Too Tall... How does one get on the email list for the newsletter you mention? I'd like to have a way of staying connected to what's going on in addition of the awesome posts on this site. Thanks again.
BoomMom here is the info to get the monthly newsletter
To join our e-mail list, please have your Sailor e-mail us from their CVN-75 e-mail address. The request should be sent to Communications.TrumanFRG@gmail.com and should include:
§ Sailor’s Name, Rate, Department
§ Sailor’s planned rotation date (PRD)
§ Family member’s name, e-mail, and relationship to sailor § Does family member live in Hampton Roads?
Please add the FRG e-mail addresses to your “contacts” list to prevent messages from going to your junk mail folder.
Have your DIL join the group for wives on this website
grangmaBarB if it's meant to be the housing aspect will open up
Letyrod24 I've never tried to send to ship with them being stateside but from what others have said, it would be easier to mail to a friend that lives off ship
B'sNukeMom here is info on the ombudsmen
The Navy Family Ombudsman Program was created in 1970. Today, the Ombudsmen Program is made up of spouses (male and female), but they can also be parents or even active duty members through a waiver process, when a command is not able to find a spouse. Navy families can turn to these volunteers on a range of issues; from information from the command -- especially during deployments, to advice on family issues, or even where to get the best deals on household needs in town. Navy Ombudsmen go through an initial training (16 hours of it) and then are offered monthly online training and local classes to aide in their mission and keep up-to-date on emerging issues
Thanks too tall for the info. Our sailor leaves today to head back to NY to get his car & then he will be driving to VA tomorrow. Been a whirlwind 3 weeks at home but we've sure enjoyed our time with him! I'm not looking forward to the drive home from the airport today :( (hubby couldn't get off work so I have to go alone).
I know he has made contact with his sponsor so once he gets settled in I'm hoping he'll get his CVN75 email & he can get us added to the mailing list for the newsletter. I'm looking forward to finding out as much as I can about the Truman.
Sailor & his roommate both made it back to NY last night (midnight). Now their plan is to head to VA Saturday morning - they are going to leave at 2am! They want to get there in time so they can get their apartment taken care of. Praying for safe travels for them - I know that VA has been having some extreme weather....
My sailor reports to his ship tomorrow for the first time! He texted this morning & said they are possibly expecting a few inches of snow so he is trying to find out from his ship sponsor if he reports or not. His furniture made it there yesterday & he is getting settled in....
We were supposed to go see our son over Easter but I guess the Truman/Navy has other ideas for our sailors at that time. Bummer. Hopefully we can see him soon. The weather is warming up nicely there I understand. Hope you all have a great Friday and weekend. It's getting ALL THE WAY up to 50o here in Buffalo tomorrow. Almost bathing suit weather :)
BoomMom - sorry your plans won't work out. Our son just got to VA a few weeks ago - we are hoping sometime (?) to get there for a visit. We spent last Easter visiting our sailor while he was in NY (Ballston Spa) and lucky for us he was just home for almost 30 days when he moved from NY to VA. We are in CA and today it's 80+ and supposed to be 90+ this weekend! I'll push some of the warm air your way lol!
We had a wonderful weekend. When we got there on Friday, our sailor daughter had dinner on the table waiting for us. Saturday we went to the beach and walked the boardwalk. Perfect time at the beach while her husband was working. On the way to the car it started raining but that's ok cause in my heart the sun was shining. Had a great seafood buffet for dinner. As we were leaving on Sunday to come home my husband and I liked at each other and both started crying. We've already planned to go visit again in May for our anniversary. After 2 sons that are addicts, our sailor is our ray of sunshine, so proud of her.
Thanks B'sNukeMoM for asking
too tall Joan - so happy that you had a nice visit! Nothing better for our momma hearts than to see our kids happy! Nice that you will get to go back in May ;-) I can't wait until hubby & I can visit VA & our sailor.....
Hi all. Just sharing a personal link to watch because I am so proud of my sister who started an organization in Florida to link Veterans with PTSD with a K-9 for healing. It's pretty cool. Hope you enjoy and that we all find some way to help our sailors and veterans. http://www.rnrfonline.com/organization-pairs-veterans-with-k-9-to-t...
Thanks B'sNukeMom. Wish I could be with her in Florida instead of Buffalo today (more snow). Hoping to hear when I can go see our son. Had to cancel our flights due to potential delay on shake down. Heard no new potential itinerary. If anyone else has heard an update... pm me please.
Anyone have a good email address for the Truman ombudsman? I went to the official web page for the HST and tried sending emails to 3 different addresses. All of them kicked back....
Hi all- my son arrived on Saturday. He's only in Norfolk for 20 days, then to Pensacola for C school, and back to the Truman awards the end of July. He is happy to finally see ships after being Navy for nearly a year. One of his shipmates from GL is there and has a car so he is hoping to do some exploring this weekend to see the Truman.
