Well he has 3 schools to attend A school is 12-14 weeks, then Power school 24 weeks then prototype school is 24 weeks then he has to do some specialty training that is 8 weeks it is in South Carolina for the most part. Prototype school is in Balston Spa New york. THey say it takes about 2 years to complete and he will have most of his BS degree in Nuclear Engineering when he finishes.
Are you planning on going to see Weston once he gets to THU?
I am going to see Colten as soon as I can and then we will be with him at Thanksgiving. whether he comes home or we go to him. Then hopefully they will get to come home for Christmas!!!
Colten's Mom - my sailor was in RCU last year for a knee injury. He is in Goose Creek now and will "class up" to Prototype this month in Goose Creek but a lot of his buddies are going to Ballston Spa. What will his rate be? Mine is an MM.
That post Battle Stations call is the SWEETEST!!!! Especially when a sailor has spent time in RCU and the uncertainties there. I'll light my blue candles too!! I honestly believe that suffering through RCU has made my sailor a stronger person overall and he has an affinity for those sailors who really have to fight to complete bootcamp.
TN navy mom....thanks! my son said he thinks this happened so he would appreciate it more and I have to agree. :) I believe things happen for a reason.
TN NavyMom He is an MM I think. He said he was not sure and every time he asks them about it he gets yelled at asked why he needs that info now he is not on his way there now. SO he quit asking a long time ago. He said he would find out when he needed to know that info. He doesn't as many questions. I had heard that they were sending alot of them to Ballston Spa. I had also heard that they were keeping primarily the married sailors at goose creek so that they didn't have to move families. I can't wait for him to get out of boot camp. Everytime we think we are getting close there is another delay. I agree that RCU makes them stronger and ready to take on what the Navy throws at them.
@Weston'sMom: WHOOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How u should be exciting is that OMG you should be getting a call today that is such good news. I know you can type and talk so you let us know as soon as you get the "I'm a Sailor" call
@Donna: I hope that means Colten was doing it with him. I know your ready too.
Hope everyone has a great day and we have a few new sailors today. :-)
type on here and talk while I'm getting the "I'm a Sailor" call???? No way! lol I'll be so excited I'll be lucky if I can TALK to him while crying! I will definitely let you know right after though! I'm so excited I just can't stand it!!!
Dumb question I'm sure. Do the recruits have access to writing materials like they had in their original ship? Or do I need to send envelopes, paper, etc. I know I need to keep him supplied with stamps. Thanks.
well ladies...6pm I got a call from Weston. He said he had good and bad news. I said oh good lord, what is it? He said well it looks like I'm coming home a little sooner than planned. I said what do you mean? He said well, I'm going to CA. I was like what do you mean?? He said I have to go to CA cuz.... I'm a Saailorrrr!! OMG!!!! Let's just say we both had a good hard laugh as I was crying AND calling him a few choice words! lol I HAVE A SAILOR!!! WOO HOOO!!! Praise God he finally made it!
@WestonsMom; YEEE HAAAWWW!!!!!!!!!! Congrats so happy for you I know you can't wait to see your son. And he's gonna be close to home that's wonderful. I'm so happy for you BOTH finally onto a new journey in his career. I know it was one of my happiest too. Can you PM me Westons last name so I can tell my son the good news.
@Donna: I know it's not want you wanted to hear I know you were looking forward to seeing him hopefully when he calls you he will have word on a new PIR that's fantastic too. It's a great experience to witness after all "we" all have been through. I left everyone in the dirt getting to my son on the parade floor I know you will too.
sbarber...Thank you! Yes I can't wait to see him and to hug him so tight! And to rub his precious head where there used to be a whole bunch of hair! And then i'm gonna smack his arm for scaring me half to death like that! Making me think he didn't pass after i've been waiting so anxiously! He's only gonna be somewhat close (FL) during his 2-3 weeks at A school. After that he goes to CA and I'm in NC so there will be distance. Our last name is Lambert. Where is your son stationed?
@WestonsMom: My son is at A school in Mississippi right now thank the lord I think they tell those boys to do that to us because my son did the same thing with not telling me I mean I had to drag it out of him either that or they have warped their sense of humor. So so happy for ya. My husband is actually from NC he grew up outside of Washington NC and was stationed at Camp Lejeune NC while in the Marine Corp. what a small world huh. We live in Texas now and our son will be going to Groton CT soon for sub school as well. I know you are just beaming and I am so happy for you.
sbarber...thank you. actually one of weston's division buddies is my friend on FB. The friend saw Weston right before BS yesterday and then told me about it today and then later told Weston that he told me. Did that make sense? lol Anyway, since Weston found out I already knew he tried to make me think he was gettin discharged and I, of course started to believe it! He knew how to get me. He always does. Now if I could figure out how to get him that good! lol and yes, it is a small world sometimes. I dated a guy a long time ago at camp lejuene. And weston's new friend in RCU is going to Groton. I sent you a friend request on FB. Let's do keep in touch!
He got in trouble for spraying air freshener and it accidentally got on another recruit and that recruit tattled on him. Colten got cleared for duty today. was suppose to do Battlestations on Monday. TO say the least HE IS NOT A HAPPY CAMPER AND NEITHER IS HIS MOM
Coltens mom...thank you and yes Colten will get out of boot camp sooner or later. I know it doesn't feel like it though. Did he get in trouble in RCU or after he got sent to the division? I don't understand. Are you saying he got moved back in his training when he got in trouble?
