Mail requirements are the same in RCU (Ship 4 Div 2341 formerly Ship 6 Div 2341). They are still in bootcamp and all the bootcamp rules apply EXCEPT that they get to call home with status updates. Mine called once a week to let us know what was going on. Mine did not join a new division but finished his final test, Damage Control, final PFA and BS from RCU so he did not PIR. He was in RCU for 5 weeks due to a knee injury. There is another group that has more posts/members but it is under the Ship 6 Div 2341. You might search out that group and join it just to look at old posts to see what to expect.
Write, Write, Write and encourage your SR!!! GOOD LUCK
Does this affect his rating - he's supposed to go to IT in Pensacola for A school. Thanks for answering my questions - a week away from PIR - it's just so surprising and awful for him! I'm trying to regroup and make sure he knows we're supporting him.
It didn't affect my sailor's rate at all. He ended up on hold for a few weeks after Battle Stations for a waiver BUT the delay was mostly due to the Tennessee floods last May as orders come out of Middleton Tennessee and the base was under water. Mine finished Battle Stations on April 30, 2010 and made it to Goose Creek the first week of June.
TN Navy mom - when you say that he didn't PIR - did you get to see him before he went to A school - chicago is much closer to me that FL and I'm not sure my 13 yr old daughter (broke both bones in leg) can make a trip to FL - she misses her brother so much - and so do I!
when she got to BC she was on a different ship but she has been on ship four since May 14th or 15th, yah I worry about the emotion state, but how do they expect them to get better if they have to continue to do strenous exercises such as jumping jacks. leg lifts, and climbs
mama~ Trust that after 100 years the Navy has a plan! I know it seems senseless but it not that the RDC's do care. All the SR's have Dr. orders for what they are allowed or not allowed to do. My SR had PT everyday some in a pool some not. She did NO exercise or walking at all! You see the Dr. weekly and if you get to feeling to low there is a counselor there as well. My daughter was so broken emotionally but I’ll tell you that’s a very big part of boot camp. If your SR is doing physical activity that’s a good sign! Your SR will want to get out of there fast and WILL!
Sharon - No, we did not see our son before A school. He completed all of his final requirements from RCU rather than re-join a new division. He was week 5 day 1 and was a seciton leader in his division. He knew, at that point, that to join a new division with only 2.5 weeks of training left, he would be an outsider and would not have the time to adjust to a new division or know his shipmates.
We cancelled our plans and reservations and learned a valuable lesson about military life, just because it's what we want, doesn't mean we get to see them when we want and we have to be ready to make changes to our plans.
My sailor was married at the time, so once he arrived at A school and had his indoc and housing briefs, he came home for 3 days to get my DIL and move her to SC. That was the only time we saw him until he graduated from A school and took 10 days leave.
mama bear - ditto what Parrothdgal says. The doctors will NOT release them to training until they feel that the SR is ready. Mine had a knee injury and was not allowed to run or jumping jacks, etc. He could do crunches and some pushups. When he phased up in his therapy, he could work on the elliptical until they released him to put pressure on his knee.
Sharon how are you doing? I'm worried about you have gotten very quite! I know hoe hard all of this is on a mother and a SR. Have you heard from him and when is PIR the 8th?
I finally heard from my SR yesterday - he's still in RCU. His original PIR was 7/1. He only has to do the run and B/S. He says he will not PIR. Just graduate and go to A school. He hopes to run on Friday. The 100th anniversary pictures were wonderful - bittersweet, though, I'm proud of all the Sailors and proud of my SR for hanging in there - even when the going is tough. Thanks for thinking of me.
Thanks! I was able to see my Sailor at GL and at the Airport yesterday! How wonderful he is! I will keep praying for all who are still working towards graduation -- they can do it! Best to all.
I have a SAILOR she called this afternoon and said she made it. Now what, she said she is in a holding area, she said she will get a liberty day but not sure when. Do we get to see them before they go to A school or do they have to wait until they get there, I don't know how to plan.
mama bear so happy for you I'm a newbie lol my son is in RCU 4/2341 as we speak how was it really for your sailor? How long was she there if you don't mind my asking? Lots of ?'s not many answers from my son, but, I guess boys will be boys. Congrats again. If I understand and thats a big if she will now go to Ship 5 THU and wait I don't know if they get liberty or not sorry.
