Yippee! Welcome DARmom! Happy Dancing for you Tammy Jo! Congratulations Catsmom and wish her good luck! Great you got an email pam! I have a countdown app on my phone waiting for the Christmas phone call my son says I'm getting! lol I'm praying for patience Gaisey! My husband gave me a"reality check" today saying: "he doesn't love you any less because he's gone...realize he's missing you too"! Of course I didn't want to hear that at first, but then I calmed down. I realized we've raised some awesome people to take this big step in their lives to serve Our Country. I know my son is doing we
  • Coach Shelia

I know my son is doing well! Pressed add comment too soon! LOL Have a great week everyone!
  • pam

Catsmom,  Congrats to your Sailor and so exciting you were chatting with her on fb  Happy for you both!!!

  • too tall Joan

DARMom welcome to the group.  We have lots of fun and share laughs and tears.

Pam, I sent chocolates to my daughter in her christmas package and it arrived just fine.  From what I have read, chocolate can be sent through February and not melt.

I got a call from my sailor yesterday on my cell.  It was a bad connection and at first I didn't even recognize her voice.  We got to talk for 10 minutes. She said her cranking is over with Jan 22 and then she gets to go to her new rating, AO.   We were traveling to Ohio to pick up our son to bring home for christmas. Glad to have our son home, it helps with missing our sailor.

Catsmom what is the murder board?  I guess I will have to google search that one.

Happy for everyone getting phone calls and fb messages.  Should be many phones coming in the next couple of days.

Merry Christmas to all of you

  • Coach Shelia

Yippee! My son is AO also too tall Joan!
  • pam

too tall Joan,  thanks for the info on chocolates   happy you talked to your daughter  what a perfect present and your son being home for Christmas wonderful present too!!!  I was wondering what murder board is too   What Is AO?  congrats to Coach Sheila and your Sailor too!!    Welcome DARMom very informative a great group of ladies!!!

  • Catsmom

too tall Joan, Happy your son will be home for Christmas! And your for Her new rating of AO.
The Murder Boards are the next step after taking their test for the pin. They have to go up against a group of commanding officers, they shoot questions at them, they have to answer right and fast. That is why it gets its name ...
  • pam

Talked to my Sailor today!!!!   She sounded WONDERFUL.  Enjoying well deserved relaxing, partying in Bahrain!!!!   YAY!!!!!!  Merry, Merry Christmas to me!!!

  • DARmom

My son is getting read to leave to meet up with the HST. He (an others who are making the trip) are being told that when they get to the location (I won't post where) that they have to find and pay for their own housing - about $200 per night so some are planning to share. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing??

  • Coach Shelia

DARMom I have never heard this before. I know when my son left for the ship, he was told to bring at least $200 in cash. Only to buy food while in port and buy needs at the NEX on the ship while they process in on the ship. He should have to report not long after they get there to get his sleeping berth on the ship. I am hope this helps ease your mind. This is an awesome support group and everyone will get you answer. Look forward to meeting you!
  • DARmom

Coach Sheila - Thank you for your encouragement. I don't want to go into details on this website but the out-of-pocket costs are the least of my worries. I will feel a lot better once he is actually on the ship...which is hopefully very soon! I don't write on here much but have been reading the posts every day since we found out he was going to the Truman at the end of October. I really appreciate all the wisdom and the willingness to share with others! I now have folders for various topics such as deployment, packages (...might end up in ocean so don't send valuables!), Christ connections, jewelry / gifts and so on! The knowledge and sisterhood are priceless. Merry Christmas to all and your families too!

  • Catsmom

Yea! pam, doing the Happy Dance with you! Happy she sounds good and is enjoying some R&R!l

DARmom, I wish I could help, but I have no idea why they would make them pay for a hotel. Maybe it was a misunderstanding. Hope so anyway.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, to all . So happy you are all in my life!
  • pam

Thanks Catsmom  totally agree so Happy that we all are in each others lives!!

  • GrandmaBarB

    Darmom....

It  is rare for the military to have personnel pay for their expense along the way.  I CAN happen under unusual circumstances but he will be reimbursed.  Have him save all receipts along the way for out of pocket NECESSARY items and he can fill out an expense report onne he is onboard.

  • too tall Joan

Coach Sheila...yeah for AO's!!  We will have to have our kids look one another up after she gets to that area.

Pam...AO is Aviation Ordnanceman...if you go to the right side of the screen on this website there is a link that says "Navy Speak" you can type in any initial relating to the navy and find out what it means.  My daughter said when she got off the ship yesterday she went and bought a blanket cause she is freezing at night time. So it is safe to say that chocolates would travel well right now.  lol

Catsmom...I would freak out with rapid fire questioning.  You would have to really know you stuff to do well on the murder board.  So...if someone chokes during the murder board...do they lose their pin?

