@TXMom: We are from Tx too :-)  you got me beat LOL my son was only there 4 months due to a knee injury. And he has been in MS now for a month. He really likes it there and he said the same thing about the staff and the cabs. He was so excited to earn liberty so I know that your son will be as well it will be hard for him having to start that all over :-( hope all goes well and welcome to our little group.

@Christa: Hope the hubby is feeling better and you get your dvd player back real soon. My husband and son had a really nice visit Saturday, it almost didn't happen though my son had a tough time finding a liberty buddy since it was in the afternoon when my husband got there but it all worked out. The local cab co. was even trying to help us out LOL he went door to door mod to mod until he found someone. But it all worked out :-)

  • Denise - browns57

My son received his box of clothes yesterday which worked out perfectly for him, he also had received his green dot.  I saw a picture of him on facebook with a regular tshirt and shorts last night.  He then sent me a text msg asking if I could send him a couple other things. So off to the postoffice on my lunch hour.

  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

HA! HA! sbarber!!  I think my son has decided to keep the DVD player.  :-)
  • sbarber

@Christa do you just wonder what they are going to do with all this "stuff" when they have to pack up and fly out???? I sure am LOL we have raised a generation of instant gratification kids LOL what have we done. Poor hubby will now have to replace the blue ray player now ha ha or maybe he really meant to do that...humm food for thought LOL So I had to send a box of "FOOD" to my son can you imagen that oatmeal, ramen noodles, tuna, snacks, blah blah blah oh and don't forget bowls, can opener etc....... I mean really. He said that the food isn't as good as boot camp and they get tired of Subway OMG what have we done. But it was still cheaper for me to send than him to take a cab to Meridian and back and go buy it for his self isn't that horrible. And they get a "DISCOUNT" OMG really $25 one way????

@brown57: That's good timing glad it all worked out so well. I know he's a happy camper. Get used to those trips to the post office. I'm telling ya geeze. 3 hots and a cot my booty :-) momma still has to worry about them :-)

  • Denise - browns57

@sbarber, I had the same thought, that he is going to have to ship all this stuff home or purshase another duffle bag, if that's even an option.  The first box I sent him was a dell computer box stuffed full, the 2nd was alot smaller box.  He has purchased a laptop since he has been there and a few other items I'm sure.  He had thought about asking for his Wii but has opted for it to say at home.  I think he is thinking about getting everything back home and consentrating on his classes.  His LS school should be only 5 to 6 weeks long, he is thinking he will be home by Thanksgiving.  I am hoping for that too since my daughter & her boyfriend won't be home for Christmas.  Thanksgiving might be the only holiday when we will all be home.  Who knows where my son will be at Christmas.  I hope my oldest son, daughter in law & granddaughter are planning on being home for Christmas.  This will be our first year without one of the kids at home.

My son hasn't said anything about the food, I will have to ask him the next time I talk to him.

@Christa - So if your son is keeping the DVD player does he still want the game system?

  • sbarber

@browns57: The holidays are going to be tough for all of us no matter what and I fear thats not going to change even if they are all home for the holiday they still have to leave. I know that they can buy an extra duffle bag LOL but they are going to have to learn to down size LOL or at the very least prioritize (hope I spelled that right) My son got the box of food yesterday and he said "It's GREAT" poor thing happy about dry goods. That's sad.....
  • Carolee

Question.  Our Grandson is graduating from basic this Friday, Oct 28.  Can he bring his cell phone and lap top computer to A School?  His dad seems to think that he cannot have those items until he has been at the Meridian, MS A school for 3 weeks.  However, everyone else on Navy for Moms say it is o.k. to give your sailor his or her cell phone and or lap top at the airport.  Anyone have

answers to my questions?  Hope so.

  • NYfan A School

    Carolee,

We gave our son his laptop and cellphone at the airport on Saturday morning after PIR.

They are allowed to have them right away.

Hope you are going to PIR, it is wonderful to see the new sailors. A proud moment.

