Hello to all. My son arrived in Gitmo last month. So I joined this group to learn a little more about it. I've only heard from him on fbook twice, once that he's there and that he is sending a letter home. Does anyone know abou thow long it takes to get letters and boxes to them? I'm from Oregon, so I know it will take a bit longer than the East coast. Is there any restrictions on what we can send? I shut off his phone because Verizion said cell service wasn't allowed in Cuba. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I'm sending out a couple of boxes of just fun stuff :) It's hard getting used to not being able to text or talk. I know that comes with the Job:)
My son is a HT3 which is a E4 in Army speak. MY hubby was in the Army so I know it better than Navy. Not sure what his job is there, he had 3 different jobs while on board ship. He trained to be a guard before he left, so I'm assuming that's what he's doing. I sent some candy so hopefully it won't be too ruined. This time I'm sending him truck & car mags and some Nerf guns. Mine hasn't been on Facebook or anything in over a month. And so far no letter :( Course I'm going out of town today so It will probably show up tomorrow :)
He should be having fun. I know he was excited to learn to dive. So that's what I'm guessing he's busy doing :)
:) Thanks for the pep talk. I need to buck up and quit whining. Knowing my kid he is probably doing everything he can that's new, which considering we're from Oregon everything is new :) Hopefully I get something when the next box I sent arrives. Minus any foodstuff since he is on a strict work out plan. Hope all is going well with you and yours!!! Thanks Tami
I havent been on the site in awhile..& i was just reading threw some of the more recent comments..So i just wanted to mention something regarding communcation & what program worked best for us.....which was AOL isntant messanger (aim)..Yes my husband did purchase internet for his room & yes it expensive & I do believe the rates have gone up in the last 2 months..but for having communication with family back home it is more than worth it. Aim does have alot to offer..chatting..sending text msgs n the other features it offers..that is all we used..the internet is not fast enuff to look @ multiply pages at a time or youtube videos but for basics and chatting it works just fine. Skype in the rooms drops a ton they need to go to the liberty center to use it best for video chat..just wanted to mention that. Any questions you may have just message me..I visited 3 times this past year and id be able to answer questions you have :)
Im new to this group and I wanted to know if anyone could help me out. My Boyfriend is currently stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has been there for a couple months now and Im suppose to go out and visit him at the half way point. The question I have is does anyone know what paper work I need to be able to go out there. My boyfriend just routed up his leave chit with my clearence paper work and were just waiting for that to all get approved. But after that Im not sure what we need to do, or what I need to bring with me other than my Passport to the airport. Plus does anyone know how long it takes for all that paper work to go though... Im suppose to be heading out in like 2 1/2 months. Also Im flying with IBC Travel, they are a new commercial airline, has anyone flown with them yet?
I havent been on here in forever either..upon john coming home from his 18month IA tour in gtmo we moved back to his original command..in norfolk va..and were there for 2months and then he had to pick quick orders we relocated to groton ct....so talk about a climate change..i must say it was a real experience being able to visit him the times I did ..there is a job opening down there for him and we are pretty open to it...if it happens..hope all is well with you ladies who have sailors serving in cuba.
my husband is stationed there now.... he has been there a little over a month now. internet and phone is kind of a hit and miss thing down there so communication is kind of scattered. He will be able to buy $5 phone cards that are good for 50 minutes but they get to be exspensive. My husband does tango a lot witch is kind of like skype only free you can download it on a computer or its an app for smart phones as well. There is also the facebook video chat that works great too. there is a room down there where you can go to get access to the phones and internet when they are working.
My daughter has been there for almost 2 months. She's an MA. Loves the job, loves hot weather. Took pics of large iguanas! Talk to her on Facebook, and can call her, but she can't call out. Now has internet in the apt. so it's better now than when she first got there. Has not got her box from home yet with civilian clothes. She must have a limited wardrobe, lol! She says it takes a month for packages to get there, the post office told me it first goes to California, then overseas.
i sent my husband a box and he got it in two weeks. he is also an MA got there about the same time your daughter did. Did she just get done with A school at lackland cause if so my husband knows her :). He just got internet in his room so we talk all the time on facebook and use the tango app which is a bit slow. He has to be the one to call me i dont have a number to call him. How did you get a number for your daughter and is it exspensive to call her?
