  • chadanddianedivision155

my son graduates from bc on 4-29-11 and then goes to Meridian, Ms to be a ship serviceman. Just thought i would come on and post, and say Hi! My name is Diane
  • candy-oh!

debotur: He didn't say anything about living in the ghetto :) I'll ask him next time I talk to him!!

chadanddiane: Hey!!  You will love the graduation ceremony. It was such a great weekend. My  husband and I loved Chicago, which we were able to visit after our son went to O'Hare to fly down to Meridian.

  • chadanddianedivision155

I am the Diane part and Iam so psyched about graduation. Depending on the tie of his flight we are going to try to stay to see him off at the airport, but we have to be home saturday night and it is an 8 hour drive. But i hope we can. i can.t wait to see him. and captains cup is tomorrow i'm so nervous for him.
  • candy-oh!

Diane...let us know how it goes!! I am thinking about you...my son is SO happy down in Meridian. I "talked" to him over facebook yestreday and he sounded really really good.
  • kimcon55

Doug really likes Meridian too!  I guess after boot camp they feel like they are at a country club!  It is so nice to be able to talk to him on the phone!  I am hoping he has liberty over Mother's Day weekend - I think I may drive down there!
  • candy-oh!

Kim, I know, right? I'm on spring break this week and I wonder if I should take a quick trip down just to see James Dean. Just coming back from Chicago, I may need to wait awhile just to regain some finances. We talked to him last night...he tried to Skype him while all the family was here but we missed each other. I love being able to text/call/facebook/skype him.
  • kimcon55

Yes, it is wonderful to be in contact with them again.  I am glad you had such a good time in Chicago.  What did you guys do?
  • chadanddianedivision155

My son has battlestations tonite! Hopefully i get my "I'm a sailor call" i think i will tho they got 2nd place in captains cup. Pray!
  • candy-oh!

Diane, keep us posted!!  So exciting. Kim, we went to the Naval Pier and walked through the stained glass museum and had a beer at the cafe that was spoofed in Saturday Night Live (cheezborger, cheezborger, cheezborger, cheeps, no fries). We had dinner at a fabulous Italian restaurant called The Italian Village...three restaurants in one, oldest Italian restaurant in the nation (may be Illinois but I'm pretty sure the nation...been open for like 86 years. There are pictures of Frank Sinatra...and the owners and servers are dressed in suits and tuxes and are extremely gracious. I HIGHLY recommend it. We ate in the cafe on the third floor because I had on a sweat shirt and jeans; they didn't bat an eye, made us feel wonderfully welcome.

hi everyone my son has been in Meridian since beginning of this month.  I was on another group and just found this one...ugh.  He is a LS.  So nice that he can contact now.
  • candy-oh!

Hey, Reggie!! Do you know in what building your son lives? Mine lives in the "hood". I'm not sure how many barracks there are or what all their names are. My son is a yeoman.
  • chadanddianedivision155

My son just called he passed battlestations. He is officially a sailor!!!!! Yay. he leaves for meridian on saturday 06.00
  • candy-oh!

Diane, SO cool. James Dean had to be at the airport at 01.00 Saturday morning but didn't leave until 5 Saturday afternoon, so he was at the airport for 15 hours. The USO there is AWESOME. They have cots and pillows, snacks, coffee, computers...I have never donated to the USO but we are committed to supporting them FULLY from now on. I have never met such nice people in my life. And the only time I cried during the whole weekend was when I watched the people in the airport watching my son walk through the airport. I was pretty much brought to my knees by it.
  • reggie11209 (Ship 11, Div 115)

Diane congrats on the call...I remember that moment only a month ago..it feels like yesterday...how exciting.  They had Ryan on a flight out of Chi at 6:30am.  We met him there at 4:00 am to hand over his cell phone laptop and ipod.  and we got to spend about an hour 1/2 with him before they boarded and off they went.

Hi Candy asked Ry about his building he said it is called the Quarterdeck. He laughed when I asked him...lolz

  • candy-oh!

Reggie, Kimcon's son lives in the "ghetto"!!  My son laughed, too, when I asked him if he lived in the ghetto. He said "no, I live in the hood" which made me laugh. I love it. The "ghetto" is next door to the "hood"; I wonder where the "quarterdeck" is in proximity. :)  Sounds a little classier!!