  • Carolee

Thanks for getting back to me.  Yes, we are going to PIR.  We are very excited.  I am sure it will be very emotional.  Carolee
  • sbarber

@Carolee: I'm sure his dad is just passing along what he has heard, all of the A schools are different and some have to earn their devices just like their liberty. But happily as NYFan has said our kids in MS get them right away. Welcome aboard and glad to see ya'll have made it to PIR I have seen  you on RTC's facebook page :-) it's a great experience all be the time with them afterwards to short. Have a greeat day.
  • Carolee

Hi sbarber.  Thanks for replying.  Isn't it great that we can go from the RTC's facbook page to the A school face book page.

Do you know how many different A schools they have at Meridian?  Our sailor will be training in logistics.  How about yours?

  • Denise - browns57

@Carolee - My son is in A school for logistics also, he arrived there 10/08, we made it to the airport in time to give him his cell phone before he flew out which was nice.  He texted me all day as he was traveling and then called later to say he had arrived.  It was a long day for them.  Bussed to O'hare at 2:30AM, flight left at 7:00AM, layover in Ft.Worth, flew to Jackson, MS, bussed from there to Meridan.
  • Denise - browns57

@ Colby''sproudmom - I'm not sure what the deal is for Thanksgiving.  We had thought our son would be finishing A school and home for his two weeks just in time for Thanksgiving but now my son is telling me he may be done sooner, if thats the case he will probably miss both Thanksgiving & Christmas. So only time will tell for sure.
  • Carolee

Browns57.  Thanks for the information.  Boy, we are going to have to get to the airport early.  Do you remember what time you got there?

Does your son like logistics?  Where is home for you?  Our grandson is from Murfreesboro, TN (outside of Nashville) and we live in Kerrville, TX (an hour west of San Antonio).

  • sbarber

Colby'sproudmom If he has phased up to a green dot then he can have off base liberty as well as over night liberty he just has to get his CHIT in and your golden. I love A school so much more contact which is wonderful, enjoy PIR it's great but I hear its getting chilly up there.

Carolee There are several schools on the base there in Meridian they have a neat little website you can check out if you just Google it. I didn't realize you were a fellow Texan...we are from Amarillo. My son is in Yoeman school there in MS his is a little longer than some as he is designated to a submarine so he will be there a few more weeks.

browns57 Don't give up hope for the holidays just yet as we all have learned anything is subject to change in the military and he could get to go ahead to his duty station and miss Thanksgiving but get his CHIT in for Christmas. Never give up hope.

  • Carolee

Hi Colby'sproudmom,  How long has your son been at Meridian?
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Sorry I have not posted in a while.... We've been really busy and then I got sick too boot!

sbarber and browns57, my son decided to keep the blu-ray disk player.  And, of course, my hubby sent him the video game system as well.  LOL... I don't think my son has given a lot of thought as to how he will get all of this back home.  Guess he'll cross that bridge when he gets to it. LOL...  :-)

  • sbarber

Christa (Proud Navy Mom) : Glad your feeling better. Well my son called last night and ask how to cook shrimp on the grill so I'm guessing the chow hall wasn't looking to good yesterday LOL. I bet yor son's room is a popular one TV, DVD and the Xbox that's too funny.

Colby'sproudmom: Wow what a small world huh. There are just a couple of us from Amarillo on here and we have coffee once in  awhile and chit chat, we went to Tx Roadhouse a few weeks ago for the America Supports you Texas fund raiser. Hope your son enjoy's MS and I know you are looking forward to PIR its a great experience. Let us know how it goes and if you'd like to join our little group send me a friend request and I'll keep you posted.

  • Denise - browns57

@ Christa - Glad to hear you are back to feeling better, I guess getting all that stuff home or where ever will now be our Sailor's problem and on their dime!

  • Video R's Mom

    - Hey all!  I am new to this blog.  My son just arrived on the 22nd.  I am looking forward to his new stories and how they differ from boot camp.  YAY!
  • sbarber

Video R's Mom: hello and welcome, his whole life has changed since bootcamp and he's a happy camper now LOL
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Welcome Video R's Mom!  Glad you found us!!

