My son went to Lajuene, was working in the hospital until one day he called me to say that he and 11 others were being pulled to finish out a class, and he was in FMTB the next day. So, things can change quickly. That was in 2005, the last time he wore a "real" Navy uniform until Nov of 09 when he became an instructor in San Antonio. He packed those other uniforms around until he was deployed, tho. Now the uniforms have changed and they still hang in the closet hardly worn. I can't call him until later this afternoon, but I'll ask him. Seems like one of the jobs he gets sometimes is handling those guys waiting to class up for something.
  • Dan's Dad (John)

My son was on hold at CL for 71 days prior to FMTB. He worked at the BAS and wore his blue camis most of the time, if not all. I don't know if he ever wore his peanut butters but I'm pretty sure he never wore his dress ini. I'm sure he brought it all with him though. Now that he's graduated all I 've seen him in were the Marine tan camis, I think they've changed over to the green woodland now though.

Missy, my son is with the 2nd Marines too, MAC

JLC, go to the official FMTB-West website (the link is above) - there is a list of items your son is required to bring. Click on "Students," then" FMST Course Students/Welcome Aboard," and you'll see a list of links including "Required Gear List." The page starts with "All personnel will report with a full Sea Bag" which tells you what uniforms to bring. By the way, when he checks in he has to be in dress uniform.
The FMTB-West website shows what he'll be doing. You can also see the five blocks of classroom curriculum.

You ladies are the best !!!! Sure wish I had you ( or even this site ) when my son was going through FMTB a few years ago : ) Hey, I have you now that's what matters : )
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Ta-daa! The official complete sea bag inventory http://www.npc.navy.mil/CommandSupport/USNavyUniforms/UniformRegula... - all $662.40 worth (E1-E6 anyway).
  • TexasDocMom

Advancement list out...and my son's name is on it! E5, HM2.

Who else got word on this?
  • Pam

Congratulations to your son TexasDocMom!! Wonderful news for you!!

JLC - just wait until your son comes home on leave the "seabag" explodes! It was like a clothing bomb went off in my son's bedroom.
  • TexasDocMom

Thank you and yes to the exploding sea bag! what a sight!!

Ladies, this is the first time he's been within driving distance for a promotion. What's the deal with the ceremony? would it be silly of me to want to go? I would love to see it, and get some shots of him in uniform with his peers. But....what say you experienced moms on this ?
  • TexasDocMom

He has to tell me about it! So I hope he does! It's only 70 miles from here, I plan to bring this up a couple of thousand times over Thanksgiving.
  • TexasDocMom

Thank you all for your good wishes! I find it interesting that he refers to it as "E 5" It's listed as HM2 in the list...and on his actual name. E5 is the pay rate, you know what matters!! I know he's pleased, but he's modest about recognition, awards and such..."it's my job, mom". that's it. I have to drag things out of him! He was okay with us coming to his PIR and that was it...no more. He said the other grads were celebrations for those who had worked to do it. But this is close! I want to go!!
  • TexasDocMom

Ruthella, how exciting for you, especially the ceremony just for your husband, that's just cool. Good for him and for your son as well.
  • TexasDocMom

    Congratulations to your son, Ruthella!
  • Tamijzr07

Hi TexasDocMom, where do you find the advancement list?
  • TexasDocMom

The Navy Times has it Tami, just click the link!
  • Tamijzr07

Thank You :) I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving day tomorrow. It's our first with out our son home but were hoping to hear from him :)
  • Tamijzr07

I just check out the link. It was so helpful. Thanks again :)
  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Congratulations TexasDocMom! I'm fairly new to the group and have been on it before. My son is in A school and I think if all goes well, he should be graduating either the end of February or the beginning of March. And yes, I will be there for graduation and any other ceremony he has! I think it's great that families attend any ceremony they have! We are truly proud of our Sailors! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I can't wait for Christmas though. My son comes home!!
  • TexasDocMom

Well, I don't know if I'll get to go "I don't know what they are going to do...I only go because they make me...I'll get pictures if you can't come, Mom"...various forms of responses to "I WANT TO COME TO THE CEREMONY!".

He ate huge amounts of dressing, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy....and loaded up most of the left overs, thank goodness....and headed home before the Texas game, after making a menu request for Christmas! I love boys.
  • TexasDocMom

Camosock.com for your Corpsman Christmas Stocking!
  • TexasDocMom

And that's one reason that Field Corpsmen are known as the "toughest mofos around"...per more than one Marine to me....good for him!
  • TexasDocMom

Jacqueline...he has to tell me when it is...there's the catcher. This week he's in those classes they take when they are promoted. He'll be here this weekend. I made myself clear on Thanksgiving, he started mumbling something about pictures of the ceremony...and I said "I'll take my own photos". To be fair, some units have a big deal ceremony, some do not.
  • Tamijzr07

Congrats Ruthann! I hope you get your Christmas Wish :)
  • Pam

Jacqueline - We were in St. Augustine (just south of Jacksonville and Amelia Island) last February and it was record breaking cold!! If you love history, St. Augustine is one the neatest places we have been. Those armadillos are like rats. And they're slowly moving up into our area - Atlanta.