DARmom welcome to the group.  Lots of us are in the "over 50 club" are you in "elite" club?  lol We have a group of cabana boys that help us to relax while we are waiting to hear from our kids.  Ladies the pics are going to have to resurface after the holiday stresses.  I really need a massage!! I have my shopping for my 2 other adult kids to do tomorrow.  YIKES!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all.  Hope everyone talks to their kids while they are in Bahrain

  • Catsmom

Just got an early Christmas gift from my Daughter, an hour long phone call! Was so good to talk to her. She said that an Air Force pilot , is flying a Flag over Afghanistan for her, and wants to come onto the ship to give her an acomadation to her for her Helping him. I am so Proud of her! Was so good to talk for so long and laugh together. She said that their hot water heater went out for her Berthing, and they have to take cold showers..Burr. She said it is getting really cold.
She is getting her hair cut tomorrow. Said it is to long for cold showers.
too tall Joan, if they fail their Murder Board they can take it again. I Think they can only do that once. So far she has passed the 2 before this one the first time around. This is her 3 rd pin.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas! What a birthday to celebrate! Happy New year too!!

  • DARmom

Does anyone know if family members of military can fly free on standby?  My son is still in Norfolk because of misplaced paperwork and everyone that was there (who he knew) has left - either for the HST or home on leave. I am tempted to try and catch a flight.

  • Sherryl

  • Coach Shelia

Oh no DARMom so sorry to hear that. I will be praying he gets it straightened out. I know you could try for a flight on Christmas day and get a deal. I saw on the news of the airlines trying to fill the seats. He will get there and it's hard because of Christmas tomorrow. I'm pretty sure he'll get there by the time they leave port. Sending prayers your way today!

So happy and excited we are all hearing from our Sailors and they are receiving our cards, pkgs too!!!   I'm sure we are very much on our Sailors minds and their hearts for those of us who haven't heard yet.    Cindy, that's so very nice of your church to remember all our Sailors really wonderful to hear!!  Catsmom, omgosh  I can only imagine the tears in your eyes but how lovely for your radio station to remember our deployed military.   We sure are all tearing up these days aren't we?

  • Gaisey

Merry Christmas all!! God bless our sailors today and everyday! I missed our sailor's call at 6:30AM PST! But, I know he is thinking of us too on this blessed day!
  • Coach Shelia

I received my Christmas phone call yippee! I hope everyone hears from their Sailors!
  • Catsmom

Doing the Happy Dance for everyone who heard from their Sailors!
Zee Anne, haven't seen any Video from the ship, if you do see please post the link.
Gaisey, sorry you missed your call, hope he got to call again.
Hope you all had a Very Merry Christmas! I know we were all missing our sailors, and that they were missing us.
Weather did not feel like Christmas today. It was 85. To hot for Christmas.
  • Gaisey

Catsmom we didn't hear from him again so sad!! I kept my phone close to me all day. :( Beautiful sunny day in N. CA. 70 degrees. Folsom Lake is down to 21 percent of capacity. Looks like we are in for a drought up here.
  • Catsmom

Gaisey, I am sorry he wasn't able to call back. Hopefully tomorrow!
Yeah looks like drought here too, that is low for the lake! If you don't get the rain and snow pack it is bad for all of the state. Lets hope January brings lots of snow.
  • pschip

I know I'm a little late hope you all had a great Christmas. I got to talk to my sailors also it was so good. He has got all of his packages but didn't get his christmas card so i'm not sure if the others got their cards or not i hope so had a busy day Christmas Eve we had a candlelight service and all of our sailors were on the prayer list and will stay till they return home  Day we gave out toys to children in a community that we feed every week. Just to see their faces when you give them a toy it reminds me what Christmas is all about.  I made it through the day without crying to much . so the hard part it over christmas without my sailor. So now the count down till they all come home.  Blessing to you all

  • Carol Ann

Hello, Need my Navy Moms fix. Haven't been on here much lately as I had time off for the Holidays. Was so disappointed as I never did hear from my son at Christmas. Don't know why. I figured I would. maybe it was hard for him to get to a phone. Maybe he didn't have a card. Maybe he had duty. Maybe he thought it would be too depressing for him to call. I don't know. Last i heard from him was Dec. 17th. Do you all have happy stories to relay? i need to hear something good!

  • Carol Ann

Sharoncede: My son is missing 2 boxes still-one was his Christmas box. I am hoping that since I last talked to him maybe 1 or both have been received. I am thinking no though as both were sent during the time period that they were dropped in ocean. Oh well...I need to get on sending him another one out nad have a few things he asked for for that. Told me to hold up on the Slim Jims as he's getting burned out on those. My sister keeps sending him pkgs with those. She heard he loved them and it taking it a bit too far! I told him to quit hoarding them and share and he said he has been but no one wants them right now either-lol. Think they have all been getting a lot themselves! I am so sorry to hear about the pictures. Now THAT would be awful if those were in the sea! I sent my son some pictures--but none as important as those that I cannot replace without a huge cost! I say it's time to bring on those Cabana boys again. I have a bunch of M&M's left over from Christmas I can pull out!

