Jbird.....I had to look up the spelling, too....ha....here it is.....Manischewitz
Still producing their wonderful sweet concord grape nectar even though it was sold years ago...and still in Canandaigua, NY.
There had been a short discussion here about celebration of Christman on the Truman; trees, decorations and the sort. There is certainly no specific religious holiday celebrated over all but there is always something for every religion during those times... I thought the article would sort of show that so folks wouldn't worry.
Sandman713 and others. As an old Grandma whose family is spread out from Hawaii to the Arabian Sea and coast to coast here.....and many of them long gone....I am an expert of holidays.....ha.
I always spend Christmas with someone. This year, my son (the Hawaiian) sent me and airline ticket to spend almost the whole month of December visiting him....and I'm thrilled. He usually tries to come home for Christmas but it is increasingly difficult for him to do so.
About 3 years ago, I started spending Thanksgiving volunteering at a local shelter and/or a church where they feed the hungry, the homeless, the poorest families....and make a special day for those folks. It's better than sitting around a table, believe me.
We all have to face our kids growing up and moving on. It's so nice when all can be together but it's not always possible. We must find our own way to enjoy...and the best way is by doing something for someone in worse shape than you are.....ha. Heck, just rocking HIV babies in a newborn nursery can bring happiness.....and they NEED rocking.
GrandmaB- must be you're talking about Canandaigua wine who purchased widmers. Manischewitz was made at Widmer winery in Naples (about 1/2 hour South of Canandaigua) until Canandaigua bought them. It was made here for decades and in fact it could be much longer but I'm not sure when they started producing the kosher wine. This is huge wine/grape country which is why I'm never writing on N4M's this fall. Working the grapes and the harvest was enormous this year. I wonder if that's true in other parts of the country. But the history of widmers and this area is fascinating. It's very touristy. Oh but that manischewitz is sooooooooooo yummy, so sweet!.
This will be first Thanksgiving and Christmas without my only child and son since he was born 20 years ago. I know he will celebrate with his new friends and be thankful for his many Blessings too! I believe in my heart those in charge will ensure they are fed good food, have fun, and plenty of laughter! I know they will all celebrate spiritually! I'll miss him, but so proud of this opportunity to make friends and memories that will last a lifetime!
Hi everyone, has been a very Crazy day! So glad to have all of next week off!
This is my second Thanksgiving and Christmas without my girl, Miss her so much. Thinking about going to Vegas for Thanksgiving, take my mind off it..Lol. My son is also out of State, seems to happen as the kids get older. Grandma B is right, we just need to do other things. Have Fun in Hawaii, Grandma B, what a wonderful gift! I Told my hubby, I would love to go there, but have my girls dog, My Grand dog..LOL so kinda limited on where we can go. He would not survive if he was boarded. Have a good weekend everyone! Enjoy your wine it sounds yummy! I wish I could drink wine, but I am allergic .
The Manischewitz winery is located in Canandaigua, New York, and has since 1987 been the property of Constellation Brands, which continues to license the Manischewitz name from R.A.B. Foods.[13] The Winery was founded by Leo Star and run by the Star family since 1927.
They apparently have a huge plant and headquarters in Newark NJ for their HQ and food products along with a few others .
Wherever or whatever, I enjoy their Concord once in a while. It's almost like drinking a fine Port, which is a change for em. I'm more into super dark rich Italian reds, very dry...ha
I've never been a big lover of Hawaii. I mean, there are over 300 wonderful islands within a few hours flight....in the Caribbean.....ha. But, I'd go anywhere to be with my son. I just want to hug him for a long, long time...then spend HOURS looking at him......ha..again.
grandmaB- Yep, constelation brands (marketing for the kosher wine) is located in canadaigua but the actual production of manischewitz was widmers here in Naples. (go on wiki, look up Naples, NY) The Rabbi had to be here to do whatever he did with the wine, rather inspect or bless or all but I remember the workers talking about the Rabbi being at the winery. NOT a common sight in this little place but a neat part of the history of widmers. Maybe try and look up pictures of widmers, it's got acres and acres of grapes growing in front of the winery. I am curious though if the new owners, Hazlets winery, still produce the manischewitz. Now I have to find out, I do like to sometimes have some for christmas. it's dessert really, it's that sweet.
Hi moms, Walmart is shipping For free over $35. I bought stocking stuffers, snacks, two recent release movies and a couple of Christmas classic movies.
GrandmaBarB. Let us know if you have a layover in California, we can take you wine tasting in Napa! I love Hawaii!!
onlyson, you can send just about anything, except chocolate, it melts. I send nuts, dried fruit, soup, crackers and peanutbutter. Coffee, powder flavoring for the water, microwave popcorn, canned fruit, small cans, oatmeal...they don't have a lot of space for storage. Also hand sanitizer , shampoo, body wash. Have fun.