Our Sailor will be home for Christmas but two days after, I have to let him go for two years [Naples, Italy]. Trying not to let it get to me, but boy, it's hard. My husband actually told our son the last time he was home that it's better when he stays away because the goodbye's are too hard. And we knew he was going to be home in 8 weeks that time.
  • TexasDocMom

So, I will not whine that my son will be doing Christmas Eve and morning with the new girl friend's family and then come to dinner here. I think he thought he might get out of it by saying "it's our 6 month anniversary" . I gave him the Mom look. "SO?" and he said "Ham and Cheese potatoes for Christmas dinner?" and I said "of course". HA!
We have been very blessed that he's been home every Christmas...sometimes that was the only time in a year, and only for a few days, but still he was here!. I put it to the timing of his enlistment. He went in in Sept and that set it up for the holidays off. I think.
  • TexasDocMom

My son just called, he just had rehearsal for his promotion ceremony, which is at 6AM tomorrow morning! He has to be there 4:45...do the ceremony, get his photo taken and then go to work. SUCKS.

I will get photos. He said all those being promoted are really pissed. No pinning ceremony, just do it and go on.
  • TexasDocMom

He said there were "a ton" of people, they walked up and got their envelopes and only two family members made it there at 6 am.  He said last night there would be a photographer, but I forgot to ask him this afternoon.

He left there and then went to Camp Bullis to teach his class, or whatever his assignment is this school go round.

  • TexasDocMom

AK, I will confirm a photographer when I have photos!!  Thanks to all of you for your support!

  • eurekamom

Hi, I'm new to this group.  Our son will be "choosing" orders (based on class ranking) Monday.  He has it narrowed down to three he's pretty excited about.  Any advice based on your son's/daughter's experience?

  • eurekamom

He's color-blind so there are lots of "fun" assignments he can't have.  What he's hoping for is attached to Riverines, Seabees, air wing (if he can), FM or hospital ship.  I have mixed feelings.  I want him to be challenged and feel fulfilled, but I fret a little too..... what a whiner!

  • Pam

eurekamom - Our son is also color blind and your right, he is limited in what he can do in the Navy!  However, that's not going to stop him for spending the next two years in Italy working at a small clinic outside of Naples.  His choices at Graduation were Hawaii, Japan, Italy, FMT, or Jacksonville, FL.  He was 9th to pick.  Currently he is finishing up FMTB at Camp P and will graduate this Thursday.  He comes home for the holiday and then heads to Italy on Dec. 27.  He plans on touring Europe as much as he can!!

  • Pam

Cheryl - HC is a fourteen week course.  12 weeks of intense study and then two weeks of clinicals.  The FMTB is 8 weeks of hell!!  Just kidding - it's really not that bad.  The Marine's are very intense with their training of the next "Doc," but it's all part of being a corpsman.  Jamie said there were several Fleet Returnees in his A School class.  Sometimes it helps being a little more mature.  Jamie just turned 21 and still gets homesick, but he's enjoying everything.  While he's been at Camp Pendleton he has toured San Diego and Los Angeles.  He never would have done that had he not joined the Navy.

Eurekamom - it's very hard to cut those strings!  They will definately need moral support in A School.  It's a pretty advanced course that takes a lot of initiative and studying.  And on top of that, they have to keep their barracks spotless.  Which isn't the easiest thing to do when you have three or four Sailors sharing a space.  Jamie failed two room inspections the first month he was there.  Needless to say, he took the bull by the horns and made sure he passed from then on out.

Hi all! My fiance is still in DEP but he got his job recently at MEPs. He wanted a mechanical job but hopefully this works out for him. Or at the least something else comes up.

Praying for all your sailors! Hope you can spare a pray for mine =)

  • eurekamom

Only four more days until we see our son!  Can't wait!

  • TexasDocMom

Good for you Eurekamom! Have a Merry, merry Christmas!!

  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Hi everyone! Haven't been on here for a long while.  My son came home for the Christmas holidays on Friday!!! I was so happy to see him. He looked wonderful. I haven't gotten to spend a full day with him but it will come; He was off to see his friends and today to see more friends and his dad.  He moved in with me before BC so at least I get to see him at night! I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas!

  • TexasDocMom

I just love hearing all about these sailors coming home!! Have a great holiday!!