  • Coach Shelia

Carol Ann I'm sorry you didn't hear from your son. My husband and I went to the movies together without our son and it was just weird. We went to the movies together all the time! I kept looking at my phone, holding it in my hand. LOL He did call very late his time and I did my happy dance! He had duty, the lines were very long for computers and phones. Plus he didn't want me sending him daily emails with:"CALL YOUR MAMA SAILOR"! if he didn't call. I'm doing good and he ended the call with: "I love you Mom and I sure miss you". It was so good to hear. My New Year's Resolution is to keep looking to the day I see him again, more mature and world traveler that he's become in a short time. He'll have one year in the Navy next time I hug him! He did get the package I thought got soaked!
  • Carol Ann

Coach Sheila: So happy for you! I saw you on FACEBOOK  commenting as I also stalk that site-lol! Yeah, my son was so missed. My daughter video taped a couple of shorts and posted them on his FACEBOOK page. She also did that Thanksgiving-which he said he did love seeing! I had some family members also post some shout outs to him for Christmas on FACEBOOK.So at least he will know we were missing him and thinking of him. Maybe I need to post the CALL YOUR MOMMA SAILOR on his email...I think I will at least send him an email and ask him to check in with me as i miss hearing from him. Well at least we are on the downturn now...we are past the halfway point. Hopefully the next few months will go by quickly and safely and we all will be reunited with our sailors and be so happy once again! My son's 6 years will be up June 10th and he is taking some leave time before the ship comes back. Then will go back to Norfolk and meet the ship when it returns if his plans all come to play. Then shortly after that will be returning to us for good! I will tell you ladies this--there is going to be one hell of a return party for him then too!

  • Carol Ann

sharoncede: I think I definitely DO need to track the pkgs and check to see if the Navy actually did receive them or not, then I may have my answer. Coach Sheila sounds like an old pro on here doesn't she? My son actually had lost weight instead of gained weight after his last employment which he really cannot afford to do. He's 6'2" and weighed 175 going on deployment last time and came back at 162 and looked way too thin. I fattened him up a little. he said he ate, just worked out a lot. He definitely has some muscle tone let me tell you! i have empty nest too, but lots of visits from my daughter, her husband and my two grandkids as they live just down the street from us. sure do miss my baby though (my son). And yes, I think we definitely have drawn closer these last few years as we have so much more time for each other now without all the interruptions of raising a family! LOL

  • Gaisey

Seriously, we need to SEE the new costumes on or off the cabana boys. My son finally called yesterday woohoo! He had watch on Christmas Day and said he checked in a lot of "happy" sailors ... He never gives specifics on what he has or has not received such a "male!" I am looking forward to the homecoming too!!
  • Gaisey

Woohoo hats and blowers... (Hmm giggle) Cabana boys here I come....I can't wait for New Years! I am heading to the beach in central CA!!
  • Catsmom

Carol Ann sending you big (((((((HUGS )))))). I talked to my daughter a few days before Christmas. She called and said Merry Christmas, thought I would call today. The phones will be busy. They were in port. Not sure how long they were going to be there. We talked for an hour. Was so good to laugh with her. I did good, I didn't cry.. She has been very busy, and not getting much sleep. She said the first day they had off she slept all day and half the night. She is now waiting on the Murder Board to get her next pin.
I hope you get a Happy New Year call from your Son! I am sure it is hard for them to be away from everyone this time of year. My girl said it didn't feel like Christmas. Told her we will have have Christmas when she comes home.
Hang in there, I know you will hear from him soon. We are all here for you!
  • Catsmom

Gaisey that sounds fun! Which beach? The weather is going to be nice, Know you will have fun. We went to Laguna Beach yesterday, I thought it was summer..LOL
Lots of people, took us an hour to get home, and it is only 2 miles!
  • Gaisey

Catsmom-I love Laguna beach and my all time favorite is the Beach Comber at Crystal Cove. (I do a lot of business in Irvine) We are checking out Cayucos this time and the wine country in Paso Robles.
  • pschip

Carol Ann sorry you didn't hear from your sailor.  Hope all of your packages get there.

sharoncede  I hope the picture album will show up.  And bring on the cabana boys i have M&M and chocolate kisses.  I still have to order my banner.  I have his birthday to get pass.

Gaisey  Have fun at the beach.  I just wish for warmer weather.

    Everyone have a great day

  • Carol Ann

Thanks Catsmom: You and the other Moms are making me feel better! I am "pouting" cuz i didn't get what I wanted for Christmas-a call from my son! lol I will live though...I bet quite a few of the sailors who checked in this time after being in port had tipped a few back-lol! Probably one of them was my son and that is why he never called! Ha!

You ladies talking about going to the Beaches are killing me...It's actually almost 40 degrees here in OH today and the sun is shining--not Calif weather but I will take it!

Sharonecede: Thanks for the reminder about the free sign. I definitely do need to order one and SOON!
