Ladies please be careful about posting full names, last names, addressess and phone numbers. This is against the community rules of Navy4Moms. It can be dangerous to your sailors as well. jhenderson- if that is your sailors last name also they suggest using something else. Plus you have posted your phone #. You may want to delete that. Sensitive info can be sent in a private message. Sorry to sound like a old biddy but safety to our sailors comes first. Thanks...

cherllynn, glad to see you here! I have not heard from my sailor since we dropped him off Sunday night. I wonder when we will get a phone call letting us know an address and phone number.

Mine called 7am this morning said they were boarding. Said he enjoyed the weekend and was very excited about going on to Meridian. Said they should've arrived there around 1. He did post on fb around 9am saying they were in Dallas on a layover but were boarding soon. I haven't heard anything since. He knows he can call anytime. I don't expect it'll be too long.

Leave it to kids to figure things out. He went to the Nex and bought a psp. says it was real cheap. It can use the internet so he was posting and chatting with his brothers and sister this evening on fb. Where was I...? I had gone out to dinner with my hubby and friends. Did a little grocery shopping. When I got home the kids where all excited because they had talked with him. I missed it all!!!!!!!! But, at least he is fine and all is well.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

J - Have you googled Fallon, Nevada? I don't think it's that far from California but I could be wrong.
  • jhenderson

  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Hi Bris mom and Candy. My son has been there for a week and 1/2 now. Seems to like it. He doesn't say much to me about it but his messages sound good and content. He is able to get online and send messages. He started class this past Wednesday but had yesterday off cause of Veterans Day.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Candy-I'm in NH; far far away from Meridian. :( That's too bad that he has to wait another week. I think the guys like the adventure from place to place. I haven't heard what his plans are for the holidays although he knows his older brother will be here in NH early January so he will probably, if he can, schedule his time around that. But who knows. It's the Navy!!! lol
Happy birthday to your son. Mine was 20 in July. He had signed up in April and had DEP until September. Graduated bc 10/29. It's been a long year.

I haven't a clue as to when you get to see them. I know my son couldn't leave base for a couple of weeks after he got there. They have to earn a green something or other to leave base. But you getting on base I don't know. He has his phone? .hope you get to see him. Keep us posted!!
Jonathan called last night around 7. He had hung around the base with his buddies and he sounded really good. He talked for a while. Glad he has his phone now. Says the guys that were giving him grief have left. Yay!!

Hi Emily. Welcome. There aren't many active members here...most have moved on after A school graduation. I have been through Meridian a few times. There isn't much around there. I don't know what the nearest airport would be. My son should be coming home for Christmas too and I don't know what he is planning. I'm sure the chiefs will let them know. I'll ask my hubby he might know how to research that...lol...
  • joy4m

to emily my husband is going also to mississippi i think they have an airport there from what i was seeing online... and i was also trying to figure out if they are able to come home for christmas break
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Got a call late last night. My son will finish his schooling by the 19th and be home for Christmas. He will have 2 weeks. Yay!! He then will be stationed in Harrisburg, PA.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

It is a very small base from what I've gathered from my son. He says there aren't many there...maybe 300 or so. Very laid back. Nothing like bc. The quarters are set up that you have a roommate and there are 4-5 bedrooms off of one common living/kitchen area.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Well, Lady Hamilton, 12 hours after my son received his orders for Harrisburg he received new orders....for Diego Garcia. It's a small island in the Indian Ocean. But thanks for trying to help...I appreciate it. Nice to meet you.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Oh, no he is not LS, he is PS...Personnel Specialist...
  • Kim of Virginia

Hello everyone, my son is graduating boot camp 12/22 and will come home before going to Meridian Mississippi for school. I we live in Virginia so I am so grateful that his school is not in GL. Any information that you may feel like sharing would be appreciated

