Gaisey: I am sure we could come up with some words to that song!
Hmmmmn! Isn't that a really EXPENSIVE school and very hard to get into? My friend's son went there for about a year I believe. He's a big shot Graphic Designer now... Are you having a drink of Patron cuz you're not happy with this choice?
Tell those work people to leave me alone! It is Friday and I am busy drinking my tequila with diamonds on my fingers and yes wrapped in my red boa... Unless you are a cabana boy don't call me! Are we celebrating Easter early??
I would love to visit Southern Alabama, right? I spent a summer in Perdido Bat in my 20's frequented the "florabama" many times...woohoo you have real cabana bits down south!
Haz-mat. He started out to be a rescue swimmer, but the underwater training did him in. Lunges with 50lb flippers and a guy who only weighed 150lbs was a recipe for disaster!
Gaisey: Rescue swimmer!?! Wow, I am impressed! THAT would be so physically demanding! I would be glad he's not doing that. Less to worry about--him drowning! My son is 6'2" and weighs 170. Tall and thin. After last deployment he came home on leave weighing 162 and looked anorexic. He said he ate, Just hot in Reactor Dept.
sharoncede: Thank you! He was a very good kid. That's why I was so angry/surprised about him getting into trouble in last port cuz his designated person got drunk too... Sure, Do you wantt one with or without the colored egg in the bottom of the glass!?!
My son has had his mishaps too, all minor some more dramatic than others. But, the Navy has dealt fairly with him. They have a job to do and these mishaps do hurt advancement. You never know who is watching and taking note! Good to get caught on minor infractions, good kids will be deterred from bigger trouble! Hopefully, the discipline will stick when they get out and they don't become cabana boys!!! Ha ha.
My son is so straight, when he was 13 he asked if he could walk to Carl's Jr after school, I gave him the rundown on his boundaries and told him to call me if anything happens that made him uncomfortable. Low and behold at 3:30pm I get the call. Mom can you come get me these kids are really bad. Ok, so I am thinking smoking, drinking or drugs. I pick him up and I can see he is upset. So I wait patiently for him to tell me what happened, finally he spills it out "they jay walked" I had to contain my laughter..., and I thanked God for my good kid!!
Sharoncede, I can totally relate to Yosemite on this one. My boy Oh BOY! Just leave it at that but The Navy is watching and he knows it. He is advancing so fast but that doesn't mean that he hasn't had his fair share of drama in him.
Hello everyone! I've enjoyed reading all your posts today! I love Apple Martinis...want to have one in hand when sharoncode and Carol Ann start the party! Yippee!
Sharoncede, Gaisey and others. WOW. My grandson was taking the High Speed Line from South Jersey to Center City Philly, then 2 bus connections to get to his Dad's house in Northeast Philly when he was 11....!!
Guess it all depends upon where you live and the sort of atmosphere in your town or city. What a wonderful diversity we have in our country...how lucky we are.
Gaisey. I think it all comes down to the difference between "city kids" and kids not from cities.
I was raised in the Rogue River Valley in southern Oregon to a huge extended family who grew, caught or shot just about every bit of food in our mouth. I knew (and still do) the way around the woods and forest like the back of my hand and we kids wandered all over the valley on foot, bikes or tractors. Our "playground" was 25 miles long....ha. There were cougar (mountain lion, they called them there), coyote, bear and other forest creatures that we all knew about, how to avoid them and what to do if confronted. We camped on bed rolls around a fire on the ground under the skies......
We were taught "common sense" from being little kids onward.
That stood me well when I found myself in the "city"......living 15 minutes from Center City Philly.....
My grandson also took is first plane ride...alone when he was 8,,,,he flew from Philly to San Francisco to join me to visit his great grandma and a bunch of relatives he'd never met. Then he flew alone to Hawaii to spend weeks with his Uncle Harry until he was almost 15. He cruised with me once a year from 13 to 18...and had the run of the ship. When he was 18, I let him go off the ship with a couple friends his age in Cozumel and Jamaica with strict instructions on what time to be back....and bit my fingernails for HOURS until I saw him in line to re-board....right on time.
I don't worry about him being so far from home. He's capable, self-sufficient, self-motivated....and knows there are consequences if you do something stupid. My only worry is that the "situation" stays calm over there. The arrival of the French groups and the Italian carrier makes me grit my teeth but, being a veteran myself, I know that's all part of the military. (Someday I'll tell ya about an experience when 2 German submarines arrived at the Naval Base in Beaufort, SC, right outside the Marine base...and the blast we had with those yummy German sailors.....ha).
I believe you should give your kids roots.....and wings.....and teach them how to fly. I did that with mine...and "the kid" had the same upbringing. Grab hold, eat everything, drink everything, see everything, do everything....and always know where you are and what's around ya........
GrandmaBarB you have led an amazing life and have passed on to your children and grandchild a sense of confidence to go see and "do!" I hope that I have passed on to my children the same sense. of curiosity and confidence to see the world and live it! I too am concerned about the activity I read about in the Midfle East. I pray for peace and a safe ontime homecoming for our sailors. I hope I get to meet you in VA, because I need to hear about those Germans over a few cold ones!