  • reggie11209 (Ship 11, Div 115)

so far he loves everything about the Navy except the weather..lolz First Chicago with the worst Winter storms on record and now Mississippi with constant tornados. I called him last night right before I went to bed and he said things had cleared and they had gone out to the courtyard. OMG
  • lucyloves...herSailor!

Tell me a out LS...my son signed up for reserves. His job is LS. What sort of civilian job can you do when you get home after going through this program.
  • reggie11209 (Ship 11, Div 115)

There is a huge civilian market for LS.  They gave them a page and a half of outside jobs they would be able to fall into...from post office to computer work to government jobs that have any kind of ordering/delivery aspects.  If I find it around I will put them on.
  • candy-oh!

Just spent an hour on the phone with James Dean; he's doing great. They got kind of locked up in the galley yesterday during chow because a storm went past and then they had to stay in their mods but after that they were fine. He's loving life!!

  • lucyloves...herSailor!

Thanks Reggie1209. I would just love to know more about this.
  • chadanddianedivision155

well my sailor is on his way to Mississippi we met him at the airport this morning at 4:00 am and his plane left at 6:20 it was awesome to see him
  • kimcon55

  • debotur

  • bailey 03/155

debotur- how long did it take your boyfriend to finish? Mines been has class for two days and is on Mod 5 so I think hell be done fast but idk how long the rest will take.
  • angeleyes

my boyfriend's PIR was on May 6th, 2011.  He is in A-school now, but he hasnt called me or tried contacting me since he started A-school...  Does anyone know how long it takes to hear from your sailor once they start a-school?  It's been almost 6 days, and im starting to go crazy from waiting :(
  • bailey 03/155

We gave my boyfriend his phone before her flew out so he had it right away. Alot of the other guys do to and they can use it whenever theyre not in class, dinner, or duty so you should hear from him anytime since one of his roomates will probably have a phone he can borrow!
  • candy-oh!

bailey, my son got to meridian on April 16th and he will be finishing up a-school a week from tomorrow. He didn't start his classes until April 25th. My son called a few days after he got to a-school; I know there has to be some processing time. I think I actually "saw" him on facebook before I heard from him on the phone.
  • chadanddianedivision155

  • chadanddianedivision155

i know it feels like it was just 4 weeks ago that he graduated from boot camp... wait it was LOL!
  • kimcon55

I just took a trip down to Meridian this past weekend to see my son.  He will be finishing up by the end of next week.  Meridian is very nice, it was so good to see the place.  Doug will be going to Bremerton, Washington, USS John C Stennis!  He is excited!
  • reggie11209 (Ship 11, Div 115)

Just got the call this afternoon Ryan tested out today and will hopefully be coming home late this week, early next..He'll be home for 10-14 days and then out to Bremerton Washington to the USS Nimitz....Where has the time gone...
  • jo'smom

My daughters PIR is this Friday! 6/10/11 I'm so excited to see her! Then she is a Saturday departure and will be going to Meridian for LS. She is FTS. Does anyone have any experience with Full Time Support and how that works?
  • Lujos mom

My sailor son arrived in Meridian yesterday, after flying-out of Midway airport in Chicago, and we haven't heard from him yet!  We attended PIR and that was awesome!  And we spent approx. 8 hours, with our son, before he had to return to RTC and be on his way to Meridian!  We're very anxious to hear from him and find out what his schedule is...for example...will his school begin tomorrow or will it be a few days before he begins?  Anyone have any info for this mom who has no idea what LS school is like?  How long does LS school last (weeks? Months?).  How much "free" time do LS student-sailors get?  What are their living quarters like?  How often can they call home?  When can he have his cell phone and personal laptop?  What is the best way to send their electronics to them?  And how soon can they have "civies" to wear on libery...and how soon do they usually get liberty?  Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!
  • lucyloves...herSailor!

