Hi, everyone! My son PIR'd yesterday and left for Meridian, Mississippi at 6:45 this morning. He is scheduled to begin his AZ training on October 11. I'm so excited to learn more about this part of his journey with the US Navy.
Hi, cvargo! Thanks for the welcome! The Pass-In-Review graduation ceremony was a wonderfully moving experience. I continue to stand in awe of the men and women who sacrifice their lives for our freedom!
My son sent me a text message with his new address. I plan to send him some civilian clothes tomorrow. (I met him at the airport the morning after PIR to give him his cell phone.) Haven't had a lot of contact with him yet, but I understand he is pretty busy. Hope to receive a call from him this weekend. :-)
so bored in meridian i wish can go back to VA this town is so boreeeeed.no where to go, movie theater is sucks, the mall is really small, base is small, not many stores, weekends or football game at the H.S or R &B club saturday and is nothing there.and now husband have to work two weeks nigth and two weeks day, a 63 years old guy robbed a bank and left on bike is the bigger news in this town,OMG
@Christa its great for us mom's compared to boot camp surely he will call this weekend even if he has watch its only 4hrs so I bet you hear from him. @ydeza it is very different isn't it small town America I hear the fair is in town LOL. Have a good night ya'll.
@Christa So glad he's adjusting well. My son said the base was fairly quiet tonight so thats a good thing normally you can't even hear them on the phone for all the noise. So I enjoyed our talk today since I could hear him LOL gosh still miss him badly though. :-(
@Christa its horrible OMG you want to talk to them so badly then you get aggrevated because you can't hear them ugh.... its always something lol. P.S. Love oyur name by the way my daughters name is Krista :-) Yo would think after 4 and a 1/2mth it would be easier but it really isn't.
Hi sbarber well for me living in Va for 11 years is a big different not many places to take the kids the fair is on town not big deal that is what even locals say is not that big,but is the best thing we can hav this weekend plus H.S football every friday sitll is bored,we planing a trip to new orleands next weekend so we'll see how's that work, about the town is not but is just small and bored
My son had his PIR on Friday, we had a great afternoon & evening with him. His flight left Saturday morning at 6:30AM we made it to the airport for a quick hug & goodbye and to give him his cell phone. He text me when he arrived in Ft. Worth along with calling his sister. The last I heard from him, he was on the bus from Jackson, Missippi to Merdian. Hope to hear from him again soon.
@ydeza is your spouse an instructor? Hope you guys can adjust it will just take time, I was just the opposite I grew up very small town MO lol like 700 ppl then moved to TX and WOW 175,000 plus so I can just imagen its not to fun for ya"ll.
@browns57 welcome aboard, the bus ride is a few hours long then he will have indoc and get all settled in but it sure is nice getting the extra contact boot camp was definately an eye opener and just getting us ready for deployments I'm sure with the no contact LOL
@Christa good morning so glad a few more people are joining our little group it was really quiet on here LOL
Ya'll have a great day I'm going to go to the crafters show at the Civic Center for a few hours. Talk to you soon.
@Colby'sproudmom: Welcome aboard my son is loving MS. Me too lol I can talk to him now YEAH!!!!! They are so excited to get there and then they can't wait for that green dot for off base liberty :-) although they say the mall leaves something to be desired. They love going to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch football and have a good time. They went to the fair this weekend also and I hear there is a bar on base and a bowling alley so I'm sure he will love it.
My son is loving have Liberty these last 2 days after getting there. I saw he had made comments on facebook earlier today. I received a text msg from him, he said he had an address he would be sending to me and a list of things he wants me to ship to him.
@sbarber - you are so right, he told me about the green dot yesterday and BW3's, he is so missing his football!
Welcome, Colby'sproudmom! I'll keep you posted on the AZ training. My son is suppose to begin his training on Thursday.
My son has not mentioned the green dot. Is that part of the phasing up they have to do? He did mention three different phases he has to go through in order to wear his civies, leave base, etc. As for football, he said that he has been able to watch a few games in his mod while ironing and polishing his boots. I have to admit, I cannot imagine my son ironing while watching a football game. LOL... ;-)
@christa: Yes the green dot if for off base librety lol I sent my son a box of his clothes overnight lol he couldn't wait to get on civvies lol his roommate let him borrow some jeans OMG. I get such a kick out of just thinking about my son ironing LMAO he couldn't even find the laundry hamper when he was home. Seems like only yesterday we were getting ready for PIR but now he's been in MS a little over 3 weeks. They are so funny.