We are planning a trip to Pensacola July 4th weekend :) So ready over this winter! I feel you BoomMom!
Yay - just got a call from my sailor (we didn't get to talk to him on Easter). I'm a happy momma right now! It's good to hear him excited about his ship ;-)
It was a wonderful visit with my son. Especially unique was having Easter dinner aboard the ship. Didn't expect that but he kept it as a surprise. Sure is big. Couldn't hug him enough.
BoomMom - we spoke with our sailor yesterday & he mentioned the Easter dinner on the ship. (We are in CA & haven't made it to VA yet!) That's awesome that you got to do that - I hope that sometime soon hubby & I can make it there and get a visit of the ship ;-) Glad you had a nice time!
B'sNukeMmom... It was just the right timing for us to spend Easter with him (escaping the cold of Buffalo), and the ship being in port AND open for food. Quite the experience. It's a massive ship. And California is a long way away. Hope you can get there some time. Hope all is well with your sailor.
BoomMom - sounds like perfect timing for you! I know we will get our chance too (hopefully sooner rather than later!). So far so good with our sailor...
Hi everyone, It has been awhile since I posted, but I do read everything. I got a phone call from my girl yesterday, she said she had been in medical, she thought she had food poisoning, but it turns out I am going to be a grandma! I am so excited, she is in shock..LOL She said her and her hubby were being very careful, but it happens. I am just worried and Praying that her husband will grow up now. As I am still distraught that she took him back after all he did while they were deployed. But I am happy to join the Grandma club. She doesn't want me to post on Facebook yet.
Wow Catsmom! Congrats to you on the GMA club. My hubby is going to be soooooo jealous! He wants to be a GPA so bad LOL. Hopefully this will be the nudge that her hubby needs to step up and be the kind of loving husband (and father) she deserves.... Good luck and keep us posted!
BoomMom I have toured the ship but never ate on it. Happy for you
Catsmom I didn't realize they were back together. I hope all works out for the best. Being a grandma is WONDERFUL. Not our sailor daughter but we have our first grandchild & she is 3 months old. Congrats to you all & please keep us posted. You have our support on here
Can anyone tell me if they have purchased a mattress topper for their sailors berthing area? I'd like to get one for sailor for when he's on the ship but would like some feedback....any suggestions?
B'sNukeMoM, I ordered sheets for my daughter on the last deployment from the navy store. She loved them. Much better than the ones she was given. No mattress topper, but no complaints from her after.
My son doesn't stay on the ship much (yet!) so he uses a sleeping bag when he is there. He said it's a little uncomfortable which is why I thought the mattress topper might be a good idea. I've seen the memory foam ones online so I might send him one of those. Then it's just a matter of convincing him to take it from his apartment to the ship! A mom on another group mentioned black-out curtains. Anyone have any info on those?
BNukesMom my daughter just uses the issued sheets plus she uses a "rag" blanket that we made" when she gets to her berthing she is so tired she just falls in and sleeps. I have heard others talk about the black out curtain and I think they got them through Amazon but not positive on that on.
Catsmom definitely a matter for prayer for both of them and for you too.
too tall Joan - someone had mentioned NavyRackPacks for the blackout curtain so I've looked at their website - just trying to find out if the Truman command allows them. For the times my son has stayed on the ship he's just been using a sleeping bag. He said if it's warm he can just sleep on top of it or if it's cold he'll crawl inside. I'll have to ask him about the mattress topper....don't want to get it if he won't use it!
Dang. The hurry up and wait and not knowing each day sure is dragging on... He can't schedule an eye surgery until he knows he will have 5 days to recoup after return from underway... But better to get things fixed BEFORE they go out in the big blue wet thing... Have a great day all. 28o this morning in Buffalo. It stinks!
Yes, this hurry up & wait is frustrating. Spoke with our sailor on Saturday and no news on anything....He did say he got some time at home & was able to get his apartment a little more organized...He hadn't completely unpacked from when he arrived in February but now that is done. And he & his roommate decided they need some more furniture lol!
I hope things work out for your son BoomMom so he can get his eye surgery - boy that's got to be hard to plan for with the way things are going right now....ugh!
We all must have patience. With all the nonsense going on in the Middle East and around the Arabia Sea, Yemen, the Gulf of Aden and other places, I would imagine decisions are being made everyday. Sometimes military must just be "at ready" and wait for developments. Remember what our sailors are there for and what they are trained to do.....
GrandmaBarB - yes, I have definitely learned (more) patience since my son joined the Navy lol! It's also amazing how much patience he has learned ;-) (It's still frustrating listening to him sometimes, but it's not in our hands!)
