Happy TG! I heard from my son's best friend this morning, who is in Afghanistan, bless his heart! My son has been sending him care packages from port!! (Probably some of the stuff I sent my son) If it weren't for my son he would not have received a thing. Oh my, I completely forgot he was over there! As soon as the stores open tomorrow I am shopping for warm socks for our soldier!!

  • Navymom2

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Second one without my sailor.  I know that while we are celebrating with our families - we are thinking about those away on duty. I am blessed to be a part of this group and I am thankful for GramaBarb...the wisest woman on earth! Thanks GramaBarb for being there for us and helping us "toughen up" when needed. :)  Anyone of us would love to have you over for dinner anytime.

  • Coach Shelia

  • GrandmaBarB

NavyMom....what a nice thing to say.  I would accept your invitation, too.  It's not so much being "wise", it's having lived for so many years....past the biblical 3 score and ten anyway.  If we are lucky...and we pay attention...we learn as we go along...and appreciate the experiences of others.  Heaven knows we'll never live long enough to experience everything on our own....ha......  It's hard to let go of those you've nested with most of their lives.  But, by the time THOSE chicks have reached 50, you've become comfortable with it...and are so proud of them and what sort of human beings they are.  You take pride in them because YOU did that.  Same with the Grandkid (I only got one..but he's the best one...ha). I watched him grown with the love of a wonderful and attentive mother who gave him deep, deep roots and HUGE wings....just like she and her brother received.  You begin to realize that those nestlings are going to be perfectly fine....without you.  And, while it's scary, you are proud.  What they need from you is unconditional love, pride in their accomplishments....and a soft place to fall if one of their wings are injured....to help them heal.  Happy Thanksgiving to all you young'uns here....

    Later................

Doing the Happy Dance for you Coach Shelia  & Gaisey

Hang in there Navymom2  sending hugs your way. They will be home before long.

Thanks GrandmaBarB we all needed that

  • Catsmom

Heard from my girl, she said life on a carrier..stand in line for chow 2 hrs. Get there, more Turkey, and Pumpkin Pie.. Made me sad for her.

GrandmaB, thank you as always for your words of wisdom, my mom is no longer with me so you are here for me which is nice to have .
  • Navymom2

Hip, hip, hooray for everyone that heard from their sailors.  Just before sitting down to dinner, our sailor called and got to speak to everyone.  :)  Can you hear my glee??? He knew when we would be all together.  Thank you my Navy sisters for all your encouragement and GrandmaBarB... I think we are all going to take turns having you over for dinner.

  • GrandmaBarB

Catsmom.....I know how one misses "Mom".  Mine dear one has been dead for almost exactly 10 year....she died on 12/15.  There is not ONE day that I don't miss her like crazy and not ONE day that I wouldn't give just about anything just to talk to her again....

  • Cicard23

Feeling sad today, sure do wish my son could have been with us today. Would have loved to talk to him today one way or another. Did get email and it sounded like not much was going to be different than any other day for him.
  • Catsmom

(((((((((Hugs)))))))) Cicard23, we all miss our sailors, know how you feel. I know they all miss being home today too. Today is just another day for them, doing what they were trained to do. We are here for each other. He may still call, my daughter called, she said the phone lines are very busy, pray he calls you.

GrandmabarB thank you for your understanding, I too think about her everyday. I also lost my Dad and oldest Brother 11 years ago. Today was a hard day, missing everyone, but I heard you say pull up your big girl panties, you will get through..LOL. Thank you for being here, We all love you! Hope to meet you someday!
  • too tall Joan

happy for everyone that heard from their sailor today...I did not.  However I knew she was having a very busy day in the galley and said she wouldn't get to take part in any of the activities today because of all the food they had to cook :(

  • Catsmom

NavyMom2, doing the Happy Dance for you! Awesome you all got to talk to him! Love the Picture!
  • navydaughtersmom13

My daughter said they got our packages. Here is what her email said. "Oh and we did get the packages from navy for moms like a week ago. I emailed yo but just realized it got kicked back to me. It was great! It looked like Christmas in here lol there was paper and boxes EVERYWHERE!"
  • jbr0001-USS Harry Truman-VAQ 130

