@ Colby'sproudmom all sailors not going to A school in Great Lakes all leave Saturday after PIR.  My son did tell us that he may get alittle morethan 2 weeks to come home after A school.  We are in Columbus, Ohio and are driving to GL on Thursday, staying thursday night but have the room reserved for Friday &Saturday also and will cancel if we find how he is leaving early Saturday.  We are making the 7 hour drive knowing that we may only get to see him for 8 hours.

Why do they send them to Meridan, MS if their school ia in AZ.  My son had just tod me that his A school was in Meridan, MS.  I wonder if he will have to go anywhere else too.  He had also figured he would be done by the end of November.

AZ stands for Aviation maintenance administrationman.
  • Denise - browns57

Oh now I feel stupid.......I thought you were talking about the state of Arizona. My son is going to be an LS.
  • navywife81

My husband is also an AZ, he didnt start right away maybe like week 2 or 3 till they filled up. Now he graduates Oct 24th =) Yes I met him at the airport in Chicago..at like 3am, i was lucky his flight kept getting delayed so I spent the entire day there with him, till like 10pm. When you find your son all you have to do is go to ticket counter with him and they will give you a gate pass to sit back at gate with him!!  For those with sailors in the AZ program I will tell you something, the PT that they do is VERY hard, they train with the Marines that are also there. Im talking 3-10 mile runs bright and early in the morning. They expect alot from the AZ's ( very sharp uniforms and VERY shinny boots). unlike some of the other jobs AZ's will stay there the enitre 8 weeks ( which doesnt start till they class up) I went down to visit my hubby and there is NOTHING to do down there!! So when they are able to leave base they all go to the mall lol
  • navywife81

Hope I didnt scare any one with AZ's..my husband does like the classes and is excited that he choice AZ. He got his orders last week we will be in Norfolk, Va =)
  • navywife81

His pt is only different in A school..the same in BC.
  • navywife81

Alittle more advice...when u get to the airpot if u can't find him go to the USO its upstairs above the ticket counters, before u go thru security he might be there
  • navywife81

im pretty sure all the sailors will leave on Sat...but not 100% sure. Thats a tough call. i drove so i didnt ahve to worry about flights only had to cancel 1 night at the hotel.
  • navywife81

with all the rain and what not it might be a good idea to keep your flight how it is so your seeing him off and not him seeing you off. Like i said my husbands plane got delayed for many hours on Sat
  • mr2monster

@Colby'sproudmom My sailor went to the airport Saturday morning but didn't actually fly out until 3:00PM. We were able to get gate passes and go all the way to the gate with her and spend time with her until she left..

They got bussed to the airport at like 6:00AM, even if they didn't leave until later in the day. So, if you're going to change your flights to Saturday, make sure you book for later in the evening so you don't end up having to leave before your sailor. Some sailors weren't scheduled to leave until as late as 9:30pm (of the ones we talked to).

So all of us newbies here that PIR'd on the 16th guess alot of them got off base liberty tonight LOL they are so excited. But htey aren't children any more they are now Sailors oh man who said they could go and grow up. Have a great weekend everyone.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Hi, everyone!  My son PIR'd yesterday and left for Meridian, Mississippi at 6:45 this morning.  He is scheduled to begin his AZ training on October 11.  I'm so excited to learn more about this part of his journey with the US Navy.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Hi, cvargo!  Thanks for the welcome!  The Pass-In-Review graduation ceremony was a wonderfully moving experience. I continue to stand in awe of the men and women who sacrifice their lives for our freedom!

My son sent me a text message with his new address.  I plan to send him some civilian clothes tomorrow.  (I met him at the airport the morning after PIR to give him his cell phone.)  Haven't had a lot of contact with him yet, but I understand he is pretty busy.  Hope to receive a call from him this weekend.  :-)

  • sbarber

@Christa So glad he's adjusting well. My son said the base was fairly quiet tonight so thats a good thing normally you can't even hear them on the phone for all the noise. So I enjoyed our talk today since I could hear him LOL gosh still miss him badly though. :-(
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

I know what you mean, sbarber!  I miss my son too.  Good to know about the noise factor.  LOL!
  • sbarber

@Christa its horrible OMG you want to talk to them so badly then you get aggrevated because you can't hear them ugh.... its always something lol. P.S. Love oyur name by the way my daughters name is Krista :-)  Yo would think after 4 and a 1/2mth it would be easier but it really isn't.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Thanks sbarber!  Some days are better than others for me... but it definitely has not gotten any easier since my son left either.
  • ydeza

  • Denise - browns57

My son had his PIR on Friday, we had a great afternoon & evening with him.  His flight left Saturday morning at 6:30AM we made it to the airport for a quick hug & goodbye and to give him his cell phone.  He text me when he arrived in Ft. Worth along with calling his sister. The last I heard from him, he was on the bus from Jackson, Missippi to Merdian.  Hope to hear from him again soon.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Congrats to you and your Sailor brown57!  My son has been in Meridian for a week now.  He starts his AZ training this week.  What is your son's job?

  • sbarber

@Colby'sproudmom: Welcome aboard my son is loving MS. Me too lol I can talk to him now YEAH!!!!! They are so excited to get there and then they can't wait for that green dot for off base liberty :-) although they say the mall  leaves something to be desired. They love going to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch football and have a good time. They went to the fair this weekend also and I hear there is a bar on base and a bowling alley so I'm sure he will love it.
  • Denise - browns57

My son is loving have Liberty these last 2 days after getting there.  I saw he had made comments on facebook earlier today.  I received a text msg from him, he said he had an address he would be sending to me and a list of things he wants me to ship to him.

@sbarber - you are so right, he told me about the green dot yesterday and BW3's, he is so missing his football!