    Kim
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Hi sacred's mom. I don't know much at all. It is a rather small base. Very laid back and study is at your own pace. My son seems to be doing very well. Says there is absolutely NOTHING to do there. It is very easy for them to spend all their money cause they are bored. The first few weeks they have to stay on base but then earn their green dot and are able to leave base, I think up to 150 miles? I Dorms are set up 2 to a room with 5 rooms to a common living/kitchen area. That's about it in what I know. Sorry so little. My son leaves around the 17th - 19th of Dec.
  • maussie64

cherilynn, my daughter (YN) is currently in Diego Garcia. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll see if I can answer them.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

maussie-thanks so much. I am soooo glad to have another mom with someone there!!! Yay. I'm not too worried about him going there it's just I don't feel that they are preparing him for it or what he has to do to get there. What did she bring with her? Did she ask for stuff once she was there? They say there isn't much to do there...what is she doing to keep herself busy? I thought Jonathan could take classes.
  • maussie64

My daughter is actually stationed n a ship that is based there. But, she arrived before her ship and spent about 5 weeks on the island.
She said it is gorgeous there and YES there isn't much to do there. It is a six mile island. She took all her Navy gear and some clothes from home. She loaded lots of movies on to her laptop and took her Bible.
She hasn't asked for more than a few clothes, shoes and Cheese Its. I do send snacks in all her care packages though. Last package included pumpkin bread in a jar and her favorite tea.
She likes to hang out at the pool. There is a DG IdoI show every Friday. And she goes to the clubs sometimes. 8/
The Navy won't prepare him to be there. It will be a learn as you go thing. 8)
Where will he be flying from?
  • Kim of Virginia

cheryllynn, thank you so much for the information. Any information is better than none.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Kim- you are very welcome...have you heard from your son while he is at bc? How is he doing? How are you doing?
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

maussie- thank you so much....you don't know what a life line you were to me. I am so thrilled to hear that your daughter is doing well and enjoys being there. The first person we told about Jonathan going there was all negative and blah, blah, blah. UGH. So, now, I am just thankful and excited knowing someone actually there and it's beautiful and going well. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  • shawnmom

My son called last night for the first time since he left a couple weeks ago for Meridian. He seemed satisified with conditions and school. He won't be able to come home to VA until end of January when school is over before he gets info on where he will go then. I can't wait till then. Miss him a lot, but he is going great.
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Yay, shawnmom...glad you got a call. Great way to start the week. Glad to hear he is doing well there.
  • Kim of Virginia

cheryllynn-proud mom. thank you, Yes, I received a letter 2 days in a row, Monday and Tuesday, today was the gas chamber day. He asked us to continue to pray for him because he still has the gas chamber and battle station to go through. He passed all of his physical fitness, firing (he received a ribbon for marksmanship) and his inspections. I am so proud of him. It is a wonderful week and I am counting down 13 days to go and praying that mother nature is on our side for the flight there. Not to concerned about the flight home, because my baby will be with me.
  • dillndrewsmom

  • joy4m

my husband got there on the 7th also and he wanted to TRY to come home for the holidays but it would have cut him short for the end of January... I can't wait to see him again!!!
  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Hi everyone.  My son graduates this AM from Meridian.  hooyah!!  No word yet as to when he can leave to come home.  Once he gets here I can ask him all kinds of questions for you all....lol.

  • maussie64

My daughter graduated and they sent her home the same day. They let her know the day before and made her clear quarters before the grad ceremony.

  • ProudMomS of a SAILOR! 10/29/10

cheryllynn-you are so lucky he has graduated.  Does that mean he will be home for an extended time over the holidays?  Or will he go straight to the fleet then home for the holidays.  My sailor will be there a few more weeks I think.

  • ProudMomS of a SAILOR! 10/29/10

Cheryllyn~ Diego Garcia?!  Wow, that it interesting!  How long will he be there?  Will you be able to visit?  We don't know yet where my sailor will be stationed.  He still has sub school in Groton to get through before he goes to the fleet.

  • cheryllynn-proud mom of a sailor

Friday I was so bummed thinking that he would have to stay on base a few more days after his graduation.  Even cried on the phone with hubby.  Friday night my son Kevin and his wife came up for the weekend.  But after greeting them with hugs I heard someone coming up the stairs. ( we live on the 2nd floor)  I just stopped stairing at the hallway and then there he was.  I burst into tears ran to him and just hugged the kid to death, sobbing.  Kevin had picked him up at the airport.  They had all this planned the day before.  Even my 15 year old who lives here knew the night before.   He is here until the 27th.

Diego Garcia is in the middle  of the Indian Ocean. About 400 miles south of the tip of India.   He will be there a year and you cannot visit there.  He will have internet.