Hello everyone. Hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Glad some of you got a call from your sailors . Mine email me and said the line were so long to get to the phones he figured that he would not be able to call. He said they are so busy. Not a lot of time to email either. thanks for all the sweet words of support from all of you. You all are awesome. Catsmom-hated to heard that your sailor had a long wait for chow. Joan- hang in there. Being in the gallery had to be super busy. That goes to do too Cicard23. Nice pic Navymom2. Grandma BarB- Keep up the excellent support you gives to all of us. God Bless our sailors!
  • Winski

tootallJoan:  my son is in the galley too.  I didn't expect to hear from him and I didn't.  He called me the day before he started duty (which was early this week) and I figure I won't hear from him for at least a month!  I hear they keep them very busy down there.

  • Catsmom

Good morning everyone, have a very good Friday!
navydaughtersmom13, happy your girl received her bag, my girls group has not yet received any, they are waiting with anticipation...LOL
  • GrandmaBarB

Catsmom......As you get older, you experience losses, for sure.  Out of 8 siblings in my family, only 4 of us are left.  It's that "cycle of life" poets write about.  Doesn't make it any easier, though.  Remembering them, and our Dad and our Mom...and the good times are so much easier with the passing time.  I cherish to many albums full of photos of us...and our grandparents....and great grandparents who were still around.  What a lovely family we have....a little bent here and there, independent and adventurous...not always virtuous but a good tree to fall from....ha.

Remember every one of them,...with a smile....and love in your heart.

  • navymomson#2

Does anyone know if we can purchase phone cards for our sailors on the Truman? If so where can we get them?

  • Navymom2

Good morning my Navy family. TootallJoan: pls tell you daughter that all of us moms thank her for working so long and hard everyday for our sailors. Send me her mailing info and I'll send her a special thank you.  lkennedy@bak.rr.com.

Cicard23: pls know you are not alone. We here all know how you feel and have felt the same at times. Sending hugs your way. If you'd like, I will send your sailor a special thank you too.  On another note, my hubby told me I "embarrassed" my sailor by posting photo last nite. lol I didn't even think of that possibility. HA! I hope he doesn't get too much teasing from his 500 facebook friends. :) GrandmaBarB: This "toughing up" thing is an ongoing process for me - pls be patient. :) lol  Thanks for being here for me gang...

  • too tall Joan

Navymom2 I sent you an email.

Winski, what does your son do?  My daughter is doing her cranking rotation and cuts up fruit.  She will be done her rotation in January.

GrandmaBarB you must be in my mom's age bracket.  Thank you for the "hard" talks you give to each of us.

  • GrandmaBarB

Navymom.....Don't know how old your Mom is buy, I'm about to turn 73.  Enjoy excellent health, no maintenance meds, fairly active (I have a streak of laziness....it's a character flaw.....I'd rather sit and read).  Truthfully, until I look in the mirror (especially in the morning), I don't feel any different than I did at 35...  The early morning mirror, however, finds my Mother looking back at me...ha.

Re:  Gift Cards - we got our sailor iTunes and Amazon.   I downloaded the gift card to his (our) itune account so it would be easy for him to just go on and download the books and music he wants.   You can do the same with Amazon if you know his account info (plus you don't have to worry about them being lost at sea) ;)

  • Zander'sMom

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Feeling a bit blue. My first holiday without my sailor. The whole family felt him not being here. I guess perhaps it was worse because 5 members of our immediate family had to have some type of surgery over the last 6 weeks, and 2 of those involve the "C" word... Always want to gather your family close in times of trouble. Also didn't help when our sailor sent an email stating he waited in line for well over an hour in an attempt to get thanksgiving dinner, but finally gave up and settled for chicken and french-fries. Ended the email saying he wishes he was home. Pulled at the mom heart strings quite a bit. Just missing him a lot this week.

  • Catsmom

navymomson#2, you can get the AT&T ship to shore card online, then you can email, him the info, you can also add time to it online.

GrandmaBBar, Lots of good memories for sure. My Brother was 56 he died from Liver Cancer, my dad was 76 he passed 2 months and 3 days after my brother, my mom was 9 days from her 86 th birthday. But I always remember the good times, we were blessed with many.
sandman713, good ideas on the gift cards.
  • Catsmom

Zander'sMom, I am praying for your family members . Hope they beat the bid C, praying for of you too, it is rough for all.
My girl stood in line for 2 hours, and said when she finally got to eat, there was no Turkey and no Pumpkin Pie, she said she was Thankful for the Banana she got to eat, it does tug at those heart strings.
  • pschip

Zander's Mom  Praying you you and your family.