I can so relate, sbarber!! I mailed a box of clothes to my son this past Saturday. This afternoon he sent me a text message requesting additional items. LOL... It is nice to watch them grow from boys to responsible men. This has been quite a transformation and yet it is only the beginning. :-)
Good moring I hope everyone had a great weekend. Just wanted to pass this along seems some people are having problems with the dry cleaners there not removing stains etc I think we need to let them know it's not moms laundry room lol they aren't looking for the problems on the uniforms the guys need to make those known to the dry cleaner so they aren't having to purchase new uniforms, they get so used to us doing everything sometimes they need a little reminder that mom's not there to take care of everything. It didn't happen to my son just someone that he knew and the young man thanked me for sending my son the tide stain stick lol. Have a great day.
When mailing a box to your sailor, what service has anyone used? My son said something about Fedx or ups but being married to a USPS employee I tend to always use the postoffice. My son said something about there not being a postoffice on base.
I went ahead and mailed my 25# box qith the USPS! Everything he had asked for is in there except for one tshirt I couldn't find. He should have the box next Monday or Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed it doesn't get lost in the mail.
I just spoke with my son. He received the box of clothing I sent to him. He was in good spirits and waiting in line to get his hair cut. It does this mom's heart good to hear from her Sailor. :)
@Colby'sproudmom: They can have Xbox's, computers, etc I don't see why he couldn't have that if your concerned have him as his Chief but, I'm betting the answer is yes he can.
@Christa: Must of have been haircut day lol mine got one yesterday too. And its fan freaking tastic to hear from them so much more often now but, this is spoiling us we will start all over with the no contact when they get deployed :-( but that'll be awhile so I'm just going to enjoy it while I can.
So my husband just called me some of you may know this but we own a truck and he drives cross country well guess who's going to be in Meridian MS tomorrow seeing my baby NOT ME ugh I'm so jealous but happy for them. NOT FAIR!!!!!!!
Note to self: When hubby is sick, check electronics being packed for shipment to son. Otherwise, DVD player will be shipped in place of the video game system. LOL...
I know exactly what you mean, sbarber! All too soon our Sailors will be deployed and communication will again slow to a snail pace. Like you, I plan to enjoy this additional communication as long as it lasts.
@Christ OMG that made me laugh thank your husband LOL bet your son was surprised to say the least LOL I bet he and his roommates were looking forward to that gaming system LOL dang men.............
@Colby's mom :-( yeah indeed but I am happy for them. It's just our time with him was so short they lost his medical records so Friday after PIR he spent hours running them down and he flew out pretty early Saturday and after being in Great Lakes for 4mths I feel cheated you know....I miss him so much :-(
Sorry guys I needed to vent thanks for letting me.
Hello All, My sailor arrived in Meridian, MS last night after 11 months in GL (medical hold etc after Basic). He sounds like he has landed in Heaven. He flew from OHare to Atlanta, then from Atlanta directly to Meridian. If you have sailors flying directly to Meridian, they just need to be prepared to take a cab from the airport. My son, said it cost $23 bucks. He also said the staff at the base was ready for him and he got into his new barracks with no issues. They toured the base this morning and he said it is very nice! In his barracks, there are four "bedrooms" each with three beds, a private bathroom, microwave and fridge. There is also a common living area with a flat screen TV. He did say the base is in the middle of now where (which we all knew) but that the facilities are great. I know this may be alot of information for those of you with sailors already there, but for those of you have sailors going to Meridian, I thought you might find this useful. I don't know about the Liberty Phases yet, I think he has to Phase up again, as he had full Liberty at GL (cause he was there sooo long).
@TXMom: We are from Tx too :-) you got me beat LOL my son was only there 4 months due to a knee injury. And he has been in MS now for a month. He really likes it there and he said the same thing about the staff and the cabs. He was so excited to earn liberty so I know that your son will be as well it will be hard for him having to start that all over :-( hope all goes well and welcome to our little group.