Onlyson....My grandson finally told me to stop sending him microwave foods...takes too much space and he really doesn't need it. He says food is available all over the place, all the time. He does enjoy his favorite cookies, his Tom's of Maine toothpaste, special bath soap he likes, special body cream for his uber dry skin, dried fruits like apricots and craisins.....Swiss Miss, popcorn, Oreo cookies, Fig newtons, (I made him a tin of his favorite lemon drop Christmas cookies that I just mailed off, too), he LOVES his "foot relief" lotion...says it feels soooooooooo good after a hot shower at the end of his day---and bought him a couple pair of "footie" things to put on afterward for walking around. I bought him the Aveda product..which is top drawer. A box of assorted bandaids for those nicks and scratches.....along with a small tube of Neosporin so he doesn't have to run to sick bay for them. TicTacs, Burt's Bees lip balm, a small loofa for the shower...(walgreens has a good selection of those. get the small "travel" size). Have also sent him a few magazines...even though he says they get plenty on the ship. A couple of books...he loves to read. Little but powerful keyring size flashlight.
I don't send him liquids, nor chocolates as they melt into a mess from sitting around in 120 degree warehouses and ports for a month.,,,but hard candies like Nips or lemon drops. Some Hall's cough drops.
We have to control ourselves, we Mom's and Grandmas....they have so little storage space and all their "stuff" has to be stowed. Here's a pretty good picture of what they have: The mattress on their rack lifts up and they can store stuff under there. You can see by the size, there isn't much room...and the lockers are tiny. Considering all of their uniforms, undies, boots, shoes, civvies and everything has to be stowed, you can see why space is at a premium. I try to send most things that can be consumed....ha....
I am probably one of those mom's that has been over the top with care packages. I send "theme" packages...Halloween box, Thanksgiving box, Nacho box, and my friends in San Diego sent 70lbs of candy and several boxes with sheets, dri-fit tees and socks for Christmas. My son is the addressee, and then shares all. The sailors love it when he receives a box, he says they all gather around and he hands out the goodies. Last box I added thank you cards and asked him to have the sailors sign, then send them to my San Diego gals.
Yippee! Gaisey I send themed boxes too! That's wonderful you send! Last package I sent post office worker says: " you got all that in there"? I got a high five too! Because I had so many customs forms for one of the boxes. They say some people try to send the box all bulging! I love sending things! It's my new shopping obsession! I am waiting to start again next week. I found out my sister and niece sent one and he got like 6 packages at same time! Yikes! I sent them a week apart. Lately usps has been getting them there in record time which I'm pleased with!
Hello ladies, I haven't been on here for a few days and was just looking back and reading your posts and catching up. Been so busy at work and that is where I usually read and post my comments. I am at home now and had a heck of a time trying to find this website and then remember my email and password to sign on in order to be able to comment. Anyhow glad some of you are getting some vacation time. I am going to be getting together with my family this coming week for Thanksgiving at my sister's house with 6 or the 8 siblings in my family and various nieces, nephews, spouses, etc. and am really looking forward to that. We will miss my son of course though. I send out themed care pkgs too. I try to send him one a month at least and write him letters, send cards, email, FACEBOOK him in between. We don't Skype. I have to refrain from sending him too much as I don't want to bombard him due to the space restrictions. I know he shares with others though as it's really too much for just him. Glad you liked the pictures I posted from the Homecoming in 2010. AS you can see it was a very cold day on the pier but definitely worth the wait. My son is a Nuke and we had to wait til they could come off last and man oh man were we cold by then after several hours. Was so fun to watch the other reunions. I was moved to tears several times that day no doubt. Have a good week.
Hello! I am new to this group. My son just got his orders for Norfolk and the HST. He is home on leave right now and reports on Dec 8th. Does anyone know the process for getting them to their ship or how long it generally takes? Do you think he will make the ship by Christmas or will they wait until after the holidays at this point? Also, I have seen several mention homecoming. Does anyone know when the HST is due back in Norfolk? Thanks so much!
welcome DARmom. Other's know way more than me but my guess is he will go to the ship soon after getting to the base. Your son should be told when the ship will be back but we can't discuss locations or dates over the internet for our sailors protection. We like to help each other through this process with our loved ones being gone, vent, cry, laugh, and we have virtual drinks and cabana boys that give us massages. I am the designated driver for our group and just drink water. Most of us are in the over 50 club. So enjoy all the posts and have a great week
WelcomeDARmom for lots of us this is our Sailors 1st deployment so we are all learning from each other. A wonderful support group and we are all becoming great friends. Any one hearing anything from their Sailors? Missing my girl like crazy!!!