  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Welcome, Colby'sproudmom!  I'll keep you posted on the AZ training.  My son is suppose to begin his training on Thursday.

My son has not mentioned the green dot.  Is that part of the phasing up they have to do?  He did mention three different phases he has to go through in order to wear his civies, leave base, etc.  As for football, he said that he has been able to watch a few games in his mod while ironing and polishing his boots.  I have to admit, I cannot imagine my son ironing while watching a football game. LOL...  ;-)

  • sbarber

@christa: Yes the green dot if for off base librety lol I sent my son a box of his clothes overnight lol he couldn't wait to get on civvies lol his roommate let him borrow some jeans OMG. I get such a kick out of just thinking about my son ironing LMAO he couldn't even find the laundry hamper when he was home. Seems like only yesterday we were getting ready for PIR but now he's been in MS a little over 3 weeks. They are so funny.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

I can so relate, sbarber!!  I mailed a box of clothes to my son this past Saturday.  This afternoon he sent me a text message requesting additional items.  LOL...  It is nice to watch them grow from boys to responsible men.  This has been quite a transformation and yet it is only the beginning.  :-)
  • sbarber

Good moring I hope everyone had a great weekend. Just wanted to pass this along seems some people are having problems with the dry cleaners there not removing stains etc I think we need to let them know it's not moms laundry room lol they aren't looking for the problems on the uniforms the guys need to make those known to the dry cleaner so they aren't having to purchase new uniforms, they get so used to us doing everything sometimes they need a little reminder that mom's not there to take care of everything. It didn't happen to my son just someone that he knew and the young man thanked me for sending my son the tide stain stick lol. Have a great day.
  • Denise - browns57

When mailing a box to your sailor, what service has anyone used?  My son said something about Fedx or ups but being married to a USPS employee I tend to always use the postoffice.  My son said something about there not being a postoffice on base.
  • sbarber

I sent mine UPS the big brown sorry I don't believe they have a "post office" per say but it was very reasonable and fast.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Uh, oh!  I mailed things to my son via USPS.  Hope he gets them!  YIKES!!
  • sbarber

@Christa I'm sure they will get there :-) no worries LOL thats a minor detail considering what we have to look forward to.
  • Denise - browns57

I went ahead and mailed my 25# box qith the USPS! Everything he had asked for is in there except for one tshirt I couldn't find.  He should have the box next Monday or Tuesday.  Keep your fingers crossed it doesn't get lost in the mail.
  • sbarber

@brown57: I'm sure it will arrive just fine and he will be one happy sailor :-)
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

I just spoke with my son.  He received the box of clothing I sent to him.  He was in good spirits and waiting in line to get his hair cut.  It does this mom's heart good to hear from her Sailor.  :)

  • sbarber

@Colby'sproudmom: They can have Xbox's, computers, etc I don't see why he couldn't have that if your concerned have him as his Chief but, I'm betting the answer is yes he can.
  • sbarber

@Christa: Must of have been haircut day lol mine got one yesterday too. And its fan freaking tastic to hear from them so much more often now but, this is spoiling us we will start all over with the no contact when they get deployed :-( but that'll be awhile so I'm just going to enjoy it while I can.
  • sbarber

So my husband just called me some of you may know this but we own a truck and he drives cross country well guess who's going to be in Meridian MS tomorrow seeing my baby NOT ME ugh I'm so jealous but happy for them. NOT FAIR!!!!!!!
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Note to self:  When hubby is sick, check electronics being packed for shipment to son.  Otherwise, DVD player will be shipped in place of the video game system.  LOL...
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

I know exactly what you mean, sbarber!  All too soon our Sailors will be deployed and communication will again slow to a snail pace.  Like you, I plan to enjoy this additional communication as long as it lasts.
  • sbarber

@Christ OMG that made me laugh thank your husband LOL bet your son was surprised to say the least LOL I bet he and his roommates were looking forward to that gaming system LOL dang men.............

@Colby's mom :-( yeah indeed but I am happy for them. It's just our time with him was so short they lost his medical records so Friday after PIR he spent hours running them down and he flew out pretty early Saturday and after being in Great Lakes for 4mths I feel cheated you know....I miss him so much :-(

Sorry guys I needed to vent thanks for letting me.

  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Yes, sbarber he was definitely surprised!  I received a text message from him earlier today that read, "You mailed me the blu-ray player..."

LOL... so NOT what he was expecting!

  • sbarber

@Christa Omg your making me laugh THANK YOU. How funny I bet he was like what the he{{ is going on are they crazy lol. ;-)
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

LOL... yes!  I am sure he was wondering.  :)
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Hubby is referring to the incident as "The Epic Fail".  ROFL!!!  Boys and their toys!  LOL!!!
  • TXMom

Hello All, My sailor arrived in Meridian, MS last night after 11 months in GL (medical hold etc after Basic).  He sounds like he has landed in Heaven. He flew from OHare to Atlanta, then from Atlanta directly to Meridian. If you have sailors flying directly to Meridian, they just need to be prepared to take a cab from the airport. My son, said it cost $23 bucks.  He also said the staff at the base was ready for him and he got into his new barracks with no issues.  They toured the base this morning and he said it is very nice! In his barracks, there are four "bedrooms" each with three beds, a private bathroom, microwave and fridge.  There is also a common living area with a flat screen TV.  He did say the base is in the middle of now where (which we all knew) but that the facilities are great.  I know this may be alot of information for those of you with sailors already there, but for those of you have sailors going to Meridian, I thought you might find this useful.   I don't know about the Liberty Phases yet, I think he has to Phase up again, as he had full Liberty at GL (cause he was there sooo long).
