A handful of schools, Thomas Edison and Excelsior among them, are liberal in granting Nukes credit for the pipeline. When going into the Nuke filed post Navy ABET accreditation is important. Many colleges across the country have a hard time granting Nuke credit because the syllabus and course material are classified.
A Nuke is a Nuke. Those at a training command have seven day work weeks rotating around the clock. Seven days, seven afternoons, seven midnights, etc. Lee took two on line Calculus classes while in NY. The workload in the fleet is not much different.
LOL Mary I was just thinking the same thing..... dont want it to be Winter yet.... but could they just let us know how its going :)
Yes Good luck everyone....

We live in the south so November is actually nice here :-)
Ha! I'm thinking it will be November. I have not heard any updates but I would love to know how many applications they received and how many will be selected.
Mary, I'm curious about that also..... in looking at previous years there seems to be a pattern of every other year having more applications - but I cant seem to put my fingers on all those figures right at this moment..... but if pattern holds then this year should be a lower # of applicants....lol I've found 06 607 qualified aps for 210 spots, 09 595 aps for 210 spots 10 715 aps for 226 spots. I"m at work now so better get back to work instead of checking for updates..... :)

Thanks for the links, looks like our son did not make it this cycle. He was prepared for that when he applied, I only hope he stays motivated and gets to work on his new application package.
oops, sorry I should have posted where to find it.... thank you Whitney - and Congrats to those who made it and good luck in FY 12 for those who didn't - keep trying!
Mary remember every year its a new set of people looking at the packages. Something that might not have impressed them this year may look out standing next year. The people who apply change every year too, thus meaning your package may be in the middle of the pack this year but next year could be one of the best. Good luck for those applying next year!
granjanr, his first choice is Oregon State University - We had checked out their Nuclear program prior to Aaron deciding to join the Navy. Great program and closer to home ! Plus we love the OR coast. how about your son?
Carol, He owns home in VaBeach so will most likely stay there and go to Old Dominion. We would have loved for them to come home to Texas for three years at A&M or UT, but it's not very practical or cost effective. Currently an IS1, as a core selectee, he'll get the chance to select his officer service area his senior year.
If my nuke sailor is just filling out his application for STA-21 now, when do you think his expected start date would be, if accepted? Do the applicants hear only once per year...in Oct or Nov? Or are there rolling start dates? Obviously, I am new to this site....but glad you are here!
Hi - the application is due by July 1st ( or is it end of June?) and the results are announced Oct/Nov. There is a good page to check out- https://www.sta-21.navy.mil/ read through the fleet brief - explains the process for you.
Good luck to your Sailor!
I thought the packages were due by June 1st but additions to the application were allowed up to July 1st.
Our son did not make it this round but happy to hear that as a result he enrolled at the University where his command is to beef up his credits for the next application :-)
I will be following the stories of the new selectees with great interest.
Mary - glad to hear your son is working on beefing up his credits - good luck to him this time around!
Here is what the sta-21 page said in the faq about deadline -
Q: When is the earliest/latest that I can submit my application?
A: Complete and qualified applications (must include ACT/SAT scores) can be submitted as early as possible, but not later than 1 July. Personnel submitting applications early will have an advantage over those submitting late, because they will be able to review for any discrepancies, and will have sufficient time to correct their discrepancies
Thanks Carol,
I think the June 1 date stuck in my head because his ship deployed that date so that meant everything was escalated and he had to his interviews and prepare his package early before the ship deployed.
The right thing, Normally results are out in Oct the 2010 results were out in NOV because the navy didn't know what there budget would be and could not spend money (give the STA-21 go ahead) with out those numbers. This year they came out in Oct, with about 45% less in the program then in previous years (because of fiscal cut backs).
I know the DB got his application in the middle of May. They needed some notarized copy of something which would have made his package incomplete, he was able to correct that.
Nope, not here... Bummer. But He just made e5 last year and has only been in for 4 years so I guess that ok. I'm not even sure if he was eligible but he hasn't been in fleet for 8 months.
Our son will be advancing to E5, he scored in the 99% of his rate. He is very pleased on how well he did on his test. We were so glad to hear that he will advance this cycle since he did not get selected for STA 21 this round but hoping the more college credits, E5 and his ESWS pin will help on his next application.
So is everything coming together for NSI in Feb? Aaron is getting excited! He has to bring his run time up though.... still waiting on his physical to be approved also...but he got approved for his 1st choice of College! :)
Lee celebrated five years in the Navy yesterday. His first semester grades were very good and he is now an academic Sophomore. It was great
having him home for the Holidays. School starts again on the 13th.
From talking to some of the NSI graduates, it seems they all enjoyed the experience. The importance of PT should be taken very seriously. A
very capable candidate in Lee's class was dropped because he missed the
run time (after several attempts) by less than ten seconds.
What colleges did your sailors pick? Will the next round of STA-21 applicants hear yes/no next October? Or do different sections of the Navy (nukes, IT, etc.) start at different times? Thanks!
Brady trained his butt off getting ready for NSI. He went from a mix of excellents and outstanding to all outstanding by NSI time.
Brady took 23 hrs this semester and winter classes (If he wants to walk in graduation he must graduate in May '13 which is 6 hrs early so he's trying to make them up. He's a sophomore with 40 some credits.
Brady is at University of Arizona in Tucson. Gorgeous weather!!! He likes it here. Because of budget cuts in the NAVY there is only one class of NSI they cut the program nearly in half. All the sections start NSI at the same time, Brady was a rescue swimmer and is a pilot option. He roomed with a nuke who was going to be a nurse or something like that. Those applying for 2011 will need to turn the stuff in by late spring early summer, and they should hear in OCT unless the budget isn't set.
Glad all the guys are getting prepped for NSI. Our son got his official orders on Monday on his return from holiday leave. I got to visit them in VaBeach for Christmas and New Years and they surprised me with the news that he had applied for and been accepted to Texas A&M. Whoohoo!, he's coming home to Texas!! Instead of a 2-1/2 hour flight, they'll only be a 2-1/2 hour drive from family and friends. Now all they have to do is sell their house...no small feat in this economy, but I'm sure everything will work out for the good.

Yes Aaron got his wake up call and is running a lot now. He is fine on sit ups and push ups - has always maxed out on those.