Yes, lovemysailor, she went to Lackland for A school. Went to duty station around the middle of May. He probably does. One of her female shipmates from A school was already there when she got there, so she was real happy she knew someone! Her roommate got internet in their room, so now I can "talk" to her on Facebook more often. Before, she had to go to the "common" room, I guess it is, to use the internet. Wow, in 2 weeks!! I sent this box to her June 5th, still has not received it. I sent it priority mail too! Waste of money, lol! I also sent a letter the same day, just to see which got there first. I just received the letter yesterday marked return to sender. The reason checked off was "moved, left no address' !! I rechecked with her that I used the correct address, she said I had. I better get in touch with the Post Office! I tried tracking it, but can't seem to get the USPS site up on my computer. I sent her another box a week or two after the first, she hasn't received that one either. Weird.
She gave me the number. I don't know if it's expensive, but I guess I'll find out when my husband gets the phone bill, lol! It's my cell, and I think we might have an international plan, since my husband used to do a lot of business travel to Europe.
wow thats strange on package wise might be due to which state we live in or something. I am so glad to finnaly be able to connect with somone else with a loved one in Cuba. It has been a big change but the worse is over i think. Hopefully i will be down there by the end of the month if all goes as planned. :)
My son has been at gtmo for 2 months now. We are still getting adjusted to what works in the way of communication. Mostly we talk on facebook, but he call me using a phone card. I have found that neither my landline phone company nor my cell phone company have a good plan. They both cost about $2.00 per minute! I have only called 3 times. The best deal that I could find was to buy an online phone card from a company, I think was called NobelCom. They have a bunch of options, but I went with the $.49 per minute plan. As far as mailing to gtmo, I used the post office, 'if it fits, it ships' arrangement, and he got his package in 1 week. Granted, it was a rather small package. Don't know if any of this helps, but so far, this has been my experience. Am still looking for better communication options.
have your tried downloading the Tango app? It is free and you can use it on the computer or phone. very simple all you need is a phone number and you can use it. If you download it onto your phone you can get a call whenever but if you are using your computer you will have to call them or it wont connect. it just rings like a normal call and you can also send messages on it. uses internet so no cost to you. You can video chat or just regular talk. It is a orange box with a white T in the middle. Best app ever!!
I have found it if you send the mail (whether it is a box or letter) certified it arrives much later than if I just sent it regular mail. If I send a box priority, it takes anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks. My son did say the mailroom is not always open and that can case a delay also in him getting mail. As for phone service, we are at a loss. I could not find a phone service that offered international service to Guantanamo. My son did get a phone but I have to relay on him calling which can be a challenge. Any suggestions on a better way of communicating with him would be appreciated
I have not found a way to contact my husband he is the one that always calls me. If he has a phone you can probably get that number and call it just hope he is home when you call or it will be a waist. I also think that is pretty exspensive. The internet is my main comunication and it is also free which helps a lot. They have to be around the wifi to use it which is slow a lot of the times so my husband got his own. We get to talk a lot more and its better quality. We use facebook to type back and forth and use the Tango app to call or to skype with. the camera is often delayed or frozen due to slow internet so we mainly just talk. I found that to be the best so far but i remember someone saying they called their sailor but not sure how they did that. hope this helps some
My husband just told me to download a different app called KIK. I just got it so I am not exaclty sure how it works but he said everyone down there uses it so you could also try that.
Thanks debbiel for the USPS info. My sailor finally got her box. It was at the base, it was sitting there waiting for her. I sent it Priority Mail, so I did expect it to be a little faster, and it was. There was some kind of miss-communication, apparently. Some mix-up with her location or address, so they did not notify her that it was there. Probably why I got the letter send back marked "moved address unknown"! Also my sailor did not go to the post office and ask about her package!? She bought new clothes on the internet, that's probably why, lol! It was a 53 lb. box though, she needed to get a ride to the post office, she could not have carried that back to her apt.
lovemysailor, I call my sailor. Her roommate had a phone in the room, so my sailor gave me the number. I did mention it to my husband, but he did not notice any unusual expenses on the phone bill. We live in a different state than all our family, so we are used to long distance charges. He probably just thought I called my mother, lol! She says it's very expensive for her to call us, so we call her. My sailor says KIK is the best, she got it on her phone before she left, so she could talk to shipmates overseas. She wanted me to get it before she left, but we never got around to arranging it. I think I would need to get a new phone though, not sure my simple phone would support an app like that.