My son wrote this morning says they will get the results of their rank test tomorrow or Tuesday. I am saying a little prayer for him tonight that he passed. He said, it was extremely hard...
Welcome DARmom! So sorry he has to leave so close to the holidays, but he is off to an adventure of a lifetime. We all are missing our sons and daughters that are deployed. I just asked my husband today if we could go on a cruise for Christmas... Still looking for those cabana boys TooTall Joan! Maybe they are in Hawaii?? The cabana boys in Key West were NOT my type, but they sure liked my husband and he got a huge kick out of the attention...ha ha
Hi....my daughter has been in the Navy for eleven years. My daughter left home the day after graduation for boot camp. We had talked about what she may want to do when she graduated but enlisting in the military never was discussed. I thought when she left home right after graduation was hard, well. She has been to a few duty stations here on the east coast and the west coast which was not bad but now that she has been deployed it has been very hard. I miss her very much. This is the first time that the family will not be together for the holidays. I am proud of her and support her but as a mom my heart aches.
We just got our 1st phone call from our son. EXCITED!!!! He usually calls his wife and that's okay with me. But, today it was AWESOME to hear his voice. Happy Thanksgiving Week.
Yippee! Welcome DARMom! Speaking from my own experience, my son was at Norfolk for about a week and then flown to ship with other shipmates. I had met some of them at A school graduation, and they were excited to start their next journey! It took about a week to get his address and two weeks to get his ship email. Hope this helps. You are with a very supportive group. Check out care package ideas links and have fun shopping
Tricie : this is a great group we have here. we can laugh together and have the best party with our cabana boys.
Gaisey : my son told me that the test was very hard so i pray that they pass.
Welcome DARMom I sure you will like here we all encourage each other.
Happy for all who have heard from their sailors i got a email he is good but busy. But he did receive a box from Operation Gratitude. He liked the box.
It had cards 5 hr energy drinks books and then personal items. He said him and his buddy got one so they are going to sent back pictures to them with a thank you letter.. He also got one of my boxes. but not a NFM Holiday bag.
Hi Tricie! We all know how you feel. This is my son's first deployment, and also the first holiday season he will not be here under my roof,on Christmas morning so I understand how you feel! They have started advertising the military messages that members of our military record of themselves and then send to their home TV station saying Merry Christmas to their family which are then aired during the news...and I cry at every one they show! I am very proud of our kids for the job they are doing, but still miss them like crazy!
Welcome DARmom, you have come to the right place, the ladies here are AWESOME! It is hard being so Far away from the this time of year. This is the 2nd time my girls is gone for the Holidays. The first time she was in BC. Now her first deployment.
Welcome Tricie, Please tell your girl thank you for her 11 years of service! We are here to help each other, and we all know exactly how you feel!
The sun is shinning today, going to be in the 70's the next few days, then Rain on Thursday and Friday. I am sorry everyone who is getting the storm that came through here and is hitting you now.
Zander'sMom, they make me cry too! I wish we could see our Sailors sending a message to us!
Sandra, please thank your son for his long service! We may get used to them being away, doesn't mean we have to like it..LOL. We all knew what we were in for when they went into the Navy, but we will always miss them when they are away...we are Moms, that is what we do.
Spent yesterday making out Christmas Cards for all the Sailors on our list, and Cards for my Girl, she is even getting one from her fur baby!
Have a good day everyone, hope you all hear from you Sailors!
Good Morning ladies: So glad everyone is hearing from your sailors. I haven't heard from mine but I am sure he has be busy. I got a thank you email from a sailor that received my gift package it was so nice to to know that the packages that we send was appreciated. Cat- - I hated that they started handing out the packages so early I was hoping to see some pic too. I hope all will have a nice Thanksgiving, it will also be the 1st time without my son. I will try to keep up with all ya'll later getting ready for my Thanksgiving and surgery:(. I will have more time in December to keep up with you guys. Send the cabana boy down my way after Dec. 4. LOL
I last heard from my sailor almost 2 wks ago. He FACEBOOKed me for my Birthday, which really made my day! Was happy he remembered it and took the time to tell me he loved and missed me too! That was by far my most favorite birthday present hearing from him! I am not concerned as he is not a big writer or phone caller. he even told me Mom don't be upset if I go long times without contacting you this time but would still like you to write, email and send care pkgs often. I know he appreciates it and I don'[t mind. I always try to in vision his smile when he receives something from home. I saw on FACEBOOK yesterday someone saying their sailor had received their Christmas pkg already. That surprised me as I figured they would make them wait til then to open it, but maybe with the amount of pkgs and mail coming in they just do not have the room to do so, I don't know. Curious to see if anyone writes or contacts me back thanking me for mine adn my contributors. I tried to put different names and addresses onto the pkgs with names of those who contributed so they would get the thank you. Hopefully the sailors do take the time to thank them. Hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving!
