Does any one know when we are able to see our sons and daughters after they get to A school? I live in gulfport ms and I would like to see him as soon as I can!

  • Alison(LS A school)

Seashell, this is a quit group. I would love to hear the feedback your daughter gives about Meridan. Lets liven this group up!
  • Alison(LS A school)

@SeeShell, have you been able to talk to him since he's been there?

  • Sgknavymom

Hi everyone our son has been in 10 years. I joined this group because as a mom ( also a navy Brat and sister ) I understand how you feel. I live in the meridian area. My dad retired for the Navy here and we stayed. I will be glad to help in any way. Answer any questions. I often see these young men and women in town still in uniform and in pairs or groups. I usually stop and tell them thanks and talk to them a little while. So let Know if I can help. Our son has a cpl of navy buddies stationed at the base here that we take to eat and visit with. Anything to make these heros feel At home. Go Navy.
  • Alison(LS A school)

@sgknavymom thanks so much for your kindness. I am hoping to make a trip out there for a weekend while my son is in school so I might reach outnformadvice on where to stay. I figured I better come there to see him before he gets his break after schooling is over because I am sure during that time he will want to hang out with his friends.
  • Alison(LS A school)

Sorry ro hear about his slip, I hope he heals quickly. What has he been doing during this time he's been waiting for school to start?
  • Sgknavymom

Hope This Encourages all of you....
Our son has been in 10 years...He loves the Navy...He is presently on a ship somewhere off the coast os Yemen...Yes we worry and pray....But knowing he loves what he does is a lot of comfort......In his 10 years he has been around the entire globe.....spent a year in Afghanstan (with a Army unit)......He has made the best of each station ....My advise to young sailors is to think hard about thier choices of stations.....and make the most of thier time serving our country.....

  • Alison(LS A school)

Sgknavymom, sounds like good advice.  I have been trying to pass that advice to my son and tell him he joined to Navy in part to see the world so take advantge of it while he is young and single.  I hope he is happy with his choices like your son has been...blessings to all!

When I went to visit my daughter we spent Friday and Sat in Pennsacola :)
  • Nise615

My son will be attending A school in Meridian MS after his PIR date of 11/30.  Can we visit him right away or do we have to wait for him to receive a green dot?  Can you explain the green dot to me?

  • navyboy2012

Hello Nise615! My son is in Meridian and graduated last wednesday. He leaves tomorrow to go to Groton for sub school. Green dot is phase 3 liberty, my son said he should get it after a week of being there. Phases tend to go pretty fast and is nothing like boot camp. They have a lot of freedom in A school. You should be able to visit right away but if you wait till he is in phase 3 he can go off base. Also in phase 3 they can stay overnight off base only on the weekends but he will need to get a chit and turn it in before thursday according to my son. Hope this info helps you!

  • Sonya

Good morning everyone.  My son is in LS school.  He graduated boot camp on 11-2-12.  I am really excited to belong to another group.  He likes in there and said they finally have a bit of freedom and independence   I guess he will be in indoc until after Veteran's Day and then school begins.  When do they get orders so I will know where he gets his duty station?

  • GodFavorMe(TreMom)NORFOLK

can someone tell me what is indoc? And how is ls school in merdian mississippi is it like bootcamp?

  • marmee4 (alumni mom)

Hello GodFavorMe(TreMom) - my son has been in Meridian for a month now.  He is on the airmen side of the base and is housed with Marines.  He was a bit fearful at first, but now really likes living and training with them.  InDoc was 5 days where he got to know the layout of the base, base rules and regs, uniforms in order, housing in order.  It is not at all like boot camp - he said he and his friends would ask people about bed times, free times, etc, and they would laugh and say "this is not boot camp".  They are limited and do have to be in quarters by 9:45pm, but if they do not have duty, they can go to base movie, bowling, tv  and computer time.  They can also have a few civilian outfits, and their phones.  Biggest plus right now is it is still warm in Mississippi!!!  Last weekend his wife was able to visit for the weekend, and he was allowed to leave base from Fri at 5pm until Sunday at 9PM.  Best of luck to your sailor and I hope they also enjoy their time at Meridian

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

This is good news. I was wondering. My son goes to basic Dec 4th and then to Meridian for school.
  • Mrs. David's mom

Lita, I see you're from Texas.  I hope your son can adjust to the weather in Great Lakes rapidly.  Chicago in winter is a whole 'nother world!  Luckily all the work out facilities are indoors.

marmee4, what is your son in training for.  David was also on the airmans side with the marines.  He is an AZ.

    durrichShip03/DIV354, I love your picture!