Catsmom  Yes my sailor stood in line also and didn't get the big meal they were out of things but he said that was ok he was thankful for what he got and his family. It pulled real hard at the heart strings.

  • sandman713

So sorry gmill75 that your baby got hurt.  I feel your pain of not being able to be there. Hope he heals soon with no complications xo

  • Navymom2

Praying for a complete and rapid recovery for your sailor.  Hang in there gmill75.

  • Catsmom

gmill75, I am so sorry, praying for a quick recovery and no permanate damage. Sending you big (((((((( HUGS ))))))). It is hard to be so far away. He will have the best care.
  • creeder1

gmill75 so sorry - I know the feeling!  God bless and a speedy healing for your son - will say a prayer for him

  • DARmom

Well, my son leaves for Norfolk and then on to the HST in just one more week. Is there free Wi-Fi so that sailors can use their laptops and cell-phones on the carrier? Is it better to take a laptop or tablet?

  • DARmom

gmill75 - wishing your sailor a speedy recovery! My son developed an ingrown toe-nail during boot camp and ended up getting one on the other foot during A school. When neither was healing well they ended up removing 1/2 his toe-nail on each foot. I about freaked when I had him text me a picture of his feet. But, he handled it really well - including the five shots to each foot! They are not our babies anymore but it still feels like a knife in the heart when they are hurting...

  • navydaughtersmom13

    DARmom

Unfortunately there is no wifi on the ship. They have computers on the ship with limited internet. Often a only communication is email sometimes during certain times they can get on face book. Computers are only available at certain times. They have a phone but it only takes ship to shore pre paid cards and is very expensive. Many take laptops and tablets for when they go to port and can find local wifi. Also my daughter bought a prepaid cell for over there in Dubai and Baharain but outgoing calls no incoming or texts. Sorry. I know it is different but you learn to work with it. Hope this helps and welcome to the group!!
  • pschip

gmil75  sorry to hear i know how you feel my son had his leg cut with a cable last year and almost lost his leg. I will be praying for a speedy recovery.

  • too tall Joan

gmill75 ugg...that tears at the heart when or kids get hurt no matter how old they are.  Praying for a quick recovery with no perm. damage.  (((hugs))) to you Momma.

My daughter said that her division got their holiday stockings the other day but by the time she got there from the galley to get her's, they were all gone cause people took more than one.  First no turkey dinner because it was all gone, then no holiday stocking. I'm a little annoyed.  Today they were serving turkey dinner again so hopefully she got some on this go around

  • Coach Shelia

Thinking of everyone and praying us through this deployment learning experience. I find comfort in each of your words of wisdom! Catsmom...I went to the at&t website. When I click on the card for navy it pulls up link for virtual minutes. Is that card able to be used from ship? I would rather add minutes online. The ship to shore cards I've ordered from exchange store are awkward to call 1-800 to add minutes to. The customer service reps are very rude and I have gotten charged twice the amount I asked to be added. It's all good, but I just feel unsure after each purchase.
  • Catsmom

Coach Shelis, it is a Ship to shore card, I know you can google it. AT&T , are the ones you have to use for the Navy, Not sure but I think you can reload online. You would think the exchange would make it easier..
  • Catsmom

Too tall Joan, that is not right, your daughters command should have made sure that everyone got one! That makes me angry, all our work to make sure everyone got one. I would like to make her a stocking and mail it to her if that would be ok with you. You can message me with her address or email me at jjoyce1a@aol.com. That just breaks my heart, that she had no stocking and no Turkey dinner!
  • sheis22 Ship 02 Div. 932

My daughter did not get a Thanksgiving dinner as well.  I do get to talk on the phone with her briefly every now & then as it is expensive, but it's nice to hear her voice.  She is overworked she says.  They work them 18 hours a day.  They say it's better if they get deployed right away & get the first deployment over right away, but I think it's harder on them.  She doesn't realize it will be different when they get back.  All she can think about is how slow the time is going & she is getting discouraged with the military.  What else can I say to her to help her through this deployment?