Hello sbarber, my daughter was in RCU about just under 3 months but depending what he is in there for will depend on how long he has to stay. She had stress fractures in her legs at the point of breaking so she was in there longer than some people, and I she said some people had been there longer than her. Tell him to remain strong it will get better. Always build his self esteem up if you can when he calls, and send lots of mail because they need something to keep their mind strong and spirits up.
mama bear, Wow that was a long time I hope you get to see your sailor soon. Congrats to her and to you as well that was a long haul. :( I have been writing alot and printing things off of his facebook page to keep him entertained lol. I so hope to hear from him tomorrow and find out what his doctor said. I don't know if I could stand him being there that long I guess if I had to I could but ugh.... its nice to hear of the positive stories so thank you for sharing it with me. Best of luck to your daughter as she begins her career and you as well. sbarber
mamabear - congrats to you and Bravo Zulu to your new Sailor!!!
sbarber - keep writing - my son said that he'd never felt so special in his life as when I wrote him every day in BC - I wasn't sure if he'd even get the letters, I just kept writing ( and so did the dog, when I ran out of things to say!) - he was in RCU and FIT for 12 days total - not sure how much of each. I heard that average is about 2 weeks. Just keep saying "You CAN do it!"
dreak70, my son has said the boredom is horrible just tell her to keep studying and do all she can do in her therapy attitiude is everything to the therapist and doctors, tell her to stay positive, my son has been there 6 weeks at least 2 more to go since he's phase 4 in his therapy. They do get to call home every weekend so you can stay updated on her progress. Keep it positive no matter what she will need your strength. P.S. it was my son's knee's as well so they can heal they can move on we just have to keep on standing there beside them. :-)
tell her she can do it my daughter did it and she was there for almost 3 monthswith stress fractures in her femurs, lower shin, and top of foot also has pain in her hip. Keep writing tell to put some little positive saying in each letter also send her something that will give her a laugh or put a smile on her face. As along as she does her therpy she should be able to phrase up and heal
dreak70 - I've read so many amazing stories here and in the FIT group about SR's healing and becoming Sailors - so inspiring. Keep writing and praying! It will happen!
just found out my son is in recovery for stress fractures in both legs. he's now in ship 4 div 2341. will know more when he calls this weekend. anyone know how long an injury like this takes to recover from? do they get to graduate later or discharged?
WestonsMom: My son was in RCU for 7 weeks with his knees, he went back to a Div and PIR'd well he will PIR on the 16th with a new Div, he had a girl he enlisted with that had a similar problem and she was sent home its all up to the SR and their healing process as well as their attitude. The length of his stay will depend on his recovery and whether he PIR's or just does Battle Stations 21 out of RCU depends on where he was in his training. I wish you both the best of luck keep us posted and keep lots of mail going to your SR while he is in RCU my son said that was a life line as they have NOTHING else to do but physical therapy and NOTHING but remember they are still in boot camp and boot camp rules still apply. He will call you every weekend find out all you can then and be happy your getting to hear his voice.
My son has just been put into this division because of a fracture in his knee. Is it typical that they are there as long as they say? I am worried about him but know he will get through it.
yes my son has been there since Aug 4. Still has 3 weeks to go for stress fractures in his shins. But recently found out that they were actual breaks not stress fractures so the added another 4 weeks of rehab. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Oh, don't be sorry! It is what it is and they will heal, move on, and become Sailor's. I can't believe your son had actual breaks, that is terrible and to only find it right now. Hopefully the boys can meet and be cheerleaders for each other. Sounds like your son has a great support system and an awesome mom.
Kassie - my sailor was in RCU last year. They told him 4-6 weeks to heal from a knee injury and he was there for 5 weeks. When my son phased up in his treatment to LLD, he was allowed to finish his final academic test, then when he was FFD (fit for duty) he did damage control, gas chamber, final PFA and Battle Stations. He finished everything from RCU without joining another division as he was only 2.5 weeks from the finish line when he was sent to RCU.
I actually believe that he pushed himself to finish before his knee was fully healed BUT healed enough to finish, then he spent 5 weeks in THU (Temporary Holding Unit) before getting his PCS orders to Goose Creek. His 8 weeks of Navy Bootcamp ended up taking a few days over 4 months BUT he's a sailor and that's all that really mattered to him in the end.
Sending good luck healing vibes to your SR. Those RCU recruits usually do stick together. Mine is still in contact with some buddies he made in RCU.