Gaisey. Would hope to meet you and others also upon homecoming. A "cold one" is certainly in that future. (which is more than what you got from those lovely German sailors onboard their boats....they don't refrigerate their beer)..ha.
Sometimes, we just have to have confidence in our leaders that they will do what they can to avoid confrontation with other nations. Mid East has been in such turmoil for hundreds of years....war is a way of life with them, for sure. The actions of our government hasn't always been in the best interest of peace, too. So, it's important to accept that our sailors (and other military folks) are the best trained, best equipped in history....our intelligence is unsurpassed. Then, keep those fingers crossed that somebody does NOT do something stupid......
Well said GrandmaBarb! I was active duty Army when it was called Desert Storm. Not in a million lifetimes would I of thought we would still have a presence there...and my son serving Our Country. I pray daily for our military to stay safe as they are healthy and happy to do so. Can't wait to meet y'all (as they say in Texas)! Yippee!
Hi everyone, hope you all are having a good Saturday!
Coach Shelia, love the saying, not sure my singing would make anyone feel better...LOL. But I do sing.
Well said GrandmaBarB, can't wait to meet all of you! Have a good weekend, hope everyone hears from their Sailors!
My husband is on the Truman and I was wondering if anyone could help me with obtaining information about their homecoming (without breaking OPSEC). I'm in the Air Force so the Navy is quite different for me. He told me to contact the Ombudsman but i'm not sure how to do that. Any info?
MrsArmstrong, the ombudsman cant tell us either he can advise you via snail mail you may want to join the FRG group your husband would need to email them an okay for you to join they keep us up dated also not sure if you are on the Truman support page via FB but you can get informative info Not dates . Thanks for your service in the Air force my son is in the AF and Daughter is in the Navy and yes they are completely different! hahaha Ladies cant wait to meet you all and I ordered my banner too:)
Thank you GrandmaBar B but how will I know when he's coming home. He's not allowed to email me any info like that. I just want to be able to give my job a estimated date when he'll be coming so I can take off. This is all so confusing
MrsArmstrong. You'll have to bear up like military families all over the country do. We won't know anything....until it has been published by the Navy and they aren't going to give away that information to the public.
It's all about safety and security for our armed forces.
Most employers cooperate in these things, knowing the way it works. You are in a HUGE boat with lots of people in it......ha.
Troop movements and such are NEVER advertised ahead of time.
I agree with GrandmaBarB. We have an idea of the month but exact date is subject to change. My husband attends meetings with the captain and just today he gave me an idea of time frame but I really don't pay much attention because during our last deployment things changed with short notice. I'm friends with a sailor's wife who will replace our ship and so far they are on track to leave on time. So as long as they leave on time and nothing erupts in that region, we are good for a spring homecoming! Have a great week everyone!!!
Good Morning everyone, GrandmaBarB is right, we have to be careful, and we all are praying that nothing will keep them from coming home as planned! We are all in the same boat, pardon the pun ...MrsArmstrong, we may have a clue, but no real confirmed date. Makes it hard to plan, but I am sure your command will understand that.
what is all the buzz about for the spring? unless I find out from you all I know nothing. my son has been sooooooooooooo busy working no time to take to me on facebook, onlyson
ADANF'sMom... I read your post from Friday and I was simply asking where to go to get information. I was not asking you for the information you knew or to even post it on this website.
Hello Ladies, Hope you all are having a good Monday! I just spent a little time catching up on all your emails...
Sharoncede: enjoyed your little story about your son camping out West.
Julie01: I guess boys are boys!
Coach Sheila: I like Apple Martinis too. As far as singing goes I love to sing-don't have the best voice though-I didn't realize it was actually good for you.
GrandmaBarB: I lover your stories and no nonsense ways!
CatsMomj-Thanks for the compliment about my son and yes you can have an Easter drink!
Gaisey: I would be very afraid for my son to become a cabana boy with this group! ha-ha! Love your story about your son at 13 and how your Momma intuition made you go to the worst case scenario. Don't we all!?!
Mrs. Armstrong-welcome!
Sherryl and others who mentioned ordering signs I just thought of something you may or may not know...if you are planning on taking big signs and banners to the Homecoming you may want to check and see what restrictions there will be on how big of one you can take to the BASE/Pier. I know the last time they told us no balloons, streamers or signs over 2'x2' in size. I haven't ordered my sign yet, but will soon. I may get a banner or longer one though for his Homecoming Party. He will be getting out officially June 10th this year and I intend to throw him one hell of a party with friends and relatives once I determine his exact out date and when he wants to do this.
He sent me an email a couple of days ago and is planning on flying back off ship (he has always wanted to do this) if approved and all goes well a couple of weeks before the Homecoming and taking a 10 day or so leave to come home, then go back to BASE and help with setting up for Homecoming. Then will work on ship and stand first watch so that group can take first leave. Said he figures it was his turn to help out. I am happy to see him but a little disappointed about what he's doing cuz that would really mean no reason for us to come to the Homecoming as we will have already seen him and he will be working. I told my hubby I would love to still go and meet you all in person, but it would be kind of silly to spend the money which we really do not have unless it was for him. So, sign, I probably won't be there. Just make sure some of you take videos and lots of pictures to share with me and the others who aren't going to be fortunate to be there.