Lujos mom: my son graduates bc on 7/1 and will be going to Meridian. I would love answers to all the questions you just asked! lol. And....can they have their vehicles at any time?
  • Lujos mom

Thank you FUNK143!  The info, you posted, is most helpful.  My son has been at Meridian for just 5 days and is still in the "INDOC" week...won't start classes till next week (according to him).  This week he has been able to phone home 3 times, so far, and hasn't had any complaints regarding Meridian...so far.  How long was your BF at Meridian before he got his orders for the Nimitz?  And how soon will he be leaving Meridian?  Does he get Leave before he has to arrive at the Nimitz?  Any info you have is GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks, again!
  • jo'smom

My daughter made it to Meridian! Gets to bunk with her bunk mate from boot camp. She has her laptop so she has internet and she has her phone. Said she finally gets to sleep in today! She was very happy about that! It sure is nice being able to hear from her a little more often now!
  • jo'smom

NavyWife-My daughter went to Meridian June 11th and those who were sent with her got thier orders yesterday already. However my daughter did not because she is FTS.
  • jo'smom

FTS is full time support. She is in the reserves, but works full time like active duty Navy, and can be stationed anywhere. I am learning what that means as I go...I cant find too many others that are FTS...
  • Pmbell 02 (SHIP 10 DIV 266)

My SR just got to boot camp on the 22nd. He will be in school in Meridian. He is also FTS. Nice to meet you all!
  • jo'smom

Nice to meet you pmbell02. Another FTS'r, yay.
  • Lujos mom

Hey NavyWife...my son has been at Meridian for 3 full weeks and received his "orders" earlier this week...so 2 1/2 weeks into school:  He is going to be stationed in Bremerton, WA on the USS Nimitz and has to report there in the middle of August.  At Meridian he is attending school to become a "LS" (Logistics Specialist).  He seems to be doing well, at Meridian, and gets to phone home frequently.
  • Lujos mom

Navy Wife...The LS school is "self-paced" :  They have 16 "modules" to complete, at their own pace, and some sailors get finished before others.  It is my understanding that if you can complete 4 modules in one week, and you can keep-up with that pace, you could easily complete the classes in four weeks.  Some sailors go even faster...and some go slower.  The modules seem to become a little more difficult as they progress.  They only have class Mon. thru Fri. and then continue to PT and stand watches... but they seem to have quite a bit of "free" time as well.  Last weekend a large group of sailors went to a nearby waterpark that only cost $20 for the bus ride to the park as well as park admission...and my son went and said it was a lot of fun!  The "MWR" has a variety of recreational events that the sailors can do during their free time.  Also, while at Meridian, they can eat at Subway (on base) and go to the bowling alley, shoot pool, and there is an outdoor swimming pool that they can use at their leisure.  SOOOOO different from Boot Camp!  They still get personal inspections and have their quarters inspected every week...and they keep in shape with  runs, etc.  It is VERY HOT in Meridian:  Every day it is near 100 degrees!   That's about all I can tell you right now...and I don't know anything about moving families as my sailor is still single.  Good Luck with your move !
  • fa4airtran

@Lujos mom My sailor just got there & I also appreciate the info. He has been to the pool a couple of times already...yes different than BC but they deserve it after going thru that. He had to wait to start his modules because a computer error had him locked out of the system for a few days. It finally got straightened out today.
  • Lujos mom

Fa4airtran:  Glad to hear that your sailor has arrived at Meridian and has already enjoyed the pool!  And I DO agree that they definately deserve the ammenities that are offered, at Meridian, after the BC experience!  Has your sailor requested his civilian clothes be sent to him yet?  My sailor was able to wear civilian clothes, on base, after being at Meridian for only two weeks...during his "free" time of coarse!  He only wanted me to send a few items, of clothing, due to the limited space they have to store them in:  But his civilian swimming trunks were one of the items he definately wanted me to send ( because it is sooooo HOT at Meridian)!  Hope all goes well with your sailor while he is in school!   Keep us informed .
  • fa4airtran

@Lujos mom He got leave for the weekend so I drove to Meridian from Atlanta to pick him up. He is driving back on Monday. It was a treat - I got to see the base. Always nice to have a viz of the place your loved one is in.

I brought our dog who he dearly loves and she didn't recognize him at first & started barking defensively when he got too close to "her" car. When she saw it was him, she went crazy & must have kissed him for 5 minutes.

Meridian-Atlanta round trip in one day is not my idea of fun, though. He does have civilian clothes now.

  • DAB1984

new mom here need to know when my son will get to call me from A school he was supposed to arrive there last night
  • lucyloves...herSailor!