  • marmee4 (alumni mom)

Mrs. David's mom - my son is AZ also

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

Yeah my son will probably go through culture shock. He is AZ also. I hope our sons find each other and help each other out.
  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

Mrs David where is your son now? Did he finish A school?
  • Alison(LS A school)

Question for people in Meridian. Can you use your own sheets on the bunks? Just trying to think of things that I could send my son when he gets there.
  • Mrs. David's mom

Lita, David graduated A school in April.  He was top of his class and got first pick of assignments.  He chose a helo squadron based in San Diego.  He chose helo's because "... they go more places than fixed wing aircraft."  And he chose SD because; 1) he's a hard core Chargers fan, 2) his friend that he enlisted with is based there, 3) he's a hard core Chargers fan, 4) we are orignially from that area and have a lot of family around there, and 5) even though we move to Arkansas when he was in 2nd grade, he's STILL a hard core Chargers fan.   He had a couple weeks leave after A school, when that was over he left to join the squadron already on deployment on the USS Abraham Lincoln.  They returned in August and he's been in SD since.  He enjoys his job, keeping the books updated.

It's been one years since he left home for boot camp.  Navy life has been good for him.

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

David's mom. You are making me feel so good right now.
  • Mari'smom(ship09,div327)

Anyone have a daughter at Meridian right now? My daughter graduated A School last Friday. She said she is going to San Diego and be assigne to the USS Bunker Hill. I was wondering how long she may still be staying in Meridian! I would love any info!

David's mom - I have never been to San Diego, but it sounds good to me!

  • bittersweet914

Just got word that my fiancé will be attending A school here instead of Pensacola now. I’m excited because Meridian, Mississippi is only 4 hours away from me. I look forward to meeting new people. Also, he graduates boot camp on the Dec 21st will he be allowed to bring a cell phone and laptop to school? Thanks!

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

Yes. They said we can bring cellphone and laptop to graduation already. He has to be able to fit it in his black bag. I'm assuming they issue them a bag or have them purchase one.
  • Alison(LS A school)

Can they put on their own bed sheets at Meridian? I heard that's something they enjoy. If so, anyone know the bed size? I am assuming std twin size?
  • durrichShip03/Div354

We gave our sailor his cell at the airport in Chicago and mailed his laptop once he had his address (he had it in 2 days) - Remember they are EXTREMELY busy once they get there with orientation - first 5 days.... as for their own sheets? I don't think so but it DOES get chilly there and some people buy xtra blankets @ the NEX.....

  • Mandy

My hubby has been in Meridian for 2 weeks now.....after spending a whopping 12 weeks in Great Lakes!!! Waiting to find out his permanent base is driving me crazy! I just need to know so that I can research the area and make plans. Is anyone else going crazy from the wait?

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

Tell us about Meridian please. What can they have? Is it nice?
  • navyboy2012

The SR's can pretty much have anything, from phone to a car. For my SR he went out and bought everything he wanted. It seems that they have to much freedom in Meridian, if you understand what I mean by that. MY SR loved it there was never a dull moment and made lots of friends. The town is actually quite a few miles from the base. My SR spent every weekend in town at the mall or on a road trip. They can put weekend leave chit in so they can spend the time away from the base over night.

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

    That sounds awesome. Thanks
  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

What size sheets? I think someone earlier in the post was asking.
  • navyboy2012

Twin beds! Twin beds every where!

  • navyboy2012

Just thought I would say in case you didn't know, you can got to NTTC Meridian on facebook and see pictures of what its like there. They post the graduation pictures there for those that aren't able to attend when time comes. The page does give you a little insight into somethings they do there.

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)

Lol. Twin it is. I will check out that site. Thanks
  • Alison(LS A school)

Thanks for the info on Meridian. Certainly a big help.
  • marmee4 (alumni mom)

ny son graduates from "A" school tomorrow and leaves Meridian on Wed.  Thanks to all for the help and support on this site.  We are going into our next phase - San Diego!  If I can be of any assistance to any of you, just message me.  It's been fun and went by really fast

  • Lita (DIV 083 SHIP 13)