  • Video R's Mom

Thank you for the warm welcome. My son called last night. It is always like Christmas when he calla. I really didn't think I'd miss him so much. But I would not change a thing. 'This too shall pass.' hmm.
  • Denise - browns57

Welcome Video R's Mom! My son has been there since 10/8, he will be a LS.

@colbysproudmom - Have a great time at PIR.....enjoy and get some great long waited for hugs!

  • Denise - browns57

@Carolee - I'm sorry, I hope you also have a great time at PIR tomorrow, enjoy seeing your grandson.
  • Carolee

Our grandson is a Sailor! Yea!  Found out that their flight leaves for Meridian, MS at 11:00 am on Sat.  with a layover at DFW.
  • sbarber

Carolee: Congrats we all can see just how proud you are of him and rightfully so. He will enjoy his time in Meridian especially after where he's been LOL the bus ride from Jackson to Meridian is a beast from what I hear since they are exhausted anyway.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and stays warm. It snowed here today officially 3.1 inches where we live almost 5. BURRR!!!!!!!

  • Carolee

sbarber:  BURR!!!!! is right!  Where do you live?
  • sbarber

@Carolee: We are form Amarillo. I bet your super excited this morning waiting on your grandson to PIR so you can talk to him. Tell him Congrats from us fellow Navy moms and tell him to enjoy the day.

  • Denise - browns57

@abarber = my husband thought I was crazy when I said it had snowed in TX; he was stationed at Ft. Hood when he was in the Army.
  • sbarber

browns57: Hahahaha well we made national news, my brother in law is stationed at Camp Pendelton and he called and ask if we were snowed in :-) I have nephew stationed down at Ft. Bliss right now and our son will soon be leaving Meridian for CT :-( IDK how active their group is all these changes. Hope everyone had a great weekend we did my hubby(truckdriver) was home saw the grandbabies so it was nice.
  • Denise - browns57

@Colby'sproudmom - I'm glad you git to spend time at the airport with your son.  Our sons flight left so early we didn't have much time.

@sbarber - when is your son leaving for CT? Did he get his orders or is it still apart of his A schooling?

  • sbarber

browns57: He has his orders but he is still in MS for a few more days :-) he said they had a good day today and were watching movies tonight. I told him to enjoy it i have heard horror stories about sub school UGH.....the internet has TMI for this mom. How is your son adjusting? Bet he's loving it :-)

Colby'sproudmom: The USO is a great thing isn't it. The staff at O'Hare are fantastic and you would think the Navy thing would get old to them but it doesn't seem that way there. Your son is going to love A school there, there is so much to do depending on his age they have a bar, bowling, liberty center etc. etc.

  • sbarber

Woot woot!!!! My son passed all his modules and test (with an average of 90) and is now in TPU which means he has nothing to do but help out as needed until he flies out to his next school in Groton CT. He is so happy and I am so proud of him. He is especially happy no PFA tomorrow LOL I told him well enjoy it I hear BESS (sub school) is like bootcamp IT and he just snickered IDK what they have done to my son but the transormation is AMAZING.
  • sbarber

Colby'sproudmom: LOL that's great glad he will get to so something on his birthday. And so glad they have that stuff on base the cab ride to town is ridiculous like $25 each way UGH..... and LMAO my son said the same thing about the bed but, that will be short lived LOL.
  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

LOL Colby'sproudmom and sbarber, my son said the same thing about his mattress!
  • Denise - browns57

@ sbarber - does your son get to come home for liberty before going to his next school?  If I understand my son correctly once he finishes his A school he will get his orders but get to come on for a couple of weeks.  We are hoping for it to be around Thanksgiving.  If so we will celebrate an early Christmas before he leaves.