Yes he got moved back because of the trouble he was to do battlestations on Monday and be at THU on Tuesday. Now he is in a div. and will PIR on the 4th just frustrating that something so trivial was made to be such a big deal. apparently it is the entertainment now because someone made an issue of a few drops of air freshener getting on them. Not on their skin at all just a fine mist on the uniform. I think it is rediculous. However he will get to participate in captains cup and he will get to PIR and PIR is the day before my birthday. So all things work together for good for those who love the Lord!!!!
coltens mom...yes, that does sound ridiculous. but it sounds like it worked out anyway! Happy early birthday, by the way. Have you been able to find a group for THU on here? I've been looking but can't seem to find one.
Weston's mom - yippee!!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!!! You've got a sailor!!!I
don't remember a group for THU. They are in there for varying lengths of time and for different reasons so that may be why. Actually while they are in THU, they can call whenever they are off duty AND they get liberty. Mine was in THU last year and when he had his first liberty, went to the Gurnee Mall and got a prepaid phone. He didn't want us to send his phone because he didn't know how long he'd be there and due to the floods in Tennessee, he was 5 weeks instead of a week or two to get orders.
tylers gma...yeah i don't think they have a group for THU. That's okay though. He just called and said he has to go see the PO in the morning and he thinks the PO is gonna tell him he can leave THU. A lot quicker than we thought!
My son Wes, called this morning to let us know he finally passed his PFA. He will be going to the next BS, Monday or Tuesday. 4 long months and he has finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
sbarber....he thinks he'll be leaving from chicago on tuesday (his birthday!) to go to a school in FL. once there he thinks it'll be 2-3 weeks. so hopefully i can see him graduate there since he didn't have a PIR. then he should be home for a short while until he leaves for san diego. i can't wait to give him a huge hug!
Hello, our son was admitted to the Ship 4 Div 2341 last Thursday. He was formerly Ship 4 Div 823. He fractured his fibula. We received a call last Thursday that said he would have a 6-9 week recovery. We didn't get to talk with him but a minute or two so information is limited. It sounds like most of your SR's are recovering (wonderful and answers to lots of prayers, I am sure) and leaving, but could you share some information of how the RCU works?
@paces; RCU is recruit convalesent unit, the kids see a doctor once a week, they have physical thereapy 3 times a week and they are still considered in boot camp same rules apply. RCU has 4 phases, phase 1 is only if they are on crutches each phase is generally 2 weeks long. They have to pass certain criteria to be "phased" up. They also have to pass a medical PFA to be released back into a Div. that also depends on where your son was in his training at the time of his injury like week/day. If far enough along he will not go back into a Div but he will continue to do his testing in RCU and go to Battle Stations 21 in RCU. So that would mean there will be no PIR but, it all depends on your son and how much he wants to complete in RCU and his RDC's. They are usually allowed to call with medical updates and that is normally on Sunday's it was every week now its been every other week so again it's up to the RDC on duty. A lot of us have sent crosswords or word finds to our recruits while they are there with no problems the Chief seems to think its good for their minds but, that being said some of us tear the pages out and send a few at a time with letters so there isn't any problems. I hope that answered alot of your questions if not please ask and one of us will do our best to answer them.
sbarber; Thank you so much for the info. It helps understand a little better. He was due for PIR on 11/10. He said he had only one more PST and was hoping to be able to make it through that. I think that was scheduled for this past Wed. Needless to say, he did not make it. He is working on an EOD contract so we don't know how the injury is going to affect that. Thank you for the advice and we will try the word searches. Hopefully we will get a call soon. Do you have a child in RCU?
@paces: I'm really sorry to hear that I hope things go very well for him and this doesn't mess up his contract I see special forces. My son was in RCU for 7 weeks has since been released and off to A school finally LOL.....So it souds like there won't be a PIR just BS21 and off to training that stinks. I know we miss them so much and look forward to the PIR and just seeing them. My son was in there July & August. Just be strong and tell him to keep the faith he will complete his mission ;-) its just going to take awhile. So sorry about his leg. Hopefully he calls real soon.
paces...welcome. just a note to add. make sure you tell him often how proud you are of him even though this happened. let him know it's only a minor set back and he can still finish. when SR's 1st get to RCU, it seems they feel like they've let people down. keep the letters positive even though you probably just want to cry. lol good luck to him :)
WestonsMom; How is your son? Does THU mean therapy unit? Thank you for your comments and advice.
sbarber and WestonsMom: I appreciate your responses. I never realized how soothing talking with other Moms would be. It is good to hear about what happens after RCU. I am writing or sending a card everyday. Not graduating will be a disappointment for him I know, but we weren't not going to be able to go. Too far and too expensive. He has a couple of good friends that were going to take our place. We were looking forward to seeing him as often as we could once he was at Eglin. We are only about 6 hours from there.
Paces- i'm so sorry that you and your son have to go through this tough time too. My sister stayed in RCU for a very loooong time... In fact she's got the record of the second female who stayed the longest in Bootcamp/RCU. (nov 2010-august 2011) She broke her shinbone during her final run (miscounted her laps instead of doing 12 she did 13 and on the 13th lap her tibia gave up on her and wasnt able to finish) 10 days prior to her graduation. She was very disappointed, devastated and frustrated...
As what westonsmom said letters letters and more letters full of support, motivational and positive thoughts! If you can write him everyday that will help a lot! Send some pictures too. Phase 1 in RCU will be the most boring part.. They don't do anything at all. Print some jokes, inpirational quotes, puzzles and wordsearch..
Just keep your spirits high..
Will be praying for your son's fast recovery...