Kassie I hope they do meet and Colten can be someone he can turn to here in the beginning. COlten is a 1st class Petty Officer in the div he told me what his job was but I didn't really understand. Hopefully Colten will be out of there before the end of October. He finished upo his Firefighting when h\was in phase 4 before they found that he was actually broken not just cracked. SO all he has left to do is BS21 final written test and final PFA. Hang in thee we are all in the same boat just at different stages.
WestonsMom - my sailor did not participate in PIR. He was over 6 weeks into bootcamp and had formed pretty good bonds with his division. He was Section Leader and Flag Bearer in his own division and felt that waiting in RCU for 5 weeks, then joining a new division would be less appealing than just finishing up and getting out of there. He felt that if he joined a new division, he would be an "outsider" and wouldn't form the "work together" bond that he had before. PLUS he was terrified that if he re-injured the knee, he would just be separated from the Navy and sent home.
He updated us with letters as he completed tasks and then SURPRISE! one Friday afternoon as I was driving back to my office from the bank, my cell phone rang, I picked it up and there he was sounding beyond exhausted. I just asked what was up (expecting an update on his progress) and he said that he was at the NEX and just had an energy drink then "Well I did it" and I made him say the words, "Mom, I'm a sailor". Driving, crying and talking on the cell phone are not a good combination but well worth it!
westonsmom you will get that call no matter if its out of RCU or with a unit have no fear about that :-) and thats one call that goes to the parents period those are orders LOL
@westonsmom The poor thing I am so sorry to hear that, he's just having such a tough time bless his bones. But it will end soon at least you have that to look forward to :-) and phase 4 thats good 2 weeks left in RCU with no further complications that is and then you will have a sailor. Tell him to feel better soon and we are all praying for him.
thank you, I will. He's been sick with a cold just about the whole time now so this was no surprise. I know everyone else has been sick at least once but I wonder how common it is for someone to have at least a cold the whole time? The main thing we're concerned with now is if he re-injures himself trying to pass the medical PFA. He told me he's gonna take it easy and not try to push it too much. He said if he re-injures himself he'll get discharged after he heals. And of course he threw in the "you don't have to tell me that mama"! LOL
Thank you! TN Navy mom I am going to print that off and send it to him. He is so discouraged because he said it seemed like most everyone was there longer than the original time given. Colten's mom, I will give him an idea of who your son is and hopefully they will meet and he can encourage my son to get out of there shortly after yours ; )
Weston mom Your son will probably out of RCU before Colten he still has 3 weeks to go. It is good thathe is moving right along.
Now I have a question for you moms with kids out of RCU. How long were they in THU before getting new orders? Colten said he could be there from 2 days to a few months a8nd with the holidays approaching who knows if they will have a spot for him at Nuke school before the first of the year.
My son was in THu only 2 days. btw- he's in A-school now and says his time in RCU and FIT helped him to face the challenges ahead - he wouldn't change a thing!!! I don't think he has a clue how the stress aged his poor mother though! I do have confidence in him and the Navy that he's ready to meet whatever is thrown his way. The "I am a Sailor" phone call was one of the proudest moments of my life. Keep the faith, encourage your SR and believe that the Navy wants their success.
Sharon- WHere did your child go to A school? I am glad to hear that it helped him I believe that it has helped Colten as well. I believe that all things happen for a reason. I am so glad +thatyour soin is doing well. Yes I agree with the whole aging the mom thing I found gray hair the other day .
Mine was in THU for 5 weeks (even phased up to civvies while there!!!). BUT it was just bad timing!!! The orders had to come out of Middleton Tennessee and he finished Battle Stations about 3 days before the mighty flood hit Tennessee and the base a Middleton was under water and evacuated. Once it was back up and running, he was low on the totem pole as there were sailors with more urgent needs for orders, so he waited in THU. Was made Yeoman and got liberty every weekend, worked a few PIRs and marched in an Armed Forces Day parade outside of Chicago.
The trick was on him though, once he got to Goose Creek, he had to start at Phase 1 again and no civvies!!!
So once a SR goes into RCU are their orders reassigned? My son got his orders weeks ago. I wonder if they will change now? TN navy Mom... what is "ciwies"?
Westonsmom his orders will probably be put on hold or changed yes because he can't be moved to his duty station as scheduled as long as he is in RCU and civvies are civilian clothes the kids love getting to put back on normal clothes and out of the military wear when they are on liberty and it is an earned priviledge.