Also got a e-mail from a sailor that is AO3 i will not list his name but a very sweet note liking the goodie bag he received. He said the bags Definitely made everyone's day especially the messages written by the children.
Getting my cards made out to send to your list of sailors and my sons box ready i'm making him a video of Family and friends leaving him a message wishing him a merry christmas and and Happy new year. Just a touch of home for him this is first deployment and first christmas away from home. So candle light Christmas eve service will be hard but i know i will make it.
pschip and other Navy moms: It's good to know I am not the only sap who is really missing her sailor around the Holidays. last year he made it home for Thanksgiving but not Christmas, so this will be my 2nd Christmas without my baby. I guess I am feeling sorry for them all more than us. I just hope they continue to keep themselves busy and that the ship has all sorts of good activities for them planned to entertain them and keep them happy during this time. We will ALL get through this and come away with a true appreciation of one another and how much we love spending time together at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day, St. Patricks Day, Easter, birthdays, etc.
Carol Ann thank you yes it is hard fro them to be on the ship so i'm with you i hope they have things for them to do But he is in good mood and was upbeat so that is good.
Good Morning, Carol Ann I am missing my girl so Much! You are not alone.
pschip, doing the Happy Dance for you!
Got a nice thank you from one of the sailors who got one of my bags. Made me smile. My daughter is so upset, her group had planned to pass them out and take pictures, but someone higher up changed the plans. I told her we all know how that is, but she is not happy! She said we should have used her as a contact, that they had a storage area ready for it, I told her we had to use the contact personae we were told to use. I am happy that they are receiving the bags though.
Finished up cards to mail to our list. Added the new Sailors from the list yesterday. Will mail today.
Going to go walk on the beach, always makes me feel better. Have a good day everyone!
I would LOVE to take that walk on the beach with you ladies! Love the beach and ocean! Instead I am stuck in snowing/cold OH! Anyhow jist wanted to also say to Catsmom--tell your daughter thank you for all she tried to do to make this special! I really appreciate it! Didn't work the way we hoped it would, but hey the outcome is still good! Maybe she can still get some picts of her own group receiving the pkgs.
Catsmom your daughter gets an E for effort. It was kind of her to be willing to distribute and take pics. Maybe they will take pics of some of the groups as they pass them out.
Today is a yucky, rainy day and kids at school are bouncing off the walls. However I got an email from my daughter that has my heart smiling... that she passed her test for AO. She didn't pass the portion for Petty Officer but she doesn't even care about that.
It is only raining here right now but the sleet and freezing rain is 2 towns away. I pray everyone that is on the east coast stays safe if you have to be out and about in this weather.
ok not sure why it went sideways...took this today, one of my favorite places on my walk, this is right before you go down to the water. Laguna beach is so pretty.
Congrats to all the sailors that advanced, Doing the Happy Dance for all!
pschip, the list of sailors was emailed by Sharon yesterday, there are 14. if you don't have it message me your email, I will forward it to you.
Haven't heard from my girl since last week. I know she is very busy.
Hello Truman moms, well my son is finally being deployed to the Truman, he is being sent from Seattle to Amsterdam then to Bahrain and then will be flown to the Truman on Sunday. I so appreciate your words of wisdom and support. This is my first deployment. :)
Welcome marybutler! My son was so excited when he was flown out to the Truman! I was just a bundle of nerves for a week until I got an email from him at about a week with his ship address. I came on here to ask questions because you just don't know what to expect. I received his ship email about two weeks. This is a very supportive group!

She has been to a few duty stations here on the east coast and the west coast which was not bad but now that she has been deployed it has been very hard. I miss her very much. This is the first time that the family will not be together for the holidays. I am proud of her and support her but as a mom my heart aches.

pam I haven't heard from my sailor today at all and I usually hear from her everyday even if it is just 1-2 sentences.
Gaisey, my daughter told me the same thing that she would get the results Tuesday. She also said it was very hard.
JKFamily doing the happy dance with you that you got a phone call from your son.
Someone has posted this week that the holiday project would be dispersed as they get it on the ship. I sure hope that isn't the case.

Hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving!

pschip and other Navy moms: It's good to know I am not the only sap who is really missing her sailor around the Holidays. last year he made it home for Thanksgiving but not Christmas, so this will be my 2nd Christmas without my baby. Patricks Day, Easter, birthdays, etc.

pschip, doing the Happy Dance for you!