@Christa: Hope the hubby is feeling better and you get your dvd player back real soon. My husband and son had a really nice visit Saturday, it almost didn't happen though my son had a tough time finding a liberty buddy since it was in the afternoon when my husband got there but it all worked out. The local cab co. was even trying to help us out LOL he went door to door mod to mod until he found someone. But it all worked out :-)
My son received his box of clothes yesterday which worked out perfectly for him, he also had received his green dot. I saw a picture of him on facebook with a regular tshirt and shorts last night. He then sent me a text msg asking if I could send him a couple other things. So off to the postoffice on my lunch hour.
@Christa do you just wonder what they are going to do with all this "stuff" when they have to pack up and fly out???? I sure am LOL we have raised a generation of instant gratification kids LOL what have we done. Poor hubby will now have to replace the blue ray player now ha ha or maybe he really meant to do that...humm food for thought LOL So I had to send a box of "FOOD" to my son can you imagen that oatmeal, ramen noodles, tuna, snacks, blah blah blah oh and don't forget bowls, can opener etc....... I mean really. He said that the food isn't as good as boot camp and they get tired of Subway OMG what have we done. But it was still cheaper for me to send than him to take a cab to Meridian and back and go buy it for his self isn't that horrible. And they get a "DISCOUNT" OMG really $25 one way????
@brown57: That's good timing glad it all worked out so well. I know he's a happy camper. Get used to those trips to the post office. I'm telling ya geeze. 3 hots and a cot my booty :-) momma still has to worry about them :-)
@sbarber, I had the same thought, that he is going to have to ship all this stuff home or purshase another duffle bag, if that's even an option. The first box I sent him was a dell computer box stuffed full, the 2nd was alot smaller box. He has purchased a laptop since he has been there and a few other items I'm sure. He had thought about asking for his Wii but has opted for it to say at home. I think he is thinking about getting everything back home and consentrating on his classes. His LS school should be only 5 to 6 weeks long, he is thinking he will be home by Thanksgiving. I am hoping for that too since my daughter & her boyfriend won't be home for Christmas. Thanksgiving might be the only holiday when we will all be home. Who knows where my son will be at Christmas. I hope my oldest son, daughter in law & granddaughter are planning on being home for Christmas. This will be our first year without one of the kids at home.
My son hasn't said anything about the food, I will have to ask him the next time I talk to him.
@Christa - So if your son is keeping the DVD player does he still want the game system?
@browns57: The holidays are going to be tough for all of us no matter what and I fear thats not going to change even if they are all home for the holiday they still have to leave. I know that they can buy an extra duffle bag LOL but they are going to have to learn to down size LOL or at the very least prioritize (hope I spelled that right) My son got the box of food yesterday and he said "It's GREAT" poor thing happy about dry goods. That's sad.....
Question. Our Grandson is graduating from basic this Friday, Oct 28. Can he bring his cell phone and lap top computer to A School? His dad seems to think that he cannot have those items until he has been at the Meridian, MS A school for 3 weeks. However, everyone else on Navy for Moms say it is o.k. to give your sailor his or her cell phone and or lap top at the airport. Anyone have
@Carolee: I'm sure his dad is just passing along what he has heard, all of the A schools are different and some have to earn their devices just like their liberty. But happily as NYFan has said our kids in MS get them right away. Welcome aboard and glad to see ya'll have made it to PIR I have seen you on RTC's facebook page :-) it's a great experience all be the time with them afterwards to short. Have a greeat day.
@Carolee - My son is in A school for logistics also, he arrived there 10/08, we made it to the airport in time to give him his cell phone before he flew out which was nice. He texted me all day as he was traveling and then called later to say he had arrived. It was a long day for them. Bussed to O'hare at 2:30AM, flight left at 7:00AM, layover in Ft.Worth, flew to Jackson, MS, bussed from there to Meridan.

Carolee,
We gave our son his laptop and cellphone at the airport on Saturday morning after PIR.
They are allowed to have them right away.
Hope you are going to PIR, it is wonderful to see the new sailors. A proud moment.

Hi sbarber. Thanks for replying. Isn't it great that we can go from the RTC's facbook page to the A school face book page.
Do you know how many different A schools they have at Meridian? Our sailor will be training in logistics. How about yours?