  • sbarber

browns57: No he doesn't get to home home between schools but it's gonna work out so he will be hoome for Christmas since he did his A school his sub school is only a month long so before his 1st duty station he gets leave :-) YEAH so happy I can't wait to see him it's been too long as some of you know he was injured at RTC and his bootcamp was over 4mths long so that Friday afternoon and Saturday morning just hasn't cut it for me :-0 i need to see my son. It also means that he has more leave available since he was at RTC so long. Yeah again.... And I told my family all the same thing Christmas will be whenever your brother is here PERIOD!!!!! Noone argued with mom LOL

Colby'sproudmom: I hear ya girl any time is better than no time. However tell him to ask around there is a program called recruiters assistant in which they can get not only more leave put on their books but also get to stay home longer and not lose all their leave time. ******Thats something for everyone to take note of by the way :-)*******

@ Christa : Where you been girl???? You get you a new DVD player yet ;-) hope your doing good keep in touch.

  • Denise - browns57

@ Colby'sproudmom - I think that program is called RAP, my son had also mentioned doing that and saving some liberty....I guess we will wait and see.

  • Denise - browns57

@ sbarber that will be great that your son gets to come home for Christmas and spend some time since he has been gone so long.
  • sbarber

browns57: Thanks I can't wait LOL and I know the leave thing is really cool my son's recruiter is the one that told me about it after he found out my son was injured and staying gone so long after bootcamp. I thought that was pretty cool of him :-)
  • Denise - browns57

Hope all is well for everyone.  What a switch, yesterday my daughter received a box from my son.  He sent her two Navy t-shirts & a hoodie.  He sent me a Navy Mom t-shirt along with a I love my sailor magnet.  I can't wait to wear my new shirt.

  • sbarber

browns57: Aaaaw how sweet see they really do love each other LOL I know we all think at times they don't. And geeze he could've saved that for Christmas what sweeety pie, that or he wasn't thinking LOL JK.

  • Denise - browns57

I plan on wearing my new Navy Mom shirt to work on Friday for Veteran's day! My son posted on facebook that he only has 4 more modules to complete, hoping to maybe graduate a week from Friday.  Were just hoping he gets his orders in enough time to fly home for Thanksgiving.

  • Christa (Proud Navy Mom)

Hi, everyone. Sorry I have not been on here in a while.  I am still here... just been extremely busy lately.  My son asked us to come down to Meridian over Thanksgiving.  We are looking so forward to seeing him!!  YEA!!!!!

sbarber, we have not gotten a new blu-ray disc player yet.  Too busy to even watch movies... LOL!

browns57, too sweet!!!  And what an awesome thing for your son to do!!!

  • proudflamom

My son will pir on this friday and was wondering if he will have liberty after he gets to a school there in maridian on saturday. Im just trying to decide if we should fly there on saturday too after graduation.

  • Denise - browns57

Welcome proudflmom, I'm glad you found this group.  After my son pir he flew out early Saturday morning.  It was great that we got to the airport in time to give him his cell phone.  He was able to text me as he was traveling to Meridan & we were traveling home.  The fly into Jackson and then take a bus to Meridan.  He did have liberty on base Sunday & Monday.  I don't believe your son would beable to leave the base until he phases up and gets his green dot.  I do not know what the rules are for you going on base.

  • Denise - browns57

@sbarber, Did your son leave for C School yet? My son is still hoping to finish next week & grduate but no orders as of yet.

  • sbarber

Hello browns57: yes my son is in CT at sub school now :-) been there since the 4th still hasn't classed up maybe the 20th they are telling him. He should be getting his orders very soon maybe its the holidays messing everything up. Let us know what happens.

proudflamom: She is correct about the liberty, they have to earn it. I don't even know if you would be allowed to go there that soon. But who knows maybe call their PAO and ask it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Christa: Hey girl what are you going for Thanksgiving??? sounds like fun get the blue ray while your there LOL.  Girl I hear ya about being busy good grief time flies. Have a great visit and a safe trip and tell us all about it when you get back :-)

  • Denise - browns57

My son finally got his orders, he is headed for a Frigate in San Diego.  He still hopes to be home next week but said he would not know until the day before.  I can't wait to pick him up at the airport.  I do hope he males it for Thanksgiving since he will miss Christmas.