My son is in GTMO and says we can visit? We are interested in visiting next spring break. Has anyone here visited there?? Anything we need to know?? Anyone???? :)
michaelsmom- in order to get to cuba he will need to put in a chit for approval for you to get on base. you will need passports.other than that you should be good to go.
daisy72 gtmo is not as bad as it sounds. from what my husband tells me it is just boring and he hates the horrible internet and tv service. cell phones are do not work down there so communication can be limited. there is a movie theater that has up to date movies and a lot of other acivities to do.
It is important to know that communication will be very different than you are use to. no cell phone to just text and see how they are doing. Most to communication will have to be initiated by him. I have found that facebook messaging and video calls are the best. I downloaded the messenger app which allows you to call for free!!! it is also great for sending messages back and forth and if you have a computer with a camera on it you can video chat using facebook. Responses will be a bit delayed and picture choppy but it works. also if he has a vehicle you will want to send that down as well or he can buy one here but most are not in the best of shape. There is not much to do on base so anything to keep him entertained is always a good idea. Other than that he will be fine. Love this base!!!! sorry for late reply haven't been on in a while. will try to do better at getting on more often. :)
My son is an MA there and loves it! We are wanting to travel there this summer to visit. Has anybody here gone there? If so can you tell me how you got there and the procedures?
My husband is also an ma here :) they probably. Work together! We have not had anyone fly down yet but I do know that everyone has to get background check, be in good health, he has to fill out chit to get approved, need passport, sponsorship paper to get on plane to come down, and he has to have a room at hotel booked for everyone before co will approve the visitors. Can only bring so many people at a time cant stay for more than month at a time and can only have visitors every so ofton cant remeber exactly how long in between each visit.
Tell him to go to the gtmo connections facebook page under files and download the file 4650.1a visitor pdf file. It will tell him all he needs to know.
Hello our son is at his first command on gtmo. Is an MA had been there since mid oct 2013 30mo orders. He seems to love it. Just passed his patrol qualification board. He is wanting us to visit. We just got our passports planning for the fall.
Hi everybody!!! My son just arrived at his first duty station, which is Great Lakes about 2 weeks ago. He is a hospital corpsman. Some billets became available for zero quad corpsmen in guatanamo, and he was considering talking to his chief about going. Can anyone giver feedback about how their sailors like it there, or how it is working in the hospital there? He hasn't given Great Lakes much of a chance, but so far he isn't loving it. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.
Emily.... I dont know how the hospital atmosphere is but as far as living in cuba here is what I have heard and my own opinions. First if he is big into technology and loves his phone cuba is not for him. No cell service inless you go through military but then have to be plain old flip phone with no camera and is very expensive. Not sure much else on how to go about getting one or how well it works cause mainly chiefs or higher paids have them. Also if he is big on family and and you guys want to visit often I would have him stay in states. Visiting is very expensive but can be done (give more details if wanted). If he loves water and going diving and all of that he will love cuba. I know some people that go out fishing diving and all else every day. Most people call it "the rock" and get bored after a few years hear as not much to do besides go to beach. They have free movies that are up to date with the states as far as new to theaters and such. Bowling alley free gym pools and put put golf. Also regular golf and disc golf but think those cost not sure. Lots of hiking trails to go on. I personally love this place as its always warm little rain and a good place to disconnect from real world at times. They do have places where you can connect to wifi and get free internet or you can buy it for house or Barack. It isnt to pricey but also isn't anything fast like in the states. Only have one shopping center (nex) a furniture store and a thrift store and the dive shop. Most people buy everything online with amazon as prices here are very expensive. Hope this helps some :)
Thanks, lovmysailor. I passed the info you gave me on to my son. From the little bit of research I e done, it seems as though sailors either love or hate gitmo. I spoke with my sailor last night, and he would just be doing 6 mos there and then going back to Chicago. He also has the option of a 6 mos deployment on a ship, which corpsman do not always have the opportunity to do. Hopefully he will make a good decision for himself!!!
Emily, I agree with what lovemysailor says. My daughter has been at Gitmo for 10 months. She is an MMA, and loves the job, and the people she works with, and the warm weather. She says it is boring at times, with not that much different to do. She was originally supposed to be there a year, but now it looks like she may be there a lot longer.
Your sponsor has to get plane tickets and hotel room booked first. Then fill out and submit an entry clearance form for everyone coming to island and get it checked off by everyone.

Hello our son is at his first command on gtmo. Is an MA had been there since mid oct 2013 30mo orders. He seems to love it. Just passed his patrol qualification board. He is wanting us to visit. We just got our passports planning for the fall.

I would be interested in hearing about visiting there also. My son is an MA and has been there since mid May.
