds like it is going good for him. I talked to him about 2 weeks ago and he sounded really good. He actually proposed to me in a letter and says he has big plans to officially ask me during grad weekend. He told me in one of his letters that they had earned a flag and I'm not sure if they have gotten more since. I believe his job code is going to be SH but not sure. I looked it up and it looks like that is being phased out? He said his school is 4 weeks (20 days) in MS. I am so excited that I am down to just a little over 2 weeks.
  • mother always

    Good morning
You can track it by phone too:
    1-800-222-1811 Post office tracking number
  • diannep

sschick02: Wow, you are going to have an extra wonderful time when you go there for PIR...being asked officially to marry him, and celebrating in the joy of his graduation. The flags are a BIG thing. They really are proud of those and get caught up in the competition. The part of bc that he is in now is still hard, but the fun factor is much greater. Battlestations next week or the 1st part of the following week for him will be the culmination of everything...an all-nighter...and then he trades his recruit cap for his Navy cap. Quite an honor for them. Good luck and congratulations!
  • diannep

Chris in MI: The 6 lines part is right. But I'm not sure the street and surely not the suite number would be the same for everyone? I know the address looks a little odd, but I'm sure what you have is correct. Her name is the most important. My son asked his roommate for the address and relayed it to me, and he has received mail fine and the box with his cell.
  • diannep

I sent it Priority Mail. He got it in 2 days. I was surprised that he got it right on time. Bigger boxes go to a different place on the base than the smaller ones. So she needs to be aware of the 2 places there to check. I understand that there is a "mail list" posted...no mail call like boot camp. So she will need to be checking.