Remember those in war zones this week...including those in the waters and boots down in Korea....any moms with kids in those areas, please feel free to stop by our group for those deployed in Iraq/Aghanistan...we welcome all of those with that knot in your stomach that comes from a child in a war zone. You are not alone.

  • Pam

Our son made it home last Thursday and will be with us through Christmas.  He just finished his FMTB training with the Marine's.  So glad that's over!!  This may be the last Christmas for us to spend together.  He leaves for Italy after the holidays and will work in a clinic in Naples (Capo) for a two year duty.

  • LindaB(Ant'sMom)10/15

Hi everyone. I have a question about graduation from A school. My sailor said that he should be graduating either March 1st or 2nd. I read that it is about 1/2 an hour and I plan on attending.  What happens after graduation? Do they go back to their base or can they spend the day with us? Do they ship out to their next destination, which mine will go to San Antonio. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Hubby can't go with me to graduation so I'm going solo!

  • TexasDocMom

Hey, Linda, where and what will you son be doing in San Antonio?

  • Pam

Linda - My son's graduation ended around 11:00, but only becuase they had to be briefed on what to expect next.  He didn't get his orders for leave until two days after graduation, then it was a mad rush to get flights changed to return home.  He'd been gone since April and it was now October, so he was very anxious to come home for a visit.  Yep, that lasted about three days before he started missing his structured life!!!

Which C school is he going to in San Antonio?  I know Surgical is there.  Just wondering!!

It's Christmas Eve in South Austin...and in Afghanistan and Iraq. Just take a moment, close your eyes, and send that thought or prayer for a quiet holiday for them, and phone calls for their families. And truly, Peace on Earth. Please, Peace on Earth.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years everyone!

TexasDocMom,Pam-Corpsman Mom and JLC Corpsman Mom, sorry I haven't responded sooner. Just enjoying my sailor home with me!  He is going to San Antonio for Psych Tech training. I guess my question really is, when he graduates in March, does he get overnight liberty or does he have to stay at the base. I ask this because even though it's a couple of months away, I want to prepare for how long I need to stay. If he's going to leave the next day, I'll fly out then as well.  Thanks for all your help.

I hope you all had a great Christmas!

    Hi to All MOMS! :)

My son is in his last few weeks in Chicago in training then off to CA.  anybody have any advise for what I should expect during his time with the Marines out there! LOL

  • TexasDocMom

Nancy, the links above the discussion forum include links about FMTB and FMF. Be aware...FMTB is training. FMF is a classification and is earned while serving greenside, and not everyone gets it. My son has drilled that into my head, he lurks here occasionally and when he spots it, he tells me once again!

My son loved FMTB...after it was over...he went from my lanky sailor to a big man, hard legs from carring a 250 lb dead weight at a full run around for endless hours. Field corpsmen do live in somewhat of a no man's land...not Marine, not "real" Navy...but the Marines with my son on his first MEU handled the sailor that thought he could screw with their Doc because he wasn't a "real" sailor. He wouldn't give my son an email address to use onboard ship...only "real" Navy got those, he told my son. The Marines with him told the CO. He got an email address and a apology.

  • nancynavymom

Ladies, thank you for all the great information! That is kinda what I had been hearing as well, he is actually in great shape, and is looking forward to the Physical part, (he is a little weird! LOL) Nice to know I once again have Mom's in the same place, I love this site! Talk to you all again soon, have a great day!
  • Emilie

TexasDocmom- can you explain the FMF classification? I am guessing that after the FMTB training they are classified as FMF or ???? Thanks for your time. My son will be at CL classing up in March.
  • TexasDocMom

Most corpsmen coming out of A school take the FMTB course, enabling them to serve greenside with the Marines if needed. It's the training. If they go blueside, serving as corpsman in Navy facilities, they do not have the opportunity to earn the FMF classification (altho I'm assuming there are other classifications they earn...) Only corpsmen that serve with Marines EARN the FMF classification. Not all qualify for it.

"Being book- or street-smart alone isn’t enough to make it as an FMF corpsman. You have to be both because being with Marines means always thinking outside the box, way outside the box. " quote from the FMF web site posted above.

I have websites posted above about the FMF classifcation and FMTB training (both east and west coast sites). Please take a moment to read over them.

Someone asked me what my son did in the military and when I said "field corpsman" he almost choked...and said "Those guys are the toughest mofo's around"...that's the difference between a new corpsman and a FMF Doc. Battle experienced, tough sob's. It's hard to think of my sweet little blonde boy like that, but I've learned. He's a miltary professional, and he's a tough mofo. Who knew?

  • Emilie

Hi TexasDocMom - thanks for the info. I did my reading as you suggested. This helped a ton!

So my son is assigned to Camp Lejeune, he will attend FMTB training, if he qualifies he will be assigned to a battalion, and if he does all of the qualifications earn the FMF classification?
